In this paper, we tackle a fully unsupervised super-resolution problem, i.e., neither paired images nor ground truth HR images. We assume that low resolution (LR) images are relatively easy to collect compared to high resolution (HR) images. By allowing multiple LR images, we build a set of pseudo pairs by denoising and downsampling LR images and cast the original unsupervised problem into a supervised learning problem but in one level lower. Though this line of study is easy to think of and thus should have been investigated prior to any complicated unsupervised methods, surprisingly, there are currently none. Even more, we show that this simple method outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised method with a dramatically shorter latency at runtime, and significantly reduces the gap to the HR supervised models. We submitted our method in NTIRE 2020 super-resolution challenge and won 1st in PSNR, 2nd in SSIM, and 13th in LPIPS. This simple method should be used as the baseline to beat in the future, especially when multiple LR images are allowed during the training phase. However, even in the zero-shot condition, we argue that this method can serve as a useful baseline to see the gap between supervised and unsupervised frameworks.

Blind image deblurring (BID) remains a challenging and significant task. Benefiting from the strong fitting ability of deep learning, paired data-driven supervised BID method has obtained great progress. However, paired data are usually synthesized by hand, and the realistic blurs are more complex than synthetic ones, which makes the supervised methods inept at modeling realistic blurs and hinders their real-world applications. As such, unsupervised deep BID method without paired data offers certain advantages, but current methods still suffer from some drawbacks, e.g., bulky model size, long …

The task of single image super-resolution (SISR) aims at reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image from a low-resolution (LR) image. Although significant progress has been made by deep learning models, they are trained on synthetic paired data in a supervised way and do not perform well on real data. There are several attempts that directly apply unsupervised image translation models to address such a problem. However, unsupervised low-level vision problem poses more challenge on the accuracy of translation. In this work,we propose a novel framework which is composed of two stages: 1) unsupe…
Recent years have witnessed growing interest in machine learning-based models and techniques for low-dose X-ray CT (LDCT) imaging tasks. The methods can typically be categorized into supervised learning methods and unsupervised or model-based learning methods. Supervised learning methods have recently shown success in image restoration tasks. However, they often rely on large training sets. Model-based learning methods such as dictionary or transform learning do not require large or paired training sets and often have good generalization properties, since they learn general properties of CT im…
In this paper, we explore a strong baseline for crowd counting and an unsupervised people localization algorithm based on estimated density maps. Firstly, existing methods achieve state-of-the-art performance based on different backbones and kinds of training tricks. We collect different backbones and training tricks and evaluate the impact of changing them and develop an efficient pipeline for crowd counting, which decreases MAE and RMSE significantly on multiple datasets. We also propose a clustering algorithm named isolated KMeans to locate the heads in density maps. This method can divide …

Unsupervised deep learning methods have shown promising performance for single-image depth estimation. Since most of these methods use binocular stereo pairs for self-supervision, the depth range is generally limited. Small-baseline stereo pairs provide small depth range but handle occlusions well. On the other hand, stereo images acquired with a wide-baseline rig cause occlusions-related errors in the near range but estimate depth well in the far range. In this work, we propose to integrate the advantages of the small and wide baselines. By training the network using three horizontally aligne…
Flood disasters cause enormous social and economic losses. However, both traditional physical models and learning-based flood forecasting models require massive historical flood data to train the model parameters. When come to some new site that does not have sufficient historical data, the model performance will drop dramatically due to overfitting. This technical report presents a Flood Domain Adaptation Network (FloodDAN), a baseline of applying Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) to the flood forecasting problem. Specifically, training of FloodDAN includes two stages: in the first stage, …
In this paper, we propose to improve the inference speed and visual quality of contemporary baseline of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) based unsupervised semantic inpainting. This is made possible with better initialization of the core iterative optimization involved in the framework. To our best knowledge, this is also the first attempt of GAN based video inpainting with consideration to temporal cues. On single image inpainting, we achieve about 4.5-5$\times$ speedup and 80$\times$ on videos compared to baseline. Simultaneously, our method has better spatial and temporal reconstructio…

Contrastive unsupervised learning has recently shown encouraging progress, e.g., in Momentum Contrast (MoCo) and SimCLR. In this note, we verify the effectiveness of two of SimCLR's design improvements by implementing them in the MoCo framework. With simple modifications to MoCo---namely, using an MLP projection head and more data augmentation---we establish stronger baselines that outperform SimCLR and do not require large training batches. We hope this will make state-of-the-art unsupervised learning research more accessible. Code will be made public.

We present a novel unsupervised learning framework for single view depth estimation using monocular videos. It is well known in 3D vision that enlarging the baseline can increase the depth estimation accuracy, and jointly optimizing a set of camera poses and landmarks is essential. In previous monocular unsupervised learning frameworks, only part of the photometric and geometric constraints within a sequence are used as supervisory signals. This may result in a short baseline and overfitting. Besides, previous works generally estimate a low resolution depth from a low resolution impute image. …
Egocentric perception has grown rapidly with the advent of immersive computing devices. Human gaze prediction is an important problem in analyzing egocentric videos and has primarily been tackled through either saliency-based modeling or highly supervised learning. We quantitatively analyze the generalization capabilities of supervised, deep learning models on the egocentric gaze prediction task on unseen, out-of-domain data. We find that their performance is highly dependent on the training data and is restricted to the domains specified in the training annotations. In this work, we tackle th…
Unsupervised learning based depth estimation methods have received more and more attention as they do not need vast quantities of densely labeled data for training which are touch to acquire. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised monocular video depth estimation method in natural scenes by taking advantage of the state-of-the-art method of Zhou et al. which jointly estimates depth and camera motion. Our method advances beyond the baseline method by three aspects: 1) we add an additional signal as supervision to the baseline method by incorporating left-right binocular images reconstru…
Unsupervised localization and segmentation are long-standing computer vision challenges that involve decomposing an image into semantically-meaningful segments without any labeled data. These tasks are particularly interesting in an unsupervised setting due to the difficulty and cost of obtaining dense image annotations, but existing unsupervised approaches struggle with complex scenes containing multiple objects. Differently from existing methods, which are purely based on deep learning, we take inspiration from traditional spectral segmentation methods by reframing image decomposition as a g…
Digitization techniques for biomedical images yield different visual patterns in radiological exams. These differences may hamper the use of data-driven approaches for inference over these images, such as Deep Neural Networks. Another noticeable difficulty in this field is the lack of labeled data, even though in many cases there is an abundance of unlabeled data available. Therefore an important step in improving the generalization capabilities of these methods is to perform Unsupervised and Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation between different datasets of biomedical images. In order to tackle …

Homography estimation is erroneous in the case of large-baseline due to the low image overlay and limited receptive field. To address it, we propose a progressive estimation strategy by converting large-baseline homography into multiple intermediate ones, cumulatively multiplying these intermediate items can reconstruct the initial homography. Meanwhile, a semi-supervised homography identity loss, which consists of two components: a supervised objective and an unsupervised objective, is introduced. The first supervised loss is acting to optimize intermediate homographies, while the second unsu…
Unsupervised learning of optical flow, which leverages the supervision from view synthesis, has emerged as a promising alternative to supervised methods. However, the objective of unsupervised learning is likely to be unreliable in challenging scenes. In this work, we present a framework to use more reliable supervision from transformations. It simply twists the general unsupervised learning pipeline by running another forward pass with transformed data from augmentation, along with using transformed predictions of original data as the self-supervision signal. Besides, we further introduce a l…
We address the problem of discovering part segmentations of articulated objects without supervision. In contrast to keypoints, part segmentations provide information about part localizations on the level of individual pixels. Capturing both locations and semantics, they are an attractive target for supervised learning approaches. However, large annotation costs limit the scalability of supervised algorithms to other object categories than humans. Unsupervised approaches potentially allow to use much more data at a lower cost. Most existing unsupervised approaches focus on learning abstract rep…

Representation learning with small labeled data have emerged in many problems, since the success of deep neural networks often relies on the availability of a huge amount of labeled data that is expensive to collect. To address it, many efforts have been made on training sophisticated models with few labeled data in an unsupervised and semi-supervised fashion. In this paper, we will review the recent progresses on these two major categories of methods. A wide spectrum of models will be categorized in a big picture, where we will show how they interplay with each other to motivate explorations …

Momentum Contrast (MoCo) achieves great success for unsupervised visual representation. However, there are a lot of supervised and semi-supervised datasets, which are already labeled. To fully utilize the label annotations, we propose Unified Momentum Contrast (UniMoCo), which extends MoCo to support arbitrary ratios of labeled data and unlabeled data training. Compared with MoCo, UniMoCo has two modifications as follows: (1) Different from a single positive pair in MoCo, we maintain multiple positive pairs on-the-fly by comparing the query label to a label queue. (2) We propose a Unified Cont…

We propose an unsupervised visual tracking method in this paper. Different from existing approaches using extensive annotated data for supervised learning, our CNN model is trained on large-scale unlabeled videos in an unsupervised manner. Our motivation is that a robust tracker should be effective in both the forward and backward predictions (i.e., the tracker can forward localize the target object in successive frames and backtrace to its initial position in the first frame). We build our framework on a Siamese correlation filter network, which is trained using unlabeled raw videos. Meanwhil…

We treat the problem of color enhancement as an image translation task, which we tackle using both supervised and unsupervised learning. Unlike traditional image to image generators, our translation is performed using a global parameterized color transformation instead of learning to directly map image information. In the supervised case, every training image is paired with a desired target image and a convolutional neural network (CNN) learns from the expert retouched images the parameters of the transformation. In the unpaired case, we employ two-way generative adversarial networks (GANs) to…
Majority of the face recognition algorithms use query faces captured from uncontrolled, in the wild, environment. Often caused by the cameras limited capabilities, it is common for these captured facial images to be blurred or low resolution. Super resolution algorithms are therefore crucial in improving the resolution of such images especially when the image size is small requiring enlargement. This paper aims to demonstrate the effect of one of the state-of-the-art algorithms in the field of image super resolution. To demonstrate the functionality of the algorithm, various before and after 3…
Omnidirectional multi-view stereo (MVS) vision is attractive for its ultra-wide field-of-view (FoV), enabling machines to perceive 360° 3D surroundings. However, the existing solutions require expensive dense depth labels for supervision, making them impractical in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose the first unsupervised omnidirectional MVS framework based on multiple fisheye images. To this end, we project all images to a virtual view center and composite two panoramic images with spherical geometry from two pairs of back-to-back fisheye images. The two 360° images formulate …
Partitioning an image into superpixels based on the similarity of pixels with respect to features such as colour or spatial location can significantly reduce data complexity and improve subsequent image processing tasks. Initial algorithms for unsupervised superpixel generation solely relied on local cues without prioritizing significant edges over arbitrary ones. On the other hand, more recent methods based on unsupervised deep learning either fail to properly address the trade-off between superpixel edge adherence and compactness or lack control over the generated number of superpixels. We demonstrate that challenging shortest path problems can be solved via direct spline regression from a neural network, trained in an unsupervised manner (i.e. without requiring ground truth optimal paths for training). To achieve this, we derive a geometry-dependent optimal cost function whose minima guarantees collision-free solutions. Our method beats state-of-the-art supervised learning baselines for shortest path planning, with a much more scalable training pipeline, and a significant speedup in inference time.
Cross-dataset transfer learning is an important problem in person re-identification (Re-ID). Unfortunately, not too many deep transfer Re-ID models exist for realistic settings of practical Re-ID systems. We propose a purely deep transfer Re-ID model consisting of a deep convolutional neural network and an autoencoder. The latent code is divided into metric embedding and nuisance variables. We then utilize an unsupervised training method that does not rely on co-training with non-deep models. Our experiments show improvements over both the baseline and competitors' transfer learning models.

Is all of machine learning supervised to some degree? The field of machine learning has traditionally been categorized pedagogically into $supervised~vs~unsupervised~learning$; where supervised learning has typically referred to learning from labeled data, while unsupervised learning has typically referred to learning from unlabeled data. In this paper, we assert that all machine learning is in fact supervised to some degree, and that the scope of supervision is necessarily commensurate to the scope of learning potential. In particular, we argue that clustering algorithms such as k-means, and …
