The connection between noncentrosymmetric materials' structure, electronic structure, and bulk photovoltaic performance remains not well understood. In particular, it is still unclear which photovoltaic (PV) mechanism(s) are relevant for the recently demonstrated visible-light ferroelectric photovoltaic (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$. In this paper, we study the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) of (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$ and KNbO$_{3}$ by calculating the shift current from first principles. The effects of structural phase, lattice distortion, oxygen vacancies, cation arrangement, composition, and strain on BPVE are systematically studied. We find that (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{3-δ}$ has a comparable BPVE with that of the broadly explored BiFeO$_{3}$, but for a much lower photon energy. In particular, the Glass coefficient of (K,Ba)(Ni,Nb)O$_{5}$ in a simply layered structure can be as large as 12 times that of BiFeO$_{3}$. Furthermore, the nature of the wavefunctions dictates the eventual shift current yield, which can be significantly affected and engineered by changing the O vacancy location, cation arrangement, and strain. This is not only helpful for understanding other PV mechanisms that relate to the motion of the photocurrent carriers, but also provides guidelines for the design and optimization of PV converters.
The bulk photovoltaic effect is a long-known but poorly understood phenomenon. Recently, however, the multiferroic bismuth ferrite has been observed to produce strong photovoltaic response to visible light, suggesting that the effect has been underexploited as well. Here we present three polar oxides in the LiNbO$_3$ structure that we predict to have band gaps in the 1-2 eV range and very high bulk photovoltaic response: PbNiO$_3$, Mg$_{1/2}$Zn$_{1/2}$PbO$_3$, and LiBiO$_3$. All three have band gaps determined by cations with $d^{10}s^0$ electronic configurations, leading to conduction bands c…
Bulk photovoltaic (BPVE) effect in crystals lacking inversion symmetry offers great potential for optoelectronic applications due to its unique properties such as above bandgap photovoltage and switchable photocurrent. Because of their large spontaneous polarizations, ferroelectric materials are ideal platforms for studying BPVE. However, identifying the origin of experimentally observed photovoltaic response is often challenging due to the entanglement between bulk and interface effects, leading to much debate in the field. This issue is particularly pronounced in vertical heterostructures, w…
The bulk photovoltaic effect that is intimately associated with crystalline symmetry has been extensively studied in various nonmagnetic materials, especially ferroelectrics with a switchable electric polarization. In order to further engineer the symmetry, one could resort to spin-polarized systems possessing an extra magnetic degree of freedom. Here, we investigate the bulk photovoltaic effect in two-dimensional magnetic sliding ferroelectric (MSFE) systems, illustrated in VSe2, FeCl2, and CrI3 bilayers. The transition metal elements in these systems exhibit intrinsic spin polarization, and …
We calculate the shift current response, which has been identified as the dominant mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect, for the polar compounds LiAsS$_\text{2}$, LiAsSe$_\text{2}$, and NaAsSe$_\text{2}$. We find that the magnitudes of the photovoltaic responses in the visible range for these compounds exceed the maximum response obtained for BiFeO$_\text{3}$ by 10 - 20 times. We correlate the high shift current response with the existence of $p$ states at both the valence and conduction band edges, as well as the dispersion of these bands, while also showing that high polarization is no…
We compute the shift current bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) in bulk BaTiO$_3$ and two-dimensional monochalcogenide SnSe considering quasi-particle corrections and exciton effects. We explore changes in shift current peak position and magnitude reduction due to band renormalization. For BaTiO$_3$, we demonstrate that shift current is reduced near the band edge due to exciton effects. Comparison of these results with experiments on BaTiO$_3$ indicate that mechanisms other than shift current may be contributing to BPVE. Additionally, we reveal that the shift current near the band gap shows only …
The correlation between the shift current mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) and the structural and electronic properties of ferroelectric perovskite oxides is not well understood. Here, we study and engineer the shift current photovoltaic effect using a visible-light-absorbing ferroelectric Pb(Ni$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$)O$_{3-x}$ solid solution from first principles. We show that the covalent orbital character dicates the direction, magnitude, and onset energy of shift current in a predictable fashion. In particular, we find that the shift current response can be enhanced via electrost…
Hybrid halide perovskites exhibit nearly 20% power conversion efficiency, but the origin of their high efficiency is still unknown. Here, we compute the shift current, a dominant mechanism of bulk photovoltaic (PV) effect for ferroelectric photovoltaics, in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$ from first principles. We find that these materials give approximately three times larger shift current PV response to near-IR and visible light than the prototypical ferroelectric photovoltaic BiFeO$_3$. The molecular orientations of CH$_3$NH$_3^{+}$ can strongly affect the correspond…
Organic semiconductors possess an intrinsic energetic disorder characteristic, which holds an exceptionally important role for understanding organic photovoltaic (OPV) operation and future optimization. We performed illumination intensity dependence of capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements in PIDTDTQx:PC70BM based organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics in working conditions. Energetic disorder profiles for the photo-active layer, PIDTDTQx:PC70BM, changed significantly when different interfaces were involved. The effects of energetic disorder that could be reflected from C-V profiles …
Recently, it has been shown how shift and ballistic currents in piezoelectric sillenite crystals Bi$_{12}$GeO$_{20}$ and Bi$_{12}$SiO$_{20}$ can be separated experimentally under the assumption that the shift component of the circular current is small. However, it has been claimed that the shift and ballistic currents cannot be quantified by this method, due to the magneto-photovoltaic effect caused either by the change of the crystal's spatial symmetry in the magnetic field or by the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. Presently, we report observations of photovoltaic currents in Bi$_{12}$SiO…
Optimal materials to induce bulk photovoltaic effects should lack inversion symmetry and have an optical gap matching the energies of visible radiation. Ferroelectric perovskite oxides such as BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ exhibit substantial polarization and stability, but have the disadvantage of excessively large band gaps. We use both density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory calculations to design a new class of Mott multiferroics--double perovskite oxides $A_2$VFeO$_6$ ($A$=Ba, Pb, etc). While neither perovskite $A$VO$_3$ nor $A$FeO$_3$ is ferroelectric, in the double perovskit…
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPE) leads to the generation of a photocurrent from an asymmetric material. Despite drawing much attention due to its ability to generate photovoltages above the band gap ($E_g$), it is considered a weak effect due to the low generated photocurrents. Here, we show that a remarkably high photoresponse can be achieved by exploiting the BPE in simple planar BaTiO$_3$ (BTO) films, solely by tuning their fundamental ferroelectric properties via strain and growth orientation induced by epitaxial growth on different substrates. We find a non-monotonic dependence of the r…
Structurally chiral materials hosting multifold fermions with large topological number have attracted considerable attention because of their naturally long surface Fermi arcs and bulk quantized circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). Multifold fermions only appear in metallic states, and therefore, most studies so far have only focused on the semimetals in compounds with chiral crystal structures. In this work, we show that the structurally chiral topological trivial insulators are also exotic states, which is interesting from the application point of view, owing to their natural advantage to h…
The bulk photovoltaic effect exhibited by the non-centrosymmetric system gains research interest due to the observed large open-circuit voltage. The ferroelectric systems exhibiting anomalous photovoltaic effect are mostly crystallized with multiphase coexistence. Hence, the computational difficulty in building a multi-phase system restricts the detailed photovoltaic studies through phenomenological and shift current theory. In this work, ferroelectric Ba$_{1- x}$(Bi$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)$_x$TiO$_3$ (BBKT) oxide is designed to crystallize in single-phase tetragonal symmetry with improved polarizat…
Recently, Lee \textit{et. al.} [Nano Lett. \textbf{21}, 4305 (2021)] newly synthesized monochalcogenide GeSe in a polar phase, referred to as $γ$-phase. Motivated by this work, we study shift current of $γ$-GeSe and its tunability via an in-plane uniaxial strain. Using first-principles calculations, we uncover the electronic structure of the strained $γ$-GeSe systems. We then calculate frequency-dependent shift current conductivities at various strains. The tunability is demonstrated to enhance the shift current up to $\sim$ 20 $μ$A/V$^2$. Moreover, the direction of shift current can be invert…
Spontaneous polarization and bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) are two concomitant physical properties in ferroelectric materials. The flipping of ferroelectric order usually accompanies with the switching of BPVE as both of them are reversed under the inversion symmetry. In this study, we report the distinctive BPVE characters in two-dimensional (2D) interlayer sliding ferroelectric materials featuring unswitchable in-plane BPVE (light-induced photocurrent in the xy plane) and switchable out-of-plane BPVE (light-induced polarization along the z-direction). Symmetry analysis within abstract bila…
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a second-order optical process in noncentrosymmetric materials that converts the light into DC currents. BPVE is classified into shift current and injection current according to the generation mechanisms, whose dependence on the polarization of light is sensitive to the spatial and time-reversal symmetry of materials. In this work, we present a comprehensive study on the BPVE response of $EuSn_2As_2$ with different magnetic structures through symmetry analysis and first-principles calculation. We demonstrate that the interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) $Eu…
We study the Fermi surface contribution to the nonlinear DC photocurrent at quadratic order in a spatially uniform optical field in the ultra-clean limit. In addition to shift and injection current, we find that polarized light incident on a metallic system generates an intrinsic contribution to the bulk photovoltaic effect deriving from photoinduced electronic transitions on the Fermi surface. In {velocity} gauge, this contribution originates in both the coherent band off-diagonal and diagonal parts of the density matrix, describing respectively, the coherent wave function evolution and the c…

Halide perovskites have outstanding photovoltaic properties which have been optimized through interfacial engineering. However, as these materials approach the limits imposed by the physics of semiconductor junctions, it is urgent to explore alternatives, such as the bulk photovoltaic effect, whose physical origin is different and not bound by the same limits. In this context, we focus on the flexo-photovoltaic effect, a type of bulk photovoltaic effect that was recently observed in oxides under strain gradients. We have measured the flexo-photovoltaic effect of MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3 crystals und…

We investigate the shift current bulk photovoltaic response of materials close to a band inversion topological phase transition. We find that the bulk photocurrent reverses direction across the band inversion transition, and that its magnitude is enhanced in the vicinity of the phase transition. These results are demonstrated with first principles DFT calculations of BiTeI and CsPbI$_3$ under hydrostatic pressure, and explained with an analytical model, suggesting that this phenomenon remains robust across disparate material systems.
Spin current generators are critical components for spintronics-based information processing. In this work, we theoretically and computationally investigate the bulk spin photovoltaic (BSPV) effect for creating DC spin current under light illumination. The only requirement for BPSV is inversion symmetry breaking, thus it applies to a broad range of materials and can be readily integrated with existing semiconductor technologies. The BSPV effect is a cousin of the bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect, whereby a DC charge current is generated under light. Thanks to the different selection rules on spi…
Following the recent discovery of a bulk photovoltaic effect in the Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.68Ti0.32]O3 crystal, we report here more than one order of magnitude improvement of photovoltaicity as well as its poling dependence in the related composition of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate noted Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.30]O3. Photocurrent measurements versus light intensity reveal a fascinating hysteretic charge carriers dynamics clearly demonstrating charge generation, trapping and release processes.
Bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect, a second order nonlinear process that generates static current under light irradiation, requires centrosymmetric broken systems as its application platform. In order to realize measurable BPV photocurrent in spatially centrosymmetric materials, various schemes such as chemical doping, structural deformation, or electric bias have been developed. In the current work, we suggest that magnetic proximity effect via van der Waals interfacial interaction, a contact-free strategy, also breaks the centrosymmetry and generate large BPV photocurrents. Using the Bi2Te3 qui…
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a phenomenon which creates a net electrical current from sunlight in a polar noncentrosymmetric material possessing a moderate band gap. This effect is being explored as an alternative to traditional pn-junction solar cells to convert solar energy into electricity. This paper assesses the possibility that hydrogenated Zintl-phase compounds consisting only of metal, metalloid, and hydrogen atoms, may be able to provide a BPVE response. Towards this end, the magnitude of the BPVE shift current is calculated for each of the compounds AeTrTtH (Ae = Ca, Sr, an…
Ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties of BiFeO3/LaFeO3 superlattices grown by pulsed laser deposition have been investigated being the bilayer thickness). For a high concentration of BiFeO3 a ferroelectric state is observed simultaneously with a switchable photovoltaic response. In contrast for certain concentration of LaFeO3 a non-switchable photovoltaic effect is evidenced. Such modulation of the PV response in the superlattices is attributed to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition which is controlled with the increase of x. Remarkably, concomitant to this change of PV mech…
Photovoltaic (PV) response of epitaxial BiFe0.95Mn0.05O3 thin film grown by pulsed laser deposition has been investigated on a broad range of temperature. Wavelength dependent photovoltaic effect shows the contribution of in gap level states most likely connected to the manganese doping on the B-site of the perovskite unit cells and presence of defects (Bi and O vacancies). The temperature dependent response of the PV response rules out electromigration and/or Schottky barriers as dominant mechanisms. This is corroborated with the observed switchable photovoltaic effect that can be explained e…
Topological insulators (TIs) form a new class of materials with insulating bulk and surface conduction ensured by topologically protected surface states (TPSS). We investigate the impact of the helicity of a normally incident laser beam on the photovoltaic effect in the TI Bi2Se3. The observation of a helicity dependent photovoltaic effect for normally incident light indicates the presence of out-of-plane spin components for some TPSSs due to the hexagonal warping. In addition, fluctuations in the electrostatic potential at the surface locally break the rotational symmetry of the film allowing…
The bulk photovoltaic effect in noncentrosymmetric materials is an intriguing physical phenomenon that holds potential for high-efficiency energy harvesting. Here, we study the shift current bulk photovoltaic effect in the transition metal dichalcogenide MoS$_2$. We present a simple automated method to guide materials design and use it to uncover a distortion to monolayer $2H$-MoS$_2$ that dramatically enhances the integrated shift current. Using this distortion, we show that overlap in the Brillouin zone of the distributions of the shift vector (a quantity measuring the net displacement in re…

We investigate a physical divergence of the third order polarization susceptibility representing a photoinduced current in biased crystalline insulators. This current grows quadratically with illumination time in the absence of momentum relaxation and saturation; we refer to it as the \textit{jerk current}. Two contributions to the current are identified. The first is a hydrodynamic acceleration of optically injected carriers by the static electric field, and the second is the change in the carrier injection rate in the presence of the static electric field. The jerk current can have a compone…
Giant photovoltaic effect due to bulk photovoltaic effect observed in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films has triggered a renewed interest on photoferroelectric materials for photovoltaic applications. Tremendous advance has been done to improve power conversion efficiency (up to up to 8.1%) in photoferroelectrics via absorption increase using narrow bandgap ferroelectrics. Other strategies, as it is the more efficient use of ferroelectric internal electric field, are ongoing. Moreover, as a by-product, several progress have been also achieved on photostriction that is the photo-induced deformation…
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) occurs in solids with broken inversion symmetry and refers to DC current generation due to uniform illumination, without the need of heterostructures or interfaces, a feature that is distinct from the traditional photovoltaic effect. Its existence has been demonstrated almost 50 years ago, but predictive theories only appeared in the last ten years, allowing for the identification of different mechanisms and the determination of their relative importance in real materials. It is now generally accepted that there is an intrinsic mechanism that is insensitive …
The implementation of a wide range of novel concepts for next-generation high-efficiency solar cells is based on nanostructures with configuration-tunable optoelectronic properties. On the other hand, effective nano-optical light-trapping concepts enable the use of ultra-thin absorber architectures. In both cases, the local density of electronic and optical states deviates strongly from that in a homogeneous bulk material. At the same time, non-local and coherent phenomena like tunneling or ballistic transport become increasingly relevant. As a consequence, the semi-classical, diffusive bulk p…
Semi-transparent photovoltaic devices for building integrated applications have the potential to provide simultaneous power generation and natural light penetration. CuIn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$Se$_2$ (CIGS) has been established as a mature technology for thin-film photovoltaics, however, its potential for Semi-Transparent Photovoltaics (STPV) is yet to be explored. In this paper, we present its carrier transport physics explaining the trend seen in recently published experiments. STPV requires deposition of films of only a few hundred nanometers to make them transparent and manifests several unique pro…
