We consider a non-supersymmetric domain-wall version of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory where five out of the six scalar fields have non-zero classical values on one side of a wall of codimension one. The classical fields have commutators which constitute an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(5)$ leading to a highly non-trivial mixing between color and flavor components of the quantum fields. Making use of fuzzy spherical harmonics on $S^4$, we explicitly solve the mixing problem and derive not only the spectrum of excitations at the quantum level but also the propagators of the original fields needed for perturbative quantum computations. As an application, we derive the one-loop one-point function of a chiral primary and find complete agreement with a supergravity prediction of the same quantity in a double-scaling limit which involves a limit of large instanton number in the dual D3-D7 probe-brane setup.
We consider the expectation value of Wilson lines in two defect versions of N = 4 SYM, both with supersymmetry completely broken, where one is described in terms of an integrable boundary state, the other one not. For both cases, imposing a certain double scaling limit, we find agreement to two leading orders between the expectation values calculated from respectively the field theory and the string theory side of the AdS/dCFT correspondence.
We formulate and close the boundary state bootstrap for factorizing K-matrices in AdS/CFT. We found that there are no boundary degrees of freedom in the boundary bound states, merely the boundary parameters are shifted. We use this family of boundary bound states to describe the D3-D5 system for higher dimensional matrix product states and provide their asymptotic overlap formulas. In doing so we generalize the nesting for overlaps of matrix product states and Bethe states.
The encoding of all possible sets of Bethe equations for a spin chain with SU(N|M) symmetry into a QQ-system calls for an expression of spin chain overlaps entirely in terms of Q-functions. We take a significant step towards deriving such a universal formula in the case of overlaps between Bethe eigenstates and integrable boundary states, of relevance for AdS/dCFT, by determining the transformation properties of the overlaps under fermionic as well as bosonic dualities which allows us to move between any two descriptions of the spin chain encoded in the QQ-system. An important part of our anal…
We consider different supersymmetric mixed boundary conditions for scalar and fermionic fields in $AdS_2$, searching for the dual description of a family of interpolating Wilson Loops in ABJM theory. The family, which interpolates between the bosonic 1/6 BPS loop and the 1/2 BPS loop, can be thought of as an exact marginal deformation in a defect CFT$_1$. Confronting this property against holographic correlators and vacuum energy corrections singles out a particular boundary condition which we propose as dual to the interpolating family of Wilson loops.
We initiate the calculation of quantum corrections to Wilson loops in a class of four-dimensional defect conformal field theories with vacuum expectation values based on N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Concretely, we consider an infinite straight Wilson line, obtaining explicit results for the one-loop correction to its expectation value in the large-N limit. This allows us to extract the particle-interface potential of the theory. In a further double-scaling limit, we compare our results to those of a previous calculation in the dual string-theory set-up consisting of a D5-D3 probe-brane system …
We take the first step in extending the integrability approach to one-point functions in AdS/dCFT to higher loop orders. More precisely, we argue that the formula encoding all tree-level one-point functions of SU(2) operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory, dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with flux, has a natural asymptotic generalization to higher loop orders. The asymptotic formula correctly encodes the information about the one-loop correction to the one-point functions of non-protected operators once dressed by a simple flux-dependent factor, as we demonstrate by an explicit …
Integrable boundary states can be built up from pair annihilation amplitudes called $K$-matrices. These amplitudes are related to mirror reflections and they both satisfy Yang Baxter equations, which can be twisted or untwisted. We relate these two notions to each other and show how they are fixed by the unbroken symmetries, which, together with the full symmetry, must form symmetric pairs. We show that the twisted nature of the $K$-matrix implies specific selection rules for the overlaps. If the Bethe roots of the same type are paired the overlap is called chiral, otherwise it is achiral and …
We further study the correspondence between open semiclassical strings and long defect operators which is discussed in our previous work [hep-th/0410139]. We give an interpretation of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of SO(6)-> SO(3)_H x SO(3)_V from the viewpoint of the Riemann surface by following the argument of Minahan. Then we use the concrete form of the resolvent for a single cut solution and compute the anomalous dimension of operators dual to an open pulsating string at three-loop level. In the string side we obtain the energy of the open pulsating string solution by semiclassical an…
We consider defect composite operators in a defect superconformal field theory obtained by inserting an AdS_4 x S^2-brane in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. The one-loop dilatation operator for the scalar sector is represented by an integrable open spin chain. We give a description to construct coherent states for the open spin chain. Then, by evaluating the expectation value of the Hamiltonian with the coherent states in a long operator limit, a Landau-Lifshitz type of sigma model action is obtained. This action is also derived from the string action and hence we find a complete agreement in both…
We consider open spinning string solutions on an AdS_4 x S^2-brane (D5-brane) in the bulk AdS_5 x S^5 background. By taking account of the breaking of SO(6)_R to SO(3)_H x SO(3)_V due to the presence of the AdS-brane, the open rotating string ansatz is discussed. We construct the elliptic folded/circular open string solutions in the SU(2) and the SL(2) sectors, so that they satisfy the appropriate boundary conditions. On the other hand, in the SU(2) sector of the gauge theory, we compute the matrix of anomalous dimension of the defect operator, which turns out to be the Hamiltonian of an open …
We build the framework for performing loop computations in the defect version of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory which is dual to the probe D5-D3 brane system with background gauge-field flux. In this dCFT, a codimension-one defect separates two regions of space-time with different ranks of the gauge group and three of the scalar fields acquire non-vanishing and space-time-dependent vacuum expectation values. The latter leads to a highly non-trivial mass mixing problem between different colour and flavour components, which we solve using fuzzy-sphere coordinates. Furthermore, the resulting space-t…
Via a challenging field-theory computation, we confirm a supergravity prediction for the non-supersymmetric D3-D7 probe-brane system with probe geometry AdS_4 x S^2 x S^2, stabilized by fluxes. Supergravity predicts, in a certain double-scaling limit, the value of the one-point functions of chiral primaries of the dual defect version of N=4 SYM theory, where the fluxes translate into SO(3) x SO(3)-symmetric, Lie-algebra-valued vacuum expectation values for all six scalar fields. Using a generalization of the technique based on fuzzy spherical harmonics developed for the related D3-D5 probe-bra…
In this review we discuss recent advances in the computation of one-point functions in defect conformal field theories with holographic duals. We briefly review the appearance of integrable spin chains in N=4 super Yang--Mills theory and reformulate the problem of computing one-point functions to determining overlaps between Bethe states and a Matrix Product State. We will then demonstrate how these overlaps can be computed by determinant formulas. This work is based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop 2018. To appear in a special issue of J. Phys. A.
The 1/2-BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is an important and well-studied example of conformal defect. In particular, much work has been done for the correlation functions of operator insertions on the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation. In this paper, we extend such analyses to Wilson loops in the large-rank symmetric and antisymmetric representations, which correspond to probe D3 and D5 branes with $AdS_2 \times S^2$ and $AdS_2 \times S^4$ worldvolume geometries, ending at the $AdS_5$ boundary along a one-dimensional contour. We first compute the…
We calculate the leading contributions to the connected two-point functions of protected scalar operators in the defect version of N=4 SYM theory which is dual to the D5-D3 probe-brane system with k units of background gauge field flux. This involves several types of two-point functions which are vanishing in the theory without the defect, such as two-point functions of operators of unequal conformal dimension. We furthermore exploit the operator product expansion (OPE) and the boundary operator expansion (BOE), which form the basis of the boundary conformal bootstrap equations, to extract con…
We study the matrix product state which appears as the boundary state of the AdS/dCFT set-up where a probe D7 brane wraps two two-spheres stabilized by fluxes. The matrix product state plays a dual role, on one hand acting as a tool for computing one-point functions in a domain wall version of N=4 SYM and on the other hand acting as the initial state in the study of quantum quenches of the Heisenberg spin chain. We derive a number of selection rules for the overlaps between the matrix product state and the eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and in particular demonstrate that the matrix p…
We determine in a closed form all scalar one-point functions of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of flux which amounts to calculating the overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the integrable SO(6) spin chain and a certain matrix product state of bond dimension k. In particular, we show that the matrix product state is annihilated by all the parity odd charges of the spin chain which has recently been suggested as the criterion for such a state to correspond to an integrable initial state. Finally, we discuss the properties of the analogous matrix product state f…
The previous studies of the island and double holography mainly focus on codimension-one branes. This paper explores the island on the codimension-two brane in AdS/dCFT. The codimension-two brane is closely related to conical singularity, which is very different from the codimension-one brane. We analyze the mass spectrum of gravitons on the codimension-two brane and find that the larger the brane tension is, the smaller the gravitational mass is. The massless mode is forbidden by either the boundary or normalization conditions. We prove that the first massive gravitational mode is located on …
We propose a closed formula for the tree-level one-point functions of non-protected operators belonging to an SU(3) sub-sector of the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with background gauge field flux, k, valid for k=2. The formula passes a number of non-trivial analytical and numerical tests. Our proposal is based on expressing the one-point functions as an overlap between a Bethe eigenstate of the SU(3) spin chain and a certain matrix product state, deriving various factorization properties of the Gaudin norm and performing explicit computations for shorter spin chains. As its …
We consider generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which probe branes are embedded in gravity backgrounds dual to either conformal or confining gauge theories. These correspond to defect conformal field theories (dCFT) or QCD-like theories with fundamental matter, respectively. Computing the quark condensate and the meson spectrum for a non-supersymmetric QCD-like theory from supergravity, we find spontaneous U(1) chiral symmetry breaking as well as the associated Goldstone boson. For another example at finite temperature, we observe a phase transition corresponding to a geometrical …
The AdS/dCFT correspondence is used to show that a planar q-dimensional superconformal CFT defect expands, under the addition of electric charge and angular momentum, to a supersymmetric higher-dimensional defect of geometry R^q x C, where C is an arbitrary curve. The dual string theory process is the expansion of D-branes and fundamental strings into a supertube in an AdS background.
One-point functions of certain non-protected scalar operators in the defect CFT dual to the D3-D5 probe brane system with k units of world volume flux can be expressed as overlaps between Bethe eigenstates of the Heisenberg spin chain and a matrix product state. We present a closed expression of determinant form for these one-point functions, valid for any value of k. The determinant formula factorizes into the k=2 result times a k-dependent prefactor. Making use of the transfer matrix of the Heisenberg spin chain we recursively relate the matrix product state for higher even and odd k to the …
It has been constructed fuzzy AdS- conifold $ Y_{AdS_{F}}^{6} $ on the base $ AdS_{F}^{3}\times AdS_{F}^{2} $ which is topologically homeomorphic with the total space of the fibration $ X_{AdS_{F}}^{5}\rightarrow AdS_{F}^{2}\times AdS_{F}^{2} $. After the projective module description of this bundle, the pseudo fuzzy Dirac and chirality operators on fuzzy $ AdS^{2}_{F}\times AdS_{F}^{2} $ have been studied. Using the fuzzy Ginsparg-Wilson algebra, it has been studied the gauged fuzzy Dirac and chirality operators in instanton sector. It has been showed that they have correct commutative limit …
We study the quantum analogue of primary fields and their descendants on fuzzy AdS_2, proposed in hep-th/0004072. Three-point vertices are calculated and shown to exhibit the conventional 1/N expansion as well as nonperturtive effects in large N, thus providing a strong consistency check of the fuzzy AdS_2 model. A few new physical motivations for this model are also presented.
We show that the existent fuzzy S^2 and S^4 models are natural candidates for the quantum geometry on the corresponding spheres in AdS/CFT correspondence. These models fit nicely the data from the dipole mechanism for the stringy exclusion principle. In the AdS_2 X S^2 case, we show that a wrapped fractional membrane can be used to count for the large ground state degeneracy. We also propose a fuzzy AdS_2 model whose fundamental commutation relation may underlie the UV/IR connection.
In this article we construct the chirality and Dirac operators on noncommutative AdS_2. We also derive the discrete spectrum of the Dirac operator which is important in the study of the spectral triple associated with AdS_2. It is shown that the degeneracy of the spectrum present in the commutative AdS_2 is lifted in the noncommutative case. The way we construct the chirality operator is suggestive of how to introduce the projector operators of the corresponding projective modules on this space.
Using the non-Abelian action for coincident Type IIB gravitational waves proposed in hep-th/0303183 we show that giant gravitons in the AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 background can be described in terms of coincident waves expanding into a fuzzy cylinder, spanned by two embedding scalars and one worldvolume scalar. This fuzzy cylinder has dipole and magnetic moments with respect to the 2-form and 6-form potentials of the background, and can be interpreted as a bound state of D1-branes and D5-branes (wrapped on the 4-torus) wrapped around the basis of the cylinder. We show the exact agreement between this …
In this article we describe the giant graviton configurations in AdS_m x S^n backgrounds that involve 5-spheres, namely, the giant graviton in AdS_4 x S^7 and the dual giant graviton in AdS_7 x S^4, in terms of dielectric gravitational waves. Thus, we conclude the programme initiated in hep-th/0207199 and pursued in hep-th/0303183 and hep-th/0406148 towards the microscopical description of giant gravitons in AdS_m x S^n spacetimes. In our construction the gravitational waves expand due to Myers dielectric effect onto fuzzy 5-spheres which are described as S^1 bundles over fuzzy CP^2. These fuz…
We extend a well-known D-brane construction of the AdS/dCFT correspondence to non-abelian defects. We focus on the bulk side of the correspondence and show that there exists a regime of parameters in which the low-energy description consists of two approximately decoupled sectors. The two sectors are gravity in the ambient spacetime, and a six-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The Yang-Mills theory is defined on a rigid AdS_4 x S^2 background and admits sixteen supersymmetries. We also consider a one-parameter deformation that gives rise to a family of Yang-Mills theories on asympt…
We construct a new giant graviton solution in AdS_5 x Y_5, with Y_5 a quasi-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, consisting on a Kaluza-Klein monopole wrapped around the Y_5 and with its Taub-NUT direction in AdS_5. We find that this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construct…
We calculate the exact eigenvalues of the adjoint scalar fields in the massive vacua of N=1* SUSY Yang-Mills with gauge group SU(N). This provides a field theory prediction for the distribution of D3 brane charge in the AdS dual. We verify the proposal of Polchinski and Strassler that the D3-brane's lie on a fuzzy sphere in the supergravity limit and determine the corrections to this distribution due to worldsheet and quantum effects. The calculation also provides several new results concerning the equilibrium configurations of the N-body Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian.
We construct spinning dual M2 giant gravitons in AdS_4 x S^7, which generically become 1/16 BPS states, and show that their world-volumes become torii. By taking an orbifold, we obtain spinning dielectric D2-brane configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3 dual to specific BPS operators in ABJM theory. This reveals a novel mechanism how to give an angular momentum to a dielectric D2-brane. We also find that when its angular momentum in the AdS_4 becomes large, it approaches to a ring-like object. Our result might suggest an existence of supersymmetric black rings in the AdS_4 background. We will also disc…
We consider the critical $O(N)$ model in the presence of an external magnetic field localized in space. This setup can potentially be realized in quantum simulators and in some liquid mixtures. The external field can be understood as a relevant perturbation of the trivial line defect, and thus triggers a defect Renormalization Group (RG) flow. In agreement with the $g$-theorem, the external localized field leads at long distances to a stable nontrivial defect CFT (DCFT) with $g<1$. We obtain several predictions for the corresponding DCFT data in the epsilon expansion and in the large $N$ limit…
We develop both the gravity and field theory sides of the Karch-Randall conjecture that the near-horizon description of a certain D5-D3 brane configuration in string theory, realized as AdS_5 x S^5 bisected by an AdS_4 x S^2 "brane", is dual to N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory in R^4 coupled to an R^3 defect. We propose a complete Lagrangian for the field theory dual, a novel "defect superconformal field theory" wherein a subset of the fields of N=4 SYM interacts with a d=3 SU(N) fundamental hypermultiplet on the defect preserving conformal invariance and 8 supercharges. The Kaluza-Klein reduction …
We consider the following two problems: classical domain walls in the $N=1^*$ mass deformation of the maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills theory, and D-strings as external magnetic sources in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that they are both described by Nahm's equations with unconventional boundary conditions, and analyze the relevant moduli space of solutions. We argue that general `fuzzy sphere' configurations of D-strings in AdS$_5$ correspond to Wilson-'t Hooft lines in higher representations of the dual SU(n) gauge theory.
Eighth-BPS local operators in N=4 SYM are dual to quantum states arising from the quantization of a moduli space of giant gravitons in AdS5xS5. Earlier results on the quantization of this moduli space give a Hilbert space of multiple harmonic oscillators in 3 dimensions. We use these results, along with techniques from fuzzy geometry, to develop a map between quantum states and brane geometries. In particular there is a map between the oscillator states and points in a discretization of the base space in the toric fibration of the moduli space. We obtain a geometrical decomposition of the spac…
We study relations between different kinds of non-commutative spheres which have appeared in the context of ADS/CFT correspondences recently, emphasizing the connections between spaces that have manifest quantum group symmetry and spaces that have manifest classical symmetry. In particular we consider the quotient $SU_q(2)/U(1)$ at roots of unity, and find its relations with the fuzzy sphere with manifest classical SU(2) symmetry. Deformation maps between classical and quantum symmetry, the $U_q(SU(2))$ module structure of quantum spheres and the structure of indecomposable representations of …
We study the fuzzy hyperboloids AdS^2 and dS^2 as brane solutions in matrix models. The unitary representations of SO(2,1) required for quantum field theory are identified, and explicit formulae for their realization in terms of fuzzy wavefunctions are given. In a second part, we study the (A)dS^2 brane geometry and its dynamics, as governed by a suitable matrix model. In particular, we show that trace of the energy-momentum tensor of matter induces transversal perturbations of the brane and of the Ricci scalar. This leads to a linearized form of Henneaux-Teitelboim-type gravity, illustrating …
We write down scalar field theory and gauge theory on two-dimensional noncommutative spaces ${\cal M}$ with nonvanishing curvature and non-constant non-commutativity. Usual dynamics results upon taking the limit of ${\cal M}$ going to i) a commutative manifold ${\cal M}_0$ having nonvanishing curvature and ii) the noncommutative plane. Our procedure does not require introducing singular algebraic maps or frame fields. Rather, we exploit the Kähler structure in the limit i) and identify the symplectic two-form with the volume two-form. As an example, we take ${\cal M}$ to be the stereographical…
Giant gravitons in AdS_5 x S^5, and its orbifolds, have a dual field theory representation as states created by chiral primary operators. We argue that these operators are not single-trace operators in the conformal field theory, but rather are determinants and subdeterminants of scalar fields; the stringy exclusion principle applies to these operators. Evidence for this identification comes from three sources: (a) topological considerations in orbifolds, (b) computation of protected correlators using free field theory and (c) a Matrix model argument. The last argument applies to AdS_7 x S^4 a…
We construct a new solution of type IIB supergravity with eight supercharges by applying non-Abelian T-duality to the $ AdS_5\times S^5$ solution, along the $ SU(2)$ isometries in both the internal and Lorentz symmetries. The study of quantised charges and D-brane embeddings suggests a configuration of D1 and D3'-branes that polarise into concentric, spherical, D3 and D5-branes due to the Myers dielectric effect. We find that our solution is dual to a IIB matrix model with fuzzy sphere vacua characterised by partitions of the number of D1 and D3'-branes. We also study the solution obtained via…
We consider a few ansatzs for the four and seven forms of 11-dimensional supergravity over AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k while try to keep the geometry unchanged. From the 4-form equations, we arrive at some massless scalars and pseudoscalars in the bulk of Euclidean AdS_4 that match with some boundary $Δ_+$=3 operators. Indeed, the main objects are instantons and domain walls as the fully and partially localized objects in the external space, respectively. The latter comes from an (anti)M5-brane wrapping partly around three internal directions similar to the fuzzy S^3/Z_k solutions. Except for the first so…
Following is a collection of lecture notes on D-branes, which may be used by the reader as preparation for applications to modern research applications such as: the AdS/CFT and other gauge theory/geometry correspondences, Matrix Theory and stringy non-commutative geometry, etc. In attempting to be reasonably self-contained, the notes start from classical point-particles and develop the subject logically (but selectively) through classical strings, quantisation, D-branes, supergravity, superstrings, string duality, including many detailed applications. Selected focus topics feature D-branes as …
We study the constraints on HST models of AdS space-time. The causal diamonds of HST along time-like geodesics of AdS space-time, fit nicely into the FRW patch of AdS space. The coordinate singularity of the FRW patch is identified with the proper time at which the Hilbert space of the causal diamond becomes infinite dimensional. For diamonds much smaller than the AdS radius, RAdS, the time dependent Hamiltonians of HST are the same as those used to describe similar diamonds in Minkowski space. In particular, they are invariant under the fuzzy analog of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the…
We construct a new NS5-brane solution in AdS_4 x CP^3 with S^2 x S^3 topology. This solution belongs to the general class of non-Einstein N_{11} metrics to which T^{1,1} belongs, and carries a non-vanishing D0-brane charge. In eleven dimensions it gives rise to a squashed S^2 x S^3 M5-brane giant graviton which is now of the N_{10} type. The energies of both solutions satisfy the BPS bound E=kQ/2, indicating supersymmetric configurations, where Q is interpreted as D0-brane charge for the NS5-brane and as angular momentum for the dynamically stable M5-brane giant graviton. The ground state is d…
The motion of strings on symmetric space target spaces underlies the integrability of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Although these theories, whose excitations are giant magnons, are non-relativistic they are classically equivalent, via the Polhmeyer reduction, to a relativistic integrable field theory known as a symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These theories can be formulated as integrable deformations of gauged WZW models. In this work we consider the class of symmetric spaces CP^{n+1} and solve the corresponding generalized sine-Gordon theories at the quantum level by finding the exact spe…
