The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for neutrino oscillations over a 24\,m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector is filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) and both the intermediate $γ$-catcher and the optically separated outer veto are filled with un-loaded LS. Optical photons from scintillation are observed by 120 Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). A total of 130 PMTs for the JSNS2 experiment were both donated by other experiments and purchased from Hamamatsu. Donated PMTs were purchased around 10 years ago, therefore JSNS$^{2}$ did pre-calibration of the PMTs including the purchased PMTs. 123 PMTs demonstrated acceptable performance for the JSNS$^{2}$ experiment, and 120 PMTs were installed in the detector.
The JSNS$^2$ experiment is aimed to search for sterile neutrino oscillations using a neutrino beam from muon decays at rest. The JSNS$^2$ detector contains 17 tons of 0.1\% gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) as a neutrino target. Detector construction was completed in the spring of 2020. A slow control and monitoring system (SCMS) was implemented for reliable control and quick monitoring of the detector operational status and environmental conditions. It issues an alarm if any of the monitored parameters exceed a preset acceptable range. The SCMS monitors the high voltage (HV) of …
The JSNS2 (J-PARC E56) experiment aims to search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC Materials and Life Sciences Experimental Facility (MLF).After the submission of a proposal to the J-PARC PAC, stage-1 approval was granted to the JSNS2 experiment. The approval followed a series of background measurements which were performed in 2014. Subsequent for stage-1 approval, the JSNS2 collaboration has made continuous efforts to write a Technical Design Report (TDR).This TDR will include two major items as discussed in the previous status report for the 20th J-PARC PAC: (1) A realistic detector locati…
The JSNS^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV^2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS^2 detector is located 24 m a…
This paper describes the design and the construction of the stainless steel tank of the JSNS$^2$ detector. The leakage was examined using water and gas after the construction. The new sealing technique with liquid gasket was developed, and its sealing capability was evaluated quantitatively. The result shows over 5 times better value than the tolerance level of leakage. The acceleration measurement during the transportation of the tank shows adequate robustness. These tests prove that the stainless steel tank is feasible to use the real experiment.
The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment will search for neutrino oscillations over a 24 m short baseline at J-PARC. The JSNS$^{2}$ inner detector will be filled with 17 tons of gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator (LS) with an additional 31 tons of unloaded LS in the intermediate $γ$-catcher and outer veto volumes. JSNS$^{2}$ has chosen Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) as an organic solvent because of its chemical properties. The unloaded LS was produced at a refurbished facility, originally used for scintillator production by the RENO experime…
The JSNS$^2$ experiment aims to search for the existence of neutrino oscillations with $Δ{\rm m}^2$ near 1 eV$^2$ at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). A 3~GeV 1~MW proton beam incident on a mercury target produces an intense neutrino source from muon decay at rest ($μ^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} + \barν_μ + ν_{e}$). The oscillation to be searched for is $\barν_μ$ to $\barν_{e}$, detected via the inverse beta decay~(IBD) reaction ($\barν_{e} + p \rightarrow e^{+} + n$), which is then distinctively tagged by gammas from neutron capture of Gadolinium. The first of two d…
The JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC E56) experiment aims to search for a sterile neutrino at the J-PARC Materials and Life Sciences Experimental Facility (MLF). After the submission of a proposal to the J-PARC PAC, Stage-1 approval was granted to the JSNS$^2$ experiment on April 2015.This approval followed a series of background measurements which were performed in 2014. Recently, funding (the grant-in-aid for scientific research (S)) in Japan for building one 25~ton fiducial volume detector module was approved for the experiment. Therefore, we aim to start the experiment with one detector in JFY2018-2019. W…

The search for sterile neutrinos is currently one of the hottest topics in neutrino physics. The JSNS$^2$ experiment aims to search for the existence of neutrino oscillations with $Δm^2$ near 1 eV$^2$ at the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). A 1 MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense neutrino beam from muon decay at rest. Neutrinos come predominantly from $μ^+$ decay: $μ^…
On April 2015, the J-PARC E56 (JSNS2: J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search using neutrinos from J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment officially obtained stage-1 approval from J-PARC. We have since started to perform liquid scintillator R&D for improving energy resolution and fast neutron rejection. Also, we are studying Avalanche Photo-Diodes (SiPM) inside the liquid scintillator. In addition to the R&D work, a background measurement for the proton beam bunch timing using a small liquid scintillator volume was planned, and the safety discussions for the measurement have been done. This repor…

The MiniBooNE neutrino oscillation experiment at Fermilab uses 1520 8-inch PMTs: 1197 PMTs are Hamamatsu model R1408 and the rest are model R5912. All of the PMTs were tested to qualify for inclusion in the detector, sorted according to their charge and time resolutions and dark rates. Seven PMTs underwent additional low light level tests. The relative detection efficiency as a function of incident angle for seven additional PMTs was measured. Procedures and results are presented.
In this article we present the large photo-multiplier tube (PMT) afterpulse measurement results of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment. Totally 11 dynode-PMTs (R12860) from Hamamatsu company and 150 micro-channel plate PMTs (MCP-PMTs, GDB-6201) from NNVT company were tested, an afterpulse model is built according to the afterpulse time distribution and probability of occurrence for these two types of PMTs. The average ratio between the total afterpulse charge with the delay between 0.5 $μ$ s and 20 $μ$ s to the primary pulse charge is 5.6%(13.2%) for the tested MCP-PMTs…
The Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) is a neutrino project with a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector located at 700-m underground. The large 20-inch PMTs are one of the crucial components of the JUNO experiment aiming to precision neutrino measurements with better than 3% energy resolution at 1 MeV. The excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume provide many exciting opportunities for addressing important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With the container #D at JUNO Pan-Asia PMT testing and potting station, the features of waterproof potted 20-inch…
The results of tests of more than 2200 ETL9351 type PMTs for the Borexino detector with the PMT test facility are presented. The PMTs characteristics relevant for the proper detector operation and modeling are discussed in detail.
Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in neutrino and other experiments for the detection of weak light. To date PMTs are the most sensitive single photon detector per unit area. In addition to the quantum efficiency for photon detection, there are a number of other specifications, such as rate and amplitude of after-pulses, dark noise rate, transit time spread, radioactive background of glass, peak-to-valley ratio, etc. All affect the photon detection and hence the physics goals. In addition, cost is another major factor for large experiments. It is important to know how to properly ta…
A facility to test the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for the solar neutrino detector Borexino was built at the Gran Sasso laboratory. Using the facility 2200 PMTs with optimal characteristics were selected from the 2350 delivered from the manufacturer. The details of the hardware used are presented.
The 20kt Liquid Scintillator (LS) JUNO detector is being constructed by the International Collaboration in China, with the primary goal of addressing the question of neutrino mass ordering (hierarchy). The main challenge for JUNO is to achieve a record energy resolution, ~3% at 1MeV of energy released in the LS, which is required to perform the neutrino mass hierarchy determination. About 20 000 large 20-inch PMTs with high Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) and good photocathode uniformity will ensure an approximately 80% surface coverage of the JUNO detector. The JUNO collaboration is prepari…
Modern precision neutrino experiments like Double Chooz require a highly efficient trigger system in order to reduce systematic uncertainties. The trigger and timing system of the Double Chooz experiment was designed according to this goal. The Double Chooz trigger system is driven by the basic idea of triggering on multiple thresholds according to the total visible energy and additionally triggering on the number of active photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the detector. To do so, the trigger system continuously monitors the analogue signals from all PMTs in the detector. The amplitudes of these…
Hyper-Kamiokande, scheduled to begin construction as soon as 2020, is a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector, based on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. It will serve as a far detector, 295 km away, of a long baseline neutrino experiment for the upgraded J-PARC beam in Japan. It will also be a detector capable of observing --- far beyond the sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector --- proton decay, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astronomical sources. An Outer Detector (OD) consisting of PMTs mounted behind the inner detector PMTs and facing outw…
This report highlights two different types of cross-talk in the photodetectors of the miniTimeCube neutrino experiment. The miniTimeCube detector has 24 $8 \times 8$-anode Photonis MCP-PMTs Planacon XP85012, totalling 1536 individual pixels viewing the 2-liter cube of plastic scintillator.
26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of $\sim$1,000~PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were imp…
Since the early days of experimental particle physics photomultipliers (PMTs) have played an important role in the detector design. Thanks to their capability of fast photon counting, PMTs are extensively used in the new-generation of astroparticle physics experiments, such as air, ice and water Cherenkov detectors. Small size PMTs ($\leq $ 3 inches diameter) show little sensitivity to the Earth magnetic field, small transit time, stable transit time spread; the price per photocathode area is less comparing to the one for the large area PMTs, typically used so far in such applications. Togethe…
The main goal of the JUNO experiment is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. To achieve this, an extraordinary energy resolution of at least $3\,\%$ at $1\,$MeV is required for which all parts of the JUNO detector need to meet certain quality criteria. This is relevant in particular for those which are related to the energy resolution of the detector, such as the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to be deployed in JUNO. This paper presents the setup and performance of a dedicated PMT mass testing facility to examine and characterize the performance of the 20-inch JUNO PMTs. Its quasi-in…
The goal of Double Chooz experiment is a precise measurement of the last unknown mixing angle theta_13 using two identical detectors placed at far and near sites from Chooz reactor cores. The detector is optimized for reactor-neutrino detection using specially developed 10-inch PMTs. We developed two types of measurement systems and evaluated 400 PMTs before the installation. Those PMTs fulfill our requirements, and a half of those have been installed to the far detector in 2009. The character and performance data of the PMTs are stored in a database and will be referenced in analysis and MC s…
We report on the progress in characterization of the Hamamatsu model R11410-21 Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for XENON1T dark matter experiment. The absolute quantum efficiency (QE) of the PMT was measured at low temperatures down to -110 $^0$C (a typical the PMT operation temperature in liquid xenon detectors) in a spectral range from 154.5 nm to 400 nm. At -110 $^0$C the absolute QE increased by 10-15\% at 175 nm compared to that measured at room temperature. A new low power consumption, low radioactivity voltage divider for the PMTs is being developed. The measurement results showed that the…
The Neutrinos Angra Experiment has completed a major step by finishing the comissioning of the detector and the data acquisition system at the experimental site located in the Angra dos Reis nuclear power plant. The experiment consists of a water-based detector and associated electronics, both designed with the goal of detecting the electron antineutrinos produced by the nuclear reactor. The detection is possible due to the Inverse Beta Decay, where the final products in the water are photons in the UV-to-visible range of the spectrum. The assembled detector comprises three active volumes fill…
In low background and low threshold particle astrophysics experiments using observation of Cherenkov or scintillation light it is common to use pairs or arrays of photomultipliers operated in coincidence. In such circumstances, for instance in dark matter and neutrino experiments, unexpected PMT noise events have been observed, probably arising from generation of light from one PMT being detected by one or more other PMTs. We describe here experimental investigation of such coincident noise events and development of new techniques to remove them using novel pulse shape discrimination procedure…
This paper describes the design of the active muon veto subsystem for the MiniCLEAN dark matter direct detection experiment at SNOLAB in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The water-filled veto is instrumented with 48 PMTs which are read out by front end electronics to time multiplex 48 photomultiplier channels into 6 digitizer channels and provide an instantaneous hit sum across the subsystem (N-Hit) for the veto trigger. We describe the primary system components: the PMTs, the support structure, the front-end electronics, and the data acquisition system.
The CHIPS experiment will comprise a 10 kton water Cherenkov detector in an open mine pit in northern Minnesota, USA. The detector has been simulated using a full GEANT4 simulation and a series of event reconstruction algorithms have been developed to exploit the charge and time information from all of the PMTs. A comparison of simulated CCQE nu_mu and nu_e interactions using 10 inch and 3 inch PMTs is presented, alongside a comparison of 10% and 6% photocathode coverage for 3 inch PMTs. The studies demonstrate that the required selection efficiency and purity of charged-current nu_e interacti…

After an introduction to neutrino physics, with emphasis on neutrino oscillation, the T2K experiment at the Main Ring neutrino beam line and its peripheral experiments are introduced. Also future prospects of the Japanese long-baseline oscillation experiments are given. In addition, a new attempt to search for sterile neutrinos at the J-PARC MLF, JSNS$^2$ experiment, is introduced.
It is critical to construct an accurate optical model of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in many applications to describe the angular and spectral responses of the photon detection efficiency (PDE) of the PMTs in their working media. In this study, we propose a new PMT optical model to describe both light interactions with the PMT window and optical processes inside PMTs with reasonable accuracy based on the optics theory and a GEANT4-based simulation toolkit. The proposed model builds a relationship between the PDE and the underlying processes that the PDE relies on. This model also provides a t…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multipurpose neutrino-oscillation experiment, with a 20 kiloton liquid scintillator detector of unprecedented 3\% energy resolution (at 1 MeV) at 700-meter deep underground. There are ~18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the central detector with an optical coverage greater than 75%. Control of the systematics of the energy response is crucial to archive the designed energy resolution as well as to reach 1% precision of the absolute energy scale. The detected number of photoelectrons in each PMT differs by two orders of magni…
The main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering with a 20\,kt liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch PMT is crucial as one of JUNO key instruments to realize an excellent energy resolution of at least 3\,\% at 1\,MeV. The knowledge on PMT's characterisation and feature is critical for detector performance understanding. Large pulses from PMT dark count such as from flasher or others are one of the serious concerns for detector noise control. Focusing on the large pulses from 20-inch PMT dark count, this paper is trying to investigate the causes by measurement…
Detector examples discussed: MRPCs, MCP-PMTs, Diamond detectors, SiPMTs, Low and high gain Avalanche diodes (LGADs) and Micromegas. We specifically discuss issues such as single pixel vs. multi-pixel tests, small test vs. large physics system results and hidden problems people usually do not want to talk about.
An ASIC named CATIROC (Charge And Time Integrated Read Out Chip) has been developed for the next-generation neutrino experiments using a large number of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Each CATIROC provides the time and the charge measurements for 16 configurable input channels operating in trigger-less mode. Originally designed for the light emission in water Cherenkov detectors, we show in this paper that its use can be extended to liquid-scintillator based experiments. The $\sim$26000 3-inch PMTs of the JUNO experiment, under construction in China, is a case in point. This paper describes the…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering and precisely measure oscillation parameters. It is being built in South China at a depth of 700~m underground and comprises a central detector, water Cerenkov detector and top tracker. The central detector is designed to detect anti-neutrinos with an energy resolution of 3\% at 1~MeV, using a 20 kt liquid scintillator target with 17,612 20-inch PMTs and 25,600 3-inch PMTs. The scintillator provides a light yield of approximately 10,000 photons per MeV. Monte Carlo simulation is a crucial t…
Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are often used in low-background particle physics experiments, which rely on an excellent response to single-photon signals and stable long-term operation. In particular, the Hamamatsu R11410 model is the light sensor of choice for liquid xenon dark matter experiments, including XENONnT. The same PMT model was also used for the predecessor, XENON1T, where issues affecting its long-term operation were observed. Here, we report on an improved PMT testing procedure which ensures optimal performance in XENONnT. Using both new and upgraded facilities, we tested 368 new …
In the framework of the development of the SWGO experiment we have performed a detailed study of the single unit of an extensive air shower observatory based on an array of water Cherenkov detectors. Indeed, one of the possible water Cherenkov detector unit configurations for SWGO consists of tanks, and to reach a high detection efficiency and discrimination capability between gamma-ray and hadronic air showers, different tank designs are under investigation. In this study, we considered double-layer tanks with several sizes, shapes and number of photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs). Muons, electrons…
Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) are semiconductor-based photo-detectors with performances similar to the traditional Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs). An increasing number of experiments dedicated to particle detection in colliders, accelerators, astrophysics, neutrino and rare-event physics involving scintillators are using SiPMs as photodetectors. They are gradually substituting PMTs in many applications, especially where low voltages are required and high magnetic field is present. Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., one of leading producers of photo-detectors, in the last year introduced the S14160 s…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose neutrino experiment designed to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy using a central detector (CD), which contains 20 kton liquid scintillator (LS) surrounded by about 17,000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Due to the large fiducial volume and huge number of PMTs, the simulation of a muon particle passing through the CD with the Geant4 toolkit becomes an extremely computation-intensive task. This paper presents a fast simulation implementation using a so-called voxel method: for scintillation photons generated in a certain LS…
