We study, using the example of general covariance, to what extent a would-be non-abelian extension of free field abelian gauge theory can be helped by a field redefinition; answer - not much! However, models resulting from dimensional reduction also include non-gauge fields to be integrated out, thereby offering a wider choice of redefinitions whose effects may indeed prove useful.
The three dimensional abelian fermionic determinant of a two component massive spinor in flat euclidean space-time is resetted to a pure Chern-Simons action through a nonlinear redefinition of the gauge field.
By constructing a nilpotent extended BRST operator $\bs$ that involves the N=2 global supersymmetry transformations of one chirality, we find exact field redefinitions that allows to construct the Topological Yang Mills Theory from the ordinary Euclidean N=2 Super Yang Mills theory in flat space. We also show that the given field redefinitions yield the Baulieu-Singer formulation of Topological Yang Mills theory when after an instanton inspired truncation of the theory is used.
We review some recent results concerning the Hartle--Hawking wavefunction of the universe. We focus on pure Einstein theory of gravity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We carefully implement the gauge-fixing procedure for the minisuperspace path integral, by identifying the single modulus and by using diffeomorphism-invariant measures for the ghosts and the scale factor. Field redefinitions of the scale factor yield different prescriptions for computing the no-boundary ground-state wavefunction. They give rise to an infinite set of ground-state wavefunctions, each satisfyin…
Supergravity (SUGRA) theories are specified by a few functions, most notably the real Kähler function denoted by $G(T_i, \bar {T}_i) = K + \log |W|^2$, where K is a real Kähler potential, and W is a holomorphic superpotential. A field redefinition $T_i \rightarrow f_1(T_i)$ does not change neither the theory, nor the Kähler geometry. Similarly, the Kähler transformation, $K \rightarrow K + f_2 + \bar f_2, W \rightarrow e^{-f_2} W$ where $f_2$ is holomorphic also leaves G and hence the theory and the geometry invariant. However, if we perform a field redefinition only in $K(T_i,\bar{T}_i) \righ…
We study the solution to the Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identities in spontaneously broken effective gauge theories for a non-Abelian gauge group. The procedure to extract the $β$-functions of the theory in the presence of (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions is elucidated.
The leading terms in the tree-level effective action for the massless fields of the bosonic open string are calculated by integrating out all massive fields in Witten's cubic string field theory. In both the abelian and nonabelian theories, field redefinitions make it possible to express the effective action in terms of the conventional field strength. The resulting actions reproduce the leading terms in the abelian and nonabelian Born-Infeld theories, and include (covariant) derivative corrections.
We determine the non-abelian Born-Infeld action, including fermions, as it results from the four-point tree-level open superstring scattering amplitudes at order alpha'^2. We find that, after an appropriate field redefinition all terms at this order can be written as a symmetrised trace. We confront this action with the results that follow from kappa-symmetry and conclude that the recently proposed non-abelian kappa-symmetry cannot be extended to cubic orders in the Born-Infeld curvature.
We present the most general gauge-invariant action functional for coupled 1- and 2-form gauge fields with kinetic terms in generic dimensions, i.e. dropping eventual contributions that can be added in particular space-time dimensions only such as higher Chern-Simons terms. After appropriate field redefinitions it coincides with a truncation of the Samtleben-Szegin-Wimmer action. In the process one sees explicitly how the existence of a gauge invariant functional enforces that the most general semi-strict Lie 2-algebra describing the bundle of a non-abelian gerbe gets reduced to a very particul…
One of the possible approaches to the construction of massive higher spin interactions is to use their gauge invariant description based on the introduction of the appropriate set of Stueckelberg fields. Recently, the general properties of such approach were investigated in [1]. The main findings of this work can be formulated in two statements. At first, there always exist enough field redefinitions to bring the vertex into abelian form where there are some corrections to the gauge transformations but the gauge algebra is undeformed. At second, with the further (as a rule higher derivative) f…
Generalized dualities had an intriguing incursion into Double Field Theory (DFT) in terms of local $O(d,d)$ transformations. We review this idea and use the higher derivative formulation of DFT to compute the first order corrections to generalized dualities. Our main result is a unified expression that can be easily specified to any generalized T-duality (Abelian, non-Abelian, Poisson-Lie, etc.) or deformations such as Yang-Baxter, in any of the theories captured by the bi-parametric deformation (bosonic, heterotic strings and HSZ theory), in any supergravity scheme related by field redefiniti…
We analyse the constraints of an Abelian 2-form gauge theory using Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic formalism. Further, this theory is treated as a constrained system in the context of Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky formalism to retrieve the BRST symmetry. Using the fields decompositions the effective action for Abelian 2-form gauge theory is written in terms of diagonalized uncanonical part and BRST exact one. The nilpotent BRST and contracting homotopy $σ$ closed transformations with field redefinitions are shown as the Darboux transformations used in the Faddeev-Jackiw formalism.
Using the method developed in {\tt hep-th/0103015}, we determine the non-abelian Born-Infeld action through ${\cal O}(α'{}^3)$. We start from solutions to a Yang-Mills theory which define a stable holomorphic vector bundle. Subsequently we investigate its deformation away from this limit. Through $ {\cal O}(α'{}^2)$, a unique, modulo field redefinitions, solution emerges. At $ {\cal O}(α'{}^3)$ we find a one-parameter family of allowed deformations. The presence of derivative terms turns out to be essential. Finally, we present a detailed comparison of our results to existing, partial results.
We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we obtain a set of algebraic conditions on certain fields which in the on-shell theory are constructed as composite ones out of the physical fields. These conditions must hence be satisfied by any kind of theory in ten dimensions invariant under supersymmetry and some, abelian or non-abelian, gauge symmetry. Deformations of the ordinary SYM theory (as well as the fields) are identified as elements of a cer…
We construct the general vortex solution in the fully-Higgsed, color-flavor locked vacuum of a non-Abelian gauge theory, where the gauge group is taken to be the product of an arbitrary simple group and U(1), with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term. The vortex moduli space is determined.
In the context of the $AdS_{4}/CFT_{3}$ correspondence between higher spin fields and vector theories, we use the constructive bilocal fields based approach to this correspondence, to demonstrate, at the $IR$ critical point of the interacting vector theory and directly in the bulk, the removal of the $Δ=1$ ($s=0$) state from the higher spins field spectrum, and to exhibit simple Klein-Gordon higher spin Hamiltonians. The bulk variables and higher spin fields are obtained in a simple manner from boundary bilocals, by the change of variables previously derived for the $UV$ critical point (in mom…
We propose that the Yang-Baxter deformation of the symmetric space sigma-model parameterized by an r-matrix solving the homogeneous (classical) Yang-Baxter equation is equivalent to the non-abelian dual of the undeformed model with respect to a subgroup determined by the structure of the r-matrix. We explicitly demonstrate this on numerous examples in the case of the AdS_5 sigma-model. The same should also be true for the full AdS_5 x S^5 supercoset model, providing an explanation for and generalizing several recent observations relating homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations based on non-abelia…
We consider, in the harmonic superspace approach, the six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric model of abelian gauge multiplet coupled to a hypermultiplet. The superficial degree of divergence is evaluated and the structure of possible one-loop divergences is analyzed. Using the superfield proper-time and background-field technique, we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action depending on both the gauge multiplet and the hypermultiplet. The corresponding counterterms contain the purely gauge multiplet contribution together with the mixed contributions of the gauge multiplet a…
In a recent paper Seiberg and Witten have argued that the full action describing the dynamics of coincident branes in the weak coupling regime is invariant under a specific field redefinition, which replaces the group of ordinary gauge transformations with the one of noncommutative gauge theory. This paper represents a first step towards the classification of invariant actions, in the simpler setting of the abelian single brane theory. In particular we consider a simplified model, in which the group of noncommutative gauge transformations is replaced with the group of symplectic diffeomorphism…
By constructing a nilpotent extended BRST operator $\bs$ that involves the N=2 global supersymmetry transformations of one chirality, we show that the standard N=2 off-shell Super Yang Mills Action can be represented as an exact BRST term $\bs Ψ$, if the gauge fermion $Ψ$ is allowed to depend on the inverse powers of supersymmetry ghosts. By using this nonanalytical structure of the gauge fermion (via inverse powers of supersymmetry ghosts), we give field redefinitions in terms of composite fields of supersymmetry ghosts and N=2 fields and we show that Witten's topological Yang Mills theory ca…
We propose a method of construction of a cubic interaction in massless Higher Spin gauge theory both in flat and in AdS space-times of arbitrary dimensions. We consider a triplet formulation of the Higher Spin gauge theory and generalize the Higher Spin symmetry algebra of the free model to the corresponding algebra for the case of cubic interaction. The generators of this new algebra carry indexes which label the three Higher Spin fields involved into the cubic interaction. The method is based on the use of oscillator formalism and on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) technique. We derive …
In the topologically massive BF model (TMBF) the photon becomes massive via coupling to an antisymmetric tensor, without breaking the U(1) gauge symmetry . There is no need of a Higgs field. The TMBF model is dual to a first-order (in derivatives) formulation of the Maxwell-Proca theory where the antisymmetric field plays the role of an auxiliary field. Since the Maxwell-Proca theory also admits a first-order version which makes use of an auxiliary symmetric tensor, we investigate here a possible generalization of the TMBF model where the photon acquires mass via coupling to a symmetric tensor…
Electric-magnetic dualities are equivalence between strong and weak coupling constants. A standard example is the exchange of electric and magnetic fields in an abelian gauge theory. We show three methods to perform electric-magnetic dualities in the case of the non-commutative $U(1)$ gauge theory. The first method is to use covariant field strengths to be the electric and magnetic fields. We find an invariant form of an equation of motion after performing the electric-magnetic duality. The second method is to use the Seiberg-Witten map to rewrite the non-commutative $U(1)$ gauge theory in ter…
The consistent recursive subtraction of UV divergences order by order in the loop expansion for spontaneously broken effective field theories with dimension-6 derivative operators is presented for an Abelian gauge group. We solve the Slavnov-Taylor identity to all orders in the loop expansion by homotopy techniques and a suitable choice of invariant field coordinates (named bleached variables) for the linearly realized gauge group. This allows one to disentangle the gauge-invariant contributions to off-shell 1-PI amplitudes from those associated with the gauge-fixing and (generalized) non-poly…
We construct a class of nonabelian superconformal (1,0) hypermultiplet theories in six dimensions by introducing an abelian auxiliary field. The gauge fields of this class of theories are non-dynamical, and this class of theories can be viewed as Chern-Simons-matter theories in 6D.
We study two different possibilities of constructing the energy-momentum tensors for non-commutative Abelian Proca field, by using (i) general Noether theorem and (ii) coupling to a weak external gravitational field. Both energy-momentum tensors are not traceless due to the violation of Lorentz invariance in non-commutative spaces. In particular, we show that the obtained energy density of the latter case coincides exactly with that of obtained by Dirac quantization method.
We present a cohomological method for obtaining the non-Abelian Seiberg-Witten map for any gauge group and to any order in theta. By introducing a ghost field, we are able to express the equations defining the Seiberg-Witten map through a coboundary operator, so that they can be solved by constructing a corresponding homotopy operator.
We consider the classification of near-horizon geometries in a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions, with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming that the theory of gravity reduces to a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is typically the case for ungauged supergravities), we show that the functional form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. As an example we apply this to five dimensional minimal supergravity. We also construct an example of a five parameter near-horizon g…
A novel inhomogeneous gauge transformation law is proposed for a non-Abelian adjoint two-form in four dimensions. Rules for constructing actions invariant under this are given. The auxiliary vector field which appears in some of these models transforms like a second connection in the theory. Another local symmetry leaves the compensated three-form field strength invariant, but does not seem to be generated by any combination of local constraints. Both types of symmetries change the action by total divergences, suggesting that boundary degrees of freedom have to be taken into account for local …
A general study of non-abelian duality is presented. We first identify a possible obstruction to the conformal invariance of the dual theory for non-semisimple groups. We construct the exact non-abelian dual for any Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model for any anomaly free subgroup, and the corresponding extension for coset conformal field theories. We characterize the exact non-abelian dual for $σ$-models with chiral isometries and extend the standard notion of duality to anomalous subgroups of WZW models, thus giving a way of constructing dual transformations for different groups on the left and o…
For decades, a lot of work has been devoted to the problem of constructing a non-trivial quantum field theory in four-dimensional space time. This letter addresses the attempts to construct an algebraic quantum field theory in the framework of non-standard theories like hyperfunction or ultra-hyperfunction quantum field theory. For this purpose model theories of formally interacting neutral scalar fields are constructed and some of their characteristic properties like two-point functions are discussed. The formal self-couplings are obtained from local normally-ordered analytic redefinitions of…
We investigate how fields transform under the Poincaré group in nonrelativistic effective field theories of QCD. In constructing these transformations, we rely only on symmetries and field redefinitions to limit the number of allowed terms. By requiring invariance of the action under these transformations, nontrivial relations between Wilson coefficients for both nonrelativistic QCD and potential nonrelativistic QCD are derived. We show explicitly how the Poincaré algebra is satisfied, and how this gives complementary information on the Wilson coefficients. We also briefly discuss the implicat…
In this thesis we study two-dimensional supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models with boundaries. We derive the most general family of boundary conditions in the non-supersymmetric case. Next we show that no further conditions arise when passing to the N = 1 model and we present a manifest N = 1 off-shell formulation. Subsequently, we determine under which conditions a second supersymmetry exists. Finally we recast some of our results in N = 2 superspace. Leaning on these results we then calculate the beta-functions through three loops for an open string sigma-model in the presence of U(1) backg…
We consider U(n+1) Yang-Mills instantons on the space Σ\times S^2, where Σis a compact Riemann surface of genus g. Using an SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction, we show that the U(n+1) instanton equations on Σ\times S^2 are equivalent to non-Abelian vortex equations on Σ. Solutions to these equations are given by pairs (A,ϕ), where A is a gauge potential of the group U(n) and ϕis a Higgs field in the fundamental representation of the group U(n). We briefly compare this model with other non-Abelian Higgs models considered recently. Afterwards we show that for g>1, when Σ\times S^2 becomes a…
There seems to be close relationship between the moduli space of vortices and the moduli space of instantons, which is not yet clearly understood from a standpoint of the field theory. We clarify the reasons why many similarities are found in the methods for constructing the moduli of instanton and vortex, viewed in the light of the notion of the self-duality. We show that the non-Abelian vortex is nothing but the instanton in $R^{2} \times Z_{2}$ from a viewpoint of the noncommutative differential geometry and the gauge theory in discrete space. The action for pure Yang-Mills theory in $R^{2}…
We present a systematic method for constructing consistent interactions for a tensor field of an arbitrary rank in the adjoint representation of an arbitrary gauge group in any space-time dimensions. This method is inspired by the dimensional reduction of Scherk-Schwarz, modifying field strengths with certain Chern-Simons forms, together with modified tensorial gauge transformations. In order to define a consistent field strength of a r-rank tensor B_{μ_1...μ_r}^I in the adjoint representation, we need the multiplet (B_{μ_1...μ_r}^I, B_{μ_1...μ_{r-1}}^{I J}, ..., B_μ^{I_1...I_r}, B^{I_1... I_{…
We have developed the Hamiltonian theory for collective longitudinally polarized colorless excitations (plasmons) in a high-temperature gluon plasma using the general formalism for constructing the wave theory in nonlinear media with dispersion, which was developed by V.E. Zakharov. In this approach, we have explicitly obtained a special canonical transformation that makes it possible to simplify the Hamiltonian of interaction of soft gluon excitations and, hence, to derive a new effective Hamiltonian. The approach developed here is used for constructing a Boltzmann-type kinetic equation descr…
The effective action of a Higgs theory should be gauge-invariant. However, the quantum and/or thermal contributions to the effective potential seem to be gauge-dependent, posing a problem for its physical interpretation. In this paper, we identify the source of the problem and argue that in a Higgs theory, perturbative contributions should be evaluated with the Higgs fields in the polar basis, not in the Cartesian basis. Formally, this observation can be made from the derivation of the Higgs theorem, which we provide. We show explicitly that, properly defined, the effective action for the Abel…
We generalize the BF theory action to the case of a general Lie crossed module $(H \to G)$, where $G$ and $H$ are non-abelian Lie groups. Our construction requires the existence of $G$-invariant non-degenerate bilinear forms on the Lie algebras of $G$ and $H$ and we show that there are many examples of such Lie crossed modules by using the construction of crossed modules provided by short chain complexes of vector spaces. We also generalize this construction to an arbitrary chain complex of vector spaces, of finite type. We construct two gauge-invariant actions for 2-flat and fake-flat 2-conne…
We present a family of globally regular ${\cal N}=1$ vacua in the D=4, ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity of Gates and Zwiebach. These solutions are labeled by the ratio $ξ$ of the two gauge couplings, and for $ξ=0$ they reduce to the supergravity monopole previously used for constructing the gravity dual of ${\cal N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory. For $ξ>0$ the solutions are asymptotically anti de Sitter, but with an excess of the solid angle, and they reduce exactly to anti de Sitter for $ξ=1$. Solutions with $ξ<0$ are topologically $R^1\times S^3$, and for $ξ=-2$ they become $R^1\times S^3$ geom…
The procedure of null reduction provides a concrete way of constructing field theories with Galilean invariance. We use this to examine Galilean gauge theories, viz. Galilean electrodynamics and Yang-Mills theories in spacetime dimensions 3 and 4. Different non-relativistic conformal symmetries arise in these contexts: Schr{ö}dinger symmetry in $d=3$ and Galilean conformal symmetry in $d=4$. A canonical analysis further reveals that the symmetries enhance to their infinite dimensional versions in phase space and pick up central extensions. In addition, for the Abelian theory, we discuss non-re…
We introduce and analyse a few examples of massless higher spin theories in Minkowski spacetime. They are defined in terms of master fields, i.e. fields defined in the whole phase space. More specifically we introduce the HS YM-like theories in any dimension and HS CS-like ones in any odd dimension, in both Abelian and non-Abelian cases. These theories are invariant under gauge transformations that include ordinary gauge transformations, diffeomorphisms and HS gauge transformations. They are not at first sight invariant under local Lorentz transformations, but we show how this invariance can b…
We propose a stochastic method for solving Schwinger-Dyson equations in large-N quantum field theories. Expectation values of single-trace operators are sampled by stationary probability distributions of the so-called nonlinear random processes. The set of all histories of such processes corresponds to the set of all planar diagrams in the perturbative expansions of the expectation values of singlet operators. We illustrate the method on the examples of the matrix-valued scalar field theory and the Weingarten model of random planar surfaces on the lattice. For theories with compact field varia…
Recently a new type of quadratic gauge was introduced in QCD in which the degrees of freedom are suggestive of a phase of abelian dominance. In its simplest form it is also free of Gribov ambiguity. However this gauge is not suitable for usual perturbation theory. The finite field dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformation is a method established to interrelate generating functionals for different effective versions of gauge fixed field theories. In this paper we propose a FFBRST transformation suitable for transforming the theory in the new quadratic gauge into the standard Lorenz gauge Faddeev-P…
Gauge fixing in the non-perturbative domain of non-Abelian gauge theories is obstructed by the Gribov-Singer ambiguity. To compare results from different methods it is necessary to resolve this ambiguity explicitly. Such a resolution is proposed using conditions on correlation functions for a family of non-perturbative Landau gauges. As a consequence, the various results available for correlation functions could possibly correspond to different non-perturbative Landau gauges, discriminated by an additional non-perturbative gauge parameter. The proposal, the necessary assumptions, and evidence …
Based on the most general principles of reality, gauge and reparametrization invariance, a problem of constructing the action describing dynamics of a classical color-charged particle interacting with background non-Abelian gauge and fermion fields is considered. The cases of the linear and quadratic dependence of a Lagrangian on a background fermion field are discussed. It is shown that in both cases in general there exists an infinite number of interaction terms, which should be included in the Lagrangian in question. From a simple iteration scheme, examples of the construction of the first …
The dual superconductivity of the vacuum in SU(3) gauge theory is investigated by constructing a disorder parameter which signals monopole condensation in various abelian projections and by studying numerically on the lattice its behaviour at finite temperature. We find that the vacuum is a dual superconductor with respect to each U(1) of the residual gauge group after abelian projection independently of the abelian projection chosen. Like in the SU(2) case (discussed in a companion paper) a finite size scaling analysis enables us to extract the indices of the phase transition and our analysis…
A three-generation Pati-Salam model is constructed by compactifying the heterotic string on a particular T^6/Z_6 Abelian symmetric orbifold with two discrete Wilson lines. The compactified space is taken to be the Lie algebra lattice G_2+SU(3)+SO(4). When one dimension of the SO(4) lattice is large compared to the string scale, this model reproduces many features of a 5d SO(10) grand unified theory compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold. (Of course, with two large extra dimensions we can obtain a 6d SO(10) grand unified theory.) We identify the orbifold parities and other ingredients of the orbif…
We study self-dual SU(N) gauge field configurations on the 4 torus with twisted boundary conditions, known as fractional instantons. Focusing on the minimum non-zero action case, we generalize the constant field strength solutions discovered by `t Hooft and valid for certain geometries. For the general case, we construct the vector potential and field strength in a power series expansion in a deformation parameter of the metric. The next to leading term is explicitly computed. The methodology is an extension of that used by the author for SU(2) fractional instantons and for vortices in two-dim…
