Structurally chiral materials hosting multifold fermions with large topological number have attracted considerable attention because of their naturally long surface Fermi arcs and bulk quantized circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). Multifold fermions only appear in metallic states, and therefore, most studies so far have only focused on the semimetals in compounds with chiral crystal structures. In this work, we show that the structurally chiral topological trivial insulators are also exotic states, which is interesting from the application point of view, owing to their natural advantage to host a large bulk photovoltaic effect in the visible wavelength region. In the last decades, the shift current in the visible wavelength region was limited to be 10 uA/V2 . By scanning the insulators with chiral structure, we found a class of compounds with photoconductivity ranging from 20 to 80 uA/V2 , which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than that reported in other real materials. This work illustrates that the compounds with chiral structure can host both quantum CPGE and a strong shift current in the second order optical response. Moreover, this work offers a good platform for the study of the shift current and its future application by putting the focus on insulator with chiral lattices, so far overlooked in photovoltaic technologies.
We present state-of-the-art first-principle calculations of the electronic and optical properties of silicon allotropes with interesting characteristics for applications in thin-film solar cells. These new phases consist of distorted sp$^3$ silicon networks and have a lower formation energy than other experimentally produced silicon phases. Some of these structures turned out to have quasi-direct and dipole-allowed band gaps in the range 0.8--1.5\,eV, and to display absorption coefficients comparable with those of chalcopyrites used in thin-film record solar cells.

The bulk photovoltaic effect is a long-known but poorly understood phenomenon. Recently, however, the multiferroic bismuth ferrite has been observed to produce strong photovoltaic response to visible light, suggesting that the effect has been underexploited as well. Here we present three polar oxides in the LiNbO$_3$ structure that we predict to have band gaps in the 1-2 eV range and very high bulk photovoltaic response: PbNiO$_3$, Mg$_{1/2}$Zn$_{1/2}$PbO$_3$, and LiBiO$_3$. All three have band gaps determined by cations with $d^{10}s^0$ electronic configurations, leading to conduction bands c…
We have studied ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in atomic layer deposited (ALD) 40-nm thick SnTiO$_{x}$ films deposited directly onto p-type (001)Si substrate. These films showed well-saturated, square and repeatable hysteresis loops with remnant polarization of 1.5 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$ at room temperature, as detected by out-of-plane polarization versus electric field (P-E) and field cycling measurements. A photo-induced enhancement in ferroelectricity was also observed as the spontaneous polarization increased under white-light illumination. The ferroelectricity exhibits relaxor character…
CdS thin film samples were fabricated using spin coating technique on normal glass and conductive glass substrates and annealed at different temperatures. According to the XRD patterns of films prepared on normal glass substrates, polycrystalline films are consist of single phase of CdS. Films synthesized on conductive glass substrates were employed for photovoltaic measurements. Variation of photovoltaic properties with annealing temperature was investigated. The liquid junction photocell was measured in the electrolyte of Na2S2O3/I2. Then, the short circuit photo current and open circuit pho…
The photovoltaic effect in the BiFeO3/TiO2 heterostructures can be tuned by epitaxial strain and an electric field in the visible-light region which is manifested by the enhancement of absorption activity in the heterojunction under tensile strain and an electric field based on the first-principles calculations. It is suggested that there are coupling between photon, spin carrier, charge, orbital, and lattice in the interface of the bilayer film which makes the heterojunction an intriguing candidate towards fabricating the multifunctional photoelectric devices based on spintronics. The microsc…
We calculate the shift current response, which has been identified as the dominant mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect, for the polar compounds LiAsS$_\text{2}$, LiAsSe$_\text{2}$, and NaAsSe$_\text{2}$. We find that the magnitudes of the photovoltaic responses in the visible range for these compounds exceed the maximum response obtained for BiFeO$_\text{3}$ by 10 - 20 times. We correlate the high shift current response with the existence of $p$ states at both the valence and conduction band edges, as well as the dispersion of these bands, while also showing that high polarization is no…
The correlation between the shift current mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) and the structural and electronic properties of ferroelectric perovskite oxides is not well understood. Here, we study and engineer the shift current photovoltaic effect using a visible-light-absorbing ferroelectric Pb(Ni$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$)O$_{3-x}$ solid solution from first principles. We show that the covalent orbital character dicates the direction, magnitude, and onset energy of shift current in a predictable fashion. In particular, we find that the shift current response can be enhanced via electrost…
Ferroelectrics with suitable band gaps have recently attracted attention as candidate solar absorbing materials for photovoltaics. The inversion symmetry breaking may promote the separation of photo-excited carriers and allow voltages higher than the band gap. However, these effects are not fully understood, in part because of a lack of suitable model systems for studying these effects in detail. Here, we report properties of ferroelectric Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ and Sn$_2$P$_2$Se$_6$ using first principles calculations. Results are given for the electronic structure, carrier pocket shapes, optical a…
We report nearly single phase Pb(Zr0.14Ti0.56Ni0.30)O3-delta(PZTNi30) ferroelectric having large remanent polarization (15-30 μC/cm2), 0.3-0.4 V open circuit voltage (VOC), reduced band gap (direct 3.4 eV, and indirect 2.9 eV), large ON and OFF photo current ratio, and the fast decay time. Reasonably good photo current density (1-5 μA/cm2) was obtained without gate bias voltage which significantly increased with large bias field. Ferroelectric polarization dictates the polarity of VOC and direction of short circuit current (ISC), a step forward towards the realization of noncentrosymmetric fer…
Hybrid halide perovskites exhibit nearly 20% power conversion efficiency, but the origin of their high efficiency is still unknown. Here, we compute the shift current, a dominant mechanism of bulk photovoltaic (PV) effect for ferroelectric photovoltaics, in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$ from first principles. We find that these materials give approximately three times larger shift current PV response to near-IR and visible light than the prototypical ferroelectric photovoltaic BiFeO$_3$. The molecular orientations of CH$_3$NH$_3^{+}$ can strongly affect the correspond…
The connection between noncentrosymmetric materials' structure, electronic structure, and bulk photovoltaic performance remains not well understood. In particular, it is still unclear which photovoltaic (PV) mechanism(s) are relevant for the recently demonstrated visible-light ferroelectric photovoltaic (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$. In this paper, we study the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) of (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$ and KNbO$_{3}$ by calculating the shift current from first principles. The effects of structural phase, lattice distortion, oxygen vacancies, cation arrangement, composition, and strain…
CaOFeS is a semiconducting oxysulfide with polar layered triangular structure. Here a comprehensive theoretical study has been performed to reveal its physical properties, including magnetism, electronic structure, phase transition, magnetodielectric effect, as well as optical absorption. Our calculations confirm the Ising-like G-type antiferromagnetic ground state driven by the next-nearest neighbor exchanges, which breaks the trigonal symmetry and is responsible for the magnetodielectric effect driven by exchange striction. In addition, a large coefficient of visible light absorption is pred…
Optimal materials to induce bulk photovoltaic effects should lack inversion symmetry and have an optical gap matching the energies of visible radiation. Ferroelectric perovskite oxides such as BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ exhibit substantial polarization and stability, but have the disadvantage of excessively large band gaps. We use both density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory calculations to design a new class of Mott multiferroics--double perovskite oxides $A_2$VFeO$_6$ ($A$=Ba, Pb, etc). While neither perovskite $A$VO$_3$ nor $A$FeO$_3$ is ferroelectric, in the double perovskit…
We use a first-principles density functional theory approach to calculate the shift current and linear absorption of uniformly illuminated single-layer Ge and Sn monochalcogenides. We predict strong absorption in the visible spectrum and a large effective three-dimensional shift current ($\sim$100 $μ$A/V$^2$), larger than has been previously observed in other polar systems. Moreover, we show that the integral of the shift-current tensor is correlated to the large spontaneous effective three-dimensional electric polarization ($\sim$1.9 C/m$^2$). Our calculations indicate that the shift current …
We study the Fermi surface contribution to the nonlinear DC photocurrent at quadratic order in a spatially uniform optical field in the ultra-clean limit. In addition to shift and injection current, we find that polarized light incident on a metallic system generates an intrinsic contribution to the bulk photovoltaic effect deriving from photoinduced electronic transitions on the Fermi surface. In {velocity} gauge, this contribution originates in both the coherent band off-diagonal and diagonal parts of the density matrix, describing respectively, the coherent wave function evolution and the c…
Coupling different physical properties is a fascinating subject of physics. Already well-known are the multiferroics which show properties of ferroelectrics and magnets. But ferroelectricity by itself also entails the bulk photovoltaic effect, a light-matter interaction which generates dc currents. Here we propose a magnetic photogalvanic effect that couples the magnetism to the light-matter interaction. This phenomenon emerges from the $\mathbf{k}$ to $\mathbf{-k}$ symmetry-breaking in the band structure and does not require a static polarization. It is distinct from other known bulk photovol…
Surface plasmon resonances generated in metallic nanostructures can be utilized to tailor electromagnetic fields. The precise spatial arrangement of such structures can result in surprising optical properties that are not found in any naturally occurring material. Here, the designed activity emerges from collective effects of singular components equipped with limited individual functionality. Top-down fabrication of plasmonic materials with a predesigned optical response in the visible range by conventional lithographic methods has remained challenging due to their limited resolution, the comp…
Converting light into steady currents and spin-currents in two-dimensional (2D) platform is essential for future energy harvesting and spintronics. We show that the giant and modulable bulk photovoltaic effects (BPVEs) can be achieved in air-stable 2D antiferromagnet (AFM) monolayer MnPSe3, with nonlinear photoconductance > 4000 nm$\cdotμ$A/V2 and photo-spin-conductance > 2000 (nm$\cdotμ$A/V2 $\hbar$/2e) in the visible spectrum. The propagation and the spin-polarizations of photocurrents can be switched via simply rotating the N$é$el vector. We unveil that the PT-symmetry, mirror symmetries, a…
