In this paper, an explicit construction of a countable parafree Lie algebra over $\mathbb Z/2$ with nonzero second homology is given. It is also shown that the cohomological dimension of the pronilpotent completion of a free noncyclic finitely generated Lie algebra over $\mathbb Z$ is greater than two. Moreover, it is proven that there exists a countable parafree group with nontrivial $H_2$.
We develop a version of the Bass-Serre theory for Lie algebras (over a field $k$) via a homological approach. We define the notion of fundamental Lie algebra of a graph of Lie algebras and show that this construction yields Mayer-Vietoris sequences. We extend some well known results in group theory to $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras: for example, we show that one relator $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras are iterated HNN extensions with free bases which can be used for cohomology computations and apply the Mayer-Vietoris sequence to give some results about coherence of Lie algebras.
We consider homological finiteness properties $FP_n$ of certain $\mathbb{N}$-graded Lie algebras. After proving some general results, see Theorem A, Corollary B and Corollary C, we concentrate on a family that can be considered as the Lie algebra version of the generalized Bestvina-Brady groups associated to a graph $Γ$. We prove that the homological finiteness properties of these Lie algebras can be determined in terms of the graph in the same way as in the group case. In the last version we have corrected some missprints, in particular the statement of Theorem D (from $n-1$-acyclicity to $n-…
We generalise notions of Gorenstein homological algebra for rings to the context of arbitrary abelian categories. The results are strongest for module categories of rngs with enough idempotents. We also reformulate the notion of Frobenius extensions of noetherian rings into a setting which allows for direct generalisation to arbitrary abelian categories. The abstract theory is then applied to the BGG category O for Lie superalgebras, which can now be seen as a "Frobenius extension" of the corresponding category for the underlying Lie algebra and is therefore "Gorenstein". In particular we obta…
We show Lie algebra versions of some results on homological finiteness properties of subdirect products of groups, including a version of the 1-2-3 Theorem.

We introduce the notion of virtual endomorphisms of Lie algebras and use it as an approach for constructing self-similarity of Lie algebras. This is done in particular for a class of metabelian Lie algebras having homological type F Pn, which are variants of lamp-lighter groups. We establish several criteria when the existence of virtual endomorphism implies a self-similar Lie structure. Furthermore, we prove that the classical Lie algebra sln(k), where char(k) does not divide n affords non-trivial faithful self-similarity.
We study the analogue of Sidki's weak commutativity construction, defined originally for groups, in the category of Lie algebras. This is the quotient $χ(\mathfrak{g})$ of the Lie algebra freely generated by two isomorphic copies $\mathfrak{g}$ and $\mathfrak{g}^ψ$ of a fixed Lie algebra by the ideal generated by the brackets $[x,x^ψ]$, for all $x$. We exhibit an abelian ideal of $χ(\mathfrak{g})$ whose associated quotient is a subdirect sum in $\mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{g} \oplus \mathfrak{g}$ and we give conditions for this ideal to be finite dimensional. We show that $χ(\mathfrak{g})$ h…
We study the degeneration relations on the varieties of associative and Lie algebra structures on a fixed finite dimensional vector space and give a description of them in terms of Gerstenhaber formal deformations. We use this result to show how the orbit closure of the $3$-dimensional Lie algebras can be determined using homological algebra. For the case of finite dimensional associative algebras, we prove that the $N$-Koszul property is preserved under the degeneration relation for all $N\geq2$.
We provide a short alternative homological argument showing that any invariant symmetric bilinear form on simple modular generalized Jacobson-Witt algebras vanishes, and outline another, deformation-theoretic one, allowing to describe such forms on simple modular Lie algebras of contact type.
For the exceptional finite-dimensional modular Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{g}(A)$ with indecomposable Cartan matrix $A$, and their simple subquotients, we computed non-isomorphic Lie superalgebras constituting the homologies of the odd elements with zero square. These homologies are~key ingredients in the Duflo--Serganova approach to the representation theory. There were two definitions of defect of Lie superalgebras in the literature with different ranges of application. We suggest a third definition and an easy-to-use way to find its value. In positive characteristic, we found out one more …
Let $X$ be a simply connected closed oriented manifold of rationally elliptic homotopy type. We prove that the string topology bracket on the $S^1$-equivariant homology $\overline{H}_{\ast}^{S^1}(\mathcal{L}X,\mathbb{Q}) $ of the free loop space of $X$ preserves the Hodge decomposition of $\overline{H}_{\ast}^{S^1}(\mathcal{L}X,\mathbb{Q}) $ , making it a bigraded Lie algebra. We deduce this result from a general theorem on derived Poisson structures on the universal enveloping algebras of homologically nilpotent finite-dimensional DG Lie algebras. Our theorem settles a conjecture proposed in …
