We introduce and analyze a class of Galerkin-collocation discretization schemes in time for the wave equation. Its conceptual basis is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method for the time discretization and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs provided by the latter in terms of less complex linear algebraic systems. Continuously differentiable in time discrete solutions are obtained by the application of a special quadrature rule involving derivatives. Optimal order error estimates are proved for fully discrete approximations based on the Galerkin-collocation approach. Further, the concept of Galerkin-collocation approximation is extended to twice continuously differentiable in time discrete solutions. A direct connection between the two families by a computationally cheap post-processing is presented. The error estimates are illustrated by numerical experiments.
This paper is concerned with the numerical approximation of the Dirichlet initial-boundary-value problem of nonlinear pseudo-parabolic equations with spectral methods. Error estimates for the semidiscrete Galerkin and collocation schemes based on Jacobi polynomials are derived.
We propose and study numerically the implicit approximation in time of the Navier-Stokes equations by a Galerkin-collocation method in time combined with inf-sup stable finite element methods in space. The conceptual basis of the Galerkin-collocation approach is the establishment of a direct connection between the Galerkin method and the classical collocation methods, with the perspective of achieving the accuracy of the former with reduced computational costs in terms of less complex algebraic systems of the latter. Regularity of higher order in time of the discrete solution is ensured furthe…
In this paper, we present and study $C^1$ Petrov-Galerkin and Gauss collocation methods with arbitrary polynomial degree $k$ ($\ge 3$) for one-dimensional elliptic equations. We prove that, the solution and its derivative approximations converge with rate $2k-2$ at all grid points; and the solution approximation is superconvergent at all interior roots of a special Jacobi polynomial of degree $k+1$ in each element, the first-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at all interior $k-2$ Lobatto points, and the second-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at $k-1$ Gauss poi…
In this work, we propose and investigate stable high-order collocation-type discretisations of the discontinuous Galerkin method on equidistant and scattered collocation points. We do so by incorporating the concept of discrete least squares into the discontinuous Galerkin framework. Discrete least squares approximations allow us to construct stable and high-order accurate approximations on arbitrary collocation points, while discrete least squares quadrature rules allow us their stable and exact numerical integration. Both methods are computed efficiently by using bases of discrete orthogonal…
Collocation boundary element methods for integral equations are easier to implement than Galerkin methods because the elements of the discretization matrix are given by lower-dimensional integrals. For that same reason, the matrix assembly also requires fewer computations. However, collocation methods typically yield slower convergence rates and less robustness, compared to Galerkin methods. We explore the extent to which oversampled collocation can improve both robustness and convergence rates. We show that in some cases convergence rates can actually be higher than the corresponding Galerkin…
This paper investigate on numerical analysis on modified Single-layer approach to exterior Dirichlet problem of Laplace equation. We complete the convergence and error analysis of Petrov-Galerkin and Galerkin-Collocation methods with trigonometric basis for the induced modified Symm's integral equation of the first kind on analytic boundary. Besides, utilizing the composite trapezial quadrature formula and trigonometric interpolation to handle the singularity in modified logarithmic kernel, we establish the numerical procedure for implementation. On these numerical examples, we compare the eff…
This paper focuses on the spectral properties of the mass and stiffness matrices for acoustic wave problems discretized with Isogeometric analysis (IGA) collocation methods in space and Newmark methods in time. Extensive numerical results are reported for the eigenvalues and condition numbers of the acoustic mass and stiffness matrices in the reference square domain with Dirichlet, Neumann and absorbing boundary conditions, varying the polynomial degree $p$, mesh size $h$, regularity $k$, of the IGA discretization and the time step $Δt$ and parameter $β$ of the Newmark method. Results on the s…
Convergence of an adaptive collocation method for the stationary parametric diffusion equation with finite-dimensional affine coefficient is shown. The adaptive algorithm relies on a recently introduced residual-based reliable a posteriori error estimator. For the convergence proof, a strategy recently used for a stochastic Galerkin method with an hierarchical error estimator is transferred to the collocation setting. Extensions to other variants of adaptive collocation methods (including the classical one proposed in the paper "Dimension-adaptive tensor-product quadratuture" Computing (2003) …
In recent work (Maierhofer & Huybrechs, 2022, Adv. Comput. Math.), the authors showed that least-squares oversampling can improve the convergence properties of collocation methods for boundary integral equations involving operators of certain pseudo-differential form. The underlying principle is that the discrete method approximates a Bubnov$-$Galerkin method in a suitable sense. In the present work, we extend this analysis to the case when the integral operator is perturbed by a compact operator $\mathcal{K}$ which is continuous as a map on Sobolev spaces on the boundary, $\mathcal{K}:H^{p}\r…
In this work, we study the reproducing kernel (RK) collocation method for the peridynamic Navier equation. We first apply a linear RK approximation on both displacements and dilatation, then back-substitute dilatation, and solve the peridynamic Navier equation in a pure displacement form. The RK collocation scheme converges to the nonlocal limit and also to the local limit as nonlocal interactions vanish. The stability is shown by comparing the collocation scheme with the standard Galerkin scheme using Fourier analysis. We then apply the RK collocation to the quasi-discrete peridynamic Navier …
We consider a family of variational time discretizations that are generalizations of discontinuous Galerkin (dG) and continuous Galerkin-Petrov (cGP) methods. The family is characterized by two parameters. One describes the polynomial ansatz order while the other one is associated with the global smoothness that is ensured by higher order collocation conditions at both ends of the subintervals. The presented methods provide the same stability properties as dG or cGP. Provided that suitable quadrature rules of Hermite type for evaluating the integrals in the variational conditions are used, the…
Intrusive Uncertainty Quantification methods such as stochastic Galerkin are gaining popularity, whereas the classical stochastic Galerkin approach is not ensured to preserve hyperbolicity of the underlying hyperbolic system. We apply a modification of this method that uses a slope limiter to retain admissible solutions of the system, while providing high-order approximations in the physical and stochastic space. This is done using a spatial discontinuous Galerkin scheme and a Multi-Element stochastic Galerkin ansatz in the random space. We analyze the convergence of the resulting scheme and a…
This paper considers the approximation of partial differential equations with a point collocation framework based on high-order local maximum-entropy schemes (HOLMES). In this approach, smooth basis functions are computed through an optimization procedure and the strong form of the problem is directly imposed at the collocation points, reducing significantly the computational times with respect to the Galerkin formulation. Furthermore, such a method is truly meshless, since no background integration grids are necessary. The validity of the proposed methodology is verified with supportive numer…
The discrete ordinates discontinuous Galerkin ($S_N$-DG) method is a well-established and practical approach for solving the radiative transport equation. In this paper, we study a low-memory variation of the upwind $S_N$-DG method. The proposed method uses a smaller finite element space that is constructed by coupling spatial unknowns across collocation angles, thereby yielding an approximation with fewer degrees of freedom than the standard method. Like the original $S_N$-DG method, the low memory variation still preserves the asymptotic diffusion limit and maintains the characteristic struc…
Neural field models are nonlinear integro-differential equations for the evolution of neuronal activity, and they are a prototypical large-scale, coarse-grained neuronal model in continuum cortices. Neural fields are often simulated heuristically and, in spite of their popularity in mathematical neuroscience, their numerical analysis is not yet fully established. We introduce generic projection methods for neural fields, and derive a-priori error bounds for these schemes. We extend an existing framework for stationary integral equations to the time-dependent case, which is relevant for neurosc…

We propose a linearized semi-implicit and decoupled finite element method for the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations with variable density. Our method is fully discrete and shown to be unconditionally stable. The velocity equation is solved by an H1-conforming finite element method, and an upwind discontinuous Galerkin finite element method with post-processed velocity is adopted for the density equation. The proposed method is proved to be convergent in approximating reasonably smooth solutions in three-dimensional convex polyhedral domains.
We present a novel postprocessing technique for a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of time-dependent Maxwell's equations that we couple with an explicit Runge-Kutta time-marching scheme. The postprocessed electromagnetic field converges one order faster than the unprocessed solution in the H(curl)-norm. The proposed approach is local, in the sense that the enhanced solution is computed independently in each cell of the computational mesh, and at each time step of interest. As a result, it is inexpensive to compute, especially if the region of interest is localized, either in time or …
The paper considers a class of parametric elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs), where the coefficients and the right-hand side function depend on infinitely many (uncertain) parameters. We introduce a two-level a posteriori estimator to control the energy error in multilevel stochastic Galerkin approximations for this class of PDE problems. We prove that the two-level estimator always provides a lower bound for the unknown approximation error, while the upper bound is equivalent to a saturation assumption. We propose and empirically compare three adaptive algorithms, where the struct…
Fully well-balanced entropy controlled discontinuous Galerkin spectral element method for shallow water flows: global flux quadrature and cell entropy correction
We consider a linear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with a generic uniformly bounded parametric coefficient. The solution to this PDE problem is approximated in the framework of stochastic Galerkin finite element methods. We perform a posteriori error analysis of Galerkin approximations and derive a reliable and efficient estimate for the energy error in these approximations. Practical versions of this error estimate are discussed and tested numerically for a model problem with non-affine parametric representation of the coefficient. Furthermore, we use the error reduction indica…
We perform a posteriori error analysis in the supremum norm for the quadratic discontinuous Galerkin method for the elliptic obstacle problem. We define two discrete sets (motivated by Gaddam, Gudi and Kamana [1]), one set having integral constraints and other one with the nodal constraints at the quadrature points, and discuss the pointwise reliability and efficiency of the proposed a posteriori error estimator. In the analysis, we employ a linear averaging function to transfer DG finite element space to standard conforming finite element space and exploit the sharp bounds on the Green's func…
We consider fully discrete time-space approximations of abstract linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) consisting of an $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time stepping scheme in conjunction with standard (conforming) Galerkin discretizations in space. We derive abstract computable a posteriori error bounds resulting, for instance, in concrete bounds in $L_{\infty}(I;L_2(Ω))$- and $L_{2}(I;H^{1}(Ω))$-type norms when $I$ is the temporal and $Ω$ the spatial domain for the PDE. We base our methodology for the analysis on a novel space-time reconstruction approach. Our appro…
We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains. For purely diffusion problems, we already proved that this scheme converges under minimal regularity assumptions [A. Abdulle and G.Rosilho de Souza, ESAIM: M2AN, 53(4):1269--1303, 2019]. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for the automatic identification of the local elliptic problems' subdomains employing a flux reconstruction strategy…
