We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions in the newly proposed quasi-parton distribution function framework in Euclidean space. A soft factor subtraction is found to be essential to make the TMDs calculable on lattice. We show that the quasi-TMDs with the associated soft factor subtraction can be applied in hard QCD scattering processes such as Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic collisions. This allows future lattice calculations to provide information on the non-perturbative inputs and energy evolutions for the TMDs. Extension to the generalized parton distributions and quantum phase space Wigner distributions will lead to a complete nucleon tomography on lattice.
Fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculations require a method to cancel infrared singularities. In a previous publication, I discussed the general setup for the subtraction method at NNLO. In this paper I give all subtraction terms for electron-positron annihilation associated with one-loop amplitudes with one unresolved parton. These subtraction terms are integrated within dimensional regularization over the unresolved one-particle phase space. The results can be used with all variants of dimensional regularization (conventional dimensional regularization, the 't Hooft-Veltma…
A new method to construct event-generators based on next-to-leading order QCD matrix-elements and leading-logarithmic parton showers is proposed. Matrix elements of loop diagrams as well as those of a tree level can be generated using an automatic system. A soft/collinear singularity is treated using a leading-log subtraction method. Higher order re-summation of the soft/collinear correction by the parton shower method is combined with the NLO matrix-element without any double-counting in this method.

We extend the Helac-Dipoles package with the implementation of a new subtraction formalism, first introduced by Nagy and Soper in the formulation of an improved parton shower. We discuss a systematic, semi-numerical approach for the evaluation of the integrated subtraction terms for both massless and massive partons, which provides the missing ingredient for a complete implementation. In consequence, the new scheme can now be used as part of a complete NLO QCD calculation for processes with arbitrary parton masses and multiplicities. We assess its overall performance through a detailed compari…
We consider the double-soft limit of QCD amplitudes with two massive quarks in a back-to-back kinematics accompanied by two soft partons. We integrate analytically the respective double-soft eikonal functions over the phase space of the two soft partons. Within the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme, our results may serve as one of the integrated subtraction terms needed for the analytic and fully-differential description of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to colour-singlet decay into massive partons or to heavy-quark pair production.
We derive the integrated forms of specific initial-final tree-level four-parton antenna functions involving a massless initial-state parton and a massive final-state fermion as hard radiators. These antennae are needed in the subtraction terms required to evaluate the double real corrections to $t\bar{t}$ hadronic production at the NNLO level stemming from the partonic processes $q\bar{q}\to t\bar{t}q'\bar{q}'$ and $gg\to t\bar{t}q\bar{q}$.
In this work, we present the extension of an alternative subtraction scheme for next-to-leading order QCD calculations to the case of an arbitrary number of massless final-state partons. The scheme is based on the splitting kernels of an improved parton shower and comes with a reduced number of final state momentum mappings. While a previous publication including the setup of the scheme has been restricted to cases with maximally two massless partons in the final state, we here provide the final state real emission and integrated subtraction terms for processes with any number of massless part…
We address the problem of decomposing graphs in perturbative QCD into terms associated with particular regions. Motivated by asking how to incorporate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in parton-shower algorithms, we require that: (a) The integrand for the hard part is to be integrable even if the corrections are applied to a process that is not infrared and collinear safe. (b) The splitting between the terms should be defined gauge-invariantly. (c) The dependence on cut-offs should obey homogeneous evolution equations. In the context of one-gluon-emission graphs for deep inelastic s…
We propose a new subtraction scheme for next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Our scheme is based on the momentum mapping and on the splitting functions derived in the context of an improved parton shower formulation. Compared to standard schemes, the new scheme features a significantly smaller number of subtraction terms and facilitates the matching of NLO calculations with parton showers including quantum interference. We provide formulae for the momentum mapping and the subtraction terms, and present a detailed comparison with the Catani-Seymour dipole subtraction for a variety of 2 -> 2 …
Perturbative calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order for multi-particle final states require a method to cancel infrared singularities. I discuss the subtraction method at NNLO. As a concrete example I consider the leading-colour contributions to e+ e- --> 2 jets. This is the simplest example which exhibits all essential features. For this example, explicit subtraction terms are given, which approximate the four-parton and three-parton final states in all double and single unresolved limits, such that the subtracted matrix elements can be integrated numerically.
Double parton scattering (DPS) processes in which there is a perturbative $1\to2$ splitting in both protons overlap with loop corrections to single parton scattering (SPS). Any fundamental theoretical treatment of DPS needs to address this double-counting issue. In this paper, we augment our Monte-Carlo simulation of DPS, dShower, to be able to generate kinematic distributions corresponding to the combination SPS+DPS without double counting. To achieve this, we formulate a fully-differential version of the subtraction scheme introduced in Diehl et al. (JHEP 06 (2017) 083). A shower is attached…
We present a subtraction method utilizing the N-jettiness observable, Tau_N, to perform QCD calculations for arbitrary processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). Our method employs soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) to determine the IR singular contributions of N-jet cross sections for Tau_N -> 0, and uses these to construct suitable Tau_N-subtractions. The construction is systematic and economic, due to being based on a physical observable. The resulting NNLO calculation is fully differential and in a form directly suitable for combining with resummation and parton showers. We exp…
We consider the extension of the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) subtraction method at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in perturbative QCD. While all the $q_T$-subtraction ingredients at $q_T \neq 0$ are known in analytical form, the third-order collinear functions and helicity-flip functions, which contribute only at $q_T=0$, are approximated using a prescription which uses the known result for the total Higgs boson cross section at this order. As a first application of the third-order $q_T$-subtraction method, we present the N$^3$LO rapidity distribution of the Higgs boson at the…
The computation of exclusive QCD jet observables at higher orders requires a method for the subtraction of infrared singular configurations arising from multiple radiation of real partons. We present a subtraction scheme relevant for NNLO perturbative calculations in $e^+e^- \to $ jets. The building blocks of the scheme are antenna functions derived from the matrix elements for tree-level $1\to 3$ and $1 \to 4$ and one-loop $1 \to 3$ processes. By construction, these building blocks have the correct infrared behaviour when one or two particles are unresolved. At the same time, their integral o…
We report on the computation of a class of integrals that appear when integrating the so-called iterated singly-unresolved approximate cross section of the NNLO subtraction scheme of [1-4], over the factorised phase space of unresolved partons. The integrated approximate cross section itself can be written as the product of an insertion operator (in colour space) times the Born cross section. We give selected results for the insertion operator for processes with two and three hard partons in the final state.
It is common lore that Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) in the $\overline{\rm { MS}}$ factorization scheme can become negative beyond leading order due to the collinear subtraction which is needed in order to define partonic cross sections. We show that this is in fact not the case and next-to-leading order (NLO) $\overline{\rm { MS}}$ PDFs are actually positive in the perturbative regime. In order to prove this, we modify the subtraction prescription, and perform the collinear subtraction in such a way that partonic cross sections remain positive. This defines a factorization scheme in wh…
We extend the dipole formalism for massless and massive partons to random polarisations of the external partons. The dipole formalism was originally formulated for spin-summed matrix elements and later extended to individual helicity eigenstates. For efficiency reasons one wants to replace the spin sum by a smooth integration over additional variables. This requires the extension of the dipole formalism to random polarisations. In this paper we derive the modified subtraction terms. We only modify the real subtraction terms, the integrated subtraction terms do not require any modifications.
I discuss the physical interpretation of GPDs in the limit $ξ=0$, where the $t$ dependence contains information about the distribution of partons in the transverse plane. GPDs thus allow a simultaneous determination of the longitudinal momentum and transverse position of partons in the infinite momentum frame, which also provides a physical interpretation for Ji's angular momentum sum rule.
The dipole subtraction method for calculating next-to-leading order corrections in QCD was originally only formulated for massless partons. In this paper we extend its definition to include massive partons, namely quarks, squarks and gluinos. We pay particular attention to the quasi-collinear region, which gives rise to terms that are enhanced by logarithms of the parton masses, M. By ensuring that our subtraction cross section matches the exact real cross section in all quasi-collinear regions we achieve uniform convergence both for hard scales Q ~= M and Q >> M. Moreover, taking the masses t…
By working out the kinematics of double parton scattering at short relative transverse distances, we obtain an explicit link between the transverse centres of mass, of the two hard partonic interactions, and the contributions to the process, due to pairs of interacting partons generated by perturbative splitting. One my thus foresee the interesting possibility of discriminating experimentally between contributions to the double parton scattering cross section, due to interacting parton pairs originated by independent evolution, and contributions, due to interacting parton pairs generated by sp…
Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with purely transverse momentum transfer can be interpreted as Fourier transforms of the distribution of partons in impact parameter space. The helicity-flip GPD $E(x,0,-\Dps)$ is related to the distortion of parton distribution functions in impact parameter space if the target is not a helicity eigenstate, but has some transverse polarization. This transverse distortion can be used to develop an intuitive explanation for various transverse single spin asymmetries.
The scale factor $σ_{eff}$, which characterizes double parton collisions in high energy hadron interactions, is a direct manifestation of the distribution of the interacting partons in transverse space, in such a way that different distributions give rise to different values of $σ_{eff}$ in different double parton collision processes. We work out the value of the scale factor in a few reactions of interest, in a correlated model of the multi-parton density of the proton recently proposed.
We discuss the parton branching (PB) evolution equation for transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), especially we concentrate on the angular ordering constrain and its effect on the TMD distributions. We discuss application of the PB TMDs to precise prediction of Drell-Yan transverse momentum spectrum at LHC, stressing the role of angular ordering in the low transverse momentum region. We compare the PB implementation of the angular ordering condition with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin-Watt (KMRW), both at the analytical and numerical level.
The cross section for transverse momentum dependent double parton scattering involves transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions (DTMDs). In the region of perturbative transverse momentum the DTMDs can be matched onto collinear double parton distributions. We present the framework and results for this matching, as well as the evolution equations for DTMDs in the region of large distance between the two partons. We discuss explicit results for one-loop matching coefficients and evolution kernels.
The quasi parton distribution is a spatial correlation of quarks or gluons along the $z$ direction in a moving nucleon which enables direct lattice calculations of parton distribution functions. It can be defined with a nonperturbative renormalization in a regularization independent momentum subtraction scheme (RI/MOM), which can then be perturbatively related to the collinear parton distribution in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. Here we carry out a direct matching from the RI/MOM scheme for the quasi-PDF to the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ PDF, determining the non-singlet quark matching coeffic…
We derive a nonperturbative transverse momentum distribution for partons using a potential model to describe the quark-quark interaction inside the proton. We use this distribution to calculate the diferential cross-section of $π^0$-production for intermediate values of transverse momentum in $p-p$ collisions at high energies. Assuming a variable string tension constant for the quark-quark potential we obtain a very good description of the experimental data at different energies. The corresponding values of the mean transverse momentum of the partons are essentially lower than those obtained u…
We study the impact of transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions on detailed features of multi-jet final states, focusing on angular jet correlations in DIS data.
I report on precision comparisons of theoretical predictions for Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra from two approaches: the analytical resummation approach based on Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism and the parton branching (PB) approach to the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions.
Off-shell, transverse-momentum dependent splitting functions can be defined from the high-energy limit of partonic decay amplitudes. Based on these splitting functions, we construct Sudakov form factors and formulate a new parton branching algorithm. We present a first Monte Carlo implementation of the algorithm. We use the numerical results to verify explicitly momentum sum rules for TMD parton distributions.
We review the current status of collinear and Transverse Momentum Dependent densities based on the Parton Branching method. We investigate the performance of the PB-TMD evolution as well as PB-TMD parton shower with different configurations of the hard process in the four- and five-flavour schemes.
Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions are analyzed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at low transverse momentum using soft-collinear effective theory. The transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions are defined on the lightcone without distorting the lightcone path nor adding additional soft Wilson lines. In this approach, the comparison between the integrated and unintegrated parton distribution functions becomes transparent. The procedure of computing radiative corrections in dimensional regularization is explained in detail, and the divergence…
We present a solution of the DGLAP evolution equations, written in terms of Sudakov form factors to describe the branching and no-branching probabilities, using a parton branching Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate numerically that this method reproduces the semi-analytical solutions. We show how this method can be used to determine Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, in addition to the usual integrated parton distributions functions. We discuss numerical effects of the boundary of soft gluon resolution scale parameter on the resulting parton distribution functio…
We present a new subtraction scheme for next-to-leading order QCD calculations, where the momentum mapping and the splitting functions have been derived in the context of an improved parton shower formulation. A main advantage of our scheme is the significantly reduced number of momentum mappings in the subtraction terms compared to standard schemes. We present the major features of our scheme and discuss the process e q -> e q (g) in more detail.
I give a brief historical account on the way I have been conducted to revive the concept of the transverse spin from previous studies on multiparton scatterings.
We propose the study of unpolarized transverse momentum dependent gluon parton distributions as well as the effect of linearly polarized gluons on transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production within the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization employing color evaporation model (CEM) in unpolarized proton-proton collision. We estimate the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ at LHCb, RHIC and AFTER energies using TMD evolution formalism.
The Parton Branching (PB) approach describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities. We propose to extend the PB method by including TMD splitting functions, instead of the DGLAP splitting functions which assume strong ordering in transverse momentum. We present the evolution equations and their numerical solution, which is the first Monte Carlo implementation including TMD splitting functions.
Transverse-momentum spectra in hard processes are typically described either in terms of intrinsic transverse momentum of partons, or in terms of perturbative radiation. The relation between these descriptions is discussed for the example of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, with special focus on the angular distribution of the observed hadron. This involves nontrivial theoretical issues, such as the proper definition of transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions, and has practical consequences for the description of pT spectra in phenomenology.
The conventional NLO parton model is enough for the description of total cross sections and one-particle distributions. In the case of two-particle correlations, the collinear approximation has failed, and it is necessary to account for the transverse momenta of initial partons. The different possibilities to do this are discussed.
The present knowledge on non-trivial relations between generalized parton distributions on the one hand and transverse momentum dependent distributions on the other is reviewed. While various relations can be found in the framework of spectator models, so far no model-independent non-trivial relations have been established.
Two factorization approaches have been proposed for single transverse spin asymmetries. One is the collinear factorization, another is the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization. They have been previously derived in a formal way by using diagram expansion at hadron level. If the two factorizations hold or can be proven, they should also hold when we replace hadrons with parton states. We examine these two factorizations at parton level with massless partons. It is nontrivial to generate these asymmetries at parton level with massless partons because the asymmetries require helicity-flip a…
We investigate the relations between transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in a light-front quark-diquark model motivated by soft wall AdS/QCD. Many relations are found to have similar structure in different models. It is found that a relation between the Sivers function and the GPD $E_q$ can be obtained in this model in terms of a lensing function. The quark orbital angular momentum is calculated and the results are compared with the results in other similar models. Implications of the results are discussed. Relations among diffe…
We propose a consistent treatment of divergences emerging in the computation of transverse-momentum-dependent parton densities in leading $α_s$-order of QCD perturbation theory.
The transverse-momentum dependent quark distributions are studied in the limit of the large number of colors Nc. The leading orders of Nc are determined for all twist-2 distributions including the T-odd functions. The isospin structure of the dominant contributions is found.
We perform calculations of Z+jet cross-section taking into account the transverse momenta of the initial partons. Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities obtained with the Parton Branching method are used and higher order corrections are included via TMD parton showers in the initial state. The predictions are compared to measurements of forward Z+jet production of the LHCb collaboration at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. We show that the results obtained in kT-factorization are in good agreement with results obtained from a NLO calculation matched with traditional parton showers. We also demon…
Transverse parton momentum dependent distribution functions (TMDs) of the nucleon are studied in a covariant model, which describes the intrinsic motion of partons in terms of a covariant momentum distribution. The consistency of the approach is demonstrated, and model relations among TMDs are studied. As a byproduct it is shown how the approach allows to formulate the non-relativistic limit.
We present analytic formulas that describe fully-differential production of color-singlet final states in $q\bar q$ and $gg$ annihilation, including all the relevant partonic channels, through NNLO QCD. We work within the nested soft-collinear scheme which allows for fully local subtraction of infrared divergences. We demonstrate analytic cancellation of soft and collinear poles and present formulas for finite parts of all integrated subtraction terms. These results provide an important building block for calculating NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at hadron colliders within the ne…
We present a fully differential description of a decay of a scalar Higgs boson into massive b-quarks valid at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We work within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme extended to accommodate massive partons. We include the loop-induced contribution involving a Higgs coupling to a top quark. We test our calculation against results existing in the literature, comparing the predictions for the total decay width and jet rates.
We perform a calculation of inclusive $Z$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC taking into account the transverse momenta of the initial partons. We use the framework of $k_T$-factorization combining transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) with off-shell matrix elements. In order to do it we need to construct appropriate TMDs for lead nuclei which is done using the parton branching method. Our computations are compared with data from CMS taken at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV. The results are in good agreement with the measurements especially the transverse momentum di…
Using partonic states we verify the transverse momentum dependent factorization for single transverse spin asymmetries in semi inclusive DIS at leading but nontrivial order of alpha_s. The factorization has been previously derived in a formal way by using diagram expansion at hadron level. We find with our partonic results that two relevant structure functions satisfy the factorization. Our results also satisfy the collinear factorization but with the perturbative coefficient different than that derived formally.
The proton's transverse polarization structure is examined in terms of the Lorentz-covariant Pauli-Lubanski vector in QCD. We find that there are contributions from leading, subleading, and next-to-subleading partonic contributions in the light-front system of coordinates. The subleading and next-to-subleading contributions are related to the leading one through Lorentz symmetry. And the leading contribution obeys a simple partonic angular momentum sum rule that gives a clear physical interpretation to a relation known previously.
An explicit evaluation of the two pion transverse momentum dependent parton distributions at leading twist is presented, in the framework of the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with Pauli-Villars regularization. The transverse momentum dependence of the obtained distributions is generated solely by the dynamics of the model. Using these results, the so called generalized Boer-Mulders shift is studied and compared with recent lattice data. The obtained agreement is very encouraging, in particular because no additional parameter has been introduced. A more conclusive comparison would require a precise …
We have investigated the transverse charge density for longitudinal and transversely polarized $ρ$ meson in light-front quark model (LFQM). Charge densities are obtained from the elastic form factors of the $ρ$ meson calculated in LFQM including the zero-mode contributions. We have computed the different helicity matrix elements of the $ρ$ meson. In addition to this, we have also presented the results for the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and impact-parameter dependent parton distribution functions (ipdpdfs) of the $ρ$ meson.
Our knowledge on the three-dimensional momentum structure of hadrons is encoded in the Transverse Momentum Dependent partonic distribution and fragmentation functions (TMDs). A brief and updated review of the TMDs and of the processes in which they might play a role is presented.
The hadron-energy evolution (Collins and Soper) equation for all the leading-twist transverse-momentum and spin dependent parton distributions is derived in the impact parameter space. Based on the result, we present resummation formulas for the spin structure functions in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering.
Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) provide three-dimensional images of the partonic structure of the nucleon in momentum space. We made impressive progress in understanding TMDs, both from the theoretical and experimental point of view. This brief overview on TMDs is divided in two parts: in the first, an essential list of achievements is presented. In the second, a selection of open questions is discussed.
Longitudinal and transverse parton distributions for pion and nucleon are calculated from hadron vertexes obtained by a study of form factors within relativistic quark models. The relevance of the one-gluon-exchange dominance at short range for the behavior of the form factors at large momentum transfer and of the parton distributions at the end points is stressed.
