Iron plays a crucial role in studies of late-type stars. In their atmospheres, Fe I is the minority species and its lines are subject to the departures from LTE. In contrast, one believes that LTE is a realistic approximation for Fe II lines. The main source of the uncertainties in the non-LTE (NLTE) calculations for cool atmospheres is a treatment of inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms. We investigate the effect of Fe I + H I and Fe II + H I collisions and their different treatment on the Fe I/Fe II ionisation equilibrium and Fe abundance determinations for Galactic halo benchmark stars HD84937, HD122563, and HD140283 and a sample of 38 very metal-poor giants in the dwarf galaxies with well known distances. We perform the NLTE calculations for Fe I-II with using quantum-mechanical (QM) rate coefficients for collisions with H I from Barklem (2018, B18), Yakovleva, Belyaev, and Kraemer (2018, YBK18), and Yakovleva, Belyaev, and Kraemer (2019). We find that collisions with H I serve as efficient thermalisation processes for Fe II and the NLTE abundance corrections for Fe II lines do not exceed 0.02 dex at [Fe/H] > -3 and reach +0.06~dex at [Fe/H] ~ -4. For given star, the B18 and YBK18 treatments of Fe I + H I collisions lead to similar average NLTE abundances from Fe I lines, although there exist discrepancies in the NLTE corrections for individual lines. With using QM collisional data and the Gaia based surface gravity, we obtain consistent abundances from Fe I and Fe II for a red giant HD122563. For HD84937 and HD140283, we study the Fe lines in the visible and the UV (1968-2990 A) range. For both Fe I and Fe II, abundances from the visible and UV lines are consistent. The abundances from Fe I and Fe II agree within 0.10 and 0.13 dex in the YBK18 and B18 cases. The Fe I/Fe II ionisation equilibrium is achieved for each [Fe/H] > -3.5 star of our dwarf galaxy sample.
The OI 777 nm lines are among the most commonly used diagnostics for the oxygen abundances in the atmospheres of FGK-type stars. However, they form in conditions that are far from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We explore the departures from LTE of atomic oxygen, and their impact on OI lines, across the Stagger-grid of three-dimensional hydrodynamic model atmospheres. For the OI 777 nm triplet we find significant departures from LTE. These departures are larger in stars with larger effective temperatures, smaller surface gravities, and larger oxygen abundances. We present grids of pred…
It is generally accepted that the atmospheres of cool/lukewarm stars of spectral types A and later are described well by LTE model atmospheres, while the O-type stars require a detailed treatment of NLTE effects. Here model atmosphere structures, spectral energy distributions and synthetic spectra computed with ATLAS9/SYNTHE and TLUSTY/SYNSPEC, and results from a hybrid method combining LTE atmospheres and NLTE line-formation with DETAIL/SURFACE are compared. Their ability to reproduce observations for effective temperatures between 15000 and 35000 K are verified. Strengths and weaknesses of t…
Rate coefficients for inelastic Na+H collisions are calculated for all transitions between the ten levels up to and including the ionic state (ion-pair production), namely Na(3s,3p,4s,3d,4p,5s,4d,4f,5p)+H(1s) and Na+ + H-. The calculations are based on recent full quantum scattering cross-section calculations. The data are needed for non-LTE applications in cool astrophysical environments, especially cool stellar atmospheres, and are presented for a temperature range of 500-8000 K. From consideration of the sensitivity of the cross-sections to input quantum chemical data and the results of dif…
Rate coefficients for inelastic Mg+H collisions are calculated for all transitions between the lowest seven levels and the ionic state (charge transfer). The rate coefficients are based on cross-sections from full quantum scattering calculations, which are themselves based on detailed quantum chemical calculations for the MgH molecule. The data are needed for non-LTE applications in cool astrophysical environments, especially cool stellar atmospheres, and are presented for a temperature range of 500-8000 K. From consideration of the sensitivity of the cross-sections to various uncertainties in…
We present grids of limb-darkening coefficients computed from non-LTE, line-blanketed TLUSTY model atmospheres, covering effective-temperature and surface-gravity ranges of 15--55kK and 4.75 dex (cgs) down to the effective Eddington limit, at 1x, 1x, 0.5x (LMC), 0.2x (SMC), and 0.1x solar. Results are given for the Bessell UBVRIJKHL, Sloan ugriz, Stromgren ubvy, WFCAM ZYJHK, Hipparcos, Kepler, and Tycho passbands, in each case characterized by several different limb-darkening `laws'. We examine the sensitivity of limb darkening to temperature, gravity, metallicity, microturbulent velocity, and…
Oxygen abundance measurements are important for understanding stellar structure and evolution. Measured in Cepheids, they further provide clues on the metallicity gradient and chemo-dynamical evolution in the Galaxy. However, most of the abundance analyses of Cepheids to date have been based on one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres. Here, we test the validity of this approach for the key oxygen abundance diagnostic, the \ion{O}{I} $777\,\mathrm{nm}$~triplet lines. We carry out 2D non-LTE radiative transfer clculations across two different 2D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of …
As one of the most important elements in astronomy, iron abundance determinations need to be as accurate as possible. We investigate the accuracy of spectroscopic iron abundance analyses using archetypal metal-poor stars. We perform detailed 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations based on 3D hydrodynamic Stagger model atmospheres, and employ a new model atom that includes new quantum-mechanical neutral hydrogen collisional rate coefficients. With the exception of the red giant HD122563, we find that the 3D non-LTE models achieve Fe i/Fe ii excitation and ionization balance as well as not h…
We present the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations for O I with the updated model atom that includes quantum-mechanical rate coefficients for O I + H I inelastic collisions from the recent study of Barklem (2018). The non-LTE abundances from the O I lines were determined for the Sun and 46 FG stars in a wide metallicity range, -2.6 < [Fe/H] < 0.2. An application of accurate atomic data leads to larger departures from LTE and lower oxygen abundances compared to that for the Drawin's theoretical approximation. For the infrared O I 7771-5 A triplet lines, the change in the …
The influence of the uncertainties in the rate coefficient data for electron-impact excitation and ionization on non-LTE Li line formation in cool stellar atmospheres is investigated. We examine the electron collision data used in previous non-LTE calculations and compare them to recent calculations that use convergent close-coupling (CCC) techniques and to our own calculations using the R-matrix with pseudostates (RMPS) method. We find excellent agreement between rate coefficients from the CCC and RMPS calculations, and reasonable agreement between these data and the semi-empirical data used …
The non-local thermodynaic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for the two ions of zirconium is considered through a range of spectral types when the Zr abundance varies from the solar value down to [Zr/H] = -3. The model atom was built using 148 energy levels of Zr I, 772 levels of Zr II, and the ground state of Zr III. It was shown that the main non-LTE mechnism for the minority species Zr I is ultraviolet overionization. Non-LTE leads to systematically depleted total absorption in the Zr I lines and positive abundance corrections, reaching to 0.33 dex for the solar metallicity models. The …
A new grid of detailed atmosphere model spectra for hot and moderately cool subdwarf stars is presented. High-resolution spectra and synthetic photometry are calculated in the range from 1000Å to 10,000Å using Non-LTE fully line-blanketed atmosphere structures. Our grid covers eight temperatures within 10,000<Teff [K]<65,000, three surface gravities in the range 4.5<logg [cgs]<6.5, two helium abundances matching two extreme helium-rich and helium-poor scenarios, and two limiting metallicity boundaries regarding both solar ([Fe/H] = 0) and Galactic halo ([Fe/H] = -1.5 and [α/Fe] = +0.4). Beside…
We present a preliminary local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) abundance analysis of the template halo red giant HD122563 based on a realistic, three-dimensional (3D), time-dependent, hydrodynamical model atmosphere of the very metal-poor star. We compare the results of the 3D analysis with the abundances derived by means of a standard LTE analysis based on a classical, 1D, hydrostatic model atmosphere of the star. Due to the different upper photospheric temperature stratifications predicted by 1D and 3D models, we find large, negative, 3D-1D LTE abundance differences for low-excitation OH and…
Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for neutral and singly-ionized iron is considered through a range of spectral types when the effective temperature varies from 6500 K up to 8500 K, the gravity from log g = 4 down to log g = 3, and the metallicity is solar one. The non-LTE calculations were performed with a comprehensive model atom for iron which was treated in our earlier paper (Mashonkina et al. 2011, A&A, 528, A87). The departures from LTE lead to systematically depleted total absorption in the Fe I lines and positive abundance corrections, in qualitative agreem…
In this work we present first results of our current project aimed at combining the 3D hydrodynamical stellar atmosphere approach with non-LTE (NLTE) spectral line synthesis for a number of key chemical species. We carried out a full 3D-NLTE spectrum synthesis of the oxygen IR 777 nm triplet, using a modified and improved version of our NLTE3D package to calculate departure coefficients for the atomic levels of oxygen in a CO5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical solar model atmosphere. Spectral line synthesis was subsequently performed with the Linfor 3D code. In agreement with previous studies, we find tha…
Although oxygen is an important tracer of the early Galactic evolution, its abundance trends with metallicity are still relatively poorly known at [Fe/H] < -2.5. This is in part due to a lack of reliable oxygen abundance indicators in the metal-poor stars, in part due to shortcomings in 1D LTE abundance analyses. In this study we determined the oxygen abundance in the metal-poor halo giant HD 122563 using a 3D hydrodynamical CO5BOLD model atmosphere. Our main goal was to understand whether a 3D LTE analysis may help to improve the reliability of oxygen abundances determined from OH UV lines in…
The non-LTE line formation for Al I and Si I was calculated with model atmospheres corresponding to F-G-K type stars of different metallicity. To account for inelastic collisions with H I, for the first time we applied the cross sections calculated by Belyaev et al. using model approaches within the formalism of the Born-Oppenheimer quantum theory. For Al I non-LTE leads to overionization in the line formation layers and to weakened spectral lines, in line with earlier non-LTE studies. However, in contrast to the previuos studies, our results predict smaller magnitude of the non-LTE effects fo…
Line contribution functions are useful diagnostics for studying spectral line formation in stellar atmospheres. I derive an expression for the contribution function to the abso- lute flux depression that emerges from three-dimensional box-in-a-star model stellar atmospheres. I illustrate the result by comparing the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) spectral line formation of the high-excitation permitted OI777nm lines with the non-LTE case.
The study of massive stars in different metallicity environments is a central topic of current stellar research. The spectral analysis of massive stars requires adequate model atmospheres. The computation of such models is difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, spectral analyses are greatly facilitated if they can refer to existing grids of models. Here we provide grids of model atmospheres for OB-type stars at metallicities corresponding to the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, as well as to solar metallicity. In total, the grids comprise 785 individual models. The models were calculated u…
Context. The pursuit of more realistic spectroscopic modelling and consistent abundances has led us to begin a new series of papers designed to improve current solar and stellar abundances of various atomic species. To achieve this, we have began updating the three-dimensional (3D) non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer code, Multi3D, and the equivalent one-dimensional (1D) non-LTE radiative transfer code, MULTI. Aims. We examine our improvements to these codes by redetermining the solar barium abundance. Barium was chosen for this test as it is an important diagnosti…
The Fe I 6173 Å line is widely used in the measurements of vector magnetic fields by instruments including the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). We perform non-local thermodynamic equilibrium calculations of this line based on radiative hydrodynamic simulations in a flaring atmosphere. We employ both a quiet-Sun atmosphere and a penumbral atmosphere as the initial one in our simulations. We find that, in the quiet-Sun atmosphere, the line center is obviously enhanced during an intermediate flare. The enhanced emission is contributed from both radiative backwarming in the photosphere and …
The current analysis is dedicated to a detailed investigation of the non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) effects influencing the formation of the Fe I 6173 A line, which is widely used by many instruments including the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on board the Solar Orbiter. We synthesize the Stokes profiles in a snapshot of a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the solar photosphere under both LTE and NLTE conditions. The simulation cube contains a sunspot and a plage re…
A non-LTE (NLTE) abundance analysis was carried out for three extreme helium stars (EHes): BD+10 2179, BD-9 4395, and LS IV+6 002, from their optical spectra with NLTE model atmospheres. NLTE TLUSTY model atmospheres were computed with H, He, C, N, O, and Ne treated in NLTE. Model atmosphere parameters were chosen from consideration of fits to observed He I line profiles and ionization equilibria of C and N ions. The program SYNSPEC was then used to determine the NLTE abundances for Ne as well as H, He, C, N, and O. LTE neon abundances from Ne I lines in the EHes: LSE 78, V1920 Cyg, HD 124448,…
Magnetic flux emergence into the outer layers of the Sun is a fundamental mechanism for releasing energy into the chromosphere and the corona. In this paper, we study the emergence of granular-sized flux concentrations and the structuring of the corresponding physical parameters and atmospheric diagnostics in the upper photo- sphere and in the chromosphere. We make use of a realistic 3D MHD simulation of the outer layers of the Sun to study the formation of the Ca II 8542 line. We also derive semi-empirical 3D models from non-LTE inversions of our observations. These models contain depth-depen…
We performed the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations for Ti I-II with the updated model atom that includes quantum-mechanical rate coefficients for inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms. We have calculated for the first time the rate coefficients for bound-bound transitions in inelastic collisions of titanium atoms and ions with hydrogen atoms and for the charge-exchange processes: Ti I + H <-> Ti II + H- and Ti II + H <-> Ti III + H-. The influence of these data on non-LTE abundance determinations has been tested for the Sun and four metal-poor stars. For Ti I and Ti…
The infrared Mg I lines near 12 microns are a pair of emission lines which are magnetically sensitive and have been used to measure solar magnetic fields. Here we calculate the response of the Mg I 12.32 $μ$m line during a flare and find that in our modeling this line has a complicated behavior. At the beginning of the flare heating, this line shows an intensity dimming at the line center. The intensity then increases when heating continues, with increasing contributions from the heated layers in the chromosphere. The line formation height and the line width also increase as a result. As for t…
We perform the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) calculations for Ca I-II with the updated model atom that includes new quantum-mechanical rate coefficients for Ca I + H I collisions from two recent studies, that is, by Barklem and by Mitrushchenkov, Guitou, Belyaev, Yakovleva, Spielfiedel, and Feautrier, and investigate the accuracy of calcium abundance determinations using the Sun, Procyon, and five metal-poor (MP) stars with well-determined stellar parameters. We show that both collisional recipes lead to very similar NLTE results. When using the subordinate lines of Ca I and the h…
Extreme helium stars (EHe stars) are hydrogen-deficient supergiants of spectral type A and B. They are believed to result from mergers in double degenerate systems. In this paper we present a detailed quantitative non-LTE spectral analysis for BD+10$^\circ$2179, a prototype of this rare class of stars, using UVES and FEROS spectra covering the range from $\sim$3100 to 10 000 Å. Atmosphere model computations were improved in two ways. First, since the UV metal line blanketing has a strong impact on the temperature-density stratification, we used the Atlas12 code. Additionally, We tested Atlas12…
The OI 777 nm triplet is a key diagnostic of oxygen abundances in the atmospheres of FGK-type stars; however it is sensitive to departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The accuracy of non-LTE line formation calculations has hitherto been limited by errors in the inelastic O+H collisional rate coefficients: several recent studies have used the so-called Drawin recipe, albeit with a correction factor $\mathrm{S_{H}}$ that is calibrated to the solar centre-to-limb variation of the triplet. We present a new model oxygen atom that incorporates inelastic O+H collisional rate coefficie…
Neutral sodium is a minority species in the atmospheres of late-type stars, and line formation in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) is often a poor assumption, in particular for strong lines. We present an extensive grid of non-LTE calculations for several NaI lines in cool stellar atmospheres, including metal-rich and metal-poor dwarfs and giants. For the first time, we constructed a Na model atom that incorporates accurate quantum mechanical calculations for collisional excitation and ionisation by electrons as well as collisional excitation and charge exchange reactions with neutral hyd…
In the last decades, stellar atmosphere models have become a key tool in understanding massive stars. Applied for spectroscopic analysis, these models provide quantitative information on stellar wind properties as well as fundamental stellar parameters. The intricate non-LTE conditions in stellar winds dictate the development of adequate sophisticated model atmosphere codes. The increase in both, the computational power and our understanding of physical processes in stellar atmospheres, led to an increasing complexity in the models. As a result, codes emerged that can tackle a wide range of st…
The ionization state of the gas in the dynamic solar chromosphere can depart strongly from the instantaneous statistical equilibrium commonly assumed in numerical modeling. We improve on earlier simulations of the solar atmosphere that only included non-equilbrium hydrogen ionization by performing a 2D radiation-magneto-hydrodynamics simulation featuring non-equilibrium ionization of both hydrogen and helium. The simulation includes the effect of hydrogen Lyman-$α$ and the EUV radiation from the corona on the ionization and heating of the atmosphere. Details on code implementation are given. W…
Resonance spectral lines such as H I Ly α, Mg II h&k, and Ca II H&K that form in the solar chromosphere are influenced by the effects of 3D radiative transfer as well as partial redistribution (PRD). So far no one has modeled these lines including both effects simultaneously owing to the high computing demands of existing algorithms. Such modeling is however indispensable for accurate diagnostics of the chromosphere. We present a computationally tractable method to treat PRD scattering in 3D model atmospheres using a 3D non-LTE radiative transfer code. To make the method memory-friendly, we us…
Mg is the alpha element of choice for Galactic population and chemical evolution studies as it is easily detectable in all late-type stars. Such studies require precise elemental abundances, and thus departures from LTE need to be accounted for. Our goal is to provide reliable departure coefficients and equivalent widths in non-LTE, and for reference in LTE, for diagnostic lines of Mg studied in late-type stars. These can be used e.g., to correct LTE spectra and abundances. Using the model atom built and tested in the preceding paper in this series, we performed non-LTE radiative transfer calc…
Convective motions in solar-type stellar atmospheres induce Doppler shifts that affect the strengths and shapes of spectral absorption lines and create slightly asymmetric line profiles. 1D LTE studies of elemental abundances are not able to reproduce this phenomenon, which becomes particularly important when modeling the impact of isotopic fine structure, like the subtle depression created by the 6Li isotope on the red wing of the Li I resonance doublet line. The purpose of this work is to provide corrections for the lithium abundance, A(Li), and the 6Li/7Li ratio that can easily be applied t…
We performed non-LTE calculations for O I with the plane-parallel model atmospheres for a set of stellar parameters corresponding to A-K type stars. The model atom of Przybilla et al. (2000) was updated using the best theoretical and experimental atomic data available so far. Non-LTE leads to strengthening the O I lines, and the difference between the non-LTE and LTE abundances (non-LTE correction) is negative. The departures from LTE grow toward higher effective temperature and lower surface gravity. In the entire temperature range and log g = 4, the non-LTE correction does not exceed 0.05 de…
Ultraviolet over-ionisation of iron atoms in the solar atmosphere leads to deviations in their level populations from the Saha-Boltzmann statistics. This causes their line profiles to form in Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) conditions. While inverting such profiles to determine atmospheric parameters, the NLTE effects are often neglected and deviations from LTE are compensated for by tweaking other quantities. We investigate how the routinely employed LTE inversion of iron lines formed in NLTE under- or over-estimates atmospheric quantities such as temperature (T), line-of-sight vel…
Context. Departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) distort the calcium abundance derived from stellar spectra in various ways, depending on the lines used and the stellar atmospheric parameters. The collection of atomic data adopted in non-LTE (NLTE) calculations must be sufficiently complete and accurate. Aims. We derive NLTE abundances from high-quality observations and reliable stellar parameters using a model atom built afresh for this work, and check the consistency of our results over a wide wavelength range with transitions of atomic and singly ionised calcium. Methods. We b…
In this talk we review the basic assumptions and physics covered by classical 1D LTE model atmospheres. We will focus on ATLAS and MARCS models of F-G-K stars and describe what resources are available through the web, both in terms of codes and model-atmosphere grids. We describe the advances made in hydrodynamical simulations of convective stellar atmospheres with the CO5BOLD code and what grids and resources are available, with a prospect of what will be available in the near future.
Mg is often traced in late-type stars using lines of neutral magnesium, which is expected to be subject to departures from LTE. The astrophysical importance of Mg as well as its relative simplicity from an atomic physics point of view, makes it a prime target and test bed for detailed ab initio non-LTE modelling in stellar atmospheres. For the low-lying states of Mg i, electron collision data were calculated using the R-matrix method. Calculations for collisional broadening by neutral hydrogen were also performed where data were missing. These calculations, together with data from the literatu…
We present a new model atom of Zn I-II based on the most up-to-date photoionisation cross-sections, electron-impact excitation rates, and rate coefficients for the Zn I + H I and Zn II + H- collisions. The latter were calculated using the multi-channel quantum asymptotic treatment based on the Born-Oppenheimer approach. Non-LTE analysis was performed for the first time for lines of Zn I and Zn II in the ultraviolet (UV) spectra of two very metal-poor reference stars, HD 84937 and HD 140283. We found consistent non-LTE abundance from the resonance Zn I 2138 A line, the subordinate lines, and th…
Carbon abundances in late-type stars are important in a variety of astrophysical contexts. However C i lines, one of the main abundance diagnostics, are sensitive to departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We present a model atom for non-LTE analyses of C i lines, that uses a new, physically-motivated recipe for the rates of neutral hydrogen impact excitation. We analyse C i lines in the solar spectrum, employing a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model solar atmosphere and 3D non-LTE radiative transfer. We find negative non-LTE abundance corrections for C i lines in the sola…
This paper forms the second part of our study on how the neglect of NLTE conditions in the formation of Fe I 6301.5 A and the 6302.5 A lines influences the atmosphere obtained by inverting their profiles in LTE. The main cause of NLTE effects is the line opacity deficit due to the excess ionization of the Fe I atoms by the UV photons in the Sun. In the first paper, the above photospheric lines were assumed to have formed in 1DNLTE and the effects of horizontal radiation transfer (RT) were neglected. In the present paper, the iron lines are computed in 3DNLTE. We investigate the influence of ho…
Hydrogen Balmer lines are commonly used as spectroscopic effective temperature diagnostics of late-type stars. However, the absolute accuracy of classical methods that are based on one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres and local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) is still unclear. To investigate this, we carry out 3D non-LTE calculations for the Balmer lines, performed, for the first time, over an extensive grid of 3D hydrodynamic STAGGER model atmospheres. For H$α$, H$β$, and H$γ$, we find significant 1D non-LTE versus 3D non-LTE differences (3D effects): the outer wings tend to be …
The Mg II h&k lines are powerful diagnostics for studying the solar chromosphere. They have become particularly popular with the launch of the IRIS satellite, and a number of studies that include these lines have lead to great progress in understanding chromospheric heating, in many cases thanks to the support from 3D MHD simulations. In this study we utilize another approach to analyze observations: non-LTE inversions of the Mg II h&k and UV triplet lines including the effects of partial redistribution. Our inversion code attempts to construct a model atmosphere that is compatible with the ob…
We present observations of a solar plage in the millimeter-continuum with the ALMA and in the Ca 8542 and Na 5896 spectral lines with the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS). Our goal is to compare the measurement of local gas temperatures provided by ALMA with the temperature diagnostics provided by non-LTE inversions using STIC. In performing these inversions, we find that using column mass as the reference height scale, rather than optical depth, provides more reliable atmospheric profiles above the temperature minimum and that the treatment of non- LTE hydrogen ionization bri…
Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects in diagnostically important solar Fe I lines are important due to the strong sensitivity of Fe I to ionizing UV radiation, which may lead to a considerable under-population of the Fe I levels in the solar atmosphere and, therefore, to a sizeable weakening of Fe I lines. Such NLTE effects may be intensified or weakened by horizontal radiative transfer (RT) in a three-dimensionally (3-D) structured atmosphere. We analyze the influence of horizontal RT on commonly used Fe I lines in a snapshot of a 3-D radiation magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulat…
We present a pilot study on non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line-formation computations for the isotopes 3He and 4He in the mercury-manganese star kappa Cancri. The impact of NLTE effects on the determination of isotopic abundances and the vertical stratification of helium in the atmosphere is investigated. Modern NLTE line-formation computations were employed to analyse a high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio ESO-VLT/UVES spectrum of kap Cnc. The atmospheric parameters were determined from fitting the hydrogen Balmer lines and the spectral energy distribution. Multiple HeI…
Model atoms are an integral part in the solution of non-LTE problems. They comprise the atomic input data that are used to specify the statistical equilibrium equations and the opacities and emissivities of radiative transfer. A realistic implementation of the structure and the processes governing the quantum-mechanical system of an atom is decisive for the successful modelling of observed spectra. We provide guidelines and suggestions for the construction of robust and comprehensive model atoms as required in non-LTE line-formation computations for stellar atmospheres. Emphasis is given on th…
M dwarfs are key targets for high-resolution spectroscopic analyses due to a high incidence of these stars in the solar neighbourhood and their importance as exoplanetary hosts. Several methodological challenges make such analyses difficult, leading to significant discrepancies in the published results. We compare M dwarf parameters derived by recent high-resolution near-infrared studies with each other and with fundamental stellar parameters. We also assess to what extent deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) for Fe and K influence the outcome of these studies. We carry out li…
Using the method termed complex asteroseismology, we derive constraints on model atmospheres, in particular, on the NLTE effects. We fit simultaneously pulsational frequencies and the corresponding values of the nonadiabatic complex parameter f for the four βCephei stars: θOph, νEri, γPeg and 12 Lac. The LTE Kurucz models and the BSTAR2006 NLTE models are tested.
Based on 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres computed with the CO5BOLD code and 3D non-LTE (NLTE) line formation calculations, we study the effect of the convection-induced line asymmetry on the derived 6Li abundance for a range in effective temperature, gravity, and metallicity covering the stars of the Asplund et al. (2006) sample. When the asymmetry effect is taken into account for this sample of stars, the resulting 6Li/7Li ratios are reduced by about 1.5% on average with respect to the isotopic ratios determined by Asplund et al. (2006). This purely theoretical correction diminishes the n…
Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for Mg I and Mg II lines is considered in classical 1D-LTE model atmospheres of the Sun and 17 stars with reliable atmospheric parameters and in a broad range of spectral types: 3900 $\le$ \Teff\ $\le$ 17500~K, 1.1 $\le$ log$g$ $\le$ 4.7, and $-$2.6 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ +0.4. We find that, for each star, NLTE leads to smaller line-to-line scatter. For 10 stars, NLTE leads to consistent abundances from Mg I and Mg II, while the difference in the LTE abundance varies between $-0.21$ and +0.23~dex. We obtain an abundance discrepancy betwee…
Basic assumptions of the NLTE approximation in stellar atmospheres are summarized. The assumptions of thermodynamic equilibrium, local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and non-LTE (NLTE) are compared. It is emphasized that LTE is a poor approximation if radiative transitions dominate in stellar atmospheres. The equations of kinetic equilibrium and methods of their solution are discussed.
We study the implications of averaging methods with different reference depth scales for 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres computed with the Stagger-code. The temporally and spatially averaged (hereafter denoted as <3D>) models are explored in the light of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) spectral line formation by comparing spectrum calculations using full 3D atmosphere structures with those from <3D> averages. We explore methods for computing mean <3D> stratifications from the Stagger-grid time-dependent 3D radiative hydro- dynamical atmosphere models by considering four different ref…
We investigate the role of hydrogen collisions in NLTE spectral line synthesis, and introduce a new general empirical recipe to determine inelastic charge transfer (CT) and bound-bound hydrogen collisional rates. This recipe is based on fitting the energy functional dependence of published quantum collisional rate coefficients of several neutral elements (BeI, NaI, MgI, AlI, SiI and CaI) using simple polynomial equations. We perform thorough NLTE abundance calculation tests using our method for four different atoms, Na, Mg, Al and Si, for a broad range of stellar parameters. We then compare th…
We construct a comprehensive model atom for TiI-II using more than 3600 measured and predicted energy levels of TiI and 1800 energy levels of TiII, and quantum mechanical photoionisation cross-sections. Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for the two ions of titanium is treated through a wide range of spectral types from A to K, including metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] down to -2.6 dex. NLTE leads to systematically depleted total absorption in the TiI lines and to positive abundance corrections. The magnitude of NLTE abundance corrections is smaller compared to the availa…
Context. Computing spectra from 3D simulations of stellar atmospheres when allowing for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) is computationally very intensive. Aims. We develop a machine learning based method to speed up 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations in optically thick stellar atmospheres. Methods. Making use of a variety of 3D simulations of the solar atmosphere, we trained a convolutional neural network, SunnyNet, to learn the translation from LTE to non-LTE atomic populations. Non-LTE populations computed with an existing 3D code were considered as the true…
Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for Ca I-Ca II, Ti I-Ti II, and Fe I-Fe II is considered in model atmospheres of giant stars with an effective temperature of 4000 K $\le$ Teff $\le$ 5000 K and a metal abundance of -4 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ 0. The departures from LTE are analyzed depending on atmospheric parameters. We present the non-LTE abundance corrections for 28 lines of Ca I, 42 lines of Ti I, 54 lines of Ti II, and 262 lines of Fe I and a three-dimensional interpolation code to obtain the non-LTE correction online (http://spectrum.inasan.ru/nLTE/) for an individu…
