We examine the dynamics of skyrmions in systems with a region of strong pinning coexisting with a pin free region, where the equilibrium state has a uniform skyrmion density. Under an applied drive, skyrmions accumulate in the pin free region along the edge of the pinned region due to the skyrmion Hall effect. As the drive increases, a series of dynamical structural transitions occur in the flowing skyrmion lattice similar to those observed in the compression dynamics of crystals. These transitions correspond to reductions in the number of flowing rows of skyrmions due to the collective motion of the skyrmions into the pinned region, and they are accompanied by a series of steps in the velocity force curves. When the number of pinning sites is sufficiently large, a drive induced pinning effect can occur when the skyrmion Hall effect forces all of the skyrmions to enter the strongly pinned region. This reentrant pinning effect becomes more pronounced for increasing intrinsic skyrmion Hall angle.
High precision skyrmion pinning by an intentionally created magnetic structure is important in skyrmion manipulation. Here, we consider skyrmion pinning by various types of disks. Among other findings, we clarify that, in terms of pinning position and pinning potential landscape, one needs to distinguish thin-wall skyrmions from thick-wall skyrmions because of fundamental differences. A skyrmion wall prefers areas with a weaker exchange stiffness, a larger DMI constant, or a smaller magnetic anisotropy while a skyrmion core experiences only the magnetic anisotropy, not exchange stiffness and D…
Recently spin textures called skyrmions have been discovered in certain chiral magnetic materials without spatial inversion symmetry, and have attracted enormous attention due to their promising application in spintronics since only a low applied current is necessary to drive their motion. When a conduction electron moves around the skyrmion, its spin is fully polarized by the spin texture and acquires a quantized phase; thus, the skyrmion yields an emergent electrodynamics that in turn determines skyrmion motion and gives rise to a finite Hall angle. While Skyrmions behave as particles, no pa…
An understanding of the pinning of magnetic skyrmions to defects is crucial for the development of future spintronic applications. While pinning is desirable for a precise positioning of magnetic skyrmions it is detrimental when they are to be moved through a material. We use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the interaction between atomic scale defects and magnetic skyrmions that are only a few nanometers in diameter. The studied pinning centers range from single atom inlayer defects and adatoms to clusters adsorbed on the surface of our model system. We find very different pinning stren…
A key issue for skyrmion dynamics and devices are pinning effects present in real systems. While posing a challenge for the realization of conventional skyrmionics devices, exploiting pinning effects can enable non-conventional computing approaches if the details of the pinning in real samples are quantified and understood. We demonstrate that using thermal skyrmion dynamics, we can characterize the pinning of a sample and we ascertain the spatially resolved energy landscape. To understand the mechanism of the pinning, we probe the strong skyrmion size and shape dependence of the pinning. Magn…
While in the lowest Landau level the electron-electron interaction leads to the formation of the Wigner crystal, in higher Landau levels a solid phase with multiple electrons in a lattice site of crystal was predicted, which was called the bubble phase. Reentrant integer quantum Hall states are believed to be the insulating bubble phase pinned by disorder. We carry out nonlinear transport measurements on the reentrant states and study the de-pinning of the bubble phase, which is complementary to previous microwave measurements and provides unique information. In this study, conductivity is dir…
Using particle-based simulations, we examine the collective dynamics of skyrmions interacting with periodic pinning arrays, focusing on the impact of the Magnus force on the sliding phases. As a function of increasing pinning strength, we find a series of distinct dynamical phases, including an interstitial flow phase, a moving disordered state, a moving crystal, and a segregated cluster state. The transitions between these states produce signatures in the skyrmion lattice structure, the skyrmion Hall angle, the velocity fluctuation distributions, and the velocity-force curves. The moving clus…
Resting on multi-scale modelling simulations, we explore dynamical aspects characterizing skyrmions driven by spin-transfer-torque towards repulsive and pinning 3d and 4d single atomic defects embedded in a Pd layer deposited on the Fe/Ir(111) surface. The latter is known to host sub-10 nm skyrmions which are of great interest in information technology. The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is parametrized with magnetic exchange interactions extracted from first-principles. Depending on the nature of the defect and the magnitude of the applied magnetic field, the skyrmion deforms by either shri…
We study theoretically the dynamics of the spin textures, i.e., Skyrmion crystal (SkX) and spiral structure (SS), in two-dimensional helical magnets under external current. By numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, it is found that (i) the critical current density of the motion is much lower for SkX compared with SS in agreement with the recent experiment, (ii) there is no intrinsic pinning effect for SkX and the deformation of the internal structure of Skyrmion reduces the pinning effect dramatically, (iii) the Bragg intensity of SkX shows strong time-dependence as can be o…
We study the Thiele equation for current-induced motion in a skyrmion lattice through two soluble models of the pinning potential. Comprised by a Magnus term, a dissipative term and a pinning force, Thiele's equation resembles Newton's law but in virtue of the topological character of the first two, it differs significantly from Newtonian mechanics and because the Magnus force is dominant, unlike its mechanical counterpart, the Coriolis force, skyrmion trajectories do not necessarily have mechanical counterparts. This is important if we are to understand skykrmion dynamics and tap into its pot…
A theoretical study on the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmion is indispensable for revealing the underlying physics and understanding the numerical and experimental observations. In this work, we present a reliable theoretical treatment of the spin current induced motion of an AFM skyrmion in the absence and presence of pinning defect. For an ideal AFM system free of defect, the skyrmion motion velocity as a function of the intrinsic parameters can be derived, based on the concept that the skyrmion profile agrees well with the 360 domain wall formula, leading to an explicit descri…
Using numerical simulations, we examine the nonlinear dynamics of skyrmions driven over random pinning. For weak pinning, the skyrmions depin elastically, retaining sixfold ordering; however, at the onset of motion there is a dip in the magnitude of the structure factor peaks due to a decrease in positional ordering, indicating that the depinning transition can be detected using the structure factor even within the elastic depinning regime. At higher drives the moving skyrmion lattice regains full ordering. For increasing pinning strength, we find a transition from elastic to plastic depinning…
Skyrmions are nanoscale magnetic structures with features promising for future low-power memory or logic devices. In this work, we demonstrate novel scanning techniques based on nitrogen vacancy center magnetometry that simultaneously probe both the magnetic dynamics and structure of room temperature skyrmion bubbles in a thin film system Ta/CoFeB/MgO. We confirm the handedness of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in this material and extract the helicity angle of the skyrmion bubbles. Our measurements also show that the skyrmion bubbles in this material change size in discrete steps, depe…
We have imaged Néel skyrmion bubbles in perpendicularly magnetised polycrystalline multilayers patterned into 1 μm diameter dots, using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. The skyrmion bubbles can be nucleated by the application of an external magnetic field and are stable at zero field with a diameter of 260 nm. Applying an out of plane field that opposes the magnetisation of the skyrmion bubble core moment applies pressure to the bubble and gradually compresses it to a diameter of approximately 100 nm. On removing the field the skyrmion bubble returns to its original diameter via a hyste…
In the cubic chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si a metastable state comprising of topologically nontrivial spin whirls, so-called skyrmions, may be preserved down to low temperatures by means of field cooling the sample. This metastable skyrmion state is energetically separated from the topologically trivial ground state by a considerable potential barrier, a phenomenon also referred to as topological protection. Using magnetic force microscopy on the surface of a bulk crystal, we show that certain positions are preferentially and reproducibly decorated with metastable skyrmions, indicating tha…
Topological spin textures can serve as non-volatile information carriers. Here we study the current-induced dynamics of an isolated magnetic skyrmion on a nanoscale square-grid pinning pattern formed by orthogonal defect lines with reduced magnetic anisotropy. The skyrmion on the square grid can be pixelated with a quantized size of the grid. We demonstrate that the position, size, and shape of skyrmion on the square grid are electrically configurable. The skyrmion center is quantized to be on the grid and the skyrmion may show a hopping motion instead of a continuous motion. We find that the …

Current-driven skyrmion motion in random granular films is investigated with interesting findings. For a given current, there exists a critical disorder strength below which its transverse motion could either be boosted below a critical damping or be hindered above the critical damping, resulting in current and disorder dependences of skyrmion Hall angle. The boosting comes mainly from the random force that is opposite to the driving force (current). The critical damping depends on the current density and disorder strength. However, the longitudinal motion of a skyrmion is always hindered by t…
Spin torque nano-oscillator has been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally in recent decades due to its potential applications in future microwave communication technology and neuromorphic computing. In this work, we present a skyrmion-based spin torque nano-oscillator driven by a spatially uniform direct current, where the skyrmion is confined by two pinning sites. Different from other skyrmion-based oscillators that arise from the circular motion or the breathing mode of a skyrmion, the steady-state oscillatory motions are produced by the periodic deformation of an elonga…
A theoretical study of the current-driven dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in disordered perpendicularly-magnetized ultrathin films is presented. The disorder is simulated as a granular structure in which the local anisotropy varies randomly from grain to grain. The skyrmion velocity is computed for different disorder parameters and ensembles. Similar behavior is seen for spin-torques due to in-plane currents and the spin Hall effect, where a pinning regime can be identified at low currents with a transition towards the disorder-free case at higher currents, similar to domain wall motion in diso…
We report on the effect of the lateral confinement and a perpendicular magnetic field on isolated room-temperature magnetic skyrmions in sputtered Pt/Co/MgO nanotracks and nanodots. We show that the skyrmions size can be easily tuned by playing on the lateral dimensions of the nanostructures and by using external magnetic field amplitudes of a few mT, which allow to reach sub-100 nm diameters. Our XMCD-PEEM observations also highlight the important role of the pinning on the skyrmions size and stability under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the effect of l…
Diameter-modulated nanowires offer an important paradigm to design the magnetization response of 3D magnetic nanostructures by engineering the domain wall pinning. With the aim to understand its nature and to control the process, we analyze the magnetization response in FeCo modulated polycrystalline two-segment nanowires varying the minor diameter. Our modelling indicates a very complex behavior with a strong dependence on the disorder distribution and an important role of topologically non-trivial magnetization structures. We demonstrate that modulated nanowires with a small diameter differe…
Magnetic skyrmions are stable nanosized spin structures that can be displaced at low electrical current densities. Because of these properties, they have been proposed as building blocks of future electronic devices with unprecedentedly high information density and low energy consumption. The electrical detection of skyrmions via the Topological Hall Effect (THE), has so far been demonstrated only at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we report the observation of a skyrmion Topological Hall Effect near room temperature (276 K) in a mesoscopic lamella of FeGe. This region unambiguously coincides wit…
Using a particle-based simulation model, we show that quenched disorder creates a drive-dependent skyrmion Hall effect as measured by the change in the ratio $R=V_{\perp}/V_{||}$ of the skyrmion velocity perpendicular ($V_{\perp}$) and parallel ($V_{||}$) to an external drive. $R$ is zero at depinning and increases linearly with increasing drive, in agreement with recent experimental observations. At sufficiently high drives where the skyrmions enter a free flow regime, $R$ saturates to the disorder-free limit. This behavior is robust for a wide range of disorder strengths and intrinsic Hall a…
Skyrmions and skyrmion crystal (SkX) discovered in chiral magnets show unique physical properties due to their nontrivial topology such as the stability against the annihilation and the motion driven by the ultralow current density, which can be advantageous for the device applications such as magnetic memories. Especially, the chiral dynamics, i.e., the velocity perpendicular to the force acting on a skyrmion, is a key to avoid the impurity potential and enhances its mobility. However, the collective pinning of SkX occurs by the disorder, which is crucial for its low energy properties. Here, …
We study the collective dynamics of the Skyrmion crystal (SkX) in thin films of ferromagnetic metals resulting from the nontrivial Skyrmion topology. We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.
We study the behavior of skyrmions in thin films under the action of stochastic torques arising from thermal fluctuations. We find that the Brownian motion of skyrmions is described by a stochastic Thiele's equation and its corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation is recognized as the one for a high-friction Brownian particle which has been studied extensively in different physical contexts. It is shown that thermal fluctuations favor the skyrmion motion allowing a finite mobility even in presence of pinning traps. We calculate explicitly the mobility tensor o…
Using Langevin molecular dynamics simulations we study relaxation processes of interacting skyrmion systems with and without quenched disorder. Using the typical diffusion length as the time-dependent length characterizing the relaxation process, we find that clean systems always display dynamical scaling, and this even in cases where the typical length is not a simple power law of time. In the presence of the Magnus force, two different regimes are identified as a function of the noise strength. The Magnus force has also a major impact when attractive pinning sites are present, as this veloci…
We numerically examine thermal effects on the skyrmion Hall angle for driven skyrmions interacting with quenched disorder. We identify a creep regime in which motion occurs via intermittent jumps between pinned and flowing states. Here the skyrmion Hall angle is zero since the skyrmions have time to relax into equilibrium positions in the pinning sites, eliminating the side-jump motion induced by the Magnus force. At higher drives we find a crossover to a viscous flow regime where the skyrmion Hall angle is finite and increases with increasing drive or temperature. Our results are in agreement…
We study the dynamical control of a magnetic skyrmion bubble by using counter-propagating surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in a ferromagnet. First, we determine the bubble mass and derive the force due to SAWs acting on a magnetic bubble using Thiele's method. The force that pushes the bubble is proportional to the strain gradient for the major strain component. We then study the dynamical pinning and motion of magnetic bubbles by SAWs in a nanowire. In a disk geometry, we propose a SAWs-driven skyrmion bubble oscillator with two resonant frequencies.
We consider current-driven motion of magnetic skyrmions in granular magnetic films. The study uses micromagnetic modeling and phenomenological analysis based on the Thiele formalism. Remarkably, disorder enhances the effective skyrmion Hall effect that depends on the magnitude of the driving force (current density and non-adiabaticity parameter). The origin is sliding motion of the skyrmion along the grain boundaries, followed by pinning and depinning at the grain junctions. A side-jump can occur during this depinning process. In addition, the critical current that triggers the skyrmion motion…
We study how impurities influence the current-induced dynamics of magnetic Skyrmions moving in a racetrack geometry. For this, we solve numerically the generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation extended by the current-induced spin transfer torque. In particular, we investigate two classes of impurities, non-conducting and magnetic impurities. The former are magnetically rigid objects and yield to an inhomogeneous current density over the racetrack which we determine separately by solving the fundamental electrostatic equations. In contrast, magnetic impurities leave the applied current dens…
When magnetic skyrmions are moved via currents, they do not strictly travel along the path of the current, instead their motion also gains a transverse component. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect can be detrimental in potential skyrmion devices because it drives skyrmions towards the edge of their hosting material where they face potential annihilation. Here we experimentally modify a skyrmion model system - an atomic Pd/Fe bilayer on Ir(111) - by decorating the film edge with ferromagnetic Co/Fe patches. Employing spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that this ferro…
Using a particle based model, we investigate the skyrmion dynamical behavior in a channel where the upper wall contains divots of one depth and the lower wall contains divots of a different depth. Under an applied driving force, skyrmions in the channels move with a finite skyrmion Hall angle that deflects them toward the upper wall for $-x$ direction driving and the lower wall for $+x$ direction driving. When the upper divots have zero height, the skyrmions are deflected against the flat upper wall for $-x$ direction driving and the skyrmion velocity depends linearly on the drive. For $+x$ di…
We study the dynamics and velocity-force curves of a skyrmion moving over a two-dimensional periodic substrate using simulations of a particle-based skyrmion model, focusing on the role of the non-dissipative Magnus term. In the overdamped limit, the skyrmion depins into a sliding state with a Hall angle of zero. When a Magnus term is included, the Hall angle is nonzero in the absence of a substrate. On a periodic substrate, the Hall angle varies with the drive amplitude. Due to the substrate symmetry the Hall angle does not change continuously with drive, but forms a series of discrete steps …
We demonstrate room-temperature stabilization of dipolar magnetic skyrmions with diameters in the range of $100$ nm in a single ultrathin layer of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl (CFA) under moderate magnetic fields. Current-induced skyrmion dynamics in microwires is studied with a scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometer operating in the photoluminescence quenching mode. We first demonstrate skyrmion nucleation by spin-orbit torque and show that its efficiency can be significantly improved using tilted magnetic fields, an effect which is not specific to Heusler alloys and could be advantageous for…
Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for developing high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate room temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) coupled to Pt. We track the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin-orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in Tm…
We show using numerical simulations that slowly driven skyrmions interacting with random pinning move via correlated jumps or avalanches. The avalanches exhibit power law distributions in their duration and size, and the average avalanche shape for different avalanche durations can be scaled to a universal function, in agreement with theoretical predictions for systems in a nonequilibrium critical state. A distinctive feature of skyrmions is the influence of the non-dissipative Magnus term. When we increase the ratio of the Magnus term to the damping term, a change in the universality class of…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological solitons that exhibit an increased stability against annihilation, and can be displaced with low current densities, making them a promising candidate as an information carrier. In order to demonstrate a viable skyrmion-based memory device, it is necessary to reliably and reproducibly nucleate, displace, detect, and delete the magnetic skyrmions. While the skyrmion displacement and detection have both been investigated in detail, much less attention has been dedicated to the study of the sub-ns dynamics of the skyrmion nucleation process. Only limited studies …
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin textures touted as next-generation computing elements. When subjected to lateral currents, skyrmions move at considerable speeds. Their topological charge results in an additional transverse deflection known as the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). While promising, their dynamic phenomenology with current, skyrmion size, geometric effects and disorder remain to be established. Here we report on the ensemble dynamics of individual skyrmions forming dense arrays in Pt/Co/MgO wires by examining over 20,000 instances of motion across currents and fields. The skyrmi…
We consider a simple model for examining the effects of quenched disorder on drag consisting of particles interacting via a Yukawa potential that are placed in two coupled one-dimensional channels. The particles in one channel are driven and experience a drag from the undriven particles in the second channel. In the absence of pinning, for a finite driving force there is no pinned phase; instead, there are two dynamical regimes of completely coupled or locked flow and partially coupled flow. When pinning is added to one or both channels, we find that a remarkably rich variety of dynamical phas…
