In this paper, we propose a simple while effective unsupervised deep feature transfer algorithm for low resolution image classification. No fine-tuning on convenet filters is required in our method. We use pre-trained convenet to extract features for both high- and low-resolution images, and then feed them into a two-layer feature transfer network for knowledge transfer. A SVM classifier is learned directly using these transferred low resolution features. Our network can be embedded into the state-of-the-art deep neural networks as a plug-in feature enhancement module. It preserves data structures in feature space for high resolution images, and transfers the distinguishing features from a well-structured source domain (high resolution features space) to a not well-organized target domain (low resolution features space). Extensive experiments on VOC2007 test set show that the proposed method achieves significant improvements over the baseline of using feature extraction.
Cross-dataset transfer learning is an important problem in person re-identification (Re-ID). Unfortunately, not too many deep transfer Re-ID models exist for realistic settings of practical Re-ID systems. We propose a purely deep transfer Re-ID model consisting of a deep convolutional neural network and an autoencoder. The latent code is divided into metric embedding and nuisance variables. We then utilize an unsupervised training method that does not rely on co-training with non-deep models. Our experiments show improvements over both the baseline and competitors' transfer learning models.
Majority of the face recognition algorithms use query faces captured from uncontrolled, in the wild, environment. Often caused by the cameras limited capabilities, it is common for these captured facial images to be blurred or low resolution. Super resolution algorithms are therefore crucial in improving the resolution of such images especially when the image size is small requiring enlargement. This paper aims to demonstrate the effect of one of the state-of-the-art algorithms in the field of image super resolution. To demonstrate the functionality of the algorithm, various before and after 3…

Most existing person re-identification (re-id) methods require supervised model learning from a separate large set of pairwise labelled training data for every single camera pair. This significantly limits their scalability and usability in real-world large scale deployments with the need for performing re-id across many camera views. To address this scalability problem, we develop a novel deep learning method for transferring the labelled information of an existing dataset to a new unseen (unlabelled) target domain for person re-id without any supervised learning in the target domain. Specifi…
Person re-identification (Re-ID) models usually show a limited performance when they are trained on one dataset and tested on another dataset due to the inter-dataset bias (e.g. completely different identities and backgrounds) and the intra-dataset difference (e.g. camera invariance). In terms of this issue, given a labelled source training set and an unlabelled target training set, we propose an unsupervised transfer learning method characterized by 1) bridging inter-dataset bias and intra-dataset difference via a proposed ImitateModel simultaneously; 2) regarding the unsupervised person Re-I…

Unsupervised pre-training aims at learning transferable features that are beneficial for downstream tasks. However, most state-of-the-art unsupervised methods concentrate on learning global representations for image-level classification tasks instead of discriminative local region representations, which limits their transferability to region-level downstream tasks, such as object detection. To improve the transferability of pre-trained features to object detection, we present Deeply Unsupervised Patch Re-ID (DUPR), a simple yet effective method for unsupervised visual representation learning. …

Most of the proposed person re-identification algorithms conduct supervised training and testing on single labeled datasets with small size, so directly deploying these trained models to a large-scale real-world camera network may lead to poor performance due to underfitting. It is challenging to incrementally optimize the models by using the abundant unlabeled data collected from the target domain. To address this challenge, we propose an unsupervised incremental learning algorithm, TFusion, which is aided by the transfer learning of the pedestrians' spatio-temporal patterns in the target dom…

Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims at recognizing the same person from images taken across different cameras. To address this task, one typically requires a large amount labeled data for training an effective Re-ID model, which might not be practical for real-world applications. To alleviate this limitation, we choose to exploit a sufficient amount of pre-existing labeled data from a different (auxiliary) dataset. By jointly considering such an auxiliary dataset and the dataset of interest (but without label information), our proposed adaptation and re-identification network (ARN) performs …
Urban material recognition in remote sensing imagery is a highly relevant, yet extremely challenging problem due to the difficulty of obtaining human annotations, especially on low resolution satellite images. To this end, we propose an unsupervised domain adaptation based approach using adversarial learning. We aim to harvest information from smaller quantities of high resolution data (source domain) and utilize the same to super-resolve low resolution imagery (target domain). This can potentially aid in semantic as well as material label transfer from a richly annotated source to a target do…

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have exhibited impressive performance on image super-resolution tasks. However, these deep learning-based super-resolution methods perform poorly in real-world super-resolution tasks, where the paired high-resolution and low-resolution images are unavailable and the low-resolution images are degraded by complicated and unknown kernels. Unsupervised domain adaptation has attracted growing research attention on semantic segmentation. However, 1) most existing models cannot be directly applied into lesions transfer of medical images, due to the diverse appearances of same lesion among different datasets; 2) equal attention has been paid into all semantic representations instead of neglecting irrelevant knowledge, which leads to negative transfer of untransferable knowledge. Unsupervised image transfer enables intra- and inter-modality image translation in applications where a large amount of paired training data is not abundant. To ensure a structure-preserving mapping from the input to the target domain, existing methods for unpaired image transfer are commonly based on cycle-consistency, causing additional computational resources and instability due to the learning of an inverse mapping. This paper presents a novel method for uni-directional domain mapping that does not rely on any paired training data. A proper transfer is achieved by using a GAN architecture …

Unsupervised pretraining has achieved great success and many recent works have shown unsupervised pretraining can achieve comparable or even slightly better transfer performance than supervised pretraining on downstream target datasets. But in this paper, we find this conclusion may not hold when the target dataset has very few labeled samples for finetuning, \ie, few-label transfer. We analyze the possible reason from the clustering perspective: 1) The clustering quality of target samples is of great importance to few-label transfer; 2) Though contrastive learning is essential to learn how to…
Learning to transfer visual attributes requires supervision dataset. Corresponding images with varying attribute values with the same identity are required for learning the transfer function. This largely limits their applications, because capturing them is often a difficult task. To address the issue, we propose an unsupervised method to learn to transfer visual attribute. Inspecting visualization results from various unsupervised attribute transfer tasks, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The task of single image super-resolution (SISR) aims at reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image from a low-resolution (LR) image. Although significant progress has been made by deep learning models, they are trained on synthetic paired data in a supervised way and do not perform well on real data. There are several attempts that directly apply unsupervised image translation models to address such a problem. However, unsupervised low-level vision problem poses more challenge on the accuracy of translation. In this work,we propose a novel framework which is composed of two stages: 1) unsupe…
Many research efforts have been committed to unsupervised domain adaptation (DA) problems that transfer knowledge learned from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. Various DA methods have achieved remarkable results recently in terms of predicting ability, which implies the effectiveness of the aforementioned knowledge transferring. Most current super-resolution methods rely on low and high resolution image pairs to train a network in a fully supervised manner. However, such image pairs are not available in real-world applications. Instead of directly addressing this problem, most works employ the popular bicubic downsampling strategy to artificially generate a corresponding low resolution image. Unfortunately, this strategy introduces significant artifacts, removing natural sensor noise and other real-world characteristics. Super-resolution networks trained on such bicubic images therefore struggle to generalize to natur…
Unsupervised real world super resolution (USR) aims to restore high-resolution (HR) images given low-resolution (LR) inputs, and its difficulty stems from the absence of paired dataset. One of the most common approaches is synthesizing noisy LR images using GANs (i.e., degradation generators) and utilizing a synthetic dataset to train the model in a supervised manner. Although the goal of training the degradation generator is to approximate the distribution of LR images given a HR image, previous works have heavily relied on the unrealistic assumption that the conditional distribution is a del…

Despite the great success of deep model on Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) super-resolution(SR) for simulated data, most of them function unsatisfactory when applied to the real data, especially for unsupervised HSI SR methods.
