RSDs (Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors) are n-in-p silicon sensors based on the LGAD (Low-Gain Avalanche Diode) technology, featuring a continuous gain layer over the whole sensor area. The truly innovative feature of these sensors is that the signal induced by an ionising particle is seen on several pixels, allowing the use of reconstruction techniques that combine the information from many read-out channels. In this contribution, the first application of a machine learning technique to RSD devices is presented. The spatial resolution of this technique is compared to that obtained with the standard RSD reconstruction methods that use analytical descriptions of the signal sharing mechanism. A Multi-Output regressor algorithm, trained with a combination of simulated and real data, leads to a spatial resolution of less than 2 $μm$ for a sensor with a 100 $μm$ pixel. The prospects of future improvements are also discussed.
Two design innovations, low-gain avalanche (Low-Gain Avalance Diode, LGAD) and resistive read-out (Resistive Silicon Detector, RSD), have brought strong performance improvements to silicon sensors. Large signals, due to the added gain mechanism, lead to improved temporal precision, while charge sharing, introduced by resistive read-out, allows for achieving excellent spatial resolution even with large pixels. LGAD- and RSD- based silicon sensors are now adopted, or considered, in several future experiments and are the basis for almost every next 4D-trackers. New results obtained with sensors b…
We designed, produced, and tested RSD (Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors) devices, an evolution of the standard LGAD (Low-Gain Avalanche Diode) technology where a resistive n-type implant and a coupling dielectric layer have been implemented. The first feature works as a resistive sheet, freezing the multiplied charges, while the second one acts as a capacitive coupling for readout pads. We succeeded in the challenging goal of obtaining very fine pitch (50, 100, and 200 um) while maintaining the signal waveforms suitable for high timing and 4D-tracking performances, as in the standard LGA…
Resistive AC-coupled Silicon Detectors (RSDs) are based on the Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology, characterized by a continuous gain layer, and by the innovative introduction of resistive read-out. Thanks to a novel electrode design aimed at maximizing signal sharing, RSD2, the second RSD production by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), achieves a position resolution on the whole pixel surface of about 8 $μm$ for 200-$μm$ pitch. RSD2 arrays have been tested using a Transient Current Technique setup equipped with a 16-channel digitizer, and results on spatial resolution have been obtained…
The basic principle of operation of silicon sensors with resistive read-out is built-in charge sharing. Resistive Silicon Detectors (RSD, also known as AC-LGAD), exploiting the signals seen on the electrodes surrounding the impact point, achieve excellent space and time resolutions even with very large pixels. In this paper, a TCT system using a 1064 nm picosecond laser is used to characterize sensors from the second RSD production at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler. The paper first introduces the parametrization of the errors in the determination of the position and time coordinates in RSD, then…
In this work, we introduce a new design concept: the DC-Coupled Resistive Silicon Detectors, based on the LGAD technology. This new approach intends to address a few known features of the first generation of AC-Coupled Resistive Silicon Detectors (RSD). Our simulation exploits a fast hybrid approach based on a combination of two packages, Weightfield2 and LTSpice. It demonstrates that the key features of the RSD design are maintained, yielding excellent timing and spatial resolutions: a few tens of ps and a few microns. In the presentation, we will outline the optimization methodology and the …
We report on an optimized micro-machined thermal flow-rate sensor as part of an autonomous multi-parameter sensing device for water network monitoring. The sensor has been optimized under the following constraints: low power consumption and high sensitivity, while employing a large thermal conductivity substrate, namely silicon. The resulting device consists of a platinum resistive heater deposited on a thin silicon pillar ~ 100 $μ$m high and 5 $μ$m wide in the middle of a nearly 100 $μ$m wide cavity. Operated under the anemometric scheme, the reported sensor shows a larger sensitivity in the …
The upgrade of the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detector, in order to increase the detector rate capability and to be able to work efficiently in high rate environment, consists in the reduction of the operating voltage along with the detection of signals which are few hundred μV small. The approach chosen by this project to achieve this objective is to develop a new kind of Front End electronics which, thanks to a mixed technology in Silicon and Silicon-Germanium, enhance the detector performances increasing its rate capability. The Front End developed is composed by a preamplifier in Silico…
Systematic investigations including both simulation and prototype tests have been done about the interpolating resistive readout structure with GEM (Gaseous Electron Multiplier) detector. From the simulation, we have a good knowledge of the process of charges diffusion on the surface of the readout plane and develop several reconstruction methods to determine the hit position. The total signal duration time of a typical event with the readout structure is about several hundred nanoseconds, which implied an ideal count rate up to 106Hz. A stable worked prototype was designed and fabricated afte…
In this paper we present a complete characterization of the first batch of Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors, called RSD1, designed at INFN Torino and manufactured by Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) in Trento. With their 100% fill-factor, RSD represent the new enabling technology for high-precision 4D-tracking. Indeed, being based on the well-known charge multiplication mechanism of Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD), they benefit from the very good timing performances of such technology together with an unprecedented resolution of the spatial tracking, which allows to reach the micron-le…
This paper presents the principles of operation of Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors (RSDs) and measurements of the temporal and spatial resolutions using a combined analysis of laser and beam test data. RSDs are a new type of n-in-p silicon sensor based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology, where the $n^+$ implant has been designed to be resistive, and the read-out is obtained via AC-coupling. The truly innovative feature of RSD is that the signal generated by an impinging particle is shared isotropically among multiple read-out pads without the need for floating electrodes …
Single gap (gas gap 2 mm) bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) modules of various sizes from 10 cm \times 10 cm to 1 m \times 1 m have been fabricated, characterized and optimized for efficiency and time resolution. Thin layers of different grades of silicone compound are applied to the inner electrode surfaces to make them smooth and also to reduce the surface resistivity. In the silicone coated RPCs an efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode of operation. Before fabrication of detectors the electrical properties …
The two-dimensional interpolating readout concept of the Virtual-Pixel detector (ViP detector) goes along with an enormous reduction of electronic channels compared to pure pixel devices. However, the special concept of the readout structure demands for adequate position reconstruction methods. Theoretical considerations reflecting the choice and the combination of linear algorithms with emphasis on correct position reconstruction and spatial resolution are presented. A subsequent two-dimensional coordinate transformation further improves the image response of the system. Measured images show …
The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration, as part of its detector R\&D program, has developed prototype stacks of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) to study their performance. These stacks have also been used as testbenches for the development of related hardware and software. A crucial parameter in the characterisation of these detectors and other physics studies is the detection efficiency, which is estimated from track fitting of cosmic muons passing through the stack. So far, a simple straight line fit was used for track fitting, which was sensitive to noise hits and led to r…
This paper presents a first study of the performance of a novel 2D position-sensitive microstrip detector, where the resistive charge division method was implemented by replacing the metallic electrodes with resistive electrodes made of polycrystalline silicon. A characterization of two proof-of-concept prototypes with different values of the electrode resistivity was carried out using a pulsed Near Infra-Red laser. The experimental data were compared with the electrical simulation of the sensor equivalent circuit coupled to simple electronics readout circuits. The good agreement between exper…
The algorithms for position reconstruction in silicon micro-strip detectors are studied, and the signals of a minimum ionizing particle are simulated. The center-of-gravity distributions of the data events allow the fine tuning of the signal forms and of the strip response functions. In the sensors with floating strips the response function turns out to roughly approximate the response of a triangular function for the size of the signal involved. The simulations are extended to non orthogonal incidence. In these directions, and in general for all the asymmetric signal distributions, the standa…
We are developing position sensitive silicon detectors (PSDs) which have an electrode at each of four corners so that incident position of a charged particle can be obtained with signal from the electrodes. It is expected that the position resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the ILD detector will be improved by introducing PSDs to detection layers. We have been developing the PSDs for several years. In the previous production we found that the charge separation is not optimally done due to the readout impedance. To solve the issue, we produced new PSDs with higher surface r…

Cosmic rays detected by scintillation counters were used to trigger the readout of up to 15% of the final silicon strip detector, and over 4.7 million events were recorded. This document describes the cosmic track reconstruction and presents results on the performance of track and hi…

We propose an algorithm, deployable on a highly-parallelized graph computing architecture, to perform rapid reconstruction of charged-particle trajectories in the high energy collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and future colliders. We use software emulation to show that the algorithm can achieve an efficiency in excess of 99.95% for reconstruction with good accuracy. The algorithm can be implemented on silicon-based integrated circuits using field-programmable gate array technology. Our approach can enable a fast trigger for massive charged particles that decay invisibly in the tracking v…

The India based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is a mega science project of India, which is going to use near about 30, 000 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) as active detector elements for the study of atmospheric neutrino oscillations. Each RPC detector will consist of two orthogonally placed readout strips panel for picking the signals generated in the gas chamber. The area of RPC detector in INO-ICAL (Iron Calorimeter) experiment will be 2m x 2m, therefore the dimension of readout strips panel will also be of 2m x 2m. To get undistorted signals pass through the readout strips panel to frontend el…
The physics program of future lepton colliders such as the ILC, will benefit from a jet energy resolution in the range 3-4%. The International Large Detector (ILD) reaches this goal over a large range of jet energies. In this paper, we report on the dependence of the simulated ILD performance on various parameters of its silicon-tungsten ECAL. We investigate the effects of dead areas in the silicon sensors, the thickness of the PCB at the heart of the detector, and the robustness of its performance with respect to dead channels, noise, mis-calibration and cross-talk.

In July 2018 an optimization run for the proposed charm cross section measurement for SHiP was performed at the CERN SPS. A heavy, moving target instrumented with nuclear emulsion films followed by a silicon pixel tracker was installed in front of the Goliath magnet at the H4 proton beamline. Behind the magnet, scintillating-fibre, drift-tube and RPC detectors were placed. The purpose of this run was to validate the measurement's feasibility, to develop the required analysis tools and fine-tune the detector layout. In this paper, we present the track reconstruction in the pixel tracker and the…
An amplifier has been designed for optimal use of position sensitive thermal neutron detectors using the principle of resistive charge division. The important points in this optimization are: high counting rates and good spatial resolution. This amplifier is built as a hybrid circuit and is now used on several new instruments at the ILL. It consists of a fast low noise current pre-amplifier, a gaussian shaping circuit based on a 4th order active filter and an essentially noiseless baseline reconstruction. In this paper, we present a rather complete theoretical analysis of the problem that lead…

The low-noise analog ASIC VA140 was used in this study for DSSD signal readout. A beam test on the DSSD module was performed at the Beijing Test Beam Facility of the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) using a 400~800 MeV/c proton beam. The pedestal analysis results, RMSE noise, gain correction, and particle incident position reconstruction of the DSSD module are presented.
The Silicon Vertex Detector of Belle II is a state-of-the-art tracking and vertexing system based on double-sided silicon strip sensors, designed and fabricated by a large international collaboration in the period 2012--2018. Since 2019 it has been in operation providing high quality data with a small number of defective channels (<1%), a large hit-finding efficiency (>99%), a good signal-to-noise ratio (well in excess of 10 for all sensor configurations and tracks). Together with the good control over the alignment, these are all essential factors to achieve good tracking reconstruction and p…

We present the performance of multiplexed XY resistive Micromegas detectors tested in the CERN SPS 100 GeV/c electron beam at intensities up to 3.3 $\times$ 10$^5$ e$^- $/(s$\cdot$cm$^2$). So far, all studies with multiplexed Micromegas have only been reported for tests with radioactive sources and cosmic rays. The use of multiplexed modules in high intensity environments was not explored due to the effect of ambiguities in the reconstruction of the hit point caused by the multiplexing feature. At the beam intensities analysed in this work and with a multiplexing factor of 5, more than 50% lev…
The inner drift chamber of the BESIII is encountering serious aging problem after five year's running. For the first layer, the decrease in gas gain is about 26% from 2009 to 2013. The upgrade of the inner tracking detector has become an urgent problem for the BESIII experiment. An inner tracker using CMOS pixel sensors is an important candidate because of its great advantages on spatial resolution and radiation hardness. In order to carry out a Monte Carlo study on the expected performance, a Geant4-based full simulation for the silicon pixel detector has been implemented. The tracking method…

The precise measurement of hadronic jet energy is crucial to maximise the physics reach of a future Linear Collider. An important ingredient required to achieve this is the efficient identification of photons within hadronic showers. One configuration of the ILD detector concept employs a highly granular silicon-tungsten sampling calorimeter to identify and measure photons, and the GARLIC algorithm described in this paper has been developed to identify photons in such a calorimeter. We describe the algorithm and characterise its performance using events fully simulated in a model of the ILD de…

Performances of the artificial retina algorithm are assessed using the official Monte Carlo samples of the LHCb experiment. We found performances for the retina pattern-recognition algorithm comparable with the full LHCb reconstruction algorithm.
The ALICE detector was designed to track and identify particles in a wide transverse momentum range, from more than 100 GeV/c down to ~100 MeV/c. The innermost barrel-like detector, the Inner Tracking System (ITS), is dedicated to precise tracking and to primary and secondary vertices reconstruction. A new fitting method is explored for momentum reconstruction of tracks in a constant magnetic field for a silicon-strip tracker. Substantial increases of momentum resolution respect to standard fit is obtained. The key point is the use of a realistic probability distribution for each hit (heteroscedasticity). Two different methods are used for the fits, the first method introduces an effective variance for each hit, the second method implements the maximum likelihood search. The tracker model is similar to the PAMELA tracker. Each side, of the two sided of the PAMELA detectors, is simulated as…

Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber(MRPC) is a widely used timing detector with a typical time resolution of about 60 ps. This makes MRPC an optimal choice for the time of flight(ToF) system in many large physics experiments. The prior work on improving the time resolution is mainly focused on altering the detector geometry, and therefore the improvement of the data analysis algorithm has not been fully explored. This paper proposes a new time reconstruction algorithm based on the deep neural networks(NN) and improves the MRPC time resolution by about 10 ps. Since the development of the high ene…
