There is rising interest in organic scintillators with low scattering length for future neutrino detectors. Therefore, a new scintillator system was developed based on admixtures of paraffin wax in linear alkyl benzene. The transparency and viscosity of this gel-like material can be tuned by temperature adjustment. Whereas it is a colorless transparent liquid at temperatures around 40C it has a milky wax structure below 20C. The production and properties of such a scintillator as well as its advantages compared to transparent liquids are described.
Organic liquid scintillators are used in many neutrino physics experiments of the past and present. In particular for low energy neutrinos when realtime and energy information are required, liquid scintillators have several advantages compared to other technologies. In many cases the organic liquid needs to be loaded with metal to enhance the neutrino signal over background events. Several metal loaded scintillators of the past suffered from chemical and optical instabilities, limiting the performance of these neutrino detectors. Different ways of metal loading are described in the article wit…
Organic liquid scintillators have been used for decades in many neutrino physics experiments. They are particularly suited for the detection of low-energy neutrinos where energy and timing information is required. Organic liquid scintillators exhibit advantages such as high light yield, cost effectiveness, radio purity, and more. However, they also entail disadvantages, most prominently a lack of vertex resolution and particle identification. In recent years, various novel ideas have emerged to improve the performance of organic liquid scintillators. In this review, novel approaches to organic…
Solar neutrinos interact with double beta decay detectors (DBD) and hence will contribute to backgrounds (BG) for DBD experiments. Background contributions due to solar neutrinos are evaluated for their interactions with atomic electrons and nuclei in liquid scintillation detectors used for DBD experiments. They are shown to be serious backgrounds for high sensitivity DBD experiments to search for the Majorana neutrino masses in the inverted and normal hierarchy regions.
Several liters of an organic liquid scintillator (LS) loaded with Nd have been made. We report on performances of this scintillator in terms of optical properties, radiopurity and light yield for a Nd concentration of 6.5 g/l. A possible application to search for the 150Nd neutrinoless double beta decay with a 10-ton scale LS detector is discussed together with further improvements.
The electron antineutrino spectrum in the Stereo reactor experiment (ILL Grenoble) is measured via the inverse beta decay signals in an organic liquid scintillator. The six target cells of the Stereo detector are filled with about 1800 litres of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator optimised for the requirements of the experiment. These target cells are surrounded by similar cells containing liquid scintillator without the Gd-loading. The development and characteristics of these scintillators are reported. In particular, the transparency, light production and pulse shape discrimination capabilities o…
It is shown that a large volume liquid organic scintillator detector with an energy resolution of 10 keV at 200 keV 1 sigma will be sensitive to solar pp-neutrino, if operated at the target radiopurity levels for the Borexino detector, or the solar neutrino project of KamLAND.
Slow liquid scintillator Cherenkov detectors have been proposed as part of several future neutrino experiments because they can provide both directionality and energy measurements. This feature is expected to enhance the sensitivities for MeV-scale neutrino physics, including solar physics, the search for supernova relic neutrino, and the study of geo-sciences. In this study, the characteristics of a slow liquid scintillator were investigated, along with the light yields and decay time constants for various combinations of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO), and 1,4-bis (2-me…
Technology developed for the T2K electromagnetic calorimeter has been adapted to make a small footprint, reliable, segmented detector to characterise anti-neutrinos emitted by nuclear reactors. The device has been developed and demonstrated by the University of Liverpool and underwent field tests at the Wylfa Magnox Reactor on Anglesey, UK. It was situated in a 20\,ft ISO shipping container, above ground, roughly 60\,m from the 1.5\,\GWt\ reactor core. Based on the design of the T2K Near Detector ECal, the device detects anti-neutrinos through the distinctive delayed coincidence signal of inve…
Borexino is a solar neutrino experiment designed to observe the 0.86 MeV Be-7 neutrinos emitted in the pp cycle of the sun. Neutrinos will be detected by their elastic scattering on electrons in 100 tons of liquid scintillator. The neutrino event rate in the scintillator is expected to be low (~0.35 events per day per ton), and the signals will be at energies below 1.5 MeV, where background from natural radioactivity is prominent. Scintillation light produced by the recoil electrons is observed by an array of 2240 photomultiplier tubes. Because of the intrinsic radioactive contaminants in thes…
Purification of the 278 tons of liquid scintillator and 889 tons of buffer shielding for the Borexino solar neutrino detector was performed with a system that combined distillation, water extraction, gas stripping and filtration. The purification of the scintillator achieved unprecedented low backgrounds for the large scale liquid scintillation detector. This paper describes the principles of operation, design, construction and commissioning of the purification system, and reviews the requirements and methods to achieve system cleanliness and leak-tightness.
New experimental research programs in the field of neutrino physics are calling for new detectors with large masses, high energy resolution and good background rejection capabilities. This paper presents a novel hybrid organic/inorganic scintillator, which is able to improve on all three aspects simultaneously. This scintillator consists of microscopic grains of inorganic crystals suspended in an organic scintillating carrier medium. Due to multiple scattering off the crystals, this scintillator appears opaque over longer distances and is intended for use in specialized detectors. Thanks to th…
SuperFGD, a highly granular scintillator detector, is under construction to reduce systematic uncertainties in the T2K experiment in order to improve the sensitivity to CP-violation in neutrino oscillations. The readout of scintillating light from each cube is provided by three wavelength shifting fibers inserted into the three holes and coupled to MPPC micropixel photosensors. The cubes are covered with a white chemica…
The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the "atmospheric neutrino" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab's NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as …
Liquid scintillator experiments for neutrinoless double beta decay search have high sensitivity based on the ultra low background environment and high scalability. This paper describes an overview of current ongoing projects KamLAND-Zen and SNO+.
Opaque scintillators are designed to have a short scattering length such that scintillation photons are probabilistically confined to a small region of space about their origin. The benefit of this feature is that information on the interaction event topology can be recorded with greater fidelity than in traditional highly transparent media with sensors at large distances from the light production region. Opaque scintillator detectors rely on wavelength-shifting fibers to extract the scintillation light; however, the efficiency of light collection has not yet been directly measured in experime…
We describe the work carried out at MPIK to design, model, build and characterize a prototype cell filled with a novel indium-loaded scintillator of interest for real-time low energy solar neutrino spectroscopy. First, light propagation in optical modules was studied with experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. Subsequently a 5 cm x 5 cm x 100 cm prototype detector was set up and the optical performances of several samples were measured. We first tested a benchmark PXE-based scintillator, which performed an attenuation length of ~ 4.2 m and a photo-electron yield of ~ 730 pe/MeV. Then we meas…
Liquid scintillator detectors are playing an increasingly important role in low-energy neutrino experiments. In this article, we describe a generic energy response model of liquid scintillator detectors that provides energy estimations of sub-percent accuracy. This model fits a minimal set of physically-motivated parameters that capture the essential characteristics of scintillator response and that can naturally account for changes in scintillator over time, helping to avoid associated biases or systematic uncertainties. The model employs a one-step calculation and look-up tables, yielding an…
Detection of supernova relic neutrinos could provide key support for our current understanding of stellar and cosmological evolution, and precise measurements of these neutrinos could yield novel insights into the universe. In this paper, we studied the detection potential of supernova relic neutrinos using linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as a slow liquid scintillator. The linear alkyl benzene features good separation of Cherenkov and scintillation lights, thereby providing a new route for particle identification. We further addressed key issues in current experiments, including (1) the charged cur…
Liquid scintillator detectors are widely used in modern neutrino studies. The unique optical properties of semiconducting nanocrystals, known as quantum dots, offer intriguing possibilities for improving standard liquid scintillator, especially when combined with new photodetection technology. Quantum dots also provide a means to dope scintillator with candidate isotopes for neutrinoless double beta decay searches. In this work, the first studies of the scintillation properties of quantum-dot-doped liquid scintillator using both UV light and radioactive sources are presented.
In 1956 Reines & Cowan discovered the neutrino using a liquid scintillator detector. The neutrinos interacted with the scintillator, producing light that propagated across transparent volumes to surrounding photo-sensors. This approach has remained one of the most widespread and successful neutrino detection technologies used since. This article introduces a concept that breaks with the conventional paradigm of transparency by confining and collecting light near its creation point with an opaque scintillator and a dense array of optical fibres. This technique, called LiquidO, can provide high-…
We report on the production and characterization of liquid scintillators for the detection of electron antineutrinos by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. One hundred eighty-five tons of gadolinium-loaded (0.1% by mass) liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) and two hundred tons of unloaded liquid scintillator (LS) were successfully produced from a linear-alkylbenzene (LAB) solvent in six months. The scintillator properties, the production and purification systems, and the quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures are described.
Environmental radioactivity is a dominant background for rare decay search experiments, and it is difficult to completely remove such an impurity from detector vessels. We propose a scintillation balloon as the active vessel of a liquid scintillator in order to identify this undesirable radioactivity. According to our feasibility studies, the scintillation balloon enables the bismuth--polonium sequential decay to be tagged with a 99.7\% efficiency, assuming a KamLAND (Kamioka Liquid scintillator AntiNeutrino Detector)-type liquid scintillator detector. This tagging of sequential decay using al…
We introduce a novel approach to investigate CP violation in the neutrino sector, based on the simultaneous detection of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ stemming from the oscillation of $ν_μ$ and $\barν_μ$ produced in the decay at rest of $π$s and $μ$s at a beam dump. This approach relies on a novel liquid scintillator detector technology expected to yield unprecedented identification of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ charged-current interactions, which we investigate by means of Montecarlo simulations. Here we report preliminary results concerning both the detection technique and its physics reach.
This paper presents studies on application of convolutional neural network (CNN) to GEANT4 optical simulation data generated with a scintillator detector subdivided into 1 cubic cm, which is designed for the long-baseline neutrino experiment. Classification of interaction, regression of momentum, and segmentation of hits are demonstrated for single particle and neutrino-nucleon interaction events with well established CNN architectures by feeding reconstructed 2D projection images. In the study it is shown that the application of CNN to the 1 cm subdivided scintillator detector can provide a f…
Alpha from natural radioactivity may interact with a nucleus and emit a neutron. The reaction introduces background to the liquid scintillator (LS) based neutrino experiments. In the LS detector, alpha comes from 238U, 232Th and 210Po decay chains. For Gadolinium-doped LS (Gd-LS) detector, alpha also comes from 227Ac. The nucleus 13C is a natural component of Carbon which is rich in the LS. The background rate and spectrum should be subtracted carefully from the neutrino candidates. This paper describes the calculation of neutron yield and spectrum with uncertainty estimated. The results are r…
Three-dimensional finely grained plastic scintillator detectors bring many advantages in particle detectors, allowing a massive active target which enables a high-precision tracking of interaction products, excellent calorimetry and a sub-nanosecond time resolution. Whilst such detectors can be scaled up to several-tonnes, as required by future neutrino experiments, a relatively long production time, where each single plastic-scintillator element is independently manufactured and machined, together with potential challenges in the assembly, complicates their realisation. In this manuscript we …
The research of geoneutrino is a new interdisciplinary subject of particle experiments and geo-science. Potassium-40 ($^\text{40}$K) decays contribute roughly 1/3 of the radiogenic heat of the Earth, but it is still missing from the experimental observation. Solar neutrino experiments with liquid scintillators have observed uranium and thorium geoneutrinos and are the most promising in the low-background neutrino detection. In this article, we present the new concept of using liquid-scintillator Cherenkov detectors to detect the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process of $^\text{40}$K geo…
In the paper, it is discussed by using Monte-Carlo simulation that the Bayesian Neural Network(BNN) is applied to determine neutrino incoming direction in reactor neutrino experiments and supernova explosion location by scintillator detectors. As a result, compared to the method in Ref.\cite{key-1}, the uncertainty on the measurement of the neutrino direction using BNN is significantly improved. The uncertainty on the measurement of the reactor neutrino direction is about 1.0$^\circ$ at the 68.3% C.L., and the one in the case of supernova neutrino is about 0.6$^\circ$ at the 68.3% C.L.. In this article, The factors that affect the final water extraction like the partitioncoefficient and the factors that affect it, the optimal mass transfer droplet size, the flow rate ratio, theoretical stage and different working mode (LS as continuous phase or dispersed phase) have b…
A new experiment based on tin-loaded scintillator is proposed to measure the 2nu double beta decay half-life of Sn-124 for the first time. Measurements of long term stabilitiy and optical properties of the produced scintillator are presented. In addition a sophisticated estimation of the background due to cosmic ray spallation on tin has been performed. It is shown that such a measurement is feasible and can reach half-lives of 10^22 years, thus covering all current theoretical predictions for this decay mode.

Water-based Liquid Scintillator is a novel detection medium that combines the advantages of pure water, including low attenuation, accurate direction reconstruction, and low cost, and those of liquid scintillator, including high light yield and low-threshold detection. When coupled with high efficiency, fast-timing photosensors, such as Large Area Picosecond PhotoDetectors, Water-based Liq…
KamLAND is a massive liquid-scintillator-based neutrino detector studying low energy neutrino oscillation. The experiment has discovered a large deficit of the reactor neutrino flux with baseline of 180km in the year 2002. This result is placing a strong impact on the elementary particle physics. The KamLAND detector makes use of one kiloton of liquid scintillator (LS) as the active neutrino target. This is the largest homogeneous LS detector in the world. Although the light yield and attenuation length of the LS were measured to be 57% anthracene and ~10m, in the test experiments, when it is …
A large-volume liquid scintillator can be used as a tracking detector to measure high-energy neutrino events, like atmospheric neutrinos and neutrino beams. The lepton flavor recognition is almost absolute above 1 GeV. The energy resolution is 2--5 %, the main uncertainties coming from nuclear physics and poorly recognized hadrons. At GeV scale antineutrinos may be statistically distinguishable from neutrinos by neutron and proton signals.
Scintillator detectors can be used in experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay. A wide variety of double beta decay candidate isotopes can be made into scintillators or can be loaded into scintillators. Experimental programs developing liquid xenon, inorganic crystals, and Nd-loaded liquid scintillator are described in this review. Experiments with 48Ca and 150Nd benefit from their high endpoint which places the neutrinoless double beta decay signal above most backgrounds from natural radioactivity.
We show that liquid organic scintillator detectors (e.g., KamLAND and Borexino) can measure the 8B solar neutrino flux by means of the nu_e charged current interaction with the 13C nuclei naturally contained in the scintillators. The neutrino events can be identified by exploiting the time and space coincidence with the subsequent decay of the produced 13N nuclei. We perform a detailed analysis of the background in KamLAND, Borexino and in a possible liquid scintillator detector at SNOLab, showing that the 8B solar neutrino signal can be extracted with a reasonable uncertainty in a few years o…
Opaque detectors are a recently proposed novel detector concept where an opaque scintillator aligned with wavelength-shifting fibers is used to enable the discrimination of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos with a rather low energy threshold. In this work, we investigate the potential effects of the enhanced detection capabilities of the opaque detectors in accelerator neutrino experiments. Focusing on the energy threshold, energy resolution, detection efficiency and background suppression in the analysis of electron-like events, we determine whether using opaque detectors could lead to imp…

Nonlinearity of the liquid scintillator energy response is a key to measuring the neutrino energy spectrum in reactor neutrino experiments such as Daya Bay and JUNO. We measured in laboratory the nonlinearity of the Linear Alkyl Benzene based liquid scintillator, which is used in Daya Bay and will be used in JUNO, via Compton scattering process. By tagging the scattered gamma from the liquid scintillator sample simultaneously at seven angles, the instability of the system was largely cancelled. The accurately measured nonlinearity will improve the precision of the $θ_{13}$, $Δm^2$, and reactor…
The potential for using slow-fluor liquid scintillators to study low energy solar neutrinos and neutrinoless double beta decay (0nbb) is explored through a series of simulations. The fluorescence model assumed for the primary fluor has characteristics similar to acenaphthene, recently used to demonstrate Cherenkov separation at energies around 1 MeV. Results here indicate notably better directional reconstruction in large-scale detectors than has previously been suggested by other approaches, allowing better identification of low energy solar neutrinos. These studies indicate that a detector w…
The fluorescence decay-time constants have been measured for several scintillator mixtures based on phenyl-o-xylylethane (PXE) and linear alkylbenzene (LAB) solvents. The resulting values are of relevance for the physics performance of the proposed large-volume liquid scintillator detector LENA (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy). In particular, the impact of the measured values to the search for proton decay via p -> K+ antineutrino is evaluated in this work.
Ortho-positronium (o-Ps) formation and decay can replace the annihilation process, when positron interacts in liquid scintillator media. The delay induced by the positronium decay represents either a potential signature for anti-neutrino detection, via inverse beta decay, or to identify and suppress positron background, as recently demonstrated by the Borexino experiment. The formation probability and decay time of o-Ps depend strongly on the surrounding material. In this paper, we characterize the o-Ps properties in liquid scintillators as function of concentrations of gadolinium, lithium, ne…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multipurpose neutrino experiment with a 20 kt liquid scintillator detector designed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, and measure the neutrino oscillation parameters. Linear alkyl benzene (LAB) will be used as the solvent for the liquid scintillation system in the central detector of JUNO. For this purpose, we have prepared LAB samples, and have measured their light attenuation lengths, with one achieving a length of 25.8 m, comparable to the diameter of the JUNO detector.
For liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors of kiloton scale, the transparency of the organic solvent is of central importance. The present paper reports on laboratory measurements of the optical scattering lengths of the organic solvents PXE, LAB, and Dodecane which are under discussion for next-generation experiments like SNO+, Hanohano, or LENA. Results comprise the wavelength range from 415 to 440nm. The contributions from Rayleigh and Mie scattering as well as from absorption/re-emission processes are discussed. Based on the present results, LAB seems to be the preferred solvent for a larg…
Over the course of several decades, organic liquid scintillators have formed the basis for successful neutrino detectors. Gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillators provide efficient background suppression for electron antineutrino detection at nuclear reactor plants. In the Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment, a newly developed beta-diketonate gadolinium-loaded scintillator is utilized for the first time. Its large scale production and characterization are described. A new, light yield matched metal-free companion scintillator is presented. Both organic liquids comprise the target and "G…
NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with two functionally identical liquid scintillator tracking detectors, i.e. the Near Detector (ND) and the Far Detector (FD). One of NOvA's physics goal is to measure neutrino oscillation parameters by studying $ν_e$ appearance and $ν_μ$ disappearance with the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. An accurate light model is a prerequisite for precise charged particle energy estimation in the detectors. Particle energy is needed in event reconstruction and classification, both of which are cr…
Neutrinos produced in the Sun by electron capture reactions on $^{13}{\rm N}$, $^{15}{\rm O}$ and $^{17}{\rm F}$, to which we refer as ecCNO neutrinos, are not usually considered in solar neutrino analysis since the expected fluxes are extremely low. The experimental determination of this sub-dominant component of the solar neutrino flux is very difficult but could be rewarding since it provides a determination of the metallic content of the solar core and, moreover, probes the solar neutrino survival probability in the transition region at $E_ν\sim 2.5\,{\rm MeV}$. In this letter, we suggest …
The main signature for anti-neutrino detection in reactor and geo-neutrino experiments based on scintillators is provided by the space-time coincidence of positron and neutron produced in the Inverse Beta Decay reaction. Such a signature strongly suppresses backgrounds and allows for measurements performed underground with a relatively high signal-to-background ratio. In an aboveground environment, however, the twofold coincidence technique is not sufficient to efficiently reject the high background rate induced by cosmogenic events. Enhancing the positron-neutron twofold coincidence efficienc…
Liquid scintillator (LS) is widely used in various neutrino oscillation experiments, in particular, the reactor neutrino experiments. The complex absorption and re-emission processes of optical photons are known to be an important source of the non-linear and non-uniform response of LS detectors. Precise simulation of light propagation in LS is highly desirable to model the detector response and reduce the systematic errors. In this paper, we develop a novel optical model which can completely deal with the competitive photon absorption and subsequent re-emission processes of the LS components.…
We present a technique for separating nuclear double beta decay ($ββ$-decay) events from background neutrino interactions due to $^{8}$B decays in the sun. This background becomes dominant in a kiloton-scale liquid-scintillator detector deep underground and is usually considered as irreducible due to an overlap in deposited energy with the signal. However, electrons from 0$νββ$-decay often exceed the Cherenkov threshold in liquid scintillator, producing photons that are prompt and correlated in direction with the initial electron direction. The use of large-area fast photodetectors allows some…
We studied the temperature dependence of the light yield of the linear alkyl benzene (LAB)-based and mesitylene-based liquid scintillators. The light yield increases by 23% for both liquid scintillators when the temperature is lowered from $26\;^{\circ}$C to $-40\;^{\circ }$C, correcting for the temperature response of the photomultiplier tube. The measurements help to understand the energy response of the liquid scintillator detectors. Especially, the next generation reactor neutrino experiments for neutrino mass hierarchy, such as the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), require…
