Ferroelectrics with suitable band gaps have recently attracted attention as candidate solar absorbing materials for photovoltaics. The inversion symmetry breaking may promote the separation of photo-excited carriers and allow voltages higher than the band gap. However, these effects are not fully understood, in part because of a lack of suitable model systems for studying these effects in detail. Here, we report properties of ferroelectric Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ and Sn$_2$P$_2$Se$_6$ using first principles calculations. Results are given for the electronic structure, carrier pocket shapes, optical absorption and transport. We find indirect band gaps of 2.20 eV and 1.55 eV, respectively, and favorable band structures for carrier transport, including both holes and electrons. Strong absorption is found above the direct gaps of 2.43 eV and 1.76 eV. Thus these compounds may serve as useful model systems for understanding photovoltaic effects in ferroelectric semiconductors.
The correlation between the shift current mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) and the structural and electronic properties of ferroelectric perovskite oxides is not well understood. Here, we study and engineer the shift current photovoltaic effect using a visible-light-absorbing ferroelectric Pb(Ni$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$)O$_{3-x}$ solid solution from first principles. We show that the covalent orbital character dicates the direction, magnitude, and onset energy of shift current in a predictable fashion. In particular, we find that the shift current response can be enhanced via electrost…
We have studied ferroelectricity and photovoltaic effects in atomic layer deposited (ALD) 40-nm thick SnTiO$_{x}$ films deposited directly onto p-type (001)Si substrate. These films showed well-saturated, square and repeatable hysteresis loops with remnant polarization of 1.5 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$ at room temperature, as detected by out-of-plane polarization versus electric field (P-E) and field cycling measurements. A photo-induced enhancement in ferroelectricity was also observed as the spontaneous polarization increased under white-light illumination. The ferroelectricity exhibits relaxor character…

Photonic crystals (PCs) enter this paradigm with optical materials that allow the control of light propagation and can be used for optical communication, and photonics and electronics integration making use of materials ranging from semiconductors, to metals, metamaterials, and topological insulators, to mention but a few. In particular, here we show how designer superconductor materials integra…
We report nearly single phase Pb(Zr0.14Ti0.56Ni0.30)O3-delta(PZTNi30) ferroelectric having large remanent polarization (15-30 μC/cm2), 0.3-0.4 V open circuit voltage (VOC), reduced band gap (direct 3.4 eV, and indirect 2.9 eV), large ON and OFF photo current ratio, and the fast decay time. Reasonably good photo current density (1-5 μA/cm2) was obtained without gate bias voltage which significantly increased with large bias field. Ferroelectric polarization dictates the polarity of VOC and direction of short circuit current (ISC), a step forward towards the realization of noncentrosymmetric fer…
Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric write magnetic-read memory devices. In a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the strain mediated coupling exploits piezoelectricity/electrostriction in ferroelectric phase and magnetostriction/piezomagnetism in ferromagnetic phase. Such verity of these combined effect can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as electric field, temperature or magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remo…

Ferroelectric $π$-stacked molecular wires for solar cell applications are theoretically designed, in such a way that their energy gaps fall within visible and infrared range of the Sun radiation. Band engineering is tailored by a modification of the number of the aromatic rings and via a choice of the number and kind of the dipole groups. The electronic structures of molecular wires and the chemical character of the electron-hole pair are analyzed within the density functional theory (DFT) framework and the hybrid DFT approach by means of the B3LYP scheme. Moreover, it is found that one of the…
Bulk chalcogenide perovskite BaZrS3 (BZS), with a direct band gap in visible region, is an important photovoltaic material, albeit with limited applicability owing to its antiferroelectric (AF) nature. Presently, ferroelectric (FE) perovskite-based photovoltaics are attracting enormous attention for environmental stability and better energy conversion efficiency through enhanced charge separation, owing to loss of center of inversion symmetry. We report on antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AF-FE) phases of BZS thin film, grown with chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using temperature-dependent Ra…
Layered perovskites $A_3M_2$O$_7$ are known to exhibit the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity. Despite experimentally confirmed cases (e.g. nonmagnetic $M$=Ti and Sn), the ferroelectricity in magnetic Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ remains a puzzle. Here, the structural, ferroelectric, magnetoelectric, and optical properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$ are systematically investigated. Switchable polarization is directly measured, demonstrating its ferroelectricity. In addition, magnetoelectric response is also evidenced, implying the coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity. Furthermore, strong vis…
Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) can form at the surface of oxides and semiconductors or in carefully designed quantum wells and interfaces. Depending on the shape of the confining potential, 2DEGs may experience a finite electric field, which gives rise to relativistic effects such as the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Although the amplitude of this electric field can be modulated by an external gate voltage, which in turn tunes the 2DEG carrier density, sheet resistance and other related properties, this modulation is volatile. Here, we report the design of a ''ferroelectric'' 2DEG whose …
Heterostructures based on two dimensional (2D) materials offer the possibility to achieve synergistic functionalities which otherwise remain secluded by their individual counterparts. Herein ferroelectric polarization switching in alpha-In2Se3 has been utilized to engineer multilevel non-volatile conduction states in partially overlapping alpha-In2Se3-MoS2 based ferroelectric semiconducting field effect device. In particular, we demonstrate how the intercoupled ferroelectric nature of alpha-In2Se3 allows to non-volatilely switch between n-i and n-i-n type junction configurations based on a nov…

We report nanoscale bandgap engineering via a local strain across the inhomogeneous ferroelectric interface, which is controlled by the visible-light-excited probe voltage. Switchable photovolatic effects and the spectral response of the photocurrent were explore to illustrate the reversible bandgap variation (~0.3eV). This local-strain-engineered bandgap has been further revealed by in situ probe-voltage-assisted valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Phase-field simulations and first-principle calculations were also employed for illustration of the large local strain and the bandg…
Enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity of transition metal-doped ceria (CeO2) nanomaterials have experimentally been demonstrated, whereas there are very few reports mentioning the mechanism of this behavior. Here we use first-principles calculations to explore the origin of enhanced photocatalytic performance of CeO2 doped with transition metal impurities (Fe, Cr and Co). When a transition metal atom substitutes a Ce atom into CeO2, t2g and eg levels of 3d orbits appear in the middle of band gap owing to the effect of cubic ligand field, and the former is higher than latter. Interesti…
Perovskite titanates such as SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) exhibit a wide range of important functional properties, including high electron mobility, ferroelectricity, and excellent photocatalytic performance. The wide optical band gap of titanates limits their use in these applications, however, making them ill-suited for integration into solar energy harvesting technologies. Our recent work has shown that by doping STO with equal concentrations of La and Cr we can enhance visible light absorption in epitaxial thin films while avoiding any compensating defects. In this work, we explore the optical proper…
Low-dimensional multiferroic materials hold great promises in miniaturized device applications such as nanoscale transducers, actuators, sensors, photovoltaics, and nonvolatile memories. Here, using first-principles theory we predict that two-dimensional (2D) monolayer Group IV monochalcogenides including GeS, GeSe, SnS, and SnSe are a class of 2D semiconducting multiferroics with strongly coupled giant in-plane spontaneous ferroelectric polarization and spontaneous ferroelastic lattice strain that are thermodynamically stable at room temperature and beyond, and can be effectively modulated by…
Optimal materials to induce bulk photovoltaic effects should lack inversion symmetry and have an optical gap matching the energies of visible radiation. Ferroelectric perovskite oxides such as BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ exhibit substantial polarization and stability, but have the disadvantage of excessively large band gaps. We use both density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory calculations to design a new class of Mott multiferroics--double perovskite oxides $A_2$VFeO$_6$ ($A$=Ba, Pb, etc). While neither perovskite $A$VO$_3$ nor $A$FeO$_3$ is ferroelectric, in the double perovskit…
In this paper we study numerically and experimentally the possibility of using metallic photonic crystals (PCs) of different geometries (log-piles, direct and inverse opals) as visible light sources. It is found that by tuning geometrical parameters of a direct opal PC one can achieve substantial reduction of the emissivity in the infrared along with its increase in the visible. We take into account disorder of the PC elements in their sizes and positions, and get quantitative agreement between the numerical and experimental results. We analyze the influence of known temperature-resistant refr…
Perovskite oxynitrides are a promising class of material for photocatalytic water-splitting due to their small band gaps and suitably aligned band edges. Recently, epitaxially strained oxynitrides started to attract interest due to the possibility to engineer the anion order and ferroelectric distortions. However, contrary to oxides there have been no studies on the band-gap evolution in oxynitrides with epitaxial strain. Here, we investigate, using density functional theory calculations, the influence of epitaxial strain on the band gap of two different oxynitrides and compare our results wit…
Hybrid halide perovskites exhibit nearly 20% power conversion efficiency, but the origin of their high efficiency is still unknown. Here, we compute the shift current, a dominant mechanism of bulk photovoltaic (PV) effect for ferroelectric photovoltaics, in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$ from first principles. We find that these materials give approximately three times larger shift current PV response to near-IR and visible light than the prototypical ferroelectric photovoltaic BiFeO$_3$. The molecular orientations of CH$_3$NH$_3^{+}$ can strongly affect the correspond…
BaTiO3 is typically a strong n-type material with tuneable optoelectronic properties via doping and controlling the synthesis conditions. It has a wide band gap that can only harness the ultraviolet region of the solar spectrum. Despite significant progress, achieving visible-light absorbing BTO with tuneable carrier concentration has been challenging, a crucial requirement for many applications. In this work, a p-type BTO with visible-light absorption is realized via iridium doping. Detailed analysis using advanced spectroscopy tools and computational electronic structure analysis is used to …

All the obtained samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements were probed ferroelectric- paraelectric first-order phase transition (TC) for all samples. Addition of …
Multifunctional oxides are promising materials because of their fundamental physical properties as well as their potential in applications1. Among these materials, multiferroics exhibiting ferroelectricity and magnetism are good candidates for spin electronic applications using the magnetoelectric effect, which couples magnetism and ferroelecticity. Furthermore, because ferroelectrics are insulators with a reasonable bandgap, photons can efficiently interact with electrons leading to photoconduction or photovoltaic effects. However, until now, coupling of light with mechanical degrees of freed…
Coupling different physical properties is a fascinating subject of physics. Already well-known are the multiferroics which show properties of ferroelectrics and magnets. But ferroelectricity by itself also entails the bulk photovoltaic effect, a light-matter interaction which generates dc currents. Here we propose a magnetic photogalvanic effect that couples the magnetism to the light-matter interaction. This phenomenon emerges from the $\mathbf{k}$ to $\mathbf{-k}$ symmetry-breaking in the band structure and does not require a static polarization. It is distinct from other known bulk photovol…

The connection between noncentrosymmetric materials' structure, electronic structure, and bulk photovoltaic performance remains not well understood. In particular, it is still unclear which photovoltaic (PV) mechanism(s) are relevant for the recently demonstrated visible-light ferroelectric photovoltaic (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$. In this paper, we study the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) of (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$ and KNbO$_{3}$ by calculating the shift current from first principles. The effects of structural phase, lattice distortion, oxygen vacancies, cation arrangement, composition, and strain…
Generalized Brewster angle (GBA) is the incidence angle at which polarization by reflection for p- and s-polarized light takes place. Realizing s-polarization Brewster effect requires a material with magnetic response which is challenging at optical frequencies since the magnetic response of materials at these frequencies is extremely weak. Here, we experimentally realize GBA effect in the visible using a thin-film absorber system consisting of a dielectric film on an absorbing substrate. Polarization by reflection is realized for both p- and s- polarized light at different angles of incidence…
