The structure of 1,3,5_triphenylbenzene C6H3(C6H5)3 at 473 K was investigated using the X-ray diffraction method. The measurements of scattered radiation intensity were performed in a wide range of wave vector. For the first time the theoretically predicted model of the structure 1,3,5_triphenylbenzene was experimentally confirmed. The model of short range arrangement of the molecules was proposed. The determined mean, smallest mutual distances between molecules of liquid studied are: r1=4.30 A, r2=5.30 A, r3=5.40 A. The most probable value of the packing coefficient of the molecules was found to be k=0.53. This value falls in the range of k values permissible for liquid phase. The liquid studied is a major aromatic compound. The study of structure of 1,3,5_triphenylbenzene may be helpful in the explanation of the mechanism of intermolecular interactions in synthetic polymers.
Simulation (molecular dynamics and Car-Parrinello [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 2471 (1985)]) and diffraction (x-ray and neutron) studies on nitromethane are compared aiming at the determination of the liquid structure. Beyond that, the capabilities of the methods to describe liquid structure are discussed. For the studied liquid, the diffraction methods are performing very well in the determination of intramolecular structure, but they do not give detailed structural information on the intermolecular structure. The good agreement between the diffraction experiments and the results of molecular dynami…
Intermolecular correlations in liquid acetonitrile (CH3CN) have been revisited by calculating orientational correlation functions. In the present approach, hydrogen atoms are included, so that a concept applicable for molecules of (nearly) tetrahedral shape can be exploited. In this way molecular arrangements are elucidated not only for closest neighbours but also extending well beyond the first coordination sphere. Thus a complementary viewpoint is provided to the more popular dipole-dipole correlations. Our calculations are based on large structural models that were obtained by applying diff…
The total scattering structure factors of pure liquid n-pentanol, pentanal, and 5 of their mixtures, as determined by high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments, are presented. For the interpretation of measured data, molecular dynamics computer simulations are performed, utilizing 'all-atom' type force fields. The diffraction signals in general resemble each other over most of the monitored Q range above 1 $Å^{-1}$, but the absolute values of the intensities of the small-angle scattering maximum ('pre-peak', 'first sharp diffraction peak'), around 0.6 $Å^{-1}$, change in an unexpec…
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments and molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on simple aliphatic aldehydes, from propanal to nonanal. The performance of the OPLS all-atom interaction potential model for aldehydes has been assessed via direct comparison of simulated and experimental total scattering structure factors. In general, MD results reproduce the experimental data at least semi-quantitatively. However, a slight mismatch can be observed between the two datasets in terms of the position of the main diffraction maxima. Partial radial distribution functions have also bee…
Corrections for nuclear quantum effects (NQE) have been calculated for classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation models of light (H2O), heavy (D2O) and null (H1.28D0.72O) water. New path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations have also been conducted for the same systems. NQEs have somewhat smaller influence on the O-D and D-D partial radial distribution functions of heavy water than on the O-H and H-H ones of light water. After correcting for NQEs the O-H bondlengths in light and heavy water have become different: the O-D ones are about 0.5 % shorter than the O-H ones. Following NQ…
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements have been conducted on aqueous mixtures of propan-2-ol (a.k.a. isopropanol, or 2-propanol), for alcohol contents between 10 and 90 molar %, from room temperature down to 230 K. Molecular dynamics simulations, by using an all-atom parametrization of the propan-2-ol molecule and the well-known TIP4P/2005 water model, were able to provide semi-quantitative descriptions of the measured total structure factors. Various quantities related to hydrogen bonding, like hydrogen bond numbers, size distribution of cyclic entities and cluster size distributions, ha…
Structure of liquid--vapor interfaces: perspectives from liquid state theory, large-scale simulations, and potential grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction
Following a demonstration of how neutron diffraction with polarization analysis may be applied for the accurate determination of the coherent static structure factor of disordered materials containing substantial amounts of proton nuclei (Temleitner et al., Phys. Rev. B 92, 014201, 2015), we now focus on the incoherent scattering. Incoherent contributions are responsible for the great difficulties while processing standard (non-polarized) neutron diffraction data from hydrogenous materials, hence the importance of the issue. Here we report incoherent scattering intensities for liquid acetone, …
Polyvalent metal melts (gallium, tin, bismuth, etc.) have microscopic structural features, which are detected by neutron and X-ray diffraction and which are absent in simple liquids. Based on neutron and X-ray diffraction data and results of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations for liquid gallium, we examine the structure of this liquid metal at atomistic level. Time-resolved cluster analysis allows one to reveal that the short-range structural order in liquid gallium is determined by a range of the correlation lengths. This analysis performed over set of independent samples corre…
Liquids generally become more ordered upon cooling. However, it has been a long-standing debate on whether such structural ordering in liquid water takes place continuously or discontinuosly: continuum vs. mixture models. Here, by computer simulations of three popular water models and analysis of recent scattering experiment data, we show that, in the structure factor of water, there are two overlapped peaks hidden in the apparent "first diffraction peak", one of which corresponds to the neighboring O-O distance as in ordinary liquids and the other to the longest periodicity of density waves i…
Reverse Monte Carlo modeling of liquid water, based on one neutron and one X-ray diffraction data set, applying also the most popular interatomic potential for water, SPC/E, has been performed. The strictly rigid geometry of SPC/E water molecules had to be loosened somewhat, in order to be able to produce a good fit to both sets of experimental data. In the final particle configurations, regularly shaped water molecules and straight hydrogen bonding angles were found to be consistent with diffraction results. It has been demonstrated that explicit use of interatomic potentials in RMC has a rol…

Liquid crystals formed by acute-angle bent-core (ABC) molecules with a 1,7 naphthalene central core show an intriguing phase behavior with the nematic phase accompanied by poorly understood additional phases. In this work, we characterize the physical properties of an ABC material, such as birefringence, dielectric permittivities, elastic constants, and surface alignment, and present X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies of their ordering. The ABC molecular shape resembling the letter $λ$ yields a very small splay elastic constant in the uniaxial nematic phase and resu…
Methanol-water liquid mixtures have been investigated by high-energy synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction at low temperatures. We are thus able to report the first complete sets of both X-ray and neutron weighted total scattering structure factors over the entire composition range (at 12 different methanol concentrations (x$_M$) from 10 to 100 mol%) and at temperatures from ambient down to the freezing points of the mixtures. The new diffraction data may later be used as reference in future theoretical and simulation studies. The measured data are interpreted by molecular dynamics simulat…
Electron scattering on liquid samples has been enabled recently by the development of ultrathin liquid sheet technologies. The data treatment of liquid-phase electron scattering has been mostly reliant on methodologies developed for gas electron diffraction, in which theoretical inputs and empirical fittings are often needed to account for the atomic form factor and remove the inelastic scattering background. The accuracy and impact of these theoretical and empirical inputs has not been benchmarked for liquid-phase electron scattering data. In this work, we present an alternative data treatmen…
Free-electron laser hard X-ray light sources can provide high fluence, femtosecond pulses, enabling the time-resolved probing of structural dynamics and elementary relaxation processes in molecules. Traditional X-ray elastic scattering from crystals in the ground state consists of sharp Bragg diffraction peaks that arise from pairs of molecules and reveal the ground state charge density. Scattering of ultrashort X-ray pulses from gases, liquids, and even single molecules is more complex and involves both single- and two- molecule contributions, diffuse (non-Bragg) features, elastic and inelast…
Control of the crystallization process at the microscopic level makes it possible to generate the nanocrystalline samples with the desired structural and morphological properties, that is of great importance for modern industry. In the present work, we study the influence of supercooling on the structure and morphology of the crystalline nuclei arising and growing within a liquid metallic film. The cluster analysis allows us to compute the diffraction patterns and to evaluate the morphological characteristics (the linear sizes of the homogeneous part and the thickness of the surface layer) of …
