Traditional methods in Chinese typography synthesis view characters as an assembly of radicals and strokes, but they rely on manual definition of the key points, which is still time-costing. Some recent work on computer vision proposes a brand new approach: to treat every Chinese character as an independent and inseparable image, so the pre-processing and post-processing of each character can be avoided. Then with a combination of a transfer network and a discriminating network, one typography can be well transferred to another. Despite the quite satisfying performance of the model, the training process requires to be supervised, which means in the training data each character in the source domain and the target domain needs to be perfectly paired. Sometimes the pairing is time-costing, and sometimes there is no perfect pairing, such as the pairing between traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese characters. In this paper, we proposed an unsupervised typography transfer method which doesn't need pairing.
In this paper, we propose a new network architecture for Chinese typography transformation based on deep learning. The architecture consists of two sub-networks: (1)a fully convolutional network(FCN) aiming at transferring specified typography style to another in condition of preserving structure information; (2)an adversarial network aiming at generating more realistic strokes in some details. Unlike models proposed before 2012 relying on the complex segmentation of Chinese components or strokes, our model treats every Chinese character as an inseparable image, so pre-processing or post-prepr…
In this work, we explore the problem of generating fantastic special-effects for the typography. It is quite challenging due to the model diversities to illustrate varied text effects for different characters. To address this issue, our key idea is to exploit the analytics on the high regularity of the spatial distribution for text effects to guide the synthesis process. Specifically, we characterize the stylized patches by their normalized positions and the optimal scales to depict their style elements. Our method first estimates these two features and derives their correlation statistically.…
Learning to transfer visual attributes requires supervision dataset. Corresponding images with varying attribute values with the same identity are required for learning the transfer function. This largely limits their applications, because capturing them is often a difficult task. To address the issue, we propose an unsupervised method to learn to transfer visual attribute. The proposed method can learn the transfer function without any corresponding images. Inspecting visualization results from various unsupervised attribute transfer tasks, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We propose a method for unsupervised video object segmentation by transferring the knowledge encapsulated in image-based instance embedding networks. The instance embedding network produces an embedding vector for each pixel that enables identifying all pixels belonging to the same object. Though trained on static images, the instance embeddings are stable over consecutive video frames, which allows us to link objects together over time. Thus, we adapt the instance networks trained on static images to video object segmentation and incorporate the embeddings with objectness and optical flow fea…

We propose a method for generalizing deep learning for 3D point cloud registration on new, totally different datasets. It is based on two components, MS-SVConv and UDGE. Using Multi-Scale Sparse Voxel Convolution, MS-SVConv is a fast deep neural network that outputs the descriptors from point clouds for 3D registration between two scenes. UDGE is an algorithm for transferring deep networks on unknown datasets in a unsupervised way. The interest of the proposed method appears while using the two components, MS-SVConv and UDGE, together as a whole, which leads to state-of-the-art results on real…
Person re-identification (Re-ID) models usually show a limited performance when they are trained on one dataset and tested on another dataset due to the inter-dataset bias (e.g. completely different identities and backgrounds) and the intra-dataset difference (e.g. camera invariance). In terms of this issue, given a labelled source training set and an unlabelled target training set, we propose an unsupervised transfer learning method characterized by 1) bridging inter-dataset bias and intra-dataset difference via a proposed ImitateModel simultaneously; 2) regarding the unsupervised person Re-I…

With the strength of deep generative models, 3D pose transfer regains intensive research interests in recent years. Existing methods mainly rely on a variety of constraints to achieve the pose transfer over 3D meshes, e.g., the need for manually encoding for shape and pose disentanglement. In this paper, we present an unsupervised approach to conduct the pose transfer between any arbitrate given 3D meshes. Specifically, a novel Intrinsic-Extrinsic Preserved Generative Adversarial Network (IEP-GAN) is presented for both intrinsic (i.e., shape) and extrinsic (i.e., pose) information preservation…
The goal of 3D pose transfer is to transfer the pose from the source mesh to the target mesh while preserving the identity information (e.g., face, body shape) of the target mesh. Deep learning-based methods improved the efficiency and performance of 3D pose transfer. However, most of them are trained under the supervision of the ground truth, whose availability is limited in real-world scenarios. In this work, we present X-DualNet, a simple yet effective approach that enables unsupervised 3D pose transfer. Unsupervised crowd counting is a challenging yet not largely explored task. In this paper, we explore it in a transfer learning setting where we learn to detect and count persons in an unlabeled target set by transferring bi-knowledge learnt from regression- and detection-based models in a labeled source set. The dual source knowledge of the two models is heterogeneous and complementary as they capture different modalities of the crowd distribution. We formulate the mutual transformations between the outputs of regression- and detection-based models as two scene-agnostic transformers which ena…

Unsupervised domain translation has recently achieved impressive performance with Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and sufficient (unpaired) training data. However, existing domain translation frameworks form in a disposable way where the learning experiences are ignored and the obtained model cannot be adapted to a new coming domain. In this work, we take on unsupervised domain translation problems from a meta-learning perspective. We propose a model called Meta-Translation GAN (MT-GAN) to find good initialization of translation models. In the meta-training procedure, MT-GAN is explicitly…

We consider the problem of translating, in an unsupervised manner, between two domains where one contains some additional information compared to the other. The proposed method disentangles the common and separate parts of these domains and, through the generation of a mask, focuses the attention of the underlying network to the desired augmentation alone, without wastefully reconstructing the entire target. This enables state-of-the-art quality and variety of content translation, as demonstrated through extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Our method is also capable of adding th…

Unsupervised domain adaptation without consuming annotation process for unlabeled target data attracts appealing interests in semantic segmentation. However, 1) existing methods neglect that not all semantic representations across domains are transferable, which cripples domain-wise transfer with untransferable knowledge; 2) they fail to narrow category-wise distribution shift due to category-agnostic feature alignment. To address above challenges, we develop a new Critical Semantic-Consistent Learning (CSCL) model, which mitigates the discrepancy of both domain-wise and category-wise distribu…

Most of the proposed person re-identification algorithms conduct supervised training and testing on single labeled datasets with small size, so directly deploying these trained models to a large-scale real-world camera network may lead to poor performance due to underfitting. It is challenging to incrementally optimize the models by using the abundant unlabeled data collected from the target domain. To address this challenge, we propose an unsupervised incremental learning algorithm, TFusion, which is aided by the transfer learning of the pedestrians' spatio-temporal patterns in the target dom…

The accuracy and robustness of image classification with supervised deep learning are dependent on the availability of large-scale, annotated training data. However, there is a paucity of annotated data available due to the complexity of manual annotation. To overcome this problem, a popular approach is to use transferable knowledge across different domains by: 1) using a generic feature extractor that has been pre-trained on large-scale general images (i.e., transfer-learned) but which not suited to capture characteristics from medical images; or 2) fine-tuning generic knowledge with a relati…
Generalising deep networks to novel domains without manual labels is challenging to deep learning. This problem is intrinsically difficult due to unpredictable changing nature of imagery data distributions in novel domains. Pre-learned knowledge does not transfer well without making strong assumptions about the learned and the novel domains. Different methods have been studied to address the underlying problem based on different assumptions, e.g. from domain adaptation to zero-shot and few-shot learning. In this work, we address this problem by transfer clustering that aims to learn a discrimi…
Unsupervised domain adaptation for semantic segmentation aims to make models trained on synthetic data (source domain) adapt to real images (target domain). Previous feature-level adversarial learning methods only consider adapting models on the high-level semantic features. However, the large domain gap between source and target domains in the high-level semantic features makes accurate adaptation difficult. In this paper, we present the first attempt at explicitly using low-level edge information, which has a small inter-domain gap, to guide the transfer of semantic information. To this end,…
In this paper, we tackle the unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for semantic segmentation, which aims to segment the unlabeled real data using labeled synthetic data. The main problem of UDA for semantic segmentation relies on reducing the domain gap between the real image and synthetic image. To solve this problem, we focused on separating information in an image into content and style. Here, only the content has cues for semantic segmentation, and the style makes the domain gap. Thus, precise separation of content and style in an image leads to effect as supervision of real data even when …

We propose split-brain autoencoders, a straightforward modification of the traditional autoencoder architecture, for unsupervised representation learning. The method adds a split to the network, resulting in two disjoint sub-networks. Each sub-network is trained to perform a difficult task -- predicting one subset of the data channels from another. Together, the sub-networks extract features from the entire input signal. By forcing the network to solve cross-channel prediction tasks, we induce a representation within the network which transfers well to other, unseen tasks. This method achieves…

Domain adaptation enables the learner to safely generalize into novel environments by mitigating domain shifts across distributions. Previous works may not effectively uncover the underlying reasons that would lead to the drastic model degradation on the target task. In this paper, we empirically reveal that the erratic discrimination of the target domain mainly stems from its much smaller feature norms with respect to that of the source domain. To this end, we propose a novel parameter-free Adaptive Feature Norm approach. We demonstrate that progressively adapting the feature norms of the two…
Image clustering is to group a set of images into disjoint clusters in a way that images in the same cluster are more similar to each other than to those in other clusters, which is an unsupervised or semi-supervised learning process. It is a crucial and challenging task in machine learning and computer vision. The performances of existing image clustering methods have close relations with features used for clustering, even if unsupervised coding based methods have improved the performances a lot. To reduce the effect of clustering features, we propose a feature-weak-relevant method for image …
Domain adaptation deals with training models using large scale labeled data from a specific source domain and then adapting the knowledge to certain target domains that have few or no labels. Many prior works learn domain agnostic feature representations for this purpose using a global distribution alignment objective which does not take into account the finer class specific structure in the source and target domains. We address this issue in our work and propose an instance affinity based criterion for source to target transfer during adaptation, called ILA-DA. We first propose a reliable and…

To overcome this drawback, we propose a task transfer method to train models directly with labeled images and unlabeled event data. In recent years, there has been tremendous progress in the field of semantic segmentation. However, one remaining challenging problem is that segmentation models do not generalize to unseen domains. To overcome this problem, one either has to label lots of data covering the whole variety of domains, which is often infeasible in practice, or apply unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA), only requiring labeled source data. We then utilize an unsupervised training method that does not rely on co-training with non-deep models. Unsupervised pretraining has achieved great success and many recent works have shown unsupervised pretraining can achieve comparable or even slightly better transfer performance than supervised pretraining on downstream target datasets. But in this paper, we find this conclusion may not hold when the target dataset has very few labeled samples for finetuning, \ie, few-label transfer. We analyze the possible reason from the clustering perspective: 1) The clustering quality of target samples is of great importance to few-label transfer; 2) Though contrastive learning is essential to learn how to…
