We explore the possibility to include small-$x$ dynamics effects in the parton branching (PB) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. To this end, we first revisit the PB method at leading order, presenting a new fit to inclusive-DIS precision data, and performing a numerical study of the dynamic soft-gluon resolution scale. Next we investigate the effects of modified CCFM kernels, including both Sudakov and non-Sudakov form factors.
The Parton Branching (PB) Method describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent parton densities (TMDs). The obtained TMDs can be used in Monte Carlo generators to describe physical observables. We give an overview of recent developments, in particular the new application of PB TMDs in Drell-Yan + jets production, the four-flavor and five-flavor schemes for heavy quark contributions, and the inclusion of QED corrections in the PB evolution.
Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) provide three-dimensional images of the partonic structure of the nucleon in momentum space. We made impressive progress in understanding TMDs, both from the theoretical and experimental point of view. This brief overview on TMDs is divided in two parts: in the first, an essential list of achievements is presented. In the second, a selection of open questions is discussed.
Model studies play an important role for the understanding and elucidation of the nonperturbative properties of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The parton model is often a helpful framework and starting point for first explorations of TMD properties and the description of deep-inelastic processes in which TMDs can be accessed. Based on a systematic exploration of the parton model concept, we reconcile the claims in literature that there are 2 independent structures in the quark correlator in the parton model vs the claim that there are 3, and explain the und…
Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, also abbreviated as TMDs, offer a three-dimensional picture of hadrons by taking the intrinsic transverse momentum of the parton into consideration. Hence, they are very important for us to understand the structure of hadrons. In this article, we calculate and summarize all TMDs of quark through the spectator model, from twist-2 to twist-4. Especially, we give complete results of TMDs at twist-4. We adopt a general analytical framework to calculate TMDs, with both scalar and axial-vector spectators being considered. All TMDs are calc…
Generalised parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) describe complementary aspects of the three-dimensional structure of hadrons. We discuss their relation to each other and recall important theory results concerning their properties and their connection with physical observables.
Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when target and/or quark are transversely polarized. In combination with the final state interactions, this transverse deformation provides a natural mechanism for naive-T odd transverse single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS. The deformation of PDFs in impact parameter space can also be related to the transverse force acting on the active quark in polarized DIS at higher twist.
We discuss prospects for Monte Carlo event generators incorporating the dynamics of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. We illustrate TMD evolution in the parton branching formalism, and present Monte Carlo applications of the method.
We explicitly demonstrate how to correctly define the hadronic parton distributions (PDFs, TMDs, and GPDs) in the soft-wall AdS/QCD approach, based on the use of a quadratic dilaton field, providing confinement and spontaneous breaking of conformal and chiral symmetries. The power behavior of parton distributions at large values of the light-cone variable is consistent with quark counting rules and Drell-Yan-West duality. All parton distributions are defined in terms of profile functions, which depend on the light-cone coordinate and are fixed from PDFs and electromagnetic form factors.
We derive relations between transverse momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) and the usual parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the 3D covariant parton model, which follow from Lorentz invariance and the assumption of a rotationally symmetric distribution of parton momenta in the nucleon rest frame. Using the known PDFs f_1(x) and g_1(x) as input we predict the x- and pT-dependence of all twist-2 T-even TMDs.
The relations between TMDs and PDFs are obtained from the symmetry requirement: relativistic covariance combined with rotationally symmetric parton motion in the nucleon rest frame. This requirement is applied in the covariant parton model. Using the usual PDFs as an input, we are obtaining predictions for some polarized and unpolarized TMDs.
The covariant parton model is generalized to describe quark correlators in a systematic way. Previous results are reproduced for the T-even leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), and for the first time all T-even twist-3 TMDs are evaluated in this model. We apply the approach to evaluate the fully unintegrated quark correlator which allows us to understand the model-specific relations between different TMDs. We verify the consistency of the approach, present numerical results and compare to available TMD parametrizations.
Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions are a very powerful concept for the description of low and high transverse momentum effects in high energy collisions. The Parton Branching (PB) method provides TMD distributions which can be used in parton shower simulations, as already implemented in \cascade\ Monte Carlo event generator. This report gives a description of the work done during the DESY summer student program 2021, young scientists from very different time zones connecting from remote twice a day for 8 weeks, to develop a method, PS2TMD, that allows to determine effecti…
We derive relations between polarized transverse momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) and the usual parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the 3D covariant parton model, which follow from Lorentz invariance and the assumption of a rotationally symmetric distribution of parton momenta in the nucleon rest frame. Using the known PDF $g_{1}^{q}(x)$ as input we predict the $x$- and $\mathbf{p}_{T}$-dependence of all polarized twist-2 naively time-reversal even (T-even) TMDs.
We present the results of T-even TMDs in a light front quark-diquark model of nucleons with the wave functions constructed from the soft-wall AdS/QCD prediction. The relations amongst TMDs are discussed. The $p_\perp$ dependence of the TMDs are compared with the $t$-dependence of the GPDs. AdS/QCD wave function provides an explanation behind the approximate $x$ and $p_\perp$ factorization observed in lattice TMD calculations.
We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions in the newly proposed quasi-parton distribution function framework in Euclidean space. A soft factor subtraction is found to be essential to make the TMDs calculable on lattice. We show that the quasi-TMDs with the associated soft factor subtraction can be applied in hard QCD scattering processes such as Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic collisions. This allows future lattice calculations to provide information on the non-perturbative inputs and energy evolutions for the TMDs. Extension to the generalized parton d…
We present a short overview on transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, giving their partonic interpretation and ways to access them. We then discuss the issue of their universality and its connection to factorization in perturbative QCD.
We discuss the relations between TMDs and PDFs in the framework of the covariant parton model. The quark OAM and its connection to TMDs are studied as well.
Transverse parton momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) of the nucleon are studied in a covariant model, which describes the intrinsic motion of partons in terms of a covariant momentum distribution. The consistency of the approach is demonstrated, and model relations among TMDs are studied. As a byproduct it is shown how the approach allows to formulate the non-relativistic limit.
The theoretical description of Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra over wide kinematic regions in energy, mass and transverse momentum requires not only fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations but also soft-gluon QCD resummations to all orders of perturbation theory. The latter are traditionally accomplished either by Parton Showers (PS) with Monte Carlo event generators or by (different versions of) analytical procedures. In this work we focus on issues involved in the matching of the fixed-order calculation and resummation, especially in the moderate to low mass and $p_{\bot}$ regio…
The current status of the theoretical understanding of the transverse-momentum dependent parton densities (TMDs) is discussed. Special attention is payed to the difference between the operator definitions of TMDs proposed so far, the treatment of specific divergences, the geometry of the gauge links, and the role of the soft factors.
The description of the Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectrum requires matching of fixed order QCD calculations with soft gluon resummation up to all orders in the QCD coupling. It has been noticed in the literature that a consistent description of DY data in a wide kinematic regime from fixed-target to LHC energies is problematic. In this talk the predictions for transverse momentum spectrum of DY data coming from experiments in very different kinematic ranges (NuSea, R209, Phenix, LHC 8 TeV and 13 TeV center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$) are calculated by applying transverse momentum dep…
Comparing the respective structures of the correlators defining generalized and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions, one finds possible relations between these two objects. Although it looks like the relations found do not hold in general, we show that they can be established at least in simple spectator model calculations. In addition, we discuss these relations in the context of generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions.
In this talk, we summarize how QCD evolution can be exploited to improve the treatment of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. The methods allow existing non-perturbative fits to be turned into fully evolved TMDs that are consistent with a complete TMD-factorization formalism over the full range of kT. We argue that evolution is essential to the predictive power of calculations that utilize TMD parton distribution and fragmentation functions, especially TMD observables that are sensitive to transverse spin.
In high-energy scattering processes involving two or more hadrons one can measure observables that are sensitive to partonic transverse momentum, which is encoded in so-called transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), also called TMDs. These functions correspond to Fourier transforms of matrix elements that contain process-dependent gauge links. As the energy associated to the collision process increases, one becomes more sensitive to the small-$x$ region which is dominated by gluon rather than quark TMDs. In this paper we study the leading-twist gluon TMDs in t…
We investigate the relations between transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in a light-front quark-diquark model motivated by soft wall AdS/QCD. Many relations are found to have similar structure in different models. It is found that a relation between the Sivers function and the GPD $E_q$ can be obtained in this model in terms of a lensing function. The quark orbital angular momentum is calculated and the results are compared with the results in other similar models. Implications of the results are discussed. Relations among diffe…
The focus of this talk is on the transverse components of parton momenta. Like for collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs), we are also in the case of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs, talking about forward matrix elements. While the collinear PDFs describe only spin-spin correlations, the TMD PDFs (or in short TMDs) include spin-momentum correlations, including also time-reversal-odd (T-odd) correlations. The latter are important in the description of single spin asymmetries. In this way TMDs open up new ways of studying the spin structure of hadrons or they can be used as tool…
The covariant parton model (CPM) is a consequent application of the parton model concept to the nucleon structure. In this model, there is a choice to put quarks either in a pure-spin state or in a mixed-spin state. We show that the mixed-spin version of the CPM does not support the quark-model relations among transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) which were shown to hold in a large class of quark models. One can enforce the quark-model relations to be valid in the CPM by imposing a condition which is equivalent to putting the quarks in a pure-spin state. This gives a compl…
We perform a calculation of inclusive $Z$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC taking into account the transverse momenta of the initial partons. We use the framework of $k_T$-factorization combining transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) with off-shell matrix elements. In order to do it we need to construct appropriate TMDs for lead nuclei which is done using the parton branching method. Our computations are compared with data from CMS taken at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV. The results are in good agreement with the measurements especially the transverse momentum di…
The leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are studied in a light-cone description of the nucleon where the Fock expansion is truncated to consider only valence quarks. General analytic expressions are derived in terms of the six amplitudes needed to describe the three-quark sector of the nucleon light-cone wave function. Numerical calculations for the T-even TMDs are presented in a light-cone constituent quark model, and the role of the so-called pretzelosity is investigated to produce a nonspherical shape of the nucleon.
Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions are a key ingredient in the description of spin and azimuthal asymmetries in deep-inelastic scattering processes. Recent results from non-perturbative calculations in effective approaches are reviewed, with focus on relations among different parton distribution functions in QCD and models.
Transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) are studied in the framework of quark models. In particular, quark-model relations among TMDs are reviewed, elucidating their physical origin in terms of the quark-spin structure in the nucleon. The formal aspects of the derivation of these relations are complemented with explicit examples, emphasizing how and to which extent the conditions which lead to relations among TMDs are implemented in different classes of quark models.
The CASCADE3 Monte Carlo event generator based on Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities is described. Hard processes which are generated in collinear factorization with LO multileg or NLO parton level generators are extended by adding transverse momenta to the initial partons according to TMD densities and applying dedicated TMD parton showers and hadronization. Processes with off-shell kinematics within $k_t$-factorization, either internally implemented or from external packages via LHE files, can be processed for parton showering and hadronization. The initial state parton sho…
We investigate the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) in the quasi-parton-distribution framework. The long standing hurdle of the so-called pinch pole singularity from the space-like gauge links in the TMD definitions can be resolved by the finite length of the gauge link along the hadron moving direction. In addition, with the soft factor subtraction, the quasi-TMD is free of linear divergence. We further demonstrate that the energy evolution equation of the quasi-TMD a.k.a. the Collins-Soper evolution, only depends on the hadron momentum. This leads to a clear matching…
Being the "mother distributions" of all types of two-parton correlation functions, generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last years. We argue that exclusive double production of pseudoscalar quarkonia ($η_c$ or $η_b$) in nucleon-nucleon collisions gives access to GTMDs of gluons.
Previous Lattice QCD calculations of nucleon transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) focused on the case of transversely polarized nucleons, and thus did not encompass two leading-twist TMDs associated with longitudinal polarization, namely, the helicity TMD and the worm-gear TMD corresponding to transversely polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon. Based on a definition of TMDs via hadronic matrix elements of quark bilocal operators containing staple-shaped gauge connections, TMD observables characterizing the aforementioned two TMDs are evaluated, utilizing a…
We present studies of double longitudinal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator, which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model based on the fully differential cross section for the process. Additionally we employ Bessel-weighting to the MC events to extract transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and also discuss possible uncertainties due to kinematic correlation effects.
Using our formalism of parton virtuality distribution functions (VDFs) we establish a connection between the transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) ${\cal F} (x, k_\perp^2)$ and quasi-distributions $Q(y,P_z)$ introduced recently by X. Ji for lattice QCD extraction of parton distributions $f(x)$. We build models for PQDs from the VDF-based models for soft TMDs, and analyze the $P_z$ dependence of the resulting PQDs. We observe a strong nonperturbative evolution of PQDs for small and moderately large values of $P_z$ reflecting the transverse momentum dependence of TMDs. Thus, the stu…
Generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) are the most general parton correlation functions of hadrons. By considering the exclusive double Drell-Yan process it is shown for the first time how quark GTMDs can be measured. Specific GTMDs can be addressed by means of polarization observables.
We consider the problems of gauge invariance, path-dependence and treatment of overlapping UV/rapidity divergences peculiar to the transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). For different formulations of the TMDs available in the literature, we check the consistency of the TMD matrix elements with the collinear parton distribution functions possessing the well-known operator structure. Comparative on- and off-light-cone layout of the Wilson lines which secure the gauge-invariance of the TMDs is presented and briefly discussed.
We present studies of double longitudinal spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a new dedicated Monte Carlo generator, which includes quark intrinsic transverse momentum within the generalized parton model based on the fully differential cross section for the process. Additionally, we apply Bessel-weighting to the simulated events to extract transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and also discuss possible uncertainties due to kinematic correlation effects.
We present a solution of the DGLAP evolution equations, written in terms of Sudakov form factors to describe the branching and no-branching probabilities, using a parton branching Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate numerically that this method reproduces the semi-analytical solutions. We show how this method can be used to determine Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, in addition to the usual integrated parton distributions functions. We discuss numerical effects of the boundary of soft gluon resolution scale parameter on the resulting parton distribution functio…
We discuss the possibility of non-minimal gauge invariance of transverse-momentum-dependent parton densities (TMDs) that allows direct access to the spin degrees of freedom of fermion fields entering the operator definition of (quark) TMDs. This is achieved via enhanced Wilson lines that are supplied with the spin-dependent Pauli term $\sim F^{μν}[γ_μ, γ_ν]$, thus providing an appropriate tool for the "microscopic" investigation of the spin and color structure of TMDs. We show that this generalization leaves the leading-twist TMD properties unchanged but modifies those of twist three by contri…
We review quark model calculations of the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). For the T-even TMDs, we discuss the physical origin of model relations which hold in a large class of quark models. For the T-odd TMDs we review results in a light-cone constituent quark model (CQM) with the final state interaction effects generated via single-gluon exchange mechanism. As phenomenological application, we show the good agreement between results in the light-cone CQM and available experimental data for the Collins asymmetry.
The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution/fragmentation functions (TMDs) are essential in the factorization of a number of processes like Drell-Yan scattering, vector boson production, semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, etc. We provide a comprehensive study of unpolarized TMDs at next-to-next-to-leading order, which includes an explicit calculation of these TMDs and an extraction of their matching coefficients onto their integrated analogues, for all flavor combinations. The obtained matching coefficients are important for any kind of phenomenology involving TMDs. In the pre…
We briefly illustrate recent developments in the parton branching formulation of TMD evolution and their impact on precision measurements in high-energy hadronic collisions.
We review the current status of collinear and Transverse Momentum Dependent densities based on the Parton Branching method. We investigate the performance of the PB-TMD evolution as well as PB-TMD parton shower with different configurations of the hard process in the four- and five-flavour schemes.
Off-shell, transverse-momentum dependent splitting functions can be defined from the high-energy limit of partonic decay amplitudes. Based on these splitting functions, we construct Sudakov form factors and formulate a new parton branching algorithm. We present a first Monte Carlo implementation of the algorithm. We use the numerical results to verify explicitly momentum sum rules for TMD parton distributions.
The soft production problem in hadronic collisions as described in the eikonal color mutation branching model is improved in the way that the initial parton distribution is treated. Furry branching of the partons is considered as a means of describing the nonperturbative process of parton reproduction in soft interaction. The values of all the moments, <n> and $C_q$, for q=2,...,5, as well as their energy dependences can be correctly determined by the use of only two parameters.
We present a determination of parton densities at NLO obtained with the Parton Branching method using precision measurements of deep inelastic scattering cross sections at HERA. The two sets of parton densities shown in this work are obtained with the same angular angular ordering condition for the evolution scale and they differ in the chosen scale for the strong coupling evaluation, for which we consider two scenarios: the evolution scale, and the transverse momentum qT from the angular ordering prescription. The transverse momentum dependent densities obtained with the Parton Branching meth…
I report on precision comparisons of theoretical predictions for Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra from two approaches: the analytical resummation approach based on Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism and the parton branching (PB) approach to the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions.
We present a summary of a recent workshop held at Duke University on Partonic Transverse Momentum in Hadrons: Quark Spin-Orbit Correlations and Quark-Gluon Interactions. The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, and multi-parton correlation functions, were discussed extensively at the Duke workshop. In this paper, we summarize first the theoretical issues concerning the study of partonic structure of hadrons at a future electron-ion collider (EIC) with emphasis on the TMDs. We then present simulation results on experimenta…
It has been observed in the literature that measurements of low-mass Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra at low center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ are not well described by perturbative QCD calculations in collinear factorization in the region where transverse momenta are comparable with the DY mass. We examine this issue from the standpoint of the Parton Branching (PB) method, combining next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculations of the hard process with the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. We compare our predictions with experimental measurements at …
We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, an…
Generalized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs), as mother funtions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs), encode the most general parton structure of hadrons. We calculate four twist-two time reversal odd GTMDs of pion in a scalar spectator model. We study the dependence of GTMDs on the longitudinal momentum fraction $x$ carried by the active quark and the transverse momentum $|\vec k_T|$ for different values of skewness $ξ$ defined as the longitudinal momentum transferred to the proton as well as the to…
