The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a proposed Higgs/Z factory. The photon reconstruction is critical to its physics program. We study the photon reconstruction at the CEPC baseline detector, a Particle Flow oriented detector. We characterized the objective performance at both single-photon and di-photon samples. At the single-photon sample, we quantify the photon conversion rate, the differential reconstruction efficiency and energy resolution, and the identification performance. Using di-photon samples, our analysis shows that the CEPC baseline detector reaches a relative mass resolution of 1.7 - 2.2% of the Higgs boson at the $H\toγγ$ sample, and can reconstruct the $π^0$ with energy as high as 20 - 30 GeV. We also investigate the impact of geometry defects on photon energy resolution and discuss the possible corrections according to the reconstructed photon position.
The physics potential of the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) can be significantly strengthened by two detectors with complementary designs. A promising detector approach based on the Silicon Detector (SiD) designed for the International Linear Collider (ILC) is presented. Several simplifications of this detector for the lower energies expected at the CEPC are proposed. A number of cost optimizations of this detector are illustrated using full detector simulations. We show that the proposed changes will enable to reach the physics goals at the CEPC.
The Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) can be operated not only as a Higgs factory but also as a Z-boson factory, offering great opportunities for flavor physics studies where Particle Identification (PID) is critical. The baseline detector of the CEPC could record TOF and dE/dx information that can be used to distinguish particles of different species. We quantify the physics requirements and detector performance using physics benchmark analyzes with full simulation. We conclude that at the benchmark TOF performance of $50\,$ps, the dE/dx resolution should be better than 3% for incide…
We study the track reconstruction algorithms of the CEPC luminometer. Depend on the current geometry design, the conventional track reconstruction method is applied, but it suffers the energy leakage problem when tracks falling into the tile gaps regions. To solve this problem, a novel reconstruction method based on deep neural networks has been investigated, and the reconstruction efficiency has been improved significantly, as well as the energy and direction resolutions. This new reconstruction method is proposed to replace the conventional one for the CEPC luminometer.
Hadron calorimeter (HCAL) is an essential sub-detector of the baseline detector system for Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). We plan to build an Analog Hadron CALorimeter (AHCAL) prototype based on the Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA). The AHCAL of CEPC uses steel as absorber and scintillator tiles read out by Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) as sensitive medium. The energy linearity and resolution of the calorimeter depends on the light yield uniformity of sensitive medium. It is essential to qualify the entire detector production in order to select scintillator tiles with light yield…
The next generation of circular high energy collider is expected to be a lepton collider, FCC-ee at CERN or CEPC in China. However, the civil engineering concepts foresee to equip these colliders with bigger detector caverns than one would need for a lepton collider, so that they can be used for a hadron collider that may be installed in the same tunnel without further civil engineering. This opens up the possibility to install extra instrumentation at the cavern walls to search for new long-lived particles at the lepton collider. We use the example of heavy neutral leptons to show that such a…
The discovery of a SM Higgs boson at the LHC brought about great opportunity to investigate the feasibility of a Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) operating at center-of-mass energy of $\sim 240$ GeV, as a Higgs factory, with designed luminosity of about $2\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The CEPC provides a much cleaner collision environment than the LHC, it is ideally suited for studying the properties of Higgs boson with greater precision. Another advantage of the CEPC over the LHC is that the Higgs boson can be detected through the recoil mass method by only reconstructing Z boson de…
The very forward region is one of the most challenging regions to instrument at a future $e^+e^-$ collider. At CEPC, machine-detector interface includes, among others, a calorimeter dedicated for precision measurement of the integrated luminosity at a per mill level or better. Here we review a feasibility of such precision, from the point of view systematic effects arising from luminometer mechanical precision and positioning, beam-related requirements and physics background from two-photon processes. The impact of the beam energy spread and its uncertainty on the integrated luminosity precisi…

Following the reference design of the International Large Detector (ILD), a set of silicon-tungsten sampling ECAL geometries are implemented into the Geant4 simulation, whose performance is then scanned using Arbor algorithm. At single particle level, the photon energy response at different ECAL longitudinal structures is analyzed. At bi-particle sample, the separation performance with different ECAL transverse cell siz…

The proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) imposes new challenges for the vertex detector in terms of high resolution, low material, fast readout and low power. The Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology has been chosen as one of the most promising candidates to satisfy these requirements. A MAPS prototype, called TaichuPix1, based on a data-driven structure, together with a column drain readout architecture, benefiting from the ALPIDE and FE-I3 approaches, has been implemented to achieve fast readout. This paper presents the overall architecture of TaichuPix1, the exper…
We investigate the tracker configuration optimization for the Circular Electron Position Collider (CEPC), a proposed Higgs and $Z$ factory. Fixing the construction cost comparable to that of the baseline detector design and considering the benchmark channels ($Z\rightarrow f\bar{f}$, $WW$ fusion with $H\rightarrow f\bar{f}$, $ZH\rightarrowν\barνf\bar{f}$, and $t\bar{t}\rightarrow b\bar{b}μν_μud$) of various operating modes of the CEPC, we obtain the optimal tracker radius that provides the best average resolution of the track momentum or jet energy. The optimal tracker radii for track momentum…

The silicon pixel sensor is the core component of the vertex detector for the Circular Electron Positron Collider~(CEPC). The JadePix3 is a full-function large-size CMOS chip designed for the CEPC vertex detector. To test all the functions and the performance of this chip, we designed a test system based on the IPbus framework. The test system controls the parameters and monitors the status of the pixel chip. By integrating the jumbo frame feature into the IPbus suite, the block read/write speed is further extended in order to meet the specifications of the JadePix3. The robustness, scalabilit…

To meet the evolving requirements for particle track detector, Time Projection Chamber(TPC) detector prototype integrated with a UV laser track system was developed for the main track detector at Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC). This prototype consists of 6 horizontal laser tracks around TPC detector chamber, a fast electron…
The lepton identification is essential for the physics programs at high-energy frontier, especially for the precise measurement of the Higgs boson. For this purpose, a Toolkit for Multivariate Data Analysis (TMVA) based lepton identification (LICH) has been developed for detectors using high granularity calorimeters. Using the conceptual detector geometry for the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) and single charged particle samples with energy larger than 2 GeV, LICH identifies electrons/muons with efficiencies higher than 99.5% and controls the mis-identification rate of hadron to mu…

The outer water buffer is an economic option to shield the external radiative backgrounds for liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors. However, the consequential total reflection of scintillation light at the media boundary introduces extra complexity to the detector optics. This paper develops a precise detector-response model by investigating how total reflection complicates photon propagation and degrades reconstruction. We first parameterize the detector response by regression, providing an unbiased energy and vertex reconstruction in the total reflection region while keeping the number of …
High precision vertex and energy reconstruction is crucial for large liquid scintillator detectors such as JUNO, especially for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering by analyzing the energy spectrum of reactor neutrinos. This paper presents a data-driven method to obtain more realistic and more accurate expected PMT response of positron events in JUNO, and develops a simultaneous vertex and energy reconstruction method that combines the charge and time information of PMTs. For the JUNO detector, the impact of vertex inaccuracy on the energy resolution is about 0.6\%.
In this talk recent simulation results on the single high energy electron reconstruction with the Beam Calorimeter for the ILD detector are presented. Guinea Pig is used to generate the e+e- pair background and GEANT4 for the simulation of electron showers in the calorimeter. An algorithm was developed for the sHEe reconstruction on top of the large e+e- background. The efficiency of the sHEe reconstruction is estimated for the nominal and SB-2009 ILC beam parameters.
The application of machine learning techniques to the reconstruction of lepton energies in water Cherenkov detectors is discussed and illustrated for TITUS, a proposed intermediate detector for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. It is found that applying these techniques leads to an improvement of more than 50% in the energy resolution for all lepton energies compared to an approach based upon lookup tables. Machine learning techniques can be easily applied to different detector configurations and the results are comparable to likelihood-function based techniques that are currently used.
Large-volume liquid scintillator detectors with ultra-low background levels have been widely used to study neutrino physics and search for dark matter. Event vertex and event time are not only useful for event selection but also essential for the reconstruction of event energy. In this study, four event vertex and event time reconstruction algorithms using charge and time information collected by photomultiplier tubes were analyzed comprehensively. The effects of photomultiplier tube properties were also investigated. The results indicate that the transit time spread is the main effect degradi…
We present the reach of the proposed INO-ICAL in measuring the atmospheric-neutrino-oscillation parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ using full event-by-event reconstruction for the first time. We also study the fluctuations in the data and their effect on the precision measurements and mass-hierarchy analysis for a five-year exposure of the 50 kton ICAL detector. We find a mean resolution of $Δχ^2 \approx 2.9$, which rules out the wrong mass hierarchy of the neutrinos with a significance of approximately $1.7σ$. These results are similar to those to presented earlier studies that approximated …
Precise vertex reconstruction is essential for large liquid scintillator detectors. A novel method based on machine learning has been successfully developed to reconstruct the event vertex in JUNO previously. In this paper, the performance of machine learning based vertex reconstruction is further improved by optimizing the input images of the neural networks. By separating the information of different types of PMTs as well as adding the information of the second hit of PMTs, the vertex resolution is improved by about 9.4 % at 1 MeV and 9.8 % at 11 MeV, respectively.
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment. One of the main goals is to determine the neutrino mass ordering by precisely measuring the energy spectrum of reactor antineutrinos. For reactor antineutrino detection, cosmogenic backgrounds such as $^9$Li/$^8$He and fast neutrons induced by cosmic muons should be rejected carefully by applying muon veto cuts, which requires good muon track reconstruction. With a 20~kton liquid scintillator detector, simulation shows the proportion of muon bundles to be around 8\% in the JUNO, while its reconstructio…
This paper presents an investigation of the use of interest point detection algorithms from image processing applied to reconstruction of interactions in high granularity tracking detectors. Their purpose is to extract keypoints from the data as input to higher level reconstruction algorithms, replacing the role of human operators in event selection and reconstruction guidance. Simulations of nu_mu charged current events in a small liquid argon time projection chamber are used as a concrete example of a modern high granularity tracking detector. Data from the simulations are used to characteri…
A description is provided of the performance of the CMS detector for photon reconstruction and identification in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the CERN LHC. Details are given on the reconstruction of photons from energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and the extraction of photon energy estimates. The reconstruction of electron tracks from photons that convert to electrons in the CMS tracker is also described, as is the optimization of the photon energy reconstruction and its accurate modelling in simulation, in the analysis of the Higgs bos…
The powerful muon and tracker systems of the CMS detector together with dedicated reconstruction software allow precise and efficient measurement of muon tracks originating from proton-proton collisions. The standard muon reconstruction algorithms, however, are inadequate to deal with muons that do not originate from collisions. We present the design, implementation, and performance of a dedicated cosmic muon track reconstruction algorithm, which features pattern recognition optimized for muons that are not coming from the interaction point, i.e. cosmic muons and beam-halo muons. To evaluate t…
A novel approach is presented to unfold particle hit positions in tracking detectors with multiplexed readout representing an underdetermined system of linear equations. The method does not use any prior information about the hit positions, the only assumption in the procedure is that isolated hit signals generated on consecutive detector strips follow a smooth distribution. Ambiguities introduced by charge sharing from multiplexing are reduced by using a regularization technique. We have tested this method on a multiplexed 50x50 cm$^{2}$ Micromegas detector with 1037 strips and only 61 readou…
Liquid scintillators are commonly used to detect low energy neutrinos from the reactors, sun, and earth. It is a challenge to reconstruct deposited energies for a large liquid scintillator detector. For detectors with multiple optical mediums such as JUNO and SNO+, the prediction of the propagation of detected photons is extremely difficult due to mixed optical processes such as Rayleigh scattering, refraction and total reflection at their boundaries. Calibration based reconstruction methods consume impractical time since a large number of calibration points are required in a giant detector. I…
The topic of the paper is the position reconstruction from signals of segmented detectors. With the help of a simple simulation, it is shown that the position reconstruction using the centre-of-gravity method is strongly biased, if the width of the charge (or e.g. light) distribution at the electrodes (or photo detectors) is less than the read-out pitch. A method is proposed which removes this bias for events with signals in two or more read-out channels and thereby improves the position resolution. The method also provides an estimate of the position-response function for every event. Example…
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is one of two general-purpose detectors that measure the products of high energy particle interactions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The silicon pixel detector is the innermost component of the CMS tracking system. The detector which was in operation between 2009 and 2016 has now been replaced with an upgraded one in the beginning of 2017. During the previous shutdown period of the LHC, a prototype readout system and a third disk was inserted into the old forward pixel detector with eight prototype blades constructed using the new digital …
In the upcoming years, with the upgrade of the LHC to higher luminosities, CMS will be subject to an increasing flux of particles, especially in its most forward region, at | η| > 1.6. To consolidate the muon spectrometer of CMS and increase redundancy, the CMS GEM collaboration proposes to instrument the 1.6 < | η| < 2.1 region, originally foreseen to be equipped with RPC, with Triple-GEM detectors. This technology has proven to remain efficient under high fluxes and meets the requirements of CMS. This work, using simulations, studies three track reconstruction algorithms intended to be insta…

In these proceedings the tracking performance of the inner detector is presented on collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s}$ = 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The identification of resonances like $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryons in cascade decays via $K_{\mathrm{s}}$ and $Λ$ mesons is presented as well as the reconstruction of the $J / ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) mesons decaying into two muons. Furthermore, the performance of the track reconstruction and a data-driven method of estimating the track reconstruction efficiency as used in measurements of charged par…
Looking towards first LHC collisions, the ATLAS detector is being commissioned using the physics data available: cosmic rays and data taken during the LHC single beam operations at 450 GeV. During the installation of the ATLAS detector in the cavern, cosmic rays were collected with the different parts of the detector that were available. Combined cosmic runs taken with the full installed detector with and without magnetic field as well as a few single beam events recently recorded are being used to commission the full system prior to the first proton collisions.

RSDs (Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors) are n-in-p silicon sensors based on the LGAD (Low-Gain Avalanche Diode) technology, featuring a continuous gain layer over the whole sensor area. The truly innovative feature of these sensors is that the signal induced by an ionising particle is seen on several pixels, allowing the use of reconstruction techniques that combine the information from many read-out channels. In this contribution, the first application of a machine learning technique to RSD devices is presented. The spatial resolution of this technique is compared to that obtained with …
Neutrinos are particles that interact rarely, so identifying them requires large detectors which produce lots of data. Processing this data with the computing power available is becoming more difficult as the detectors increase in size to reach their physics goals. In liquid argon time projection chambers (TPCs) the charged particles from neutrino interactions produce ionization electrons which drift in an electric field towards a series of collection wires, and the signal on the wires is used to reconstruct the interaction. The MicroBooNE detector currently collecting data at Fermilab has 800…

FastDIRC is a novel fast Monte Carlo and reconstruction algorithm for DIRC detectors. A DIRC employs rectangular fused-silica bars both as Cherenkov radiators and as light guides. Cherenkov-photon imaging and time-of-propagation information are utilized by a DIRC to identify charged particles. GEANT-based DIRC Monte Carlo simulations are extremely CPU intensive. The FastDIRC algorithm permits fully simulating a DIRC detector more than 10000 times faster than using GEANT. This facilitates designing a DIRC-reconstruction algorithm that improves the Cherenkov-angle resolution of a DIRC detector b…
