In this review we discuss recent advances in the computation of one-point functions in defect conformal field theories with holographic duals. We briefly review the appearance of integrable spin chains in N=4 super Yang--Mills theory and reformulate the problem of computing one-point functions to determining overlaps between Bethe states and a Matrix Product State. We will then demonstrate how these overlaps can be computed by determinant formulas. This work is based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop 2018. To appear in a special issue of J. Phys. A.
We study the matrix product state which appears as the boundary state of the AdS/dCFT set-up where a probe D7 brane wraps two two-spheres stabilized by fluxes. The matrix product state plays a dual role, on one hand acting as a tool for computing one-point functions in a domain wall version of N=4 SYM and on the other hand acting as the initial state in the study of quantum quenches of the Heisenberg spin chain. We derive a number of selection rules for the overlaps between the matrix product state and the eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and in particular demonstrate that the matrix p…
We consider the expectation value of Wilson lines in two defect versions of N = 4 SYM, both with supersymmetry completely broken, where one is described in terms of an integrable boundary state, the other one not. For both cases, imposing a certain double scaling limit, we find agreement to two leading orders between the expectation values calculated from respectively the field theory and the string theory side of the AdS/dCFT correspondence.
We determine in a closed form all scalar one-point functions of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of flux which amounts to calculating the overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the integrable SO(6) spin chain and a certain matrix product state of bond dimension k. In particular, we show that the matrix product state is annihilated by all the parity odd charges of the spin chain which has recently been suggested as the criterion for such a state to correspond to an integrable initial state. Finally, we discuss the properties of the analogous matrix product state f…
We formulate and close the boundary state bootstrap for factorizing K-matrices in AdS/CFT. We found that there are no boundary degrees of freedom in the boundary bound states, merely the boundary parameters are shifted. We use this family of boundary bound states to describe the D3-D5 system for higher dimensional matrix product states and provide their asymptotic overlap formulas. In doing so we generalize the nesting for overlaps of matrix product states and Bethe states.
The encoding of all possible sets of Bethe equations for a spin chain with SU(N|M) symmetry into a QQ-system calls for an expression of spin chain overlaps entirely in terms of Q-functions. We take a significant step towards deriving such a universal formula in the case of overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and integrable boundary states, of relevance for AdS/dCFT, by determining the transformation properties of the overlaps under fermionic as well as bosonic dualities which allows us to move between any two descriptions of the spin chain encoded in the QQ-system. An important part of our anal…
We consider different supersymmetric mixed boundary conditions for scalar and fermionic fields in $AdS_2$, searching for the dual description of a family of interpolating Wilson Loops in ABJM theory. The family, which interpolates between the bosonic 1/6 BPS loop and the 1/2 BPS loop, can be thought of as an exact marginal deformation in a defect CFT$_1$. Confronting this property against holographic correlators and vacuum energy corrections singles out a particular boundary condition which we propose as dual to the interpolating family of Wilson loops.
We propose a closed formula for the tree-level one-point functions of non-protected operators belonging to an SU(3) sub-sector of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with background gauge field flux, k, valid for k=2. The formula passes a number of non-trivial analytical and numerical tests. Our proposal is based on expressing the one-point functions as an overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the SU(3) spin chain and a certain matrix product state, deriving various factorization properties of the Gaudin norm and performing explicit computations for shorter spin chains. As its …
We initiate the calculation of quantum corrections to Wilson loops in a class of four-dimensional defect conformal field theories with vacuum expectation values based on N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Concretely, we consider an infinite straight Wilson line, obtaining explicit results for the one-loop correction to its expectation value in the large-N limit. This allows us to extract the particle-interface potential of the theory. In a further double-scaling limit, we compare our results to those of a previous calculation in the dual string-theory set-up consisting of a D5-D3 probe-brane system …
We take the first step in extending the integrability approach to one-point functions in AdS/dCFT to higher loop orders. More precisely, we argue that the formula encoding all tree-level one-point functions of SU(2) operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory, dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, has a natural asymptotic generalization to higher loop orders. The asymptotic formula correctly encodes the information about the one-loop correction to the one-point functions of non-protected operators once dressed by a simple flux-dependent factor, as we demonstrate by an explicit …
Integrable boundary states can be built up from pair annihilation amplitudes called $K$-matrices. These amplitudes are related to mirror reflections and they both satisfy Yang Baxter equations, which can be twisted or untwisted. We relate these two notions to each other and show how they are fixed by the unbroken symmetries, which, together with the full symmetry, must form symmetric pairs. We show that the twisted nature of the $K$-matrix implies specific selection rules for the overlaps. If the Bethe roots of the same type are paired the overlap is called chiral, otherwise it is achiral and …
We further study the correspondence between open semiclassical strings and long defect operators which is discussed in our previous work [hep-th/0410139]. We give an interpretation of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of SO(6)-> SO(3)_H x SO(3)_V from the viewpoint of the Riemann surface by following the argument of Minahan. Then we use the concrete form of the resolvent for a single cut solution and compute the anomalous dimension of operators dual to an open pulsating string at three-loop level. In the string side we obtain the energy of the open pulsating string solution by semiclassical an…
We consider defect composite operators in a defect superconformal field theory obtained by inserting an AdS_4 x S^2-brane in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. The one-loop dilatation operator for the scalar sector is represented by an integrable open spin chain. We give a description to construct coherent states for the open spin chain. Then, by evaluating the expectation value of the Hamiltonian with the coherent states in a long operator limit, a Landau-Lifshitz type of sigma model action is obtained. This action is also derived from the string action and hence we find a complete agreement in both…
We consider a non-supersymmetric domain-wall version of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory where five out of the six scalar fields have non-zero classical values on one side of a wall of codimension one. The classical fields have commutators which constitute an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(5)$ leading to a highly non-trivial mixing between color and flavor components of the quantum fields. Making use of fuzzy spherical harmonics on $S^4$, we explicitly solve the mixing problem and derive not only the spectrum of excitations at the quantum level but also the propagator…
We consider open spinning string solutions on an AdS_4 x S^2-brane (D5-brane) in the bulk AdS_5 x S^5 background. By taking account of the breaking of SO(6)_R to SO(3)_H x SO(3)_V due to the presence of the AdS-brane, the open rotating string ansatz is discussed. We construct the elliptic folded/circular open string solutions in the SU(2) and the SL(2) sectors, so that they satisfy the appropriate boundary conditions. On the other hand, in the SU(2) sector of the gauge theory, we compute the matrix of anomalous dimension of the defect operator, which turns out to be the Hamiltonian of an open …
One-point functions of certain non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of world volume flux can be expressed as overlaps between Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and a matrix product state. We present a closed expression of determinant form for these one-point functions, valid for any value of k. The determinant formula factorizes into the k=2 result times a k-dependent prefactor. Making use of the transfer matrix of the Heisenberg spin chain we recursively relate the matrix product state for higher even and odd k to the …
The previous studies of the island and double holography mainly focus on codimension-one branes. This paper explores the island on the codimension-two brane in AdS/dCFT. The codimension-two brane is closely related to conical singularity, which is very different from the codimension-one brane. We analyze the mass spectrum of gravitons on the codimension-two brane and find that the larger the brane tension is, the smaller the gravitational mass is. The massless mode is forbidden by either the boundary or normalization conditions. We prove that the first massive gravitational mode is located on …
We build the framework for performing loop computations in the defect version of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory which is dual to the probe D5-D3 brane system with background gauge-field flux. In this dCFT, a codimension-one defect separates two regions of space-time with different ranks of the gauge group and three of the scalar fields acquire non-vanishing and space-time-dependent vacuum expectation values. The latter leads to a highly non-trivial mass mixing problem between different colour and flavour components, which we solve using fuzzy-sphere coordinates. Furthermore, the resulting space-t…
Via a challenging field-theory computation, we confirm a supergravity prediction for the non-supersymmetric D3-D7 probe-brane system with probe geometry AdS_4 x S^2 x S^2, stabilized by fluxes. Supergravity predicts, in a certain double-scaling limit, the value of the one-point functions of chiral primaries of the dual defect version of N=4 SYM theory, where the fluxes translate into SO(3) x SO(3)-symmetric, Lie-algebra-valued vacuum expectation values for all six scalar fields. Using a generalization of the technique based on fuzzy spherical harmonics developed for the related D3-D5 probe-bra…
The 1/2-BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is an important and well-studied example of conformal defect. In particular, much work has been done for the correlation functions of operator insertions on the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation. In this paper, we extend such analyses to Wilson loops in the large-rank symmetric and antisymmetric representations, which correspond to probe D3 and D5 branes with $AdS_2 \times S^2$ and $AdS_2 \times S^4$ worldvolume geometries, ending at the $AdS_5$ boundary along a one-dimensional contour. We first compute the…
We calculate the leading contributions to the connected two-point functions of protected scalar operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory which is dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with k units of background gauge field flux. This involves several types of two-point functions which are vanishing in the theory without the defect, such as two-point functions of operators of unequal conformal dimension. We furthermore exploit the operator product expansion (OPE) and the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which form the basis of the boundary conformal bootstrap equations, to extract con…
We consider generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which probe branes are embedded in gravity backgrounds dual to either conformal or confining gauge theories. These correspond to defect conformal field theories (dCFT) or QCD-like theories with fundamental matter, respectively. Computing the quark condensate and the meson spectrum for a non-supersymmetric QCD-like theory from supergravity, we find spontaneous U(1) chiral symmetry breaking as well as the associated Goldstone boson. For another example at finite temperature, we observe a phase transition corresponding to a geometrical …
We consider a particular set of two-point functions in the setting of N = 4 SYM with a defect, dual to the fuzzy-funnel solution for the probe D5-D3-brane system. The two-point functions in focus involve a single trace operator in the SU(2)-subsector of arbitrary length and a length-two operator built out of any scalars. By interpreting the contractions as a spin-chain operator, simple expressions were found for the leading contribution to the two-point functions, mapping them to earlier known formulas for the one-point functions in this setting.
We analyze the defect scaling Lee-Yang model from the perturbed defect conformal field theory (DCFT) point of view. First the defect Lee-Yang model is solved by calculating its structure constants from the sewing relations. Integrable defect perturbations are identified in conformal defect perturbation theory. Then pure defect flows connecting integrable conformal defects are described. We develop a defect truncated conformal space approach (DTCSA) to analyze the one parameter family of integrable massive perturbations in finite volume numerically. Fusing the integrable defect to an integrable…
The AdS/dCFT correspondence is used to show that a planar q-dimensional superconformal CFT defect expands, under the addition of electric charge and angular momentum, to a supersymmetric higher-dimensional defect of geometry R^q x C, where C is an arbitrary curve. The dual string theory process is the expansion of D-branes and fundamental strings into a supertube in an AdS background.
We study tree level one-point functions of non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT, based on N=4 SYM, which is dual to the SO(5) symmetric D3-D7 probe brane system with non-vanishing instanton number. Whereas symmetries prevent operators from the SU(2) and SU(3) sub-sectors from having non-vanishing one-point functions, more general scalar conformal operators, which in particular constitute Bethe eigenstates of the integrable SO(6) spin chain, are allowed to have non-trivial one-point functions. For a series of operators with a small number of excitations we find closed expressions in…
A D3-D5 intersection gives rise to a defect CFT, wherein the rank of the gauge group jumps by k units across a domain wall. The one-point functions of local operators in this set-up map to overlaps between on-shell Bethe states in the underlying spin chain and a boundary state representing the D5 brane. Focussing on the k=1 case, we extend the construction to gluonic and fermionic sectors, which was prohibitively difficult to achieve for k>1. As a byproduct, we test an all-loop proposal for the one-point functions in the su(2) sector at the half-wrapping order of perturbation theory.
In six- and seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, each scalar potential has one supersymmetric and one non-supersymmetric fixed points. The non-supersymmetric $AdS_7$ fixed point is perturbatively unstable. On the other hand, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ fixed point is known to be perturbatively stable. In this note we examine the newly proposed non-perturbative decay channel, called brane-jet instabilities of the $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ vacua. We find that when they are uplifted to massive type IIA and eleven-dimensional supergravity, respectively, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ va…
We analyse the leading logarithmic singularities in direct and crossed channel limit of the four-point functions in dilaton-axion sector of type IIB supergravity on $AdS_{5}$ in AdS/CFT correspondence. Logarithms do not cancel in the full correlator in both channels.
We show that AdS two-point functions can be obtained by connecting two points in the interior of AdS space with one point on its boundary by a dual pair of Dobrev's boundary-to-bulk intertwiners and integrating over the boundary point.
Using the H3+-Liouville relation, I explicitly compute the boundary three-point function on AdS2 D-branes in H3+, and check that it exhibits the expected symmetry properties and has the correct geometrical limit. I then find a simple relation between this boundary three-point function and certain fusing matrix elements, which suggests a formal correspondence between the AdS2 D-branes and discrete representations of the symmetry group. Concluding speculations deal with the fuzzy geometry of AdS2 D-branes, strings in the Minkowskian AdS3, and the hypothetical existence of new D-branes in H3+.
In this paper we study the three-point correlation functions of two scalar operators with large conformal dimensions and the R-current or stress-energy tensor at strong coupling with the help of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. The scalar operators are dual to semiclassical strings in AdS_4 x CP^3, which are point-like in AdS. We establish thorough concordance between string theory results at large coupling constant and general predictions coming from Ward identities in the dual three-dimensional superconformal gauge theory.
We consider the D=4, N=8 supergravity on AdS2 x S2 space. We obtain the truncated Lagrangian for the bosonic chiral primary fields, and compute the tree level three-point correlation functions.
We study contact four-point amplitudes in the spinor-helicity formalism in anti-de Sitter space. We find that these amplitudes can be brought to an especially simple form, which we call canonical. Next, we classify consistent contact amplitudes by requiring correct transformation properties with respect to the AdS isometry algebra. Finally, we establish a connection between the canonical form of AdS amplitudes and scalar multi-trace conformal primaries in flat space.
We present the tree-level five-point amplitude of the lowest KK mode of SYM on AdS$_5$$\times$S$^3$, dual to the correlator of the flavor current multiplet in the dual 4d ${\cal N}=2$ SCFT. Its color and kinematical structure is particularly simple and resembles that of the flat-space gluon amplitude.
We reconsider the problem of determining the semiclassical 3-point function in the Euclidean AdS_3 model. Exploiting the affine symmetry of the model we use solutions of the classical Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equation to compute the saddle point of the action in the presence of three vertex operators. This alternative derivation reproduces the "heavy charge" classical limit of the quantum 3-point correlator. It is different from the recently proposed expression obtained by generalised Pohlmeyer reduction in AdS_2
Recently there has been progress on the computation of two- and three-point correlation functions with two "heavy" states via semiclassical methods. We extend this analysis to the case of AdS_5 \times T^(1,1), and examine the suggested procedure for the case of several simple string solutions. By making use of AdS/CFT duality, we derive the relevant correlation functions of operators belonging to the dual gauge theory.
We consider Toda field theories in a classical Euclidean $AdS_2$ background. We compute the four-point functions of boundary operators in the $a_1$, $a_2$ and $b_2$ Toda field theories. They take the same form as the four-point functions of generators in the corresponding $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. Therefore we conjecture that the boundary operators are in one-to-one correspondence with the generators in the $\mathcal{W}$-algebras.

We extend this analysis to the case of AdS_4 x CP^3, and examine the suggested procedure for the case of several simple string solutions. By making use of AdS/CFT duality, we derive the relevant correlation functions of operators belonging to the dual N=6 Chern-Simons gauge theory.
We use the correspondence between scalar field theory on AdS and induced conformal field theory on its boundary to calculate correlation functions of logarithmic conformal field theory in arbitrary dimensions. Our calculations utilize the newly proposed method of nilpotent weights. We derive expressions for the four point function assuming a generic interaction term
The two-point Green function of a local operator in CFT corresponding to a massive symmetric tensor field on the AdS background is computed in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The obtained two-point function is shown to coincide with the two-point function of the graviton in the limit when the mass vanishes.
We construct the operator product expansions (OPE) of the chiral primary operators in the worldsheet theory for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. As an interesting application, we will use the worldsheet OPEs to derive a recursion relation for a particular class of extremal p-point correlators on the sphere. We compare our result with the corresponding recursion relation previously found in the symmetric orbifold theory on the boundary of AdS_3.
We derive the 3-point correlation function between two giant magnons heavy string states and the light dilaton operator with zero momentum in the η-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 valid for any J_1 and ηin the semiclassical limit. We show that this result satisfies a consistency relation between the 3-point correlation function and the conformal dimension of the giant magnon. We also provide a leading finite J_1 correction explicitly.
In this paper we study the chiral symmetry breaking in the hard wall AdS/QCD model. We solve the equations of motion up to the second order at large momentum and obtain the first few terms in the expansion of the "left-right" correlator, which is the measure of symmetry breaking. We study the dependence on AdS radius to get the result as the series in t'Hooft constant.
We study the four--point function of chiral primaries corresponding to the dilaton--axion sector in supergravity in the $AdS_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence. We find relations between some of the supergravity graphs and compute their leading singularities. We discuss the issue of logarithmic singularities and their significance for the OPE structure of the CFT.
Following the recent advances in the holographic calculation of n-point correlation functions with two "heavy" (with large quantum numbers) states at strong coupling, we extend these findings by computing specific four-point correlators of four heavy BMN operators in N=4 SYM.
In the first part of the paper, we discuss different versions of the AdS/CFT dictionary out of equilibrium. We show that the Skenderis - van Rees prescription and the "extrapolate" dictionary are equivalent at the level of "in-in" two point functions of free scalar fields in arbitrary asymptotically AdS spacetimes. In the second part of the paper, we calculate two point correlation functions in dynamical spacetimes using the "extrapolate" dictionary. These calculations are performed for conformally coupled scalar fields in examples of spacetimes undergoing gravitational collapse, the AdS$_2$-V…
A new method is discussed which vastly simplifies one of the two integrals over AdS(d+1) required to compute exchange graphs for 4-point functions of scalars in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The explicit form of the bulk-to-bulk propagator is not required. Previous results for scalar, gauge boson and graviton exchange are reproduced, and new results are given for massive vectors. It is found that precisely for the cases that occur in the AdS(5) X S(5) compactification of Type IIB supergravity, the exchange diagrams reduce to a finite sum of graphs with quartic scalar vertices. The analogous inte…
We consider an exremal three-point correlator of three heavy vertex operators for the circular winding string state with one large spin and one windining number in AdS5 and one large spin and one winding number in S5. We use a Schwarz-Christoffel transformation to compute semiclassically the extremal three-point correlator on a stationary string trajectory which is mapped to the complex plane with three punctures. It becomes a 4d conformal invariant three-point correlator on the boundary. We discuss the marginality condition of vertex operator.
In this note we explicitly compute the graviton exchange graph for scalar fields with arbitrary conformal dimension Δin arbitrary spacetime dimension d. This results in an analytical function in Δas well as in d.
Recently, exact agreement has been found between bulk and boundary three-point functions in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with NSNS fluxes. This represents a non-trivial check of AdS/CFT correspondence beyond the supergravity approximation as it corresponds to an exact worldsheet computation. When taking a closer look at this computation, one notices that a crucial point for the bulk-boundary agreement to hold is an intriguing mutual cancellation between worldsheet contributions corresponding to the AdS_3 and to the S^3 pieces of the geometry, what results in a simple factorized form for the final three-p…
One of the most important problems in any conformal field theory is the calculation of three-point functions of primary operators. In this paper we provide explicit examples of correlators with two scalar operators in $\,{\cal N}=4$ super-Yang--Mills theory at large $N$, corresponding to pulsating semiclassical strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$, and an operator with small quantum numbers at strong coupling.
