Let G be a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group, and let X denote the moduli space of G-valued representations of a rank r free group. We first characterize the singularities in X, extending a theorem of Richardson and proving a Mumford-type result about topological singularities; this resolves conjectures of Florentino-Lawton. In particular, we compute the codimension of the orbifold singular locus using facts about Borel-de Siebenthal subgroups. We then use the codimension bound to calculate higher homotopy groups of the smooth locus of X, proving conjectures of Florentino-Lawton-Ramras. Lastly, using the earlier analysis of Borel-de Siebenthal subgroups, we prove a conjecture of Sikora about centralizers of irreducible representations in Lie groups.
In this short note we show that the homotopy category of smooth compactifications of smooth algebraic varieties is equivalent to the homotopy category of smooth varieties over a field of characteristic zero. As an application we show that the functor sending a variety to the p-th step of the Hodge filtration of its complex cohomology is representable in the homotopy category of simplicial presheaves on smooth complex varieties. The main motivation are recent applications of homotopy theory to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology theories.
Let G be a real reductive algebraic group with maximal compact subgroup K, and let F be a rank r free group. Here, we summarize the construction of a natural strong deformation retraction from the space of closed orbits in Hom(F,G)/G to the orbit space Hom(F,K)/K. In particular, these spaces have the same homotopy type.
We construct a motivic homotopy theory for rigid analytic varieties with the rigid analytic affine line $\mathbb{A} ^1_\mathrm{rig}$ as an interval object. This motivic homotopy theory is inspired from, but not equal to, Ayoub's motivic homotopy theory for rigid analytic varieties. Working in the so constructed homotopy theory, we prove that a homotopy classification of vector bundles of rank $n$ over rigid analytic quasi-Stein spaces follows from $\mathbb{A}^1_\mathrm{rig}$-homotopy invariance of vector bundles. This $\mathbb{A}^1_\mathrm{rig}$-homotopy invariance is equivalent to a rigid ana…
Borrowing a reduction principle to a recent preprint of G. Faltings (toroidal resolution of some matrix singularities, 1999), we use Lafforgue's compactification of PGL_r^{N+1}/PGL_r to construct a canonical log-smooth toroidal resolution for the bad reduction in a prime p of Shimura varieties of unitary and symplectic type with parahoric level structures at p. Using this result, non-canonical semi-stable resolutions over Z_p[p^{1/ν}] can be derived.
A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove so…
We survey some topics in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. Our main goal is to highlight the interplay between ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory and affine algebraic geometry, focusing on the varieties that are "contractible" from various standpoints.
This survey article explains the construction of Rapoport-Zink local models and their use in understanding various questions relating to the singularities in the reduction modulo p of certain Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at p.
We study the homotopy type of the simplicial set of continuous semi-algebraic simplexes of an algebraic variety defined over a real closed field, which we will call the real homotopy type. We prove an analogue of the theorem of Artin-Mazur comparing the real homotopy type with the étale homotopy type. This paper is part one of a sequence of papers on this topic.
Let X be a complex projective variety of dimension n with only isolated normal singularities. In this paper we prove, using mixed Hodge theory, that if the link of each singular point of X is (n-2)-connected, then X is a formal topological space. This result applies to a large class of examples, such as normal surface singularities, varieties with ordinary multiple points, hypersurfaces with isolated singularities and more generally, complete intersections with isolated singularities. We obtain analogous results for contractions of subvarieties.
We study homotopy rational points of Brauer-Severi varieties over fields of characteristic zero. We are particularly interested if a Brauer-Severi variety admitting a homotopy rational point splits. The analogue statement turns out to be true for open subvarieties of twisted hyperplane arrangements. In the complete case, the obstruction turns out to be the pullback of the Chern class of a generator of the Picard group along the homotopy rational point. Moreover, we will show that every Brauer-Severi variety over a $p$-adic field with $p$-primary period admits a homotopy rational point.
We start to study the problem of classifying smooth proper varieties over a field k from the standpoint of A^1-homotopy theory. Motivated by the topological theory of surgery, we discuss the problem of classifying up to isomorphism all smooth proper varieties having a specified A^1-homotopy type. Arithmetic considerations involving the sheaf of A^1-connected components lead us to introduce several different notions of connectedness in A^1-homotopy theory. We provide concrete links between these notions, connectedness of points by chains of affine lines, and various rationality properties of al…
Let G be a connected, complex reductive Lie group with maximal compact subgroup K, and let X denote the moduli space of G- or K-valued representations of a rank r free group. In this article, we develop methods for studying the low-dimensional homotopy groups of these spaces and of their subspaces Y of irreducible representations. Our main result is that when G = GL(n,C) or SL(n,C), the second homotopy group of X is trivial. The proof depends on a new general position-type result in a singular setting. This result is proven in the Appendix and may be of independent interest. We also obtain new…
Homotopy continuation provides a numerical tool for computing the equivalence of a smooth variety in an intersection product. Intersection theory provides a theoretical tool for relating the equivalence of a smooth variety in an intersection product to the degrees of the Chern classes of the variety. A combination of these tools leads to a numerical method for computing the degrees of Chern classes of smooth projective varieties in P^n. We illustrate the approach through several worked examples.
We study the Galois actions on the l-adic schematic and Artin-Mazur homotopy groups of algebraic varieties. For proper varieties of good reduction over a local field K, we show that the l-adic schematic homotopy groups are mixed representations explicitly determined by the Galois action on cohomology of Weil sheaves, whenever l is not equal to the residue characteristic p of K. For quasi-projective varieties of good reduction, there is a similar characterisation involving the Gysin spectral sequence. When l=p, a slightly weaker result is proved by comparing the crystalline and p-adic schematic…
We show that if X is any proper complex variety, there is a weight decomposition on the real schematic homotopy type, in the form of an algebraic G_m-action. This extends to a real Hodge structure, in the form of a discrete C^*-action, such that C^* x X -> X^{sch} is real analytic. If the fundamental group is algebraically good, and the higher homotopy groups have finite rank, this gives bigraded decompositions on the complexified homotopy groups. For smooth proper varieties, the Hodge structure can be recovered from the cohomology ring with coefficients in the universal semisimple local syste…
Suppose F=W(k)[1/p] where W(k) is the ring of Witt vectors with coefficients in algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>2. We construct integral theory of p-adic semi-stable representations of the absolute Galois group of F with Hodge-Tate weights from [0,p). This modification of Breuil's theory results in the following application in the spirit of Shafarevich's Conjecture. If Y is a projective algebraic variety over the field of rational numbers with good reduction modulo all primes different from 3 and semi-stable reduction modulo 3 then for the Hodge numbers of the complexification…
We study some properties of A^1-homotopy groups: geometric interpretations of connectivity, excision results, and a re-interpretation of quotients by free actions of connected solvable groups in terms of covering spaces in the sense of A^1-homotopy theory. These concepts and results are well-suited to the study of certain quotients via geometric invariant theory. As a case study in the geometry of solvable group quotients, we investigate A^1-homotopy groups of smooth toric varieties. We give simple combinatorial conditions (in terms of fans) guaranteeing vanishing of low degree A^1-homotopy gr…
We consider the inclusion of the space of algebraic (regular) maps between real algebraic varieties in the space of all continuous maps. For a certain class of real algebraic varieties, which include real projective spaces, it is well known that the space of real algebraic maps is a dense subset of the space of all continuous maps. Our first result shows that, for this class of varieties, the inclusion is also a homotopy equivalence. After proving this, we restrict the class of varieties to real projective spaces. In this case, the space of algebraic maps has a ` minimum degree\rq filtration b…
We study aspects of the A^1-homotopy classification problem in dimensions >= 3 and, to this end, we investigate the problem of computing A^1-homotopy groups of some A^1-connected smooth varieties of dimension >=. Using these computations, we construct pairs of A^1-connected smooth proper varieties all of whose A^1-homotopy groups are abstractly isomorphic, yet which are not A^1-weakly equivalent. The examples come from pairs of Zariski locally trivial projective space bundles over projective spaces and are of the smallest possible dimension. Projectivizations of vector bundles give rise to A^1…
We give a characterization of all complete smooth toric varieties whose rational homotopy is of elliptic type. All such toric varieties of complex dimension not more than three are explicitly described.
Let $B(Λ)$ be a level $\ell$ highest weight crystal of the quantum affine algebra $U_q(A_n^{(1)})$. We construct an explicit crystal isomorphism between the geometric realization $\gB(Λ)$ of the crystal $B(Λ)$ using quiver varieties and the path realization $\mathcal{P}^{\rm ad}(Λ)$ arising from the adjoint crystal $\Bad{\ell}$ of level $\ell$.
This paper addresses weak approximation for rationally connected varieties defined over the function field of a curve, especially at places of bad reduction. Our approach entails analyzing the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of singular reductions of the variety. As an application, we prove weak approximation for cubic surfaces with square-free discriminant.
Let $E$ be a quadratic imaginary field and let $p$ be a prime which is inert in $E.$ We study three types of Picard modular surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ and the morphisms between them. The first Picard surface, denoted $S$, parametrizes triples $(A,ϕ,ι)$ comprised of an abelian threefold $A$ with an action $ι$ of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{E}$, and a principal polarization $ϕ$. The second surface, $S_{0}(p)$, parametrizes, in addition, a suitably restricted choice of a subgroup $H\subset A[p]$ of rank $p^{2}$. The third Picard surface, $\widetilde{S}$, parametrizes triples $…
We prove analogs of Whitehead's theorem (from algebraic topology) for both the Chow groups and for the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves: a morphism between smooth projective varieties whose pushforward is an isomorphism on the Chow groups, or on the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves, is an isomorphism. As a corollary, we show that there are no nontrivial naive $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy equivalences between smooth projective varieties.
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex quasi-projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. The mixed Hodge structures can thus be recovered from the Gysin spectral sequence of cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, th…
In each dimension n>2 there are many projective simplicial toric varieties whose Grothendieck groups of vector bundles are at least as big as the ground field. In particular, the conjecture that the Grothendieck groups of locally trivial sheaves and coherent sheaves on such varieties are rationally isomorphic fails badly.
Extending a result of Schröer on a Grothendieck question in the context of complex analytic spaces, we prove that the surjectivity of the Brauer map $δ: Br(X) \rightarrow H_{\rm ét}^2(X,\mathbb{G}_{m, X})_{\rm tor}$ for algebraic schemes depends on their étale homotopy type. We use properties of algebraic $K(π, 1)$ spaces to apply this to some classes of proper and smooth algebraic schemes. In particular we recover a result of Hoobler and Berkovich for abelian varieties. Further, we give an additional condition for the surjectivity of $δ$ which involves pro-universal covers. All proposed condi…
We study the homotopy types of complements of arrangements of n transverse planes in R^4, obtaining a complete classification for n <= 6, and lower bounds for the number of homotopy types in general. Furthermore, we show that the homotopy type of a 2-arrangement in R^4 is not determined by the cohomology ring, thereby answering a question of Ziegler. The invariants that we use are derived from the characteristic varieties of the complement. The nature of these varieties illustrates the difference between real and complex arrangements.
Our main theorem is that the inclusion of a Birkhoff variety in the affine Grassmannian is a homotopy equivalence. We also construct analogues of tubular neighborhoods for Birkhoff and Schubert varieties. We include some observations on torus-equivariant cohomology.
After surveying higher K-theory of toric varieties, we present Totaro's old (c. 1997) unpublished result on expressing the corresponding homotopy theory via singular cohomology. It is a higher analog of the rational Chern character isomorphism for general toric schemes. In the special case of a projective simplicial toric scheme over a regular ring one obtains a rational isomorphism between the homotopy K-theory and the direct sum of m copies of the K-theory of the ground ring, m being the number of maximal cones in the underlying fan. Apart from its independent interest, in retrospect, Totaro…
A conjecture of J. Huh and B. Sturmfels predicts that the sign of the Euler characteristic of a complex very affine variety depends only on the parity of the dimension. The conjecture is true for locally complete intersections. Beyond this case, we construct counterexamples with arbitrarily bad failure.
For a profinite group, we construct a model structure on profinite spaces and profinite spectra with a continuous action. This yields descent spectral sequences for the homotopy groups of homotopy fixed point space and for stable homotopy groups of homotopy orbit spaces. Our main example is the Galois action on profinite étale topological types of varieties over a field. One motivation is to understand Grothendieck's section conjecture in terms of homotopy fixed points.
A separable, proper morphism of varieties with geometrically connected fibers induces a homotopy exact sequence relating the étale fundamental groups of source, target and fiber. Extending work of dos Santos, we prove the existence of an analogous homotopy exact sequence for fundamental group schemes classifying regular singular stratified bundles, under the additional assumption that the morphism in question can be (partially) compactified to a log smooth morphism.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
Let U be a unipotent group over the field of complex numbers C, acting on a complex algebraic variety X. Assume that there exists a surjective morphism of complex algebraic varieties f: X --> Y whose fibres are orbits of U. We show that if X and Y are smooth and all orbits of U in X have the same dimension, then the induced map on C-points X(C) --> Y(C) is a homotopy equivalence. Moreover, if U, X, Y, and f are defined over the field of real numbers R, then the induced map on R-points X(R) --> Y(R) is surjective and induces homotopy equivalences on connected components.
In this paper we explore the isotropic stable motivic homotopy category constructed from the usual stable motivic homotopy category, following the work of Vishik on isotropic motives (see [29]), by killing anisotropic varieties. In particular, we focus on cohomology operations in the isotropic realm and study the structure of the isotropic Steenrod algebra. Then, we construct an isotropic version of the motivic Adams spectral sequence and apply it to find a complete description of the isotropic stable homotopy groups of the sphere spectrum, which happen to be isomorphic to the $Ext$-groups of …
We generalize the Harnack-Thom theorem to relate the ranks of the Lawson homology groups with $\Z_2$-coefficients of a real quasiprojective variety with the ranks of its reduced real Lawson homology groups. In the case of zero-cycle group, we recover the classical Harnack-Thom theorem and generalize the classical version to include real quasiprojective varieties. We use Weil's construction of Picard varieties to construct reduced real Picard groups, and Milnor's construction of universal bundles to construct some weak models of classifying spaces of some cycle groups. These weak models are use…
Let X be a smooth algebraic variety on which a solvable Lie group acts freely on a dense open orbit. Such varieties include generalized flag varieties, toric varieties, Bott-Samelson varieties, and many spherical varieties, as well as equivariant blow-ups of these. We prove that the space of based holomorphic maps from the Riemann sphere to X approximates in an appropriate sense, both in homology and in homotopy the space of all continuous based maps from the 2-sphere to X, that is the 2-fold loop space of X.
For each integer n\ge 2, we construct an irreducible, smooth, complex projective variety M of dimension n, whose fundamental group has infinitely generated homology in degree n+1 and whose universal cover is a Stein manifold, homotopy equivalent to an infinite bouquet of n-dimensional spheres. This non-finiteness phenomenon is also reflected in the fact that the homotopy group π_n(M), viewed as a module over Zπ_1(M), is free of infinite rank. As a result, we give a negative answer to a question of Koll'ar on the existence of quasi-projective classifying spaces (up to commensurability) for the …
We study the homotopy groups of complements to reducible divisors on non-singular projective varieties with ample components and isolated non normal crossings. We prove a vanishing theorem generalizing conditions for commutativity of the fundamental groups. The calculation of supports of non vanishing homotopy groups as modules over the fundamental group in terms of the geometry of the locus of non-normal crossings is discussed. We review previous work on the local study of isolated non-normal crossings and relate the motivic zeta function to the local polytopes of quasiadjunction. As an appli…
We give two constructions of functorial topological realizations for schemes of finite type over the field $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$ of formal Laurent series with complex coefficients, with values in the homotopy category of spaces over the circle. The problem of constructing such a realization was stated by D. Treumann, motivated by certain questions in mirror symmetry. The first construction uses spreading out and the usual Betti realization over $\mathbb{C}$. The second uses generalized semistable models and log Betti realization defined by Kato and Nakayama, and applies to smooth rigid analyti…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. Thus the mixed Hodge structures can be recovered from cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, these all become real variations of mix…
The notion of modulus is a striking feature of Rosenlicht-Serre's theory of generalized Jacobian varieties of curves. It was carried over to algebraic cycles on general varieties by Bloch-Esnault, Park, Rülling, Krishna-Levine. Recently, Kerz-Saito introduced a notion of Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus in connection with geometric class field theory with wild ramification for varieties over finite fields. We study the non-homotopy invariant part of the Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus and show their torsion and divisibility properties. Modulus is being brought to sheaf theory by Kah…
