Several liters of an organic liquid scintillator (LS) loaded with Nd have been made. We report on performances of this scintillator in terms of optical properties, radiopurity and light yield for a Nd concentration of 6.5 g/l. A possible application to search for the 150Nd neutrinoless double beta decay with a 10-ton scale LS detector is discussed together with further improvements.

The search for neutrinoless double-beta decay is an important part of the global neutrino physics program. One double-beta decay isotope currently under investigation is 100Mo. In this article, we discuss the results of a feasibility study investigating the use of molybdenum-loaded liquid scintillator. A large, molybdenum-loaded liquid scintillator detector is one potential design for a low-background, internal-source neutrinoless double-beta decay search with 100Mo. The program outlined in this article included the selection of a solute containing molybdenum, a scintillating solvent and the e…
The SNO+ experiment, located in SNOLAB, 2 kilometers underground in the Creighton mine, near Sudbury, Canada, is a large scale neutrino detector whose main purpose is to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay and thus probe the Majorana nature of the neutrino. With 780 tons of liquid scintillator loaded with tellurium, SNO+ aims at exploring the Majorana neutrino mass parameter space down to the inverted mass hierarchy region. The versatility of the SNO+ detector also allows it to detect solar and reactor neutrinos, provide a measurement of the geoneutrino flux, detect galactic core-collaps…
SNO+ will search for neutrinoless double beta decay by loading 780 tonnes of linear alkylbenzene liquid scintillator with O(tonne) of neodymium. Using natural Nd at 0.1% loading will provide 43.7 kg of 150Nd given its 5.6% abundance and allow the experiment to reach a sensitivity to the effective neutrino mass of 100-200 meV at 90% C.L in a 3 year run. The SNO+ detector has ultra low backgrounds with 7000 tonnes of water shielding and self-shielding of the scintillator. Distillation and several other purification techniques will be used with the aim of achieving Borexino levels of backgrounds.…
Scintillator detectors can be used in experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay. A wide variety of double beta decay candidate isotopes can be made into scintillators or can be loaded into scintillators. Experimental programs developing liquid xenon, inorganic crystals, and Nd-loaded liquid scintillator are described in this review. Experiments with 48Ca and 150Nd benefit from their high endpoint which places the neutrinoless double beta decay signal above most backgrounds from natural radioactivity.
The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe by using $^{136}$Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent, low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart from guaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the background from cosmogenic muon-spallation products and $^{8}$B solar neutrinos. Indeed these events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interest around the Q-value of the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. In this pape…
We report on the production and characterization of liquid scintillators for the detection of electron antineutrinos by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. One hundred eighty-five tons of gadolinium-loaded (0.1% by mass) liquid scintillator (Gd-LS) and two hundred tons of unloaded liquid scintillator (LS) were successfully produced from a linear-alkylbenzene (LAB) solvent in six months. The scintillator properties, the production and purification systems, and the quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures are described.
Organic liquid scintillators are used in many neutrino physics experiments of the past and present. In particular for low energy neutrinos when realtime and energy information are required, liquid scintillators have several advantages compared to other technologies. In many cases the organic liquid needs to be loaded with metal to enhance the neutrino signal over background events. Several metal loaded scintillators of the past suffered from chemical and optical instabilities, limiting the performance of these neutrino detectors. Different ways of metal loading are described in the article wit…
We present a new neutrinoless double beta decay concept: the high pressure selenium hexafluoride gas time projection chamber. Combining techniques pioneered in high pressure xenon gas such as topological discrimination, with the high Q-value afforded by double beta decay isotope $^{82}$Se, a promising new detection technique is outlined. Lack of free electrons in SeF$_6$ mandates the use of an ion TPC. The microphysics of ion production and drift, which have many nuances, are explored. Background estimates are produced suggesting such a detector may achieve background indices of better than 1 …
The lepton number violating process of neutrinoless double-beta decay could result from the physics beyond the Standard Model needed to generate the neutrino masses. Taking different approaches, the current generation of $^{76}$Ge experiments, the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR and GERDA, lead the field in both the ultra-low background and energy resolution achieved. The next generation of neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments requires increased mass and further reduction of backgrounds to maximize discovery potential. Building on the successes of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR and GERDA, the LEGEND co…
The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) searches for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Xe-136 using high-pressure xenon gas TPCs with electroluminescent amplification. A scaled-up version of this technology with about 1 tonne of enriched xenon could reach in less than 5 years of operation a sensitivity to the half-life of neutrinoless double-beta decay decay better than 1E27 years, improving the current limits by at least one order of magnitude. This prediction is based on a well-understood background model dominated by radiogenic sources. The detector concept presented here repres…
Background rejection is key to success for future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. To achieve sensitivity to effective Majorana lifetimes of $\sim10^{28}$ years, backgrounds must be controlled to better than 0.1 count per ton per year, beyond the reach of any present technology. In this paper we propose a new method to identify the birth of the barium daughter ion in the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe. The method adapts Single Molecule Fluorescent Imaging, a technique from biochemistry research with demonstrated single ion sensitivity. We explore possible SMFI dyes sui…
The search for neutrinoless double-beta decay is the most sensitive technique to establish the Majorana nature of neutrinos. Two operating experiments that look for such decays in $^{76}$Ge -- GERDA and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR -- have achieved the lowest backgrounds and the best energy resolution in the signal region. These are two of the most important detector characteristics for sensitive searches of this undiscovered decay. The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (LEGEND) Collaboration has formed to pursue a tonne-scale $^{76}$Ge experiment that integra…
We propose a novel charge sensing concept for high-pressure Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay (NLDBD) with ton-scale isotope mass and beyond. A meter-sized plane, tiled with an array of CMOS integrated sensors called Topmetal that directly collect charge without gas avalanche gain, is to be deployed into a high-pressure gaseous TPC with working gases containing suitable NLDBD candidate isotopes such as Xe-136 and Se-82. The Topmetal sensor has an electronic noise <30 e- per pixel, which allows the detector to reach <1% FWHM energy resolution at the NLDB…
Probing neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the primary goals for SNO+, SNOLAB's multi-purpose neutrino detector. In order to achieve this goal the SNO detector has been adapted so that it can be filled with Te-loaded liquid scintillator. During the initial double beta phase the target loading is 0.3% natural Te, which equates to $\sim790$ kg of double beta isotope. Estimating the sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay requires a well understood background model. For SNO+ this is provided by a comprehensive study considering all possible background contributions, whether they origi…
After the pioneering work of the Heidelberg-Moscow (HDM) and International Germanium Experiment (IGEX) groups, the second round of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay searches currently underway has or will improve the life-time limits of double-$β$ decay candidates by a factor of two to three, reaching in the near future the $T_{1/2} = 3 \times 10^{25}$ yr level. This talk will focus on the large-scale experiments GERDA, EXO-200, and KamLAND-Zen, which have reported already lower half-life time limits in excess of $10^{25}$ yr. Special emphasis is given to KamLAND-Zen, which is expected to approach…
The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless $ββ$ Decay (LEGEND) is a future ton-scale experimental program that will search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) in the isotope $^{76}$Ge with an unprecedented sensitivity. To achieve the projected discovery sensitivity at a half-life beyond $10^{28}\,$yr after about ten years of data taking, it is of utmost importance to operate in a background-free environment. This can be supported by using highly integrated readout electronics such as application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology. In this work we investigated t…
The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, an ultra-low background, modular, HPGe detector array with a mass of 44.8-kg (29.7 kg enriched >88% in Ge-76) to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76. The next generation of tonnescale Ge-based neutrinoless double beta decay searches will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is envisioned to demonstrate a path forward to achieve a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value of 2039 keV. The MAJORANA DEMONS…
NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) is a neutrinoless double beta decay experiment located at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC, Spain). Its aim is to demonstrate that the neutrino is a Majorana particle by detecting the neutrinoless double beta decay process in xenon gas enriched in the $^{136}$Xe isotope. The detector technology used in NEXT is that of radiopure high pressure time projection chambers with electroluminescence amplification, which provide excellent energy resolution better than 1$\%$ FWHM in the energy region of interest, topological reconstruction that allo…
SNO+ is a neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) search experiment using 780 tonnes of tellurium-loaded liquid scintillator. The experiment is currently collecting data in the first of three planned phases, in which the detector is filled with ultrapure water. During this phase, the cleanliness of the water can be assayed using in situ measurements of $^{214}$Bi and $^{208}$Tl (daughter nuclei of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th, respectively). These results will both inform preparation for scintillator fill and support water phase physics analyses like the search for invisible nucleon decay modes.
Large detectors employing xenon are a leading technology in existing and planned searches for new physics, including searches for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) and dark matter. While upcoming detectors will employ target masses of a ton or more, further extending gas or liquid phase Xe detectors to the kton scale would enable extremely sensitive next-generation searches for rare phenomena. The key challenge to extending this technology to detectors well beyond the ton scale is the acquisition of the Xe itself. We describe the motivation for extending Xe time projection chambers (TPCs…
The search for neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay is the best way to test lepton number violation and Majorana nature of neutrinos. One of the most promising techniques to discover $0νββ$ decay is by operating High-Purity Ge detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge. The current generation of $^{76}$Ge experiments, GERDA and MAJORANA, lead the field in the achieved energy resolution and ultra-low background. These are two of the most important characteristics for sensitive searches of this undiscovered decay. The next generation of $0νββ$ decay experiments requires more mass and further reduction o…
Neutrinoless double beta decay searches play a major role in determining neutrino properties, in particular the Majorana or Dirac nature of the neutrino and the absolute scale of the neutrino mass. The consequences of these searches go beyond neutrino physics, with implications for Grand Unification and leptogenesis. The \textsc{Majorana} Collaboration is assembling a low-background array of high purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge. The \textsc{Majorana Demonstrator}, which is currently being constructed and commissioned at the Sanford Un…
The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay would resolve the Majorana nature of the neutrino and could provide information on the absolute scale of the neutrino mass. The initial phase of the Majorana experiment, known as the Demonstrator, will house 40 kg of Ge in an ultra-low background shielded environment at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Laboratory in Lead, SD. The objective of the Demonstrator is to determine whether a future 1-tonne experiment can achieve a background goal of one count per tonne-year in a narrow region of interest around the 76Ge neutrinoless double-b…
The search for neutrinoless double beta decay probes lepton number conservation with high sensitivity and investigates the neutrino nature and mass scale. Experiments presently in preparation will cover the quasi-degeneracy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Probing the so-called inverted hierarchy region requires improved sensitivities and next-generation experiments, based either on large expansions of the present searches or on new ideas. We examine here the potential of a novel technology relying on ZnMoO4 scintillating bolometers, which can provide an experiment with background close to…
A liquid scintillator base experiment KamLAND-Zen has set a lower limit on neutrinoless double beta decay half-life, and upgrade project KamLAND-Zen 800 has started in 2019. Unfortunately, this project expects some backgrounds, and one of the main backgrounds is beta/gamma-ray from 214Bi in container of xenon loaded liquid scintillator (mini-balloon). In order to reject the background, we suggest using scintillation film for the future mini-balloon. If we can tag alpha-ray from 214Po by scintillation detection, we can eliminate 214Bi events by delayed coincidence analysis. Recently, it was rep…
We study the sensitivity of large-scale xenon detectors to low-energy solar neutrinos, to coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering and to neutrinoless double beta decay. As a concrete example, we consider the xenon part of the proposed DARWIN (Dark Matter WIMP Search with Noble Liquids) experiment. We perform detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the expected backgrounds, considering realistic energy resolutions and thresholds in the detector. In a low-energy window of 2-30 keV, where the sensitivity to solar pp and $^7$Be-neutrinos is highest, an integrated pp-neutrino rate of 5900 events can be re…
The quest for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) is a promising experimental approach to search for lepton number violation in weak interactions, a key ingredient in generating the matter-antimatter asymmetry through models of Leptogenesis. The $^{136}$Xe-based $0νββ$ experiments KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 currently set the most stringent limits on this process using two very different techniques. Each are preparing the next generation experiment, which will search for $0νββ$ in the parameter space corresponding to the inverted hierarchy for neutrino mass. Both of these techniques scale well…
Large water Cherenkov detectors have been successfully used for decades in high- and low-energy particle physics. Nevertheless, detecting neutrons remains a challenge for such detectors since a neutron capture on a hydrogen atom doesn't release a sufficient amount of gamma energy to be observed efficiently. The use of gadolinium in the form of soluble salts has been explored extensively to remedy this issue, as gadolinium exhibits both a very large neutron capture cross section and a subsequent high-energy gamma cascade. However, in order for large gadolinium-loaded detectors to operate stably…
The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) seeks to discover the neutrinoless double beta ($ββ0ν$) decay of $^{136}$Xe using a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber with electroluminescent amplification. The observation of $ββ0ν$ decay would prove that neutrinos are Majorana particles and that lepton number is not conserved. The NEXT detector concept offers several features of great value for $ββ0ν$-decay searches, including excellent energy resolution, tracking for the active suppression of backgrounds and scalability to large source masses. The initial phase of the NEXT projec…
The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon. Surrounding the liquid xenon cryostat is an outer detector veto system with the primary aim of vetoing neutron single-scatter events in the liquid xenon that could mimic a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter signal. The outer detector consists of approximately 17 tonnes of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator confined to 10 acrylic tanks surrounding the cryostat and 228,000 litres of water as the outermost layer. It will be monitored b…
This article reviews the application of high pressure gas xenon (HPXe) time projection chambers to neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. First, the fundamentals of the technology and the historical development of the field are discussed. Then, the state of the art is presented, including the prospects for the next generation of experiments with masses in the ton scale.
The {\sc Majorana} collaboration is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay using $^{76}$Ge, which has been shown to have a number of advantages in terms of sensitivities and backgrounds. The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay would show that lepton number is violated and that neutrinos are Majorana particles and would simultaneously provide information on neutrino mass. Attaining sensitivities for neutrino masses in the inverted hierarchy region, $15 - 50$ meV, will require large, tonne-scale detectors with extremely low backgrounds, at the level of $\sim$1 count/t-y or lower …
Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double-beta decay, and dark matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 745kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon …
Imaging devices made from an ionization target layer of amorphous selenium (aSe) coupled to a silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel array for charge readout are a promising technology for neutrino physics. The high spatial resolution in a solid-state target provides unparalleled rejection of backgrounds from natural radioactivity in the search for neutrinoless $ββ$ decay and for electron neutrino ($ν_e$) spectroscopy with $^{82}$Se. In this white paper, we summarize the broad scientific program of a large imaging detector with a 10-ton target of $^{82}$Se. We revi…

We propose a new detector concept, GraXe (to be pronounced as grace), to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Xe-136. GraXe combines a popular detection medium in rare-event searches, liquid xenon, with a new, background-free material, graphene. In our baseline design of GraXe, a sphere made of graphene-coated titanium mesh and filled with liquid xenon (LXe) enriched in the Xe-136 isotope is immersed in a large volume of natural LXe instrumented with photodetectors. Liquid xenon is an excellent scintillator, reasonably transparent to its own light. Graphene is transparent over a large …
The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has probed an expanded angular range of the CMB temperature power spectrum. Their recent analysis of the latest cosmological data prefers nonzero neutrino masses, mnu = 0.32+-0.11 eV. This result, if confirmed by the upcoming Planck data, has deep implications on the discovery of the nature of neutrinos. In particular, the values of the effective neutrino mass involved in neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu) are severely constrained for both the direct and inverse hierarchy, making a discovery much more likely. In this paper, we focus in xenon-based bb0nu exper…
LEGEND (Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay) is a ton-scale experimental program to search for neutrinoless double beta ($0 νββ$) decay using high-purity germanium detectors enriched in the isotope $^{76}$Ge. An observation of $0 νββ$ decay would unequivocally prove the existence of lepton number violation and provide insight into the nature of neutrino masses. On-site construction for the first 200-kg phase (LEGEND-200) of the experiment will start at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Laboratory Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy) in mid-2020. In order to …
We study a three stage dark matter and neutrino observatory based on multi-ton two-phase liquid Xe and Ar detectors with sufficiently low backgrounds to be sensitive to WIMP dark matter interaction cross sections down to 10E-47 cm^2, and to provide both identification and two independent measurements of the WIMP mass through the use of the two target elements in a 5:1 mass ratio, giving an expected similarity of event numbers. The same detection systems will also allow measurement of the pp solar neutrino spectrum, the neutrino flux and temperature from a Galactic supernova, and neutrinoless d…
CUORE is a 741 kg array of TeO2 bolometers that will search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. The detector is being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, where it will begin taking data in 2015. The CUORE cryostat will cool several metric tonnes of material to below 1 K and the CUORE detector itself will operate at a typical temperature of 10 mK. At this temperature, the CUORE detector will be the coldest contiguous cubic meter in the known Universe.
KamLAND-Zen reports on a preliminary search for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ^{136}Xe based on 114.8 live-days after the purification of the xenon loaded liquid scintillator. In this data, the problematic ^{110m}Ag background peak identified in previous searches is reduced by more than a factor of 10. By combining the KamLAND-Zen pre- and post-purification data, we obtain a preliminary lower limit on the 0νββdecay half-life of T_{1/2}^{0ν} > 2.6 x 10^{25} yr at 90% C.L. The search sensitivity will be enhanced with additional low background data after the purification. Prospects for furt…
We demonstrate that the application of an external magnetic field could lead to an improved background rejection in neutrinoless double-beta (0nbb) decay experiments using a high pressure xenon (HPXe) TPC. HPXe chambers are capable of imaging electron tracks, a feature that enhances the separation between signal events (the two electrons emitted in the 0nbb decay of 136Xe) and background events, arising chiefly from single electrons of kinetic energy compatible with the end-point of the 0nbb decay (Qbb ). Applying an external magnetic field of sufficiently high intensity (in the range of 0.5-1…
The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA Demonstrator, an ultra-low background, 40-kg modular high purity Ge detector array to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in Ge. In view of the next generation of tonne-scale Ge-based neutrinoless double-beta decay searches that will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region, a major goal of the Demonstrator is to demonstrate a path forward to achieving a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value at 2039 keV. The current status of the Demonstrator is discus…
New experimental research programs in the field of neutrino physics are calling for new detectors with large masses, high energy resolution and good background rejection capabilities. This paper presents a novel hybrid organic/inorganic scintillator, which is able to improve on all three aspects simultaneously. This scintillator consists of microscopic grains of inorganic crystals suspended in an organic scintillating carrier medium. Due to multiple scattering off the crystals, this scintillator appears opaque over longer distances and is intended for use in specialized detectors. Thanks to th…
Searching for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) is now regarded as the topmost promising technique to explore the nature of neutrinos after the discovery of neutrino masses in oscillation experiments. PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China Jin Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at bo…
We report on the design and performance of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) "Screener", a small liquid scintillator detector consisting of $\approx 23$ kg of LAB-based gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (GdLS) to be used in the LZ Outer Detector. The Outer Detector will be filled with 17.3 tonnes of GdLS and will surround the central liquid xenon time projection chamber of LZ. Its primary function will be to veto neutron single-scatter events in the liquid xenon which could mimic a WIMP dark matter signal. To meet the requirements for the Outer Detector, the radioimpurity levels in the GdLS must be kept…
The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24\,m short baseline at J-PARC. The next generation of tonne-scale Ge-based neutrinoless double beta decay searches will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region. The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is envisioned to demonstrate a path forward to achieve a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value of 2039 keV. AXEL is a high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0n2b) search. The AXEL has a unique readout system called ELCC which has a cellular structure and photosensors to detect electroluminescence light produced by ionization electrons. We demonstrated the performance of the ELCC with a small prototype detector (AXEL-HP10L). The obtained energy resolution corresponds to 0.82 -- 1.74% (FWHM) at the 0n2b Q-value. We are constructing a new prototype (AXEL-HP180L) in order to study the energy resolution at the Q-value of 0n2b with a new design of ELCC with uni…
The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector will be filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $γ$-catcher and outer veto volumes. JSNS$^{2}$ has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experime…
The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, an ultra-low background, 40-kg modular HPGe detector array to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 76Ge. We present an improved search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decay of $^{136}$Xe in the KamLAND-Zen experiment. Owing to purification of the xenon-loaded liquid scintillator, we achieved a significant reduction of the $^{110m}$Ag contaminant identified in previous searches. Combining the results from the first and second phase, we obtain a lower limit for the $0νββ$ decay half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0ν} > 1.07 \times 10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., an almost sixfold improvement over previous limits. Using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations, the corresponding upper limits on the ef…

CUPID will be built on experience, expertise and lessons learned in CUORE, and will exploit the current CUORE infrastructure as much as possible. In order to achieve its ambitious science goals, CUPID aims to dramatically reduce the backgrounds in the region of interest introducing a high efficiently $α$/$β$ discrimination techniques, also demonstrated …
