In this expository note we highlight the correlation function method as a unified approach in proving both hydrodynamic limits and fluctuation limits for reaction diffusion particle systems. For simplicity we focus on the case when the hydrodynamic limit is $\partial_t u=\frac{1}{2}Δu -u^2$, one of the simplest nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations. The outline of the proof follows from Chapter 4 of De Masi and Presutti [7] but to simplify the presentation, we consider reflected Brownian motion instead of reflected random walks. We also briefly mention the key ideas in proving the fluctuation result.
A class of interacting particle systems on $\mathbb{Z}$, involving instantaneously annihilating or coalescing nearest neighbour random walks, are shown to be Pfaffan point processes for all deterministic initial conditions. As diffusion limits, explicit Pfaffan kernels are derived for a variety of coalescing and annihilating Brownian systems. For Brownian motions on $\mathbb{R}$, depending on the initial conditions, the corresponding kernels are closely related to the bulk and edge scaling limits of the Pfaffan point process for real eigenvalues for the real Ginibre ensemble of random matrices…
Consider a system of particles moving independently as Brownian motions until two of them meet, when the colliding pair annihilates instantly. The construction of such a system of annihilating Brownian motions (aBMs) is straightforward as long as we start with a finite number of particles, but is more involved for infinitely many particles. In particular, if we let the set of starting points become increasingly dense in the real line it is not obvious whether the resulting systems of aBMs converge and what the possible limit points (entrance laws) are. In this paper, we show that aBMs arise as…
The paper considers instantly coalescing, or instantly annihilating, systems of one-dimensional Brownian particles on the real line. Under maximal entrance laws, the distribution of the particles at a fixed time is shown to be Pfaffian point processes closely related to the Pfaffian point process describing one dimensional distribution of real eigenvalues in the real Ginibre ensemble of random matrices. As an application, an exact large time asymptotic for the n-point density function for coalescing particles is derived.
We prove that the multi-time particle distributions for annihilating Brownian motions, under the maximal entrance law on the real line, are extended Pfaffian point processes

We study trajectories of d-dimensional Brownian Motion in Poissonian potential up to the hitting time of a distant hyper-plane. Our Poissonian potential V can be associated to a field of traps whose centers location is given by a Poisson Point process and whose radii are IID distributed with a common distribution that has unbounded support; it has the particularity of having long-range correlation. We focus on the case where the law of the trap radii has power-law decay and prove that superdiffusivity hold under certain condition, and get a lower bound on the volume exponent. Results differ qu…
The peanosphere (or "mating of trees") construction of Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield encodes certain types of $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces ($γ\in (0,2)$) decorated with an independent SLE$_κ$ ($κ= 16/γ^2 > 4$) in terms of a correlated two-dimensional Brownian motion and provides a framework for showing that random planar maps decorated with statistical physics models converge to LQG decorated with an SLE. Previously, the correlation for the Brownian motion was only explicitly identified as $-\cos(4π/κ)$ for $κ\in (4,8]$ and unknown for $κ> 8$. The main result of this work i…
We define and study a set of operators that compute statistical properties of the Brownian Loop Soup, a conformally invariant gas of random Brownian loops (Brownian paths constrained to begin and end at the same point) in two dimensions. We prove that the correlation functions of these operators have many of the properties of conformal primaries in a conformal field theory, and compute their conformal dimension. The dimensions are real and positive, but have the novel feature that they vary continuously as a periodic function of a real parameter. We comment on the relation of the Brownian Loop…
Estimating dynamic correlation between a pair of time series is of importance in many applications. We present new estimators for the dynamic correlation between a pair of correlated Brownian motions and separately for dynamic correlation between a pair of correlated Geometric Brownian motions. We show that, as the sample size increases, all estimators presented in this paper converge in probability to the underlying true dynamic correlation.
We compute analytically and in closed form the four-point correlation function in the plane, and the two-point correlation function in the upper half-plane, of layering vertex operators in the two dimensional conformally invariant system known as the Brownian Loop Soup. These correlation functions depend on multiple continuous parameters: the insertion points of the operators, the intensity of the soup, and the charges of the operators. In the case of the four-point function there is non-trivial dependence on five continuous parameters: the cross-ratio, the intensity, and three real charges. T…
Non-colliding Brownian particles in one dimension is studied. $N$ Brownian particles start from the origin at time 0 and then they do not collide with each other until finite time $T$. We derive the determinantal expressions for the multitime correlation functions using the self-dual quaternion matrices. We consider the scaling limit of the infinite particles $N \to \infty$ and the infinite time interval $T \to \infty$. Depending on the scaling, two limit theorems are proved for the multitime correlation functions, which may define temporally inhomogeneous infinite particle systems.
Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) is a centered self-similar Gaussian process with stationary increments, which depends on a parameter $H \in (0, 1)$ called the Hurst index. The use of time-changed processes in modeling often requires the knowledge of their second order properties such as covariance function. This paper provides the explicit expression for the correlation structure for time-changed fractional Brownian motion. Several examples useful in applications are discussed.
The symbiotic branching model is a spatial population model describing the dynamics of two interacting types that can only branch if both types are present. A classical result for the underlying stochastic partial differential equation identifies moments of the solution via a duality to a system of Brownian motions with dynamically changing colors. In this paper, we revisit this duality and give it a new interpretation. This new approach allows us to extend the duality to the limit as the branching rate $γ$ is sent to infinity. This limit is particularly interesting since it captures the large…
In the paper [7] we studied the temporally inhomogeneous system of non-colliding Brownian motions and proved that multi-time correlation functions are generally given by the quaternion determinants in the sense of Dyson and Mehta. In this report we give another proof of the equivalent statement using Fredholm determinant and Fredholm pfaffian, and claim that the present system is a typical example of pfaffian processes.
In this paper we study mesoscopic fluctuations for Dyson's Brownian motion with $β=2$. Dyson showed that the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) is the invariant measure for this stochastic evolution and conjectured that, when starting from a generic configuration of initial points, the time that is needed for the GUE statistics to become dominant depends on the scale we look at: The microscopic correlations arrive at the equilibrium regime sooner than the macrosopic correlations. In this paper we investigate the transition on the intermediate, i.e. mesoscopic, scales. The time scales that we cons…
This article presents various weak laws of large numbers for the so-called realised covariation of a bivariate stationary stochastic process which is not a semimartingale. More precisely, we consider two cases: Bivariate moving average processes with stochastic correlation and bivariate Brownian semistationary processes with stochastic correlation. In both cases, we can show that the (possibly scaled) realised covariation converges to the integrated (possibly volatility modulated) stochastic correlation process.
We consider directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with exponential passage times on the vertices. A topic of great interest is the coupling structure of the weights of geodesics as the endpoints are varied spatially and temporally. A particular specialization is when one considers geodesics to points varying in the time direction starting from a given initial data. This paper considers the flat initial condition which corresponds to line-to-point last passage times. Settling a conjecture by Ferrari and Spohn (SIGMA, 2016), we show that for the passage times from the line $x+y=0$ …
This paper is the third chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. In this paper, we study the convergence of local bulk statistics for linearized covariance matrices under Dyson's Brownian motion. We consider deterministic initial data $V$ approximate the Dyson Brownian motion for linearized covariance matrices by the Wigner flow. Using universality results for the Wigner flow, we deduce universality for the linearized covariance matrices. We deduce bulk universality of averaged bulk correlation functions for both biregular bipartite graphs and honest covariance matrices. We also …
As an image of the many-to-one map of loop-erasing operation $\LE$ of random walks, a self-avoiding walk (SAW) is obtained. The loop-erased random walk (LERW) model is the statistical ensemble of SAWs such that the weight of each SAW $ζ$ is given by the total weight of all random walks $π$ which are inverse images of $ζ$, $\{π: \LE(π)=ζ\}$. We regard the Brownian paths as the continuum limits of random walks and consider the statistical ensemble of loop-erased Brownian paths (LEBPs) as the continuum limits of the LERW model. Following the theory of Fomin on nonintersecting LERWs, we introduce …
We prove the convergence of the extremal processes for variable speed branching Brownian motions where the "speed functions", that describe the time-inhomogeneous variance, lie strictly below their concave hull and satisfy a certain weak regularity condition. These limiting objects are universal in the sense that they only depend on the slope of the speed function at $0$ and the final time $t$. The proof is based on previous results for two-speed BBM obtained in a recent paper of ours and uses Gaussian comparison arguments to extend these to the general case.
This paper continues a study on trajectories of Brownian Motion in a field of soft trap whose radius distribution is unbounded. We show here for both point-to-point and point-to-plane model the volume exponent (the exponent associated to transversal fluctuation of the trajectories) is strictly less than one and give an explicit upper bound that depends on the parameters of the problem. In some specific cases, this upper bound matches the lower bound proved in the first part of this work and we get the exact value of the volume exponent.
We propose a new algorithm to generate a fractional Brownian motion, with a given Hurst parameter, 1/2<H<1 using the correlated Bernoulli random variables with parameter p; having a certain density. This density is constructed using the link between the correlation of multivariate Gaussian random variables and the correlation of their dichotomized binary variables and the relation between the correlation coefficient and the persistence parameter. We prove that the normalized sum of trajectories of this proposed random walk yields a Gaussian process whose scaling limit is the desired fractional…
We derive a model based on the structure of dependence between a Brownian motion and its reflection according to a barrier. The structure of dependence presents two states of correlation: one of comonotonicity with a positive correlation and one of countermonotonicity with a negative correlation. This model of dependence between two Brownian motions $B^1$ and $B^2$ allows for the value of $\mathbb{P}\left(B^1_t - B^2_t \geq x\right)$ to be higher than $\frac{1}{2}$ when $x$ is close to 0, which is not the case when the dependence is modeled by a constant correlation. It can be used for risk ma…
Tied-down renewal processes are generalisations of the Brownian bridge, where an event (or a zero crossing) occurs both at the origin of time and at the final observation time $t$. We give an analytical derivation of the two-time correlation function for such processes in the Laplace space of all temporal variables. This yields the exact asymptotic expression of the correlation in the Porod regime of short separations between the two times and in the persistence regime of large separations. We also investigate other quantities, such as the backward and forward recurrence times, as well as the …
Passive scalar motion in a family of random Gaussian velocity fields with long-range correlations is shown to converge to persistent fractional Brownian motions in long times.
We study the correlations between the maxima $m$ and $M$ of a Brownian motion (BM) on the time intervals $[0,t_1]$ and $[0,t_2]$, with $t_2>t_1$. We determine exact forms of the distribution functions $P(m,M)$ and $P(G = M - m)$, and calculate the moments $\mathbb{E}\{\left(M - m\right)^k\}$ and the cross-moments $\mathbb{E}\{m^l M^k\}$ with arbitrary integers $l$ and $k$. We show that correlations between $m$ and $M$ decay as $\sqrt{t_1/t_2}$ when $t_2/t_1 \to \infty$, revealing strong memory effects in the statistics of the BM maxima. We also compute the Pearson correlation coefficient $ρ(m,…
Using the determinantal formula of Biane, Bougerol, and O'Connell, we give multitime joint probability densities to the noncolliding Brownian motion with drift, where the number of particles is finite. We study a special case such that the initial positions of particles are equidistant with a period $a$ and the values of drift coefficients are well-ordered with a scale $σ$. We show that, at each time $t >0$, the single-time probability density of particle system is exactly transformed to the biorthogonal Stieltjes-Wigert matrix model in the Chern-Simons theory introduced by Dolivet and Tierz. …
We analyze the joint distributions and temporal correlations between the partial maximum $m$ and the global maximum $M$ achieved by a Brownian Bridge on the subinterval $[0,t_1]$ and on the entire interval $[0,t]$, respectively. We determine three probability distribution functions: The joint distribution $P(m,M)$ of both maxima; the distribution $P(m)$ of the partial maximum; and the distribution $Π(G)$ of the gap between the maxima, $G = M-m$. We present exact results for the moments of these distributions and quantify the temporal correlations between $m$ and $M$ by calculating the Pearson …
The work developed in the paper concerns the multivariate fractional Brownian motion (mfBm) viewed through the lens of the wavelet transform. After recalling some basic properties on the mfBm, we calculate the correlation structure of its wavelet transform. We particularly study the asymptotic behavior of the correlation, showing that if the analyzing wavelet has a sufficient number of null first order moments, the decomposition eliminates any possible long-range (inter)dependence. The cross-spectral density is also considered in a second part. Its existence is proved and its evaluation is per…
We consider $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges conditioned to stay below a fixed threshold. We consider a scaling limit where the limit shape is tangential to the threshold. In the large $N$ limit, we determine the limiting distribution of the top Brownian bridge conditioned to stay below a function as well as the limiting correlation kernel of the system. It is a one-parameter family of processes which depends on the tuning of the threshold position on the natural fluctuation scale. We also discuss the relation to the six-vertex model and to the Aztec diamond on restricted domains.
