The spectral density for random matrix $β$ ensembles can be written in terms of the average of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial raised to the power of $β$, which for even $β$ is a polynomial of degree $β(N-1)$. In the cases of the classical Gaussian, Laguerre, and Jacobi weights, we show that this polynomial, and moreover the spectral density itself, can be characterised as the solution of a linear differential equation of degree $β+1$. This equation, and its companion for the resolvent, are given explicitly for $β=2$ and $4$ for all three classical cases, and also for $β=6$ in the Gaussian case. Known dualities for the spectral moments relating $β$ to $4/β$ then imply corresponding differential equations in the case $β=1$, and for the Gaussian ensemble, the case $β=2/3$. We apply the differential equations to give a systematic derivation of recurrences satisfied by the spectral moments and by the coefficients of their $1/N$ expansions, along with first-order differential equations for the coefficients of the $1/N$ expansions of the corresponding resolvents. We also present the form of the differential equations when scaled at the hard or soft edges.
We obtain the recursive identities for the joint moments of the traces of the powers of the resolvent for Gaussian ensembles of random matrices at the soft and hard edges of the spectrum. We also discuss the possible ways to extend these results to the non-Gaussian case.
Given a symmetric, semi-bounded, second order elliptic differential operator on a bounded domain with $C^{1,1}$ boundary, we provide a Krein-type formula for the resolvent difference between its Friedrichs extension and an arbitrary self-adjoint one.
We study the spectral properties of the dilute Wigner random real symmetric n-dimensional matrices H such that the entries H(i,j) take zero value with probability 1-p/n. We prove that under rather general conditions on the probability distribution of H(i,j) the semicircle law is valid for the dilute Wigner ensemble in the limit of infinite n and p. In the second part of the paper we study the leading term of the correlation function of the resolvent G(z) of H with large enough Im z in the limit of infinite n and p such that 3/5 log n <log p < log n. We show that this leading term, when conside…
We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.
We consider an arbitrary metric graph, to which we glue another graph with edges of lengths proportional to $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small positive parameter. On such graph, we consider a general self-adjoint second order differential operator $\mathcal{H}_\varepsilon$ with varying coefficients subject to general vertex conditions; all coefficients in differential expression and vertex conditions are supposed to be analytic in $\varepsilon$. We introduce a special operator on a certain graph obtained by rescaling the aforementioned small edges and assume that it has no embedded …
The loop equation formalism is used to compute the $1/N$ expansion of the resolvent for the Gaussian $β$ ensemble up to and including the term at $O(N^{-6})$. This allows the moments of the eigenvalue density to be computed up to and including the 12-th power and the smoothed density to be expanded up to and including the term at $O(N^{-6})$. The latter contain non-integrable singularities at the endpoints of the support --- we show how to nonetheless make sense of the average of a sufficiently smooth linear statistic. At the special couplings $β= 1$, $2$ and $4$ there are characterisations of…
We construct a hierarchy of loop equations for invariant circular ensembles. These are valid for general classes of potentials and for arbitrary inverse temperatures $ {\rm Re}\,β>0 $ and number of eigenvalues $ N $. Using matching arguments for the resolvent functions of linear statistics $ f(ζ)=(ζ+z)/(ζ-z) $ in a particular asymptotic regime, the global regime, we systematically develop the corresponding large $ N $ expansion and apply this solution scheme to the Dyson circular ensemble. Currently we can compute the second resolvent function to ten orders in this expansion and also its gener…
The $β$-ensembles of random matrix theory with classical weights have many special properties. One is that the loop equations specifying the resolvent and corresponding multipoint correlators permit a derivation at general order of the correlator via Aomoto's method from the theory of the Selberg integral. We use Aomoto's method to derive the full hierarchy of loop equations for Laguerre and Jacobi $β$ ensembles, and use these to systematically construct the explicit form of the $1/N$ expansion at low orders. This allows us to give the explicit form of corrections to the global density, and al…
We consider self-adjoint realizations of a second-order elliptic differential expression on ${\mathbb R}^n$ with singular interactions of $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-type supported on a compact closed smooth hypersurface in ${\mathbb R}^n$. In our main results we prove spectral asymptotics formulae with refined remainder estimates for the singular values of the resolvent difference between the standard self-adjoint realizations and the operators with a $δ$ and $δ^\prime$-interaction, respectively. Our technique makes use of general pseudodifferential methods, classical results on spectral asymptotics o…
We derive expansions of the resolvent Rn(x;y;t)=(Qn(x;t)Pn(y;t)-Qn(y;t)Pn(x;t))/(x-y) of the Hermite kernel Kn at the edge of the spectrum of the finite n Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUEn) and the finite n expansion of Qn(x;t) and Pn(x;t). Using these large n expansions, we give another proof of the derivation of an Edgeworth type theorem for the largest eigenvalue distribution function of GUEn. We conclude with a brief discussion on the derivation of the probability distribution function of the corresponding largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOEn) and Gaussian Symplectic …
The K-matrix, also known as the "Wigner reaction matrix" in nuclear scattering or "impedance matrix" in the electromagnetic wave scattering, is given essentially by an M x M diagonal block of the resolvent (E-H)^{-1} of a Hamiltonian H. For chaotic quantum systems the Hamiltonian H can be modelled by random Hermitian N x N matrices taken from invariant ensembles with the Dyson symmetry index beta=1,2,4. For beta=2 we prove by explicit calculation a universality conjecture by P. Brouwer which is equivalent to the claim that the probability distribution of K, for a broad class of invariant ensem…
We consider the resolvent of a system of first order differential operators with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity, and can take even irrational values. The consequences for the pole structure of the corresponding $ζ$ and $η$-functions are also discussed.
It is shown that certain ensembles of random matrices with entries that vanish outside a band around the diagonal satisfy a localization condition on the resolvent which guarantees that eigenvectors have strong overlap with a vanishing fraction of standard basis vectors, provided the band width $W$ raised to a power $μ$ remains smaller than the matrix size $N$. For a Gaussian band ensemble, with matrix elements given by i.i.d. centered Gaussians within a band of width $W$, the estimate $μ\le 8$ holds.
We give an overview of the recursive characterisations of random matrix ensembles that are currently at the forefront of random matrix theory by way of studying two classes of ensembles using two different types of recursive schemes: Established theory on Selberg correlation integrals is used to derive linear differential equations on the eigenvalue densities and resolvents of the classical matrix ensembles, which lead to $1$-point recursions, understood to be analogues of the Harer-Zagier recursion, for the expansion coefficients of the associated $1$-point cumulants, while loop equation anal…
An attempt is made to describe random matrix ensembles with unitary invariance of measure (UE) in a unified way, using a combination of Tracy-Widom (TW) and Adler-Shiota-Van Moerbeke (ASvM) approaches to derivation of partial differential equations (PDE) for spectral gap probabilities. First, general 3-term recurrence relations for UE restricted to subsets of real line, or, in other words, for functions in the resolvent kernel, are obtained. Using them, simple universal relations between all TW dependent variables and one-dimensional Toda lattice $τ$-functions are found. A universal system of …

We study the beta-ensemble that represents conformal blocks of Liouville theory on the sphere. This quantity is related through AGT conjecture to the Nekrasov instanton partition function of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SU(2) gauge theory with four flavors. We focus on the large N limit, equivalent to the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit where one of the Omega-background deformation parameters is vanishing. A quantized Seiberg-Witten differential form is defined perturbatively in h-bar as the singular part of the beta-ensemble resolvent. Using the Dyson collective field action, we show that the free energy ob…
We consider the fractional powers of singular (point-like) perturbations of the Laplacian, and the singular perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian, and we compare such two constructions focusing on their perturbative structure for resolvents and on the local singularity structure of their domains. In application to the linear and non-linear Schrödinger equations for the corresponding operators we outline a programme of relevant questions that deserve being investigated.
The classical concept of $Q$-functions associated to symmetric and selfadjoint operators due to M.G. Krein and H. Langer is extended in such a way that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map in the theory of elliptic differential equations can be interpreted as a generalized $Q$-function. For couplings of uniformly elliptic second order differential expression on bounded and unbounded domains explicit Krein type formulas for the difference of the resolvents and trace formulas in an $H^2$-framework are obtained.
We study the spectral properties of matrices of long-range percolation model. These are N\times N random real symmetric matrices H=\{H(i,j)\}_{i,j} whose elements are independent random variables taking zero value with probability 1-ψ((i-j)/b), b\in \mathbb{R}^{+}, where $ψ$ is an even positive function with ψ(t)\le{1} and vanishing at infinity. We study the resolvent G(z)=(H-z)^{-1}, Imz\neq{0} in the limit N,b\to\infty, b=O(N^α), 1/3<α<1 and obtain the explicit expression T(z_{1},z_{2}) for the leading term of the correlation function of the normalized trace of resolvent g_{N,b}(z)=N^{-1}Tr …
We consider two classical ensembles of the random matrix theory: the Wigner matrices and sample covariance matrices, and prove Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics under rather weak (comparing with results known before) conditions on the number of derivatives of the test functions and also on the number of the entries moments. Moreover, we develop a universal method which allows one to obtain automatically the bounds for the variance of differentiable test functions, if there is a bound for the variance of the trace of the resolvent of random matrix. The method is applicable …
We study the ultrametric random matrix ensemble, whose independent entries have variances decaying exponentially in the metric induced by the tree topology on $\mathbb{N}$, and map out the entire localization regime in terms of eigenfunction localization and Poisson statistics. Our results complement existing works on complete delocalization and random matrix universality, thereby proving the existence of a phase transition in this model. In the simpler case of the Rosenzweig-Porter model, the analysis yields a complete characterization of the transition in the local statistics. The proofs are…
Paper deals with the singular Sturm-Liouville expressions $$l(y) = -(py')' + qy$$ on a finite interval with coefficients $$q = Q', \quad 1/p, Q/p, Q^2/p \in L_1,$$ where derivative of the function $Q$ is understood in the sense of distributions. Due to a new regularization corresponding operators are correctly defined as quasi-differential. Their resolvent approximation is investigated and all self-adjoint and maximal dissipative extensions and generalized resolvents are described in terms of homogeneous boundary conditions of the canonic form. Some results are new for the case $p(t)\equiv 1$ …
The distributions of $ N $-particle systems of Gaussian unitary ensembles converge to Sine$_2$ point processes under bulk-scaling limits. These scalings are parameterized by a macro-position $ θ$ in the support of the semicircle distribution. The limits are always Sine$_{2}$ point processes and independent of the macro-position $ θ$ up to the dilations of determinantal kernels. We prove a dynamical counter part of this fact. We prove that the solution of the $ N $-particle systems given by stochastic differential equations (SDEs) converges to the solution of the infinite-dimensional Dyson mode…
In this paper we propose a new method for studying spectral properties of the non-hermitian random matrix ensembles. Alike complex Green's function encodes, via discontinuities, the real spectrum of the hermitian ensembles, the proposed here quaternion extension of the Green's function leads directly to complex spectrum in case of non-hermitian ensembles and encodes additionally some spectral properties of the eigenvectors. The standard two-by-two matrix representation of the quaternions leads to generalization of so-called matrix-valued resolvent, proposed recently in the context of diagramma…
