We investigate how stable circular orbits around a main compact object appear depending on the presence of a second one by using the Majumudar--Papapetrou dihole spacetime, which consists of the two extremal Reissner--Nordstr\" om black holes with different masses. While the parameter range of the separation of the two objects is divided due to the appearance of stable circular orbits, this division depends on its mass ratio. We show that the mass ratio range separates into four parts, and we find three critical values as the boundaries.
We investigate the positions of stable circular massive particle orbits in the Majumdar--Papapetrou dihole spacetime with equal mass. In terms of qualitative differences of their sequences, we classify the dihole separation into five ranges and find four critical values as the boundaries. When the separation is relatively large, the sequence on the symmetric plane bifurcates, and furthermore, they extend to each innermost stable circular orbit in the vicinity of each black hole. In a certain separation range, the sequence on the symmetric plane separates into two parts. On the basis of this ph…
The innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) around rapidly rotating neutron stars are studied in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. Universal relations for properly scaled ISCO properties are extended from General Relativity to dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and additional relations are obtained.
Newtonian gravitational potential sourced by a homogeneous circular ring in arbitrary dimensional Euclidean space takes a simple form if the spatial dimension is even. In contrast, if the spatial dimension is odd, it is given in a form that includes complete elliptic integrals. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of a freely falling massive particle in its Newtonian potential. Focusing on circular orbits on the symmetric plane where the ring is placed, we observe that they are unstable in 4D space and above, while they are stable in 3D space. The sequence of stable circular orbits disappear…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations in the Schwarzschild background both at Mathisson-Pirani and Tulczyjew-Dixon supplementary condition are considered. The region of existence of highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinning particle in this background and dependence of the particle's orbital velocity on its spin and radial coordinate are investigated. It is shown that in contrast to the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinless particle, which exist only for $r=1.5 r_g(1+δ)$, $0<δ\ll 1$, the corresponding orbits of a spinning particle are allowed in a wider space region, and the d…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou equations in Kerr's background are considered. The region of existence of highly relativistic planar circular orbits of a spinning particle in this background and dependence of the particle's Lorentz $γ$-factor on its spin and radial coordinate are investigated. It is shown that in contrast to the highly relativistic circular orbits of a spinless particle the corresponding orbits of a spinning particle are allowed in much wider space region. Some of these orbits show the significant attractive action of the spin-gravity coupling on a particle and others are caused by t…
In terms of Sturm's theorem, we reexamine a marginal stable circular orbit (MSCO) such as the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a timelike geodesic in any spherically symmetric and static spacetime. MSCOs for some of exact solutions to the Einstein's equation are discussed. Strum's theorem is explicitly applied to the Kottler (often called Schwarzschild-de Sitter) spacetime. Moreover, we analyze MSCOs for a spherically symmetric, static and vacuum solution in Weyl conformal gravity.
In this paper analytical solutions of the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations that describe nonequatorial circular orbits of a spinning particle in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter background are studied, and the role of the cosmological constant is emphasized. It is shown that generally speaking a highly relativistic velocity of the particle is a necessary condition of motion along this type of orbits, with an exception of orbits locating close to the position of the static equilibrium, where low velocities are possible as well. Depending on the correlation between the spin orientation of the particle …
We study a marginally stable circular orbit (MSCO) such as the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a timelike geodesic in any spherically symmetric and static spacetime. It turns out that the metric components are separable from the constants of motion along geodesics. We show also that a metric component $g_{rr}$ with a radial coordinate $r$ does not affect MSCOs. This suggests that, as a test of gravity, any ISCO measurement may be put into the same category as gravitational redshift experiments. MSCOs for exact solutions to the Einstein's equation are also mentioned.
We consider the motion of massive and massless particles in a five-dimensional spacetime with a compactified extra-dimensional space where a black hole is localized, i.e., a caged black hole spacetime. We show the existence of circular orbits and reveal their sequences and stability. In the asymptotic region, stable circular orbits always exist, which implies that four-dimensional gravity is more dominant because of the small extra-dimensional space. In the vicinity of a black hole, they do not exist because the effect of compactification is no longer effective. We also clarify the dependence …
It has recently been proposed that the accreting collapsed object GRO J1655--40 could contain a non-zero gravitomagnetic monopole, and hence could be better described with the more general Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime, instead of the Kerr spacetime. This makes the KTN spacetime astrophysically relevant. In this paper, we study properties of various circular orbits in the KTN spacetime, and find the locations of circular photon orbits (CPOs) and innermost-stable-circular-orbits (ISCOs). Such orbits are important to interpret the observed X-ray spectral and timing properties of accreting collap…
We consider the dynamics of particles, particularly focusing on circular orbits in the higher-dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou (MP) spacetimes with two equal mass black holes. It is widely known that in the 5D Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Myers-Perry backgrounds, there are no stable circular orbits. In contrast, we show that in the 5D MP background, stable circular orbits can always exist when the separation of two black holes is large enough. More precisely, for a large separation, stable circular orbits exist from the vicinity of horizons to infinity; for a medium one, they appear only in a …
A topological approach has been successfully used to study the properties of the light ring and the null circular orbit, in a generic black hole background. However, for the equatorial timelike circular orbit, quite different from the light ring case, its radius is closely dependent of the energy and angular momentum of a test particle. This fact seems to restrict the extension of the topological treatment to the timelike circular orbit. In this paper, we confirm that the angular momentum does not affect the asymptotic behavior of the constructed vector with its zero points denoting the equato…
Reducing motion of particles to a two-dimensional potential problem, we show that there are stable circular orbits around a squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole with a spherical horizon and multi-Kaluza-Klein black holes with two spherical horizons in five dimensions. For a single horizon, we show analytically that the radius of an innermost stable circular orbit monotonically depends on the size of an extra dimension. For two horizons, the radius of an innermost stable circular orbit depends on the separation between two black holes besides the size of an extra dimension. More precisely, the set …
The physical and mathematical properties of the non-linearly coupled black-hole-orbiting-ring system are studied analytically to second order in the dimensionless angular velocity $M_{\text{ir}}ω_{\text{H}}$ of the black-hole horizon (here $M_{\text{ir}}$ is the irreducible mass of the slowly rotating central black hole). In particular, we determine analytically, to first order in the dimensionless ring-to-black-hole mass ratio $m/M_{\text{ir}}$, the shift $ΔΩ_{\text{mb}}/Ω_{\text{mb}}$ in the orbital frequency of the {\it marginally bound} circular geodesic that characterizes the composed cur…
In Newtonian physics or in general relativity, energy dissipation causes observers moving along circular orbits to slowly spiral towards the source of the gravitational field. We show that the loss of energy has the same effect in any theory of gravity respecting the weak equivalence principle, by exhibiting an intimate relation between the energy of a massive test particle and the stability of its orbit. Ultimately, massive particles either plunge, or are driven towards minima of the generalized Newtonian potential, where they become static. In addition, we construct a toy metric which displa…
The radius of the circular orbit for the time-like or light-like test particle in a background of general spherically symmetric spacetime is viewed as a characterized quantity for the thermodynamic phase transition of the corresponding black hole. We generally show that the phase transition information of a black hole can be reflected by its surrounding particle's circular orbit.
We consider generic rotating axially symmetric "dirty" (surrounded by matter) black holes. Near-horizon circular equatorial orbits are examined in two different cases of near-extremal (small surface gravity $κ$) and exactly extremal black holes. This has a number of qualitative distinctions. In the first case, it is shown that such orbits can lie as close to the horizon as one wishes on suitably chosen slices of space-time when $κ\rightarrow 0$. This generalizes observation of T.\ Jacobson Class. Quantum Grav. 28 187001 (2011) made for the Kerr metric. If a black hole is extremal ($κ=0$), circ…
We study linear nonradial perturbations and stability of a marginal stable circular orbit (MSCO) such as the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes which possess a reflection symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane. The proposed approach is applied to Kerr solution and Majumdar-Papapetrou solution to Einstein equation. Finally, we reexamine MSCOs for a modified metric of a rapidly spinning black hole that has been recently proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis [PRD, 83, 124015 (2011)]. We show that, for the Johannsen and Psaltis's mode…
We derive a necessary condition for the existence of marginally stable circular orbits of test particles in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes which possess a refection symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane; photon orbits are also addressed. Energy and angular momentum are shown to decouple from metric quantities, rendering a purely geometric characterization of circular orbits for this general class of metrics. The subsequent system is analyzed using resultants, providing an algorithmic approach for finding MSCO conditions. MSCOs are explicitly calculated for concrete examples of phys…
We study a viable connection between the circular-equatorial orbits and reflection symmetry across the equatorial plane of a vacuum stationary axis-symmetric spacetime in general relativity. The behavior of the circular equatorial orbits in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane is studied, and different outcomes in the presence and in the absence of the reflection symmetry are discussed. We conclude that in the absence of the equatorial reflection symmetry neither stable nor unstable circular orbit can exist on the equatorial plane. Moreover, to address the observational aspects,…
The stability under radial and vertical perturbations of circular orbits associated to particles orbiting a spherically symmetric center of attraction is study in the context of the n-dimensional: Newtonian theory of gravitation, Einstein's general relativity, and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation. The presence of a cosmological constant is also considered. We find that this constant as well as the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant are crucial to have stability for $n>4$.
We investigate the stable circular orbits of the spinning test particles around the accelerating Kerr black hole on the equatorial plane. To this end, we first calculate the equations of motion and analyze the parameter space for the particles. We study the effect of the particle's spin and the black hole's acceleration on the conserved angular momentum, conserved energy and radius of the spinning test particle on the innermost stable circular orbit. We find that the effect of the particle's spin on the orbit parameters is almost linear, the effect of the black hole's acceleration on those par…
We present exact solutions of test particle orbits spiralling inward from the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a Kerr black hole. Our results are valid for any allowed value of the angular momentum $a$-parameter of the Kerr metric. These solutions are of considerable physical interest. In particular, the radial 4-velocity of these orbits is both remarkably simple and, with the radial coordinate scaled by its ISCO value, universal in form, otherwise completely independent of the black hole spin.
The inner boundary of a black hole accretion disk is often set to the marginally stable circular orbit (or the innermost stable circular orbit, ISCO) around the black hole. It is important for the theories of black hole accretion disks and their applications to astrophysical black hole systems. Traditionally, the marginally stable circular orbit is obtained by considering the equatorial motion of a test particle around a black hole. However, in reality the accretion flow around black holes consists of fluid, in which the pressure often plays an important role. Here we consider the influence of…
We study the circular orbits of charged particles around a weakly charged Schwarzschild black hole immersed in a weak, axisymmetric magnetic field. We start by reviewing the circular orbits of neutral particles and charged particles around only weakly charged and only weakly magnetized black holes. The case of a weakly magnetized and charged black hole is investigated then. In particular, we study the effect of the electromagnetic forces on the charged particles innermost stable circular orbits. We show that negative energy stable circular orbits are possible and that two bands of charged part…
Existence of a photon circular orbit can tell us a lot about the nature of the underlying spacetime, since it plays a pivotal role in the understanding of the characteristic signatures of compact objects, namely the quasi-normal modes and shadow radius. For this purpose, determination of the location of the photon circular orbit is of utmost importance. In this work, we derive bounds on the location of the photon circular orbit around compact objects within the purview of general relativity and beyond. As we have explicitly demonstrated, contrary to the earlier results in the context of genera…
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)), the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.
We calculate the self-force acting on a charged particle on a circular geodesic orbit in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole. We show by direct calculation that the dissipative self-force balances with the sum of the flux radiated to infinity and through the black hole horizon. Prograde orbits are found to stimulate black hole superradiance, but we confirm that the condition for floating orbits cannot be met. We calculate the conservative component of the self-force by application of the mode sum regularization method, and we present a selection of numerical results. By numerical fit…
The Kehagias-Sfetsos asymptotically flat black hole and naked singularity solutions of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity are investigated both in the weak-field and strong-field regimes. In the weak-field limit the gravitational field generated by the Kehagias-Sfetsos spherically symmetric solution is weaker then in the case of the Schwarzschild black hole of general relativity. In the strong-field regime naked singularities with $ω_{0} \ll 1 $ display an unusual distance dependence: gravity becomes weaker when approaching the singularity. The stability of circular orbits is also analyzed. While in the …
It is demonstrated that, in the adiabatic approximation, non-Equatorial circular orbits of particles in the Kerr metric (i.e. orbits of constant Boyer-Lindquist radius) remain circular under the influence of gravitational radiation reaction. A brief discussion is given of conditions for breakdown of adiabaticity and of whether slightly non-circular orbits are stable against the growth of eccentricity.
In this article we study the stability in the sense of Lyapunov of the circular orbits in the generalized Manev two bodies problem. First, we explore the existence of the circular orbits and determine their radius. Then, using the first integrals of motion we build a positive definite function, known as a Lyapunov function. It's existence proves that the circular orbit is stable in the sense of Lyapunov. In the end, we consider several real systems of two bodies and compare the characteristics of the circular orbits in Newtonian and modified Manev gravitational field, arguing about our possibi…
A general study of the stability of equatorial circular orbits in static axially symmetric gravitating systems is presented. Important circular geodesics as the marginally stable orbit, the marginally bounded orbit and the photon orbit are analyzed. We found general expressions for the radius, specific energy, specific angular momentum and the radius of the marginally stable orbit, both for null and timelike circular geodesics. Solutions expressed in cylindrical coordinates, oblate spheroidal coordinates, and prolate spheroidal coordinates are considered. We show that all null circular orbits …
We study the circular orbits of charged particles around a weakly charged Kerr black hole immersed in a weak, axisymmetric magnetic field. Firstly, we review the circular orbits of neutral particles. We then review the circular orbits of charged particles around a weakly charged Kerr black hole and weakly magnetized Kerr black hole. The case of a weakly magnetized and charged black hole is investigated thereafter. We investigate, in particular, the effect of the electromagnetic forces on the charged particles' innermost stable circular orbits. We examine the conditions for the existence of neg…
We study motion of charged particles in the field of a rotating black hole immersed into an external asymptotically uniform magnetic field, focusing on the epicyclic quasi-circular orbits near the equatorial plane. Separating the circular orbits into four qualitatively different classes according to the sign of the canonical angular momentum of the motion and the orientation of the Lorentz force, we analyse the circular orbits using the so called force formalism. We find the analytical solutions for the radial profiles of velocity, specific angular momentum and specific energy of the circular …
We investigate the effects of space noncommutativity and the generalized uncertainty principle on the stability of circular orbits of particles in both a central force potential and Schwarzschild spacetime. We find noncommutative form of the effective potential which up to first order of noncommutativity parameter contains an angular momentum dependent extra term. This angular momentum dependent extra term affects the stability of circular orbits in such a way that the radius of a stable circular orbit in noncommutative space is larger than its commutative counterpart. In the case of large ang…
Ultrarelativistic circular orbits of spinning particles in a Schwarzschild field described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations are considered. The preliminary estimates of the possible synchrotron electromagnetic radiation of highly relativistic protons and electrons on these orbits in the gravitational field of a black hole are presented
Circular null geodesic orbits, in extremal Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes, are examined with regard to their stability, and compared with similar orbits in the near-extremal situation. Extremization of the effective potential for null circular orbits shows the existence of a stable circular geodesic in the extremal spacetime, precisely {\it on} the event horizon, which coincides with its null geodesic generator. Such an orbit also emerges as a global minimum of the effective potential for circular {\it timelike} orbits. This type of geodesic is of course absent in the corresponding near-extrema…
Equatorial motion of test particles in the Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes is considered. Circular orbits are determined, their properties are discussed for both the black-hole and naked-singularity spacetimes, and their relevance for thin accretion discs is established.
In this work we analyze the effects of an external magnetic field on charged particles on equatorial circular orbits in a Kerr spacetime, both in the black hole and the naked singularity cases. Understanding these phenomena is of great importance because equatorial circular orbits are a key ingredient of simple accretion disc models. We focus on two important magnetic field configurations: a) a uniform magnetic field aligned with the angular momentum and b) a dipolar magnetic field. We center our attention on the effect of these external fields on the marginally bounded and marginally stable e…
We study the behavior of nonzero rest mass spinning test particles moving along circular orbits in the Schwarzschild spacetime in the case in which the components of the spin tensor are allowed to vary along the orbit, generalizing some previous work.
In this paper the geodesics motion and accretion process around a subclass of Horndeski/Galileon black holes are investigated. Firstly, we present spherically symmetric geometries in a Horndeski/Galileon black hole spacetime by considering an isothermal fluid around the black hole. Then we focus on three main issues: in the first step circular orbits of test particles and their stability in equatorial plane are examined in details. Then, by treating perturbations via restoring forces, oscillations of particles around the central object are studied. Finally, the accretion process, the critical …
We investigate the motion of neutral test particles in the gravitational field of a mass $M$ with charge $Q$ described by the Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetime. We focus on the study of circular stable and unstable orbits around configurations describing either black holes or naked singularities. We show that at the classical radius, defined as $Q^2/M$, there exist orbits with zero angular momentum due to the presence of repulsive gravity. The analysis of the stability of circular orbits indicates that black holes are characterized by a continuous region of stability. In the case of naked sing…
In this paper we study circular orbits around higher dimensional rotating Myers-Perry and pure Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black holes. It turns out that for the former there occurs no potential well to harbour bound and thereby stable circular orbits. The only circular orbits that could occur are all unstable and their radius is bounded from the below by that of the photon circular orbit. On the other hand bound and stable circular orbits do exist for pure GB/Lovelock rotating black holes (the metric is though not an exact solution of pure Lovelock vacuum equation but it satisfies the equation in the l…
The LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission will observe in the low frequency band from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. In this regime, we expect the galactic binaries to be the dominant (by number) sources of gravitational waves signal. Considering that galactic binaries are composed of the most magnetized astrophysical objects in the universe (i.e., the white dwarfs and the neutron stars), LISA is expected to bring new informations about the origin and the nature of magnetism inside degenerated stars. Currently, the data processing assumes that the galactic binary systems are non-magnetic and in …
We study a simple analytic solution to Einstein's field equations describing a thin spherical shell consisting of collisionless particles in circular orbit. We then apply two independent criteria for the identification of circular orbits, which have recently been used in the numerical construction of binary black hole solutions, and find that both yield equivalent results. Our calculation illustrates these two criteria in a particularly transparent framework and provides further evidence that the deviations found in those numerical binary black hole solutions are not caused by the different cr…
We propose a method of determining solutions to the constraint equations of General Relativity approximately describing binary black holes in quasi-stationary circular orbits. Black holes with arbitrary linear momenta are constructed in the manner suggested by Brandt and Brugmann. The quasi-stationary circular orbits are determined by local minima in the ADM mass in a manner similar to Baumgarte and Cook; however, rather than fixing the area of the apparent horizon, we fix the value of the bare masses of the holes. We numerically generate an evolutionary sequence of quasi-stationary circular o…
Three natural classes of orthonormal frames, namely Frenet-Serret, Fermi-Walker and parallel transported frames, exist along any timelike world line in spacetime. Their relationships are investigated for timelike circular orbits in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes, and illustrated for black hole spacetimes.
The construction of initial-data sets representing binary black-hole configurations in quasi-circular orbits is studied in the context of the conformal-imaging formalism. An effective-potential approach for locating quasi-circular orbits is outlined for the general case of two holes of arbitrary size and with arbitrary spins. Such orbits are explicitly determined for the case of two equal-sized nonrotating holes, and the innermost stable quasi-circular orbit is located. The characteristics of this innermost orbit are compared to previous estimates for it, and the entire sequence of quasi-circu…
