The work developed in the paper concerns the multivariate fractional Brownian motion (mfBm) viewed through the lens of the wavelet transform. After recalling some basic properties on the mfBm, we calculate the correlation structure of its wavelet transform. We particularly study the asymptotic behavior of the correlation, showing that if the analyzing wavelet has a sufficient number of null first order moments, the decomposition eliminates any possible long-range (inter)dependence. The cross-spectral density is also considered in a second part. Its existence is proved and its evaluation is performed using a von Bahr-Essen like representation of the function $\sign(t) |t|^α$. The behavior of the cross-spectral density of the wavelet field at the zero frequency is also developed and confirms the results provided by the asymptotic analysis of the correlation.
We propose a wavelet-based approach to construct consistent estimators of the pointwise Hölder exponent of a multifractional Brownian motion, in the case where this underlying process is not directly observed. The relative merits of our estimator are discussed, and we introduce an application to the problem of estimating the functional parameter of a nonlinear model.
Operator fractional Brownian motion (OFBM) is the natural vector-valued extension of the univariate fractional Brownian motion. Instead of a scalar parameter, the law of an OFBM scales according to a Hurst matrix that affects every component of the process. In this paper, we develop the wavelet analysis of OFBM, as well as a new estimator for the Hurst matrix of bivariate OFBM. For OFBM, the univariate-inspired approach of analyzing the entry-wise behavior of the wavelet spectrum as a function of the (wavelet) scales is fraught with difficulties stemming from mixtures of power laws. The propos…
The Davenport spectrum is a modification of the classical Kolmogorov spectrum for the inertial range of turbulence that accounts for non-scaling low frequency behavior. Like the classical fractional Brownian motion vis-à-vis the Kolmogorov spectrum, tempered fractional Brownian motion (tfBm) is a canonical model that displays the Davenport spectrum. The autocorrelation of the increments of tfBm displays semi-long range dependence (hyperbolic and quasi-exponential decays over moderate and large scales, respectively), a phenomenon that has been observed in wide a range of applications from wind …
In this contribution, we extend the methodology proposed in Abry and Didier (2017) to obtain the first joint estimator of the real parts of the Hurst eigenvalues of $n$-variate OFBM. The procedure consists of a wavelet regression on the log-eigenvalues of the sample wavelet spectrum. The estimator is shown to be consistent for any time reversible OFBM and, under stronger assumptions, also asymptotically normal starting from either continuous or discrete time measurements. Simulation studies establish the finite sample effectiveness of the methodology and illustrate its benefits compared to uni…
Self-similarity is widely considered the reference framework for modeling the scaling properties of real-world data. However, most theoretical studies and their practical use have remained univariate. Operator Fractional Brownian Motion (OfBm) was recently proposed as a multivariate model for self-similarity. Yet it has remained seldom used in applications because of serious issues that appear in the joint estimation of its numerous parameters. While the univariate fractional Brownian motion requires the estimation of two parameters only, its mere bivariate extension already involves 7 paramet…
This paper reviews and extends some recent results on the multivariate fractional Brownian motion (mfBm) and its increment process. A characterization of the mfBm through its covariance function is obtained. Similarly, the correlation and spectral analyses of the increments are investigated. On the other hand we show that (almost) all mfBm's may be reached as the limit of partial sums of (super)linear processes. Finally, an algorithm to perfectly simulate the mfBm is presented and illustrated by some simulations.
We study the Hölderian regularity of Gaussian wavelets series and show that they display, almost surely, three types of points: slow, ordinary and rapid. In particular, this fact holds for the Fractional Brownian Motion. We also show that this property is satisfied for a multifractal extension of Gaussian wavelet series. Finally, we remark that the existence of slow points is specific to these functions.
We construct a wavelet-based almost sure uniform approximation of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) B_t^(H), t in [0, 1], of Hurst index H in (0, 1). Our results show that by Haar wavelets which merely have one vanishing moment, an almost sure uniform expansion of fBm of H in (0, 1) can be established. The convergence rate of our approximation is derived. We also describe a parallel algorithm that generates sample paths of an fBm efficiently.
G-framework is presented by Peng [41] for measure risk under uncertainty. In this paper, we define fractional G-Brownian motion (fGBm). Fractional G-Brownian motion is a centered G-Gaussian process with zero mean and stationary increments in the sense of sub-linearity with Hurst index $H\in (0,1)$. This process has stationary increments, self-similarity, and long rang dependence properties in the sense of sub-linearity. These properties make the fractional G-Brownian motion a suitable driven process in mathematical finance. We construct wavelet decomposition of the fGBm by wavelet with compact…
In this paper we introduce the \textit{multivariate} Brownian semistationary (BSS) processes and study the joint asymptotic behaviour of its realised covariation using in-fill asymptotics. First, we present a central limit theorem for general stationary multivariate Gaussian processes, which are not necessarily semimartingales. Then, we show weak laws of large numbers, central limit theorems and feasible results for BSS processes. An explicit example based on the so-called gamma kernels is also provided.
Fractional Brownian motion, H-FBM , of index with d-dimensional time is considered in a spherical domain that contains 0 at its boundary. The main result : the log-asymptotics of probability that H-FBM does not exceed a fixed positive level is (H-d)logT(1+o(1)), where T>>1 is radius of the domain.
Motivated by an approximation problem from mathematical finance, we analyse the stability of the boundary crossing probability for the multivariate Brownian motion process, with respect to small changes of the boundary. Under broad assumptions on the nature of the boundary, including the Lipschitz condition (in a Hausdorff-type metric) on its time cross-sections, we obtain an analogue of the Borovkov and Novikov (2005) upper bound for the difference between boundary hitting probabilities for "close boundaries" in the univariate case. We also obtained upper bounds for the first boundary crossin…
The fractional Brownian motion of index $0 < H < 1$, H-FBM, with d-dimensional time is considered on an expanding set TG, where G is a bounded convex domain that contains 0 at its boundary. The main result: if 0 is a point of smoothness of the boundary, then the log-asymptotics of probability that H-FBM does not exceed a fixed positive level in TG is $(H - d + o(1)) \log T$, $T\to\infty$. Some generalizations of this result to isotropic but not self-similar Gaussian processes with stationary increments are also considered.
We use Stein's method to obtain a bound on the distance between scaled $p$-dimensional random walks and a $p$-dimensional (correlated) Brownian Motion. We consider dependence schemes including those in which the summands in scaled sums are weakly dependent and their $p$ components are strongly correlated. As an example application, we prove a functional limit theorem for exceedances in an $m$-scans process, together with a bound on the rate of convergence. We also find a bound on the rate of convergence of scaled U-statistics to Brownian Motion, representing an example of a sum of strongly dep…
In this article we will introduce the realised semicovariance for Brownian semistationary (BSS) processes, which is obtained from the decomposition of the realised covariance matrix into components based on the signs of the returns, and study its in-fill asymptotic properties. More precisely, a weak convergence in the space of càdlàg functions endowed with the Skorohod topology for the realised semicovariance of a general Gaussian process with stationary increments is proved first. The methods are based on Breuer-Major theorems and on a moment bound for sums of products of Gaussian vector's fu…
Modelling of multiple simultaneous failures in insurance, finance and other areas of applied probability is important especially from the point of view of pandemic-type events. A benchmark limiting model for the analysis of multiple failures is the classical $d$-dimensional Brownian risk model (Brm), see [1]. From both theoretical and practical point of view, of interest is the calculation of the probability of multiple simultaneous failures in a given time horizon. The main findings of this contribution concern the approximation of the probability that at least $k$ out of $d$ components of Br…
In this paper the whole family of fractional Brownian motions is constructed as a single Gaussian field indexed by time and the Hurst index simultaneously. The field has a simple covariance structure and it is related to two generalizations of fractional Brownian motion known as multifractional Brownian motions. A mistake common to the existing literature regarding multifractional Brownian motions is pointed out and corrected. The Gaussian field, due to inherited ``duality'', reveals a new way of constructing martingales associated with the odd and even part of a fractional Brownian motion and…
In this study, we develop a new theory of estimating Hurst parame- ter using conic multivariate adaptive regression splines (CMARS) method. We concentrate on the strong solution of stochastic differentional equations (SDEs) driven by fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The superiority of our approach to the others is, it not only estimates the Hurst parameter but also finds spline parameters of the stochastic process in an adaptive way. We examine the performance of our estimations using simulated test data. Keywords: Stochastic differential equations, fractional Brownian motion, Hurst parameter…
The purpose of this paper is to establish the multivariate normal convergence for the average of certain Volterra processes constructed from a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/2. Some applications to parameter estimation are then discussed.
We extend recent results on the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of the SYK model to the multivariate case and relate the limit of a dynamical version of the SYK model with the q-Brownian motion, a non-commutative deformation of classical Brownian motion. Furthermore, we extend the results for fluctuations to the multivariate setting and treat also higher correlation functions. The structure of our results for the sparse SYK random matrices resembles the formulas for higher order freeness for ordinary GUE random matrices.
We present a new proof of the extended arc-sine law related to Walsh's Brownian motion, known also as Brownian spider. The main argument mimics the scaling property used previously, in particular by D. Williams in the 1-dimensional Brownian case, which can be generalized to the multivariate case. A discussion concerning the time spent positive by a skew Bessel process is also presented.
Weak variance generalised gamma convolution processes are multivariate Brownian motions weakly subordinated by multivariate Thorin subordinators. Within this class, we extend a result from strong to weak subordination that a driftless Brownian motion gives rise to a self-decomposable process. Under moment conditions on the underlying Thorin measure, we show that this condition is also necessary. We apply our results to some prominent processes such as the weak variance alpha-gamma process, and illustrate the necessity of our moment conditions in some cases.
By the work of P. Lévy, the sample paths of the Brownian motion are known to satisfy a certain Hölder regularity condition almost surely. This was later improved by Ciesielski, who studied the regularity of these paths in Besov and Besov-Orlicz spaces. We review these results and propose new function spaces of Besov type, strictly smaller than those of Ciesielski and Lévy, where the sample paths of the Brownian motion lie in almost surely. In the same spirit, we review and extend the work of Kamont, who investigated the same question for the multivariate Brownian sheet and function spaces of d…
This paper develops the first class of algorithms that enable unbiased estimation of steady-state expectations for multidimensional reflected Brownian motion. In order to explain our ideas, we first consider the case of compound Poisson (possibly Markov modulated) input. In this case, we analyze the complexity of our procedure as the dimension of the network increases and show that, under certain assumptions, the algorithm has polynomial-expected termination time. Our methodology includes procedures that are of interest beyond steady-state simulation and reflected processes. For instance, we u…
We propose a new algorithm to generate a fractional Brownian motion, with a given Hurst parameter, 1/2<H<1 using the correlated Bernoulli random variables with parameter p; having a certain density. This density is constructed using the link between the correlation of multivariate Gaussian random variables and the correlation of their dichotomized binary variables and the relation between the correlation coefficient and the persistence parameter. We prove that the normalized sum of trajectories of this proposed random walk yields a Gaussian process whose scaling limit is the desired fractional…
In this paper we investigate the class of grey Brownian motions $B_{α,β}$ ($0<α<2$, $0<β\leq1$). We show that grey Brownian motion admits different representations in terms of certain known processes, such as fractional Brownian motion, multivariate elliptical distribution or as a subordination. The weak convergence of the increments of $B_{α,β}$ in $t$, $w$-variables are studied. Using the Berman criterium we show that $B_{α,β}$ admits a $λ$-square integrable local time $L^{B_{α,β}}(\cdot,I)$ almost surely ($λ$ Lebesgue measure). Moreover, we prove that this local time can be weak-approximate…
We establish universality for the largest singular values of products of random matrices with right unitarily invariant distributions, in a regime where the number of matrix factors and size of the matrices tend to infinity simultaneously. The behavior of the largest log singular values coincides with the large N limit of Dyson Brownian motion with a characteristic drift vector consisting of equally spaced coordinates, which matches the large N limit of the largest log singular values of Brownian motion on GL(N, C). Our method utilizes the formalism of multivariate Bessel generating functions,…
In this paper, we analyze a multivariate counterpart of the generalized weighted Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, which is the supremum of weighted locally stationary chi-square process over non-compact interval. The boundedness and the exact tail asymptotic behavior of the statistics are derived. We illustrate our findings by two examples where the statistic is defined by Brownian bridge and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
In Ayache and Taqqu (2005), the multifractional Brownian (mBm) motion is obtained by replacing the constant parameter $H$ of the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) by a smooth enough functional parameter $H(.)$ depending on the time $t$. Here, we consider the process $Z$ obtained by replacing in the wavelet expansion of the fBm the index $H$ by a function $H(.)$ depending on the dyadic point $k/2^j$. This process was introduced in Benassi et al (2000) to model fBm with piece-wise constant Hurst index and continuous paths. In this work, we investigate the case where the functional parameter satis…
This paper provides a multivariate extension of Bertoin's pathwise construction of a Lévy process conditioned to stay positive/negative. Thus obtained processes conditioned to stay in half-spaces are closely related to the original process on a compact time interval seen from its directional extremal points. In the case of a correlated Brownian motion the law of the conditioned process is obtained by a linear transformation of a standard Brownian motion and an independent Bessel-3 process. Further motivation is provided by a limit theorem corresponding to zooming in on a Lévy process with a Br…
