By inserting interleavers between intermediate stages of the polar encoder, a new class of polar codes, termed interleaved polar (i-polar) codes, is proposed. By the uniform interleaver assumption, we derive the weight enumerating function (WEF) and input-output weight enumerating function (IOWEF) averaged over the ensemble of i-polar codes. The average WEF can be used to calculate the upper bound on the average block error rate (BLER) of a code selected at random from the ensemble of i-polar codes. Also, we propose a concatenated coding scheme that employs P high rate codes as the outer code and Q i-polar codes as the inner code with an interleaver in between. The average WEF of the concatenated code is derived based on the uniform interleaver assumption. Simulation results show that BLER upper bounds can well predict BLER performance levels of the concatenated codes. The results show that the performance of the proposed concatenated code with P=Q=2 is better than that of the CRC-aided i-polar code with P=Q=1 of the same length and code rate at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Moreover, the proposed concatenated code allows multiple decoders to operate in parallel, which can reduce the decoding latency and hence is suitable for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC).
We propose an alternative method for collaborative decoding of interleaved Reed-Solomon codes. Simulation results for a concatenated coding scheme using polar codes as inner codes are included.
Interleaved Reed-Solomon codes are applied in numerous data processing, data transmission, and data storage systems. They are generated by interleaving several codewords of ordinary Reed-Solomon codes. Usually, these codewords are decoded independently by classical algebraic decoding methods. However, by collaborative algebraic decoding approaches, such interleaved schemes allow the correction of error patterns beyond half the minimum distance, provided that the errors in the received signal occur in bursts. In this work, collaborative decoding of interleaved Reed-Solomon codes by multi-sequen…
We give here an efficient method to reconstruct the block interleaver and recover the convolutional code when several noisy interleaved codewords are given. We reconstruct the block interleaver without assumption on its structure. By running some experimental tests we show the efficiency of this method even with moderate noise.
For communication systems with heavy burst noise, an optimal Forward Error Correction (FEC) scheme is expected to have a large burst error correction capacity while simultaneously owning moderate random error correction capability. This letter presents a new FEC scheme based on multiple-symbol interleaved Reed-Solomon codes and an associated two-pass decoding algorithm. It is shown that the proposed multi-symbol interleaved coding scheme can achieve nearly twice as much as the burst error correction capability of conventional symbol-interleaved Reed-Solomon codes with the same code length and …
An alternative method for collaborative decoding of interleaved Reed-Solomon codes as well as Gabidulin codes for the case of high interleaving degree is proposed. As an example of application, simulation results are presented for a concatenated coding scheme using polar codes as inner codes.
An interpolation-based decoding scheme for interleaved subspace codes is presented. The scheme can be used as a (not necessarily polynomial-time) list decoder as well as a probabilistic unique decoder. Both interpretations allow to decode interleaved subspace codes beyond half the minimum subspace distance. Further, an efficient interpolation procedure for the required linearized multivariate polynomials is presented and a computationally- and memory-efficient root-finding algorithm for the probabilistic unique decoder is proposed. These two efficient algorithms can also be applied for acceler…
This paper is concerned with list decoding of $2$-interleaved binary alternant codes. The principle of the proposed algorithm is based on a combination of a list decoding algorithm for (interleaved) Reed-Solomon codes and an algorithm for (non-interleaved) alternant codes. A new upper bound on the decoding radius is derived and the list size is shown to scale polynomially in the code parameters. While it remains an open problem whether this upper bound is achievable, the provided simulation results show that a decoding radius exceeding the binary Johnson radius can be achieved with a high prob…
Interleaved Reed-Solomon codes admit efficient decoding algorithms which correct burst errors far beyond half the minimum distance in the random errors regime, e.g., by computing a common solution to the Key Equation for each Reed-Solomon code, as described by Schmidt et al. If this decoder does not succeed, it may either fail to return a codeword or miscorrect to an incorrect codeword, and good upper bounds on the fraction of error matrices for which these events occur are known. The decoding algorithm immediately applies to interleaved alternant codes as well, i.e., the subfield subcodes of …
We consider decoding of vertically homogeneous interleaved sum-rank-metric codes with high interleaving order $s$, that are constructed by stacking $s$ codewords of a single constituent code. We propose a Metzner--Kapturowski-like decoding algorithm that can correct errors of sum-rank weight $t <= d-2$, where $d$ is the minimum distance of the code, if the interleaving order $s > t$ and the error matrix fulfills a certain rank condition. The proposed decoding algorithm generalizes the Metzner--Kapturowski(-like) decoders in the Hamming metric and the rank metric and has a computational complex…
A new class of codes, Extended Product (EPC) Codes, consisting of a product code with a number of extra parities added, is presented and applications for erasure decoding are discussed. An upper bound on the minimum distance of EPC codes is given, as well as constructions meeting the bound for some relevant cases. A special case of EPC codes, Extended Integrated Interleaved (EII) codes, which naturally unify Integrated Interleaved (II) codes and product codes, is defined and studied in detail. It is shown that EII codes often improve the minimum distance of II codes with the same rate, and the…
Goppa Codes are a well-known class of codes with, among others, applications in code-based cryptography. In this paper, we present a collaborative decoding algorithm for interleaved Goppa codes (IGC). Collaborative decoding increases the decoding radius beyond half of the designed minimum distance. We consider wild Goppa codes and show that we can collaboratively correct more errors for binary Goppa codes than the Patterson decoder. We propose a modified version of the McEliece cryptosystem using wild IGC based on a recently proposed system by Elleuch et al., analyze attacks on the system and …
We study quantization of log-likelihood ratios (LLR) in bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) systems in terms of an equivalent discrete channel. We propose to design the quantizer such that the quantizer outputs become equiprobable. We investigate semi-analytically and numerically the ergodic and outage capacity over single- and multiple-antenna channels for different quantizers. Finally, we show bit error rate simulations for BICM systems with LLR quantization using a rate 1/2 low-density parity-check code.
The Welch--Berlekamp approach for Reed--Solomon (RS) codes forms a bridge between classical syndrome--based decoding algorithms and interpolation--based list--decoding procedures for list size l=1. It returns the univariate error--locator polynomial and the evaluation polynomial of the RS code as a y-root. In this paper, we show the connection between the Welch--Berlekamp approach for a specific Interleaved Reed--Solomon code scheme and the Guruswami--Sudan principle. It turns out that the decoding of Interleaved RS codes can be formulated as a modified Guruswami--Sudan problem with a specific…
The traditional definition of Integrated Interleaved (II) codes generally assumes that the component nested codes are either Reed-Solomon (RS) or shortened Reed-Solomon codes. By taking general classes of codes, we present a recursive construction of Extended Integrated Interleaved (EII) codes into multiple layers, a problem that brought attention in literature for II codes. The multiple layer approach allows for a hierarchical scheme where each layer of the code provides for a different locality. In particular, we present the erasure-correcting capability of the new codes and we show that the…
Due to the recent challenges in post-quantum cryptography, several new approaches for code-based cryptography have been proposed. For example, a variant of the McEliece cryptosystem based on interleaved codes was proposed. In order to deem such new settings secure, we first need to understand and analyze the complexity of the underlying problem, in this case the problem of decoding a random interleaved code. A simple approach to decode such codes, would be to randomly choose a vector in the row span of the received matrix and run a classical information set decoding algorithm on this erroneous…
We propose a new partial decoding algorithm for $m$-interleaved Reed--Solomon (IRS) codes that can decode, with high probability, a random error of relative weight $1-R^{\frac{m}{m+1}}$ at all code rates $R$, in time polynomial in the code length $n$. For $m>2$, this is an asymptotic improvement over the previous state-of-the-art for all rates, and the first improvement for $R>1/3$ in the last $20$ years. The method combines collaborative decoding of IRS codes with power decoding up to the Johnson radius.
Product LDPC codes take advantage of LDPC decoding algorithms and the high minimum distance of product codes. We propose to add suitable interleavers to improve the waterfall performance of LDPC decoding. Interleaving also reduces the number of low weight codewords, that gives a further advantage in the error floor region.
Integrated Interleaved (II) and Extended Integrated Interleaved (EII) codes are a versatile alternative for Locally Recoverable (LRC) codes, since they require fields of relatively small size. II and EII codes are generally defined over Reed-Solomon type of codes. A new comprehensive definition of EII codes is presented, allowing for EII codes over any field, and in particular, over the binary field $GF(2)$. The traditional definition of II and EII codes is shown to be a special case of the new definition. Improvements over previous constructions of LRC codes, in particular, for binary codes, …
This paper presents an algorithm for decoding homogeneous interleaved codes of high interleaving order in the rank metric. The new decoder is an adaption of the Hamming-metric decoder by Metzner and Kapturowski (1990) and guarantees to correct all rank errors of weight up to $d-2$ whose rank over the large base field of the code equals the number of errors, where $d$ is the minimum rank distance of the underlying code. In contrast to previously-known decoding algorithms, the new decoder works for any rank-metric code, not only Gabidulin codes. It is purely based on linear-algebraic computation…
A scheme for concatenating the recently invented polar codes with non-binary MDS codes, as Reed-Solomon codes, is considered. By concatenating binary polar codes with interleaved Reed-Solomon codes, we prove that the proposed concatenation scheme captures the capacity-achieving property of polar codes, while having a significantly better error-decay rate. We show that for any $ε> 0$, and total frame length $N$, the parameters of the scheme can be set such that the frame error probability is less than $2^{-N^{1-ε}}$, while the scheme is still capacity achieving. This improves upon $2^{-N^{0.5-ε…
We define multi-block interleaved codes as codes that allow reading information from either a small sub-block or from a larger full block. The former offers faster access, while the latter provides better reliability. We specify the correction capability of the sub-block code through its gap $t$ from optimal minimum distance, and look to have full-block minimum distance that grows with the parameter $t$. We construct two families of such codes when the number of sub-blocks is $3$. The codes match the distance properties of known integrated-interleaving codes, but with the added feature of mapp…
Considerable interest has been paid in recent literature to codes combining local and global properties for erasure correction. Applications are in cloud type of implementations, in which fast recovery of a failed storage device is important, but additional protection is required in order to avoid data loss, and in RAID type of architectures, in which total device failures coexist with silent failures at the page or sector level in each device. Existing solutions to these problems require in general relatively large finite fields. The techniques of Integrated Interleaved Codes (which are close…
Generalized Goppa codes are defined by a code locator set $\mathcal{L}$ of polynomials and a Goppa polynomial $G(x)$. When the degree of all code locator polynomials in $\mathcal{L}$ is one, generalized Goppa codes are classical Goppa codes. In this work, binary generalized Goppa codes are investigated. First, a parity-check matrix for these codes with code locators of any degree is derived. A careful selection of the code locators leads to a lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of generalized Goppa codes which improves upon previously known bounds. A quadratic-time decoding algorithm i…
In this paper we present a new algorithm for Polynomial Linear System Solving (via evaluation/interpolation) with errors. In this scenario, errors can occur in the black box evaluation step. We improve the bound on the number of errors that we can correct, using techniques inspired by the decoding procedure of Interleaved Reed-Solomon Codes.
We propose a new partial decoding algorithm for $h$-interleaved one-point Hermitian codes that can decode-under certain assumptions-an error of relative weight up to $1-(\tfrac{k+g}{n})^{\frac{h}{h+1}}$, where $k$ is the dimension, $n$ the length, and $g$ the genus of the code. Simulation results for various parameters indicate that the new decoder achieves this maximal decoding radius with high probability. The algorithm is based on a recent generalization of Rosenkilde's improved power decoder to interleaved Reed-Solomon codes, does not require an expensive root-finding step, and improves up…
We design the first efficient algorithms and prove new combinatorial bounds for list decoding tensor products of codes and interleaved codes. We show that for {\em every} code, the ratio of its list decoding radius to its minimum distance stays unchanged under the tensor product operation (rather than squaring, as one might expect). This gives the first efficient list decoders and new combinatorial bounds for some natural codes including multivariate polynomials where the degree in each variable is bounded. We show that for {\em every} code, its list decoding radius remains unchanged under $m$…
An efficient decoding algorithm for horizontally u-interleaved LRPC codes is proposed and analyzed. Upper bounds on the decoding failure rate and the computational complexity of the algorithm are derived. It is shown that interleaving reduces the decoding failure rate exponentially in the interleaving order u whereas the computational complexity grows linearly.
Recently, Martinez-Penas and Kschischang (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2019) showed that lifted linearized Reed-Solomon codes are suitable codes for error control in multishot network coding. We show how to construct and decode lifted interleaved linearized Reed-Solomon codes. Compared to the construction by Martinez-Penas-Kschischang, interleaving allows to increase the decoding region significantly (especially w.r.t. the number of insertions) and decreases the overhead due to the lifting (i.e., increases the code rate), at the cost of an increased packet size. The proposed decoder is a list deco…
We consider error decoding of locally repairable codes (LRC) and partial MDS (PMDS) codes through interleaved decoding. For a specific class of LRCs we investigate the success probability of interleaved decoding. For PMDS codes we show that there is a wide range of parameters for which interleaved decoding can increase their decoding radius beyond the minimum distance with the probability of successful decoding approaching $1$, when the code length goes to infinity.
Generalized Concatenated codes are a code construction consisting of a number of outer codes whose code symbols are protected by an inner code. As outer codes, we assume the most frequently used Reed-Solomon codes; as inner code, we assume some linear block code which can be decoded up to half its minimum distance. Decoding up to half the minimum distance of Generalized Concatenated codes is classically achieved by the Blokh-Zyablov-Dumer algorithm, which iteratively decodes by first using the inner decoder to get an estimate of the outer code words and then using an outer error/erasure decode…
In this paper, a code-based public-key cryptosystem based on interleaved Goppa codes is presented. The scheme is based on encrypting several ciphertexts with the same Goppa code and adding a burst error to them. Possible attacks are outlined and the key size of several choices of parameters is compared to those of known schemes for the same security level. For example, for security level 128 bits, we obtain a key size of 696 Kbits whereas the classical McEliece scheme based on Goppa codes using list decoding requires a key size of 1935 Kbits.
A new variant of bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is proposed. In the new scheme, called Parallel BICM, L identical binary codes are used in parallel using a mapper, a newly proposed finite-length interleaver and a binary dither signal. As opposed to previous approaches, the scheme does not rely on any assumptions of an ideal, infinite-length interleaver. Over a memoryless channel, the new scheme is proven to be equivalent to a binary memoryless channel. Therefore the scheme enables one to easily design coded modulation schemes using a simple binary code that was designed for that binar…
This paper investigates the design and performance of delayed bit-interleaved coded modulation (DBICM) with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. For Gray labeled square $M$-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations, we investigate the optimal delay scheme with the largest spectrum efficiency of DBICM for a fixed maximum number of delayed time slots and a given signal-to-noise ratio. When analyzing the capacity of DBICM, we find two important properties: the capacity improvement due to delayed coded bits being mapped to the real and imaginary parts of the transmitted symbols ar…
This paper investigates the design of spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes constructed from connected-chain ensembles for bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes. For short coupling lengths, connecting multiple SC-LDPC chains can improve decoding performance over single-chains and impose structured unequal error protection (UEP). A joint design of connected-chain ensembles and bit mapping to further exploit the UEP from codes and high-order modulations is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed design over existing connected-chain e…
The paper introduces the simultaneous partial-inverse problem (SPI) for polynomials and develops its application to decoding interleaved Reed--Solomon codes beyond half the minimum distance. While closely related both to standard key equations and to well-known Padé approximation problems, the SPI problem stands out in several respects. First, the SPI problem has a unique solution (up to a scale factor), which satisfies a natural degree bound. Second, the SPI problem can be transformed (monomialized) into an equivalent SPI problem where all moduli are monomials. Third, the SPI problem can be s…
In this paper, diversity analysis of bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB) is extended to the case of general spatial interleavers, removing a condition on their previously known design criteria and quantifying the resulting diversity order. The diversity order is determined by a parameter Qmax which is inherited from the convolutional code and the spatial de-multiplexer used in BICMB. We introduce a method to find this parameter by employing a transfer function approach as in finding the weight spectrum of a convolutional code. By using this method, several Qmax values are shown …
A new interpolation-based decoding principle for interleaved Gabidulin codes is presented. The approach consists of two steps: First, a multi-variate linearized polynomial is constructed which interpolates the coefficients of the received word and second, the roots of this polynomial have to be found. Due to the specific structure of the interpolation polynomial, both steps (interpolation and root-finding) can be accomplished by solving a linear system of equations. This decoding principle can be applied as a list decoding algorithm (where the list size is not necessarily bounded polynomially)…
We prove that Alekhnovich's algorithm can be used for row reduction of skew polynomial matrices. This yields an $O(\ell^3 n^{(ω+1)/2} \log(n))$ decoding algorithm for $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes of length $n$, where $ω$ is the matrix multiplication exponent, improving in the exponent of $n$ compared to previous results.
In this paper, the impact of Forward Error Correction (FEC) code namely Trellis code with interleaver on the performance of wavelet based MC-CDMA wireless communication system with the implementation of Alamouti antenna diversity scheme has been investigated in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) as a function of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) per bit. Simulation of the system under proposed study has been done in M-ary modulation schemes (MPSK, MQAM and DPSK) over AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel incorporating Walsh Hadamard code as orthogonal spreading code to discriminate the message signal for indi…
We propose the new rank-metric code-based cryptosystem LIGA which is based on the hardness of list decoding and interleaved decoding of Gabidulin codes. LIGA is an improved variant of the Faure-Loidreau (FL) system, which was broken in a structural attack by Gaborit, Otmani, and Talé Kalachi (GOT, 2018). We keep the FL encryption and decryption algorithms, but modify the insecure key generation algorithm. Our crucial observation is that the GOT attack is equivalent to decoding an interleaved Gabidulin code. The new key generation algorithm constructs public keys for which all polynomial-time i…

Reed-Muller codes are among the most important classes of locally correctable codes. Currently local decoding of Reed-Muller codes is based on decoding on lines or quadratic curves to recover one single coordinate. To recover multiple coordinates simultaneously, the naive way is to repeat the local decoding for recovery of a single coordinate. This decoding algorithm might be more expensive, i.e., require higher query complexity. In this paper, we focus on Reed-Muller codes with usual parameter regime, namely, the total degree of evaluation polynomials is $d=Θ({q})$, where $q$ is the code alph…
The capacity of the AWGN broadcast channel is achieved by superposition coding, but superposition of individual coded modulations expands the modulation alphabet and distorts its configuration. Coded modulation over a broadcast channel subject to a specific channel-input modulation constraint remains an important open problem. Some progress has been made in the related area of unequal-error protection modulations which can be considered single-user broadcast transmission, but it does not approach all points on the boundary of the capacity region. This paper studies broadcast coded modulation u…
In this work it is shown that locally repairable codes (LRCs) can be list-decoded efficiently beyond the Johnson radius for a large range of parameters by utilizing the local error-correction capabilities. The corresponding decoding radius is derived and the asymptotic behavior is analyzed. A general list-decoding algorithm for LRCs that achieves this radius is proposed along with an explicit realization for LRCs that are subcodes of Reed--Solomon codes (such as, e.g., Tamo--Barg LRCs). Further, a probabilistic algorithm of low complexity for unique decoding of LRCs is given and its success pr…
We show that decoding of $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes, as well as list-$\ell$ decoding of Mahdavifar--Vardy codes can be performed by row reducing skew polynomial matrices. Inspired by row reduction of $\F[x]$ matrices, we develop a general and flexible approach of transforming matrices over skew polynomial rings into a certain reduced form. We apply this to solve generalised shift register problems over skew polynomial rings which occur in decoding $\ell$-Interleaved Gabidulin codes. We obtain an algorithm with complexity $O(\ell μ^2)$ where $μ$ measures the size of the input problem an…
A commonly assumed drawback of multi-level coding, compared to a bit-interleaved coded modulation, is its high latency: Indeed, the levels must be decoded sequentially. In this paper, we consider polar codes to code each level. We show that the decoding time complexity of the multi-level scheme, using successive-cancellation list decoding for each polar code, is only 1.5 times the one of a single polar code, regardless of the signal-to-noise ratio and the number of levels.
In this paper, we design and compare multilevel polar coding (MLPC) and bit-interleaved polar coded modulation (BIPCM) for uplink sparse code multiple access (SCMA) systems that operate over fast and block fading channels. Both successive cancellation (SC) and successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithms are considered. Simulation results show that, with either decoder, BIPCM performs better than its MLPC counterpart. Also, both BIPCM and MLPC exhibit a performance advantage over LTE turbo-coded and WiMAX LDPC SCMA systems when the SCL technique is used for decoding.
We discuss the decoding of Gabidulin and interleaved Gabidulin codes. We give the full presentation of a decoding algorithm for Gabidulin codes, which as Loidreau's seminal algorithm consists in localizing errors in the spirit of Berlekamp-Welch algorithm for Reed-Solomon codes. On the other hand, this algorithm consists in acting on codewords on the right while Loidreau's algorithm considers an action on the left. This right-hand side decoder was already introduced by the authors in a previous work for cryptanalytic applications. We give here a generalised version which applies to the case of…
A capacity-achieving scheme based on polar codes is proposed for reliable communication over multi-channels which can be directly applied to bit-interleaved coded modulation schemes. We start by reviewing the ground-breaking work of polar codes and then discuss our proposed scheme. Instead of encoding separately across the individual underlying channels, which requires multiple encoders and decoders, we take advantage of the recursive structure of polar codes to construct a unified scheme with a single encoder and decoder that can be used over the multi-channels. We prove that the scheme achie…
Generalized Concatenated (GC), also known as Integrated Interleaved (II) Codes, are studied from an erasure correction point of view making them useful for Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks (RAID) types of architectures combining global and local properties. The fundamental erasure-correcting properties of the codes are proven and efficient encoding and decoding algorithms are provided. Although less powerful than the recently developed PMDS codes, this implementation has the advantage of allowing generalization to any range of parameters while the size of the field is much smaller than th…
A design of rate-compatible polar codes suitable for HARQ communications is proposed in this paper. An important feature of the proposed design is that the puncturing order is chosen with low complexity on a base code of short length, which is then further polarized to the desired length. A practical rate-matching system that has the flexibility to choose any desired rate through puncturing or repetition while preserving the polarization is suggested. The proposed rate-matching system is combined with channel interleaving and a bit-mapping procedure that preserves the polarization of the rate-…
Multilevel coding (MLC) is a coded modulation technique which can achieve excellent performance over a range of communication channels. Polar codes have been shown to be quite compatible with communication systems using MLC, as the rate allocation of the component polar codes follows the natural polarization inherent in polar codes. MLC based techniques have not yet been studied in systems that use spatial modulation (SM). SM makes the polar code design difficult as the spatial bits actually select a channel index for transmission. To solve this problem, we propose a Monte Carlo based evaluati…
