We consider U(n+1) Yang-Mills instantons on the space Σ\times S^2, where Σis a compact Riemann surface of genus g. Using an SU(2)-equivariant dimensional reduction, we show that the U(n+1) instanton equations on Σ\times S^2 are equivalent to non-Abelian vortex equations on Σ. Solutions to these equations are given by pairs (A,ϕ), where A is a gauge potential of the group U(n) and ϕis a Higgs field in the fundamental representation of the group U(n). We briefly compare this model with other non-Abelian Higgs models considered recently. Afterwards we show that for g>1, when Σ\times S^2 becomes a gravitational instanton, the non-Abelian vortex equations are the compatibility conditions of two linear equations (Lax pair) and therefore the standard methods of integrable systems can be applied for constructing their solutions.
The self-duality equations of Chern-Simons Higgs theory in a background curved spacetime are studied by making use of the U(1) gauge potential decomposition theory and $ϕ$-mapping method. The special form of the gauge potential decomposition is obtained directly from the first of the self-duality equations. Using this decomposition, a rigorous proof of magnetic flux quantization in background curved spacetime is given and the unit magnetic flux in curved spacetime is also found . Furthermore, the precise self-dual vortex equation with topological term is obtained, in which the topological term…
We analytically construct vortex solutions in the integrable sector of the extended Skyrme-Faddeev model. The solutions are holomorphic type which satisfy the zero curvature condition. For the model parameter $βe^2=1$ there is a lump solution, and for $βe^2 \neq 1$ new potentials are introduced for the several molecular-shaped solutions with half-integer or integer charges. They necessarily have infinite number of conserved currents and some of the examples are shown. By performing an annealing simulation with our potentials, we verify the existence of the solutions of the integrable sector.
The five integrable vortex equations, recently studied by Manton, are generalized to include magnetic impurities of the Tong-Wong type. Under certain conditions these generalizations remain integrable. We further set up a gauge theory with a product gauge group, two complex scalar fields and a general charge matrix. The second species of vortices, when frozen, are interpreted as the magnetic impurity for all five vortex equations. We then give a geometric compatibility condition, which enables us to remove the constant term in all the equations. This is similar to the reduction from the Taubes…
We discuss hypersurface motions in Riemannian manifolds whose normal velocity is a function of the induced hypersurface volume element and derive a second order partial differential equation for the corresponding time function $τ(x)$ at which the hypersurface passes the point $x$. Equivalently, these motions may be described in a Hamiltonian formulation as the singlet sector of certain diffeomorphism invariant field theories. At least in some (infinite class of) cases, which could be viewed as a large-volume limit of Euclidean $M$-branesmoving in an arbitrary $M+1$-dimensional Riemannian manif…
A particular dimensional reduction of SU(2N) Yang--Mills theory on $Σ\times S^2$, with $Σ$ a Riemann surface, yields an $S(U(N) \times U(N))$ gauge theory on $Σ$, with a matrix Higgs field. The SU(2N) self-dual Yang--Mills equations reduce to Bogomolny equations for vortices on $Σ$. These equations are formally integrable if $Σ$ is the hyperbolic plane, and we present a subclass of solutions.
The class of five integrable vortex equations discussed recently by Manton is extended so it includes the relativistic BPS Chern-Simons vortices, yielding a total of nineteen vortex equations. Not all the nineteen vortex equations are integrable, but four new integrable equations are discovered and we generalize them to infinitely many sets of four integrable vortex equations, with each set denoted by its integer order $n$. Their integrability is similar to the known cases, but give rise to different (generalized) Baptista geometries, where the Baptista metric is a conformal rescaling of the b…
A three-vortex system on a plane is known to be minimally superintegrable in the Liouville sense. In this work, integrable generalisations of the three-vortex planar model, which involve root vectors of simple Lie algebras, are proposed. It is shown that a generalised system, which is governed by a positive definite Hamiltonian, admits a natural integrable extension by spin degrees of freedom. It is emphasised that the n-vortex planar model and plenty of its generalisations enjoy the nonrelativistic scale invariance, which gives room for possible holographic applications.
In this paper we prequantize the moduli space of non-abelian vortices. We explicitly calculate the symplectic form arising from the $L^2$ metric and we construct a prequantum line bundle whose curvature is proportional to this symplectic form. The prequantum line bundle turns out to be Quillen's determinant line bundle with a modified Quillen metric. Next, as in the case of abelian vortices, we construct Quillen line bundles over the moduli space whose curvatures form a family of symplectic forms which are parametrised by $Ψ_0$, a section of a certain bundle.
We consider the vortex equations for a U(n) gauge field coupled to a Higgs field with values on the n times n square matrices. It is known that when these equations are defined on a compact Riemann surface, their moduli space of solutions is closely related to a moduli space of tau-stable holomorphic n-pairs on that surface. Using this fact and a local factorization result for the Higgs matrix, we show that the vortex solutions are entirely characterized by (1) the location in the surface of the zeros of the determinant of the Higgs matrix and (2) by the choice of a vortex internal structure a…
The quantized magnetic flux $Φ=-4πN\sk, N=0,\pm1,...$ of non-topological vortices in the non-relativistic Chern-Simons theory is related to the topological degree of the $S^2\to S^2$ mapping defined by lifting the problem to the Riemann spheres. Regular solutions with finite degree only arise for rational functions, whose topological degree, $N$, is the commun number of their zeros and poles on the Riemann sphere, also called their algebraic order.
We show that a 7-dimensional non-compact Ricci-flat Riemannian manifold with Riemannian holonomy G_2 can admit non-integrable G_2 structures of type R + S^2_0(R^7) + R^7 in the sense of Fernández and Gray. This relies on the construction of some G_2 solvmanifolds, whose Levi-Civita connection is known to give a parallel spinor, admitting a 2-parameter family of metric connections with non-zero skew-symmetric torsion that has parallel spinors as well. The family turns out to be a deformation of the Levi-Civita connection. This is in contrast with the case of compact scalar-flat Riemannian spin …
To the spectral curves of smooth periodic solutions of the $n$-wave equation the points with infinite energy are added. The resulting spaces are considered as generalized Riemann surfcae. In general the genus is equal to infinity, nethertheless these Riemann surfaces are similar to compact Riemann surfaces. After proving a Riemann Roch Theorem we can carry over most of the constructions of the finite gap potentials to all smooth periodic potentials. The symplectic form turns out to be closely related to Serre duality. Finally we prove that all non-linear PDE's, which belong to the focussing ca…
The Abelian Higgs model on a compact Riemann surface Σof genus g is considered. We show that for g > 1 the Bogomolny equations for multi-vortices at critical coupling can be obtained as compatibility conditions of two linear equations (Lax pair) which are written down explicitly. These vortices correspond precisely to SO(3)-symmetric Yang-Mills instantons on the (conformal) gravitational instanton Σ\times S^2 with a scalar-flat Kahler metric. Thus, the standard methods of constructing solutions and studying their properties by using Lax pairs (twistor approach, dressing method etc.) can be app…
We consider {\bf B}-model large $N$ duality for a new class of noncompact Calabi-Yau spaces modeled on the neighborhood of a ruled surface in a Calabi-Yau threefold. The closed string side of the transition is governed at genus zero by an $A_1$ Hitchin integrable system on a genus $g$ Riemann surface $Σ$. The open string side is described by a holomorphic Chern-Simons theory which reduces to a generalized matrix model in which the eigenvalues lie on the compact Riemann surface $Σ$. We show that the large $N$ planar limit of the generalized matrix model is governed by the same $A_1$ Hitchin sys…
We prove that an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety $X$ is the Jacobain of a curve if and only if there exist vectors $U\neq 0,V$ such that the roots $x_i(y)$ of the theta-functional equation $θ(Ux+Vy+Z)=0$ satisfy the equations of motion of the {\it formal infinite-dimensional Calogero-Moser system}
A new series of integrable cases of the many-body problem in many-dimensional spaces is found. That series appears as a part of the larger series of integrable problems, which are in 1-1 correspondence with Krichever-Novikov algebras of affine type (that is with pairs each one consisting of some finite root system and some Riemann surface of finite genus with two marked points).
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
Multivortex dynamics in Manton's Schroedinger--Chern--Simons variant of the Landau-Ginzburg model of thin superconductors is studied within a moduli space approximation. It is shown that the reduced flow on M_N, the N vortex moduli space, is hamiltonian with respect to ω_{L^2}, the L^2 Kaehler form on \M_N. A purely hamiltonian discussion of the conserved momenta associated with the euclidean symmetry of the model is given, and it is shown that the euclidean action on (M_N,ω_{L^2}) is not hamiltonian. It is argued that the N=3 flow is integrable in the sense of Liouville. Asymptotic formulae f…
We investigate the geometry of the moduli space of N-vortices on line bundles over a closed Riemann surface of genus g > 1, in the little explored situation where 1 =< N < g. In the regime where the area of the surface is just large enough to accommodate N vortices (which we call the dissolving limit), we describe the relation between the geometry of the moduli space and the complex geometry of the Jacobian variety of the surface. For N = 1, we show that the metric on the moduli space converges to a natural Bergman metric on the Riemann surface. When N > 1, the vortex metric typically degenera…
We consider the exotic vortex equations on compact Riemann surfaces. These generalise the well-known Jackiw-Pi and Ambjørn-Olesen vortex equations and arise as equations for Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield-like configurations in nonrelativistic Chern-Simons-matter theories. We show that (exotic) vortex solutions in $U(N)$ gauge theories with a single fundamental flavour on compact Riemann surfaces can be constructed from gauged holomorphic maps into complex space forms of dimension $N$. We conjecture, with some evidence, that all such solutions arise this way. This leads us to insights regarding …
We study the types of non-integrable $\mathrm{G}$-structures on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, geometric types admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion are characterized. 8-dimensional manifolds equipped with a $\Spin(7)$-structure play a special role. Any geometry of that type admits a unique connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. Under weak conditions on the structure group we prove that this geometry is the only one with this property. Finally, we discuss the automorphism group of a Riemannian manifold with a fixed non-integrable $\mathrm{G}$-structure.
Many properties of the moduli space of abelian vortices on a compact Riemann surface are known. For non-abelian vortices the moduli space is less well understood. Here we consider non-abelian vortices on the Riemann sphere CP^1, and we study their moduli spaces near the Bradlow limit. We give an explicit description of the moduli space as a Kahler quotient of a finite-dimensional linear space. The dimensions of some of these moduli spaces are derived. Strikingly, there exist non-abelian vortex configurations on CP^1, with non-trivial vortex number, for which the moduli space is a point. This i…
In this paper we construct new solutions of the Kahler-Yang-Mills equations, by applying dimensional reduction methods to the product of the complex projective line with a compact Riemann surface. The resulting equations, that we call gravitating vortex equations, describe Abelian vortices on the Riemann surface with back reaction of the metric. As a particular case of these gravitating vortices on the Riemann sphere we find solutions of the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, which physically correspond to Nielsen-Olesen cosmic strings in the Bogomol'nyi phase. We use this to provide a Geometric …
We elaborate a theory of giant vortices [1] based on an asymptotic expansion in inverse powers of their winding number $n$. The theory is applied to the analysis of vortex solutions in the abelian Higgs (Ginzburg-Landau) model. Specific properties of the giant vortices for charged and neutral scalar fields as well as different integrable limits of the scalar self-coupling are discussed. Asymptotic results and the finite-$n$ corrections to the vortex solutions are derived in analytic form and the convergence region of the expansion is determined.
We study several integrable Hamiltonian systems on the moduli spaces of meromorphic functions on Riemann surfaces (the Riemann sphere, a cylinder and a torus). The action-angle variables and the separated variables (in Sklyanin's sense) are related via a canonical transformation, the generating function of which is the Abel-Jacobi type integral of the Seiberg-Witten differential over the spectral curve.
We consider a four dimensional field theory with target space being CP^N which constitutes a generalization of the usual Skyrme-Faddeev model defined on CP^1. We show that it possesses an integrable sector presenting an infinite number of local conservation laws, which are associated to the hidden symmetries of the zero curvature representation of the theory in loop space. We construct an infinite class of exact solutions for that integrable submodel where the fields are meromorphic functions of the combinations (x^1+i x^2) and (x^3+x^0) of the Cartesian coordinates of four dimensional Minkows…
In this note we show that for the group G = U(N) the space of Hecke modifications of a rank N vector bundle over a Riemann surface C coincides with the moduli space of solutions of certain non-abelian vortex equations over C . Through the recent work of Kapustin and Witten this then leads to an isomorphism between the moduli space of vortices and the moduli space of singular monopoles on the product of C with a closed interval I .
We discuss vortex solutions of the abelian Higgs model in the limit of large winding number $n$. We suggest a framework where a topological quantum number $n$ is associated with a ratio of dynamical scales and a systematic expansion in inverse powers of $n$ is then derived in the spirit of effective field theory. The general asymptotic form of ${\it giant}$ vortices is obtained. For critical coupling the axially symmetric vortices become ${\it integrable}$ in the large-$n$ limit and we present the corresponding analytic solution. The method provides simple asymptotic formulae for the vortex sh…
We propose a modified version of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional admitting static solitons and determine all the Painlevé-integrable cases of its Bogomolny equations of a given class of models. Explicit solutions are determined in terms of the third Painlevé transcendents, allowing us to calculate physical quantities such as the vortex number and the vortex strength. These solutions can be interpreted as the usual Abelian-Higgs vortices on surfaces of non-constant curvature with conical singularity.
We use discrete analogs of Riemann-Hilbert problem's methods to derive the discrete Bessel kernel which describes the poissonized Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. To do this we define discrete analogs of a Riemann-Hilbert problem and of an integrable integral operator and show that computing the resolvent of a discrete integrable operator can be reduced to solving a corresponding discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. We also give an example, explicitly solvable in terms of classical special functions, when a discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem converges in a certain scaling limit to a conven…
Let L --> X be a complex line bundle over a compact connected Riemann surface. We consider the abelian vortex equations on L when the metric on the surface has finitely many point degeneracies or conical singularities and the line bundle has parabolic structure. These conditions appear naturally in the study of vortex configurations with constraints, or configurations invariant under the action of a finite group. We first show that the moduli space of singular vortex solutions is the same as in the regular case. Then we compute the total volume and total scalar curvature of the moduli space si…
Starting from the geometrical interpretation of integrable vortices on two-dimensional hyperbolic space as conical singularities, we explain how this picture can be expressed in the language of Cartan connections, and how it can be lifted to the double cover of three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space viewed as a trivial circle bundle over hyperbolic space. We show that vortex configurations on the double cover of AdS space give rise to solutions of the Dirac equation minimally coupled to the magnetic field of the vortex. After stereographic projection to (2+1)-dimensional Minkowski space we obt…
This letter describes a completely-integrable system of Yang-Mills-Higgs equations which generalizes the Hitchin equations on a Riemann surface to arbitrary k-dimensional complex manifolds. The system arises as a dimensional reduction of a set of integrable Yang-Mills equations in 4k real dimensions. Our integrable system implies other generalizations such as the Simpson equations and the non-abelian Seiberg-Witten equations. Some simple solutions in the k=2 case are described.
It is shown that both the sinh--Gordon equation and the elliptic Tzitzeica equation can be interpreted as the Taubes equation for Abelian vortices on a CMC surface embedded in $\R^{2, 1}$, or on a surface conformally related to a hyperbolic affine sphere in $\R^3$. In both cases the Higgs field and the U(1) vortex connection are constructed directly from the Riemannian data of the surface corresponding to the sinh--Gordon or the Tzitzeica equation. Radially symmetric solutions lead to vortices with a topological charge equal to one, and the connection formulae for the resulting third Painlevé …
We give a series of integrable top equations associated with the projective geometry over Z_2 as a (2^n-1)-dimensional generalisation of the 3D Euler top equations. The general solution of the (2^n-1)D top is shown to be given by an integration over a Riemann surface with genus (2^{n-1}-1)^2.
A family of systems related to a linear and bilinear evolution of roots of polynomials in the complex plane is considered. Restricted to the line, the evolution induces dynamics of the Coulomb charges in external potentials, while its fixed points correspond to equilibria of charges (or point vortices in hydrodynamics) in the plane. The construction reveals a direct connection with the theories of the Calogero-Moser systems and Lie-algebraic differential operators. A study of the equilibrium configurations amounts in a construction (bilinear hypergeometric equation) for which the classical ort…
Consider a closed analytic curve $γ$ in the complex plane and denote by > $D_+$ and $D_-$ the interior and exterior domains with respect to the curve. The point $z=0$ is assumed to be in $D_+$. Then according to Riemann theorem there exists a function $w(z)=\frac 1r z+\sum_{j=0}^\infty p_j z^{-j}$, mapping $D_-$ to the exterior of the unit disk $\{w\in C|| w | >1\}$. It is follow from [arXiv : hep-th /0005259] that this function is described by formula $\log w=\log z-\partial_{t_0} (\frac 12\partial_{t_0}+\sum\limits_{k\geqslant 1}\frac{z^{-k}}{k} \partial_{t_k})v$, where $v=v(t_0, t_1, \bar t…
Localized soliton-like solutions to a $(2+1)$-dimensional hydro-dynamical evolution equation are studied numerically. The equation is so-called Williams-Yamagata-Flierl equation, which governs geostrophic fluid in a certain parameter range. Although the equation does not have an integrable structure in the ordinary sense, we find there exist shape-keeping solutions with very long life in a special background flow and an initial condition. The stability of the localization at the fusion process of two soliton-like objects is also investigated. As for the indicator of the long-term stability of …
The Abelian Chern-Simons Gauge Field Theory in 2+1 dimensions and its relation with holomorphic Burgers' Hierarchy is considered. It is shown that the relation between complex potential and the complex gauge field as in incompressible and irrotational hydrodynamics, has meaning of the analytic Cole-Hopf transformation, linearizing the Burgers Hierarchy in terms of the holomorphic Schrödinger Hierarchy. Then the motion of planar vortices in Chern-Simons theory, appearing as pole singularities of the gauge field, corresponds to motion of zeroes of the hierarchy. Using boost transformations of th…
