Hyper-Kamiokande, scheduled to begin construction as soon as 2020, is a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector, based on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. It will serve as a far detector, 295 km away, of a long baseline neutrino experiment for the upgraded J-PARC beam in Japan. It will also be a detector capable of observing --- far beyond the sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector --- proton decay, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astronomical sources.
An Outer Detector (OD) consisting of PMTs mounted behind the inner detector PMTs and facing outwards to view the outer shell of the cylindrical tank, would provide topological information to identify interactions originating from particles outside the inner detector. Any optimization would lead to a significant improvement for the physics goals of the experiment, which are the measurement of the CP leptonic phase and the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy.
An original setup using small 3" PMTs is being designed for the Hyper-Kamiokande OD. They would give better redundancy, spatial, and angular resolution, as they would be twice or three times more photosensors that the original 8" design proposal of the experiment, and for a reduce cost. Several 3" PMTs candidates considered for the Hyper-Kamiokande OD have been characterized at Queen Mary University London. They all show a very low dark counts and good collection efficiency, which makes them excellent choice to be used in the experiment.
In this article we present the large photo-multiplier tube (PMT) afterpulse measurement results of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment. Totally 11 dynode-PMTs (R12860) from Hamamatsu company and 150 micro-channel plate PMTs (MCP-PMTs, GDB-6201) from NNVT company were tested, an afterpulse model is built according to the afterpulse time distribution and probability of occurrence for these two types of PMTs. The average ratio between the total afterpulse charge with the delay between 0.5 $μ$ s and 20 $μ$ s to the primary pulse charge is 5.6%(13.2%) for the tested MCP-PMTs…

It is designed to reach an energy resolution of 3% at 1 MeV with the highest ever PMT coverage, using two types of 20 inch phototubes: MCP-PMT from NNVT and dynode-PMT from Hamamatsu. In this article, the gain and charge response of the MCP and dynode PMTs are investigated with the study of JUNO Central Detector prototype. The linearity of the MCP-PMT charge output is measured too to check …
The main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering with a 20\,kt liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch PMT is crucial as one of JUNO key instruments to realize an excellent energy resolution of at least 3\,\% at 1\,MeV. The knowledge on PMT's characterisation and feature is critical for detector performance understanding. Large pulses from PMT dark count such as from flasher or others are one of the serious concerns for detector noise control. Focusing on the large pulses from 20-inch PMT dark count, this paper is trying to investigate the causes by measurement…
The CHIPS experiment will comprise a 10 kton water Cherenkov detector in an open mine pit in northern Minnesota, USA. The detector has been simulated using a full GEANT4 simulation and a series of event reconstruction algorithms have been developed to exploit the charge and time information from all of the PMTs. A comparison of simulated CCQE nu_mu and nu_e interactions using 10 inch and 3 inch PMTs is presented, alongside a comparison of 10% and 6% photocathode coverage for 3 inch PMTs. The studies demonstrate that the required selection efficiency and purity of charged-current nu_e interacti…

The main goal of the JUNO experiment is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. To achieve this, an extraordinary energy resolution of at least $3\,\%$ at $1\,$MeV is required for which all parts of the JUNO detector need to meet certain quality criteria. This is relevant in particular for those which are related to the energy resolution of the detector, such as the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to be deployed in JUNO. This paper presents the setup and performance of a dedicated PMT mass testing facility to examine and characterize the performance of the 20-inch JUNO PMTs. Its quasi-in…

The detector is optimized for reactor-neutrino detection using specially developed 10-inch PMTs. We developed two types of measurement systems and evaluated 400 PMTs before the installation. Those PMTs fulfill our requirements, and a half of those have been installed to the far detector in 2009. The character and performance data of the PMTs are stored in a database and will be referenced in analysis and MC s…
Since the early days of experimental particle physics photomultipliers (PMTs) have played an important role in the detector design. Thanks to their capability of fast photon counting, PMTs are extensively used in the new-generation of astroparticle physics experiments, such as air, ice and water Cherenkov detectors. Small size PMTs ($\leq $ 3 inches diameter) show little sensitivity to the Earth magnetic field, small transit time, stable transit time spread; the price per photocathode area is less comparing to the one for the large area PMTs, typically used so far in such applications. Togethe…

Ton-scale liquid xenon detectors operated in two-phase mode are proposed and being constructed recently to explore the favored parameter space for the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter. To achieve a better light collection eff ciency while limiting the number of electronics channels compared to the previous generation detectors, large-size photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) such as the 3-inch-diameter R11410 from Hamamatsu are suggested to replace the 1-inch-square R8520 PMTs. In a two-phase xenon dark matter detector, two PMT arrays on the top and bottom are usually used. In …
The 20kt Liquid Scintillator (LS) JUNO detector is being constructed by the International Collaboration in China, with the primary goal of addressing the question of neutrino mass ordering (hierarchy). The main challenge for JUNO is to achieve a record energy resolution, ~3% at 1MeV of energy released in the LS, which is required to perform the neutrino mass hierarchy determination. About 20 000 large 20-inch PMTs with high Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) and good photocathode uniformity will ensure an approximately 80% surface coverage of the JUNO detector. The JUNO collaboration is prepari…

We report a 1.65 times increase of the PMT signal and a simple procedure of application of a new wavelength shifting (WLS) paint for PMTs with non-UV-transparent windows. Samples of four different WLS paints, made from hydrocarbon polymers and organic fluors, were tested on a 5-inch PMT (ET 9390KB) using Cherenkov radiation produced in fused silica disks by $^{106}$Ru electrons on a `table-top' setup. The best performing paint was employed on two different types of 5-inch PMTs (ET 9390KB and XP4572B), installed in atmospheric pressure CO$_2$ gas Cherenkov detectors, and tested using GeV electr…

Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory designed a protection structure for each 20-inch PMT, consisting of a top cover, a bottom cover, and their connection. This paper introduces the requirement and design of the PMT protection system, including the material selection, investigation of manufacture techn…

More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents …

Future large water Cherenkov and scintillator detectors have been proposed for measurements of long baseline neutrino oscillations, proton decay, supernova and solar neutrinos. To ensure cost-effectiveness and optimize scientific reach, one of the critical requirements for such detectors are large-area, high performance photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). One candidate for such a device is the Hamamatsu R11780, a 12" PMT that is available in both standard and high quantum efficiency versions. Measurements of the single photoelectron response characteristics, relative efficiencies of the standard and…

In neutrino experiments, hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are often used to cover large surfaces or volumes to maximize the photocathode coverage with a minimum number of channels. Instrumentation is often coarse, and neutrino event reconstruction and particle identification (PID) is usually done through the morphology of PMT hits. In future neutrino experiments, it may be desirable to perform PID from a few hits, or even a single hit, by utilizing pulse shape information. In this report, we study the principle of pulse shape PID using a single 10-inch hemispherical PMT in a spherica…
