In this paper we study elliptic partial differential equations with rapidly varying diffusion coefficient that can be represented as a perturbation of a reference coefficient. We develop a numerical method for efficiently solving multiple perturbed problems by reusing local computations performed with the reference coefficient. The proposed method is based on the Petrov--Galerkin Localized Orthogonal Decomposition (PG-LOD) which allows for straightforward parallelization with low communcation overhead and memory consumption. We focus on two types of perturbations: local defects which we treat by recomputation of multiscale shape functions and global mappings of a reference coefficient for which we apply the domain mapping method. We analyze the proposed method for these problem classes and present several numerical examples.
In this paper, we consider several possible ways to set up Heterogeneous Multiscale Methods for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a highly oscillatory diffusion coefficient, which can be seen as a means to modeling rapidly varying ferromagnetic materials. We then prove estimates for the errors introduced when approximating the relevant quantity in each of the models given a periodic problem, using averaging in time and space of the solution to a corresponding micro problem. In our setup, the Landau-Lifshitz equation with highly oscillatory coefficient is chosen as the micro problem for all mod…
We consider numerical solution of elliptic problems with heterogeneous diffusion coefficients containing thin highly conductive structures. Such problems arise e.g. in fractured porous media, reinforced materials, and electric circuits. The main computational challenge is the high resolution needed to resolve the data variation. We propose a multiscale method that models the thin structures as interfaces and incorporate heterogeneities in corrected shape functions. The construction results in an accurate upscaled representation of the system that can be used to solve for several forcing functi…
A finite element method of any order is applied on a Bakhvalov-type mesh to solve a singularly perturbed convection--diffusion equation in 2D, whose solution exhibits exponential boundary layers. A uniform convergence of (almost) optimal order is proved by means of a carefully defined interpolant.
We consider a singularly perturbed reaction diffusion problem as a first order two-by-two system. Using piecewise discontinuous polynomials for the first component and $H_{div}$-conforming elements for the second component we provide a convergence analysis on layer adapted meshes and an optimal convergence order in a balanced norm that is comparable with a balanced $H^2$-norm for the second order formulation.
We consider a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem that has in addition a shift term. We show a solution decomposition using asymptotic expansions and a stability result. Based upon this we provide a numerical analysis of high order finite element method on layer adapted meshes. We also apply a new idea of using a coarser mesh in places where weak layers appear. Numerical experiments confirm our theoretical results.
We present robust and highly parallel multilevel non-overlapping Schwarz preconditioners, to solve an interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretization of a system of steady state, singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations with a singular reaction operator, using a GMRES solver. We provide proofs of convergence for the two-level setting and the multigrid V-cycle as well as numerical results for a wide range of regimes.
We consider the reaction diffusion problem and present efficient ways to discretize and precondition in the singular perturbed case when the reaction term dominates the equation. Using the concepts of optimal test norm and saddle point reformulation, we provide efficient discretization processes for uniform and non-uniform meshes. We present a preconditioning strategy that works for a large range of the perturbation parameter. Numerical examples to illustrate the efficiency of the method are included for a problem on the unit square.
A finite difference method is constructed to solve singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems posed on smooth domains. Constraints are imposed on the data so that only regular exponential boundary layers appear in the solution. A domain decomposition method is used, which uses a rectangular grid outside the boundary layer and a Shishkin mesh, aligned to the curvature of the outflow boundary, near the boundary layer. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed numerical algorithm.
Almost nothing is known about the layer structure of solutions to singularly perturbed Caputo fractional boundary value problems. We discuss simple convection-diffusion and reaction-diffusion problems.
We consider a system of two singularly perturbed Boundary Value Problems (BVPs) of convection-diffusion type with discontinuous source terms and a small positive parameter multiplying the highest derivatives. Then their solutions exhibit boundary layers as well as weak interior layers. A numerical method based on finite element method (Shishkin and Bakhvalov-Shishkin meshes) is presented. We derive an error estimate of order $O(N^{-1}\ln^{3/2}{N})$ in the energy norm with respect to the perturbation parameter. Numerical experiments are also presented to support our theoretical results.
We consider a second order singularly perturbed boundary value problem, of reaction-convection-diffusion type with two small parameters, and the approximation of its solution by the $hp$ version of the Finite Element Method on the so-called {\emph{Spectral Boundary Layer}} mesh. We show that the method converges uniformly, with respect to both singular perturbation parameters, at an exponential rate when the error is measured in the energy norm. Numerical examples are also presented, which illustrate our theoretical findings.
We derive a new residual-type a posteriori estimator for a singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem with obstacle constraints. It generalizes robust residual estimators for unconstrained singularly perturbed equations. Upper and lower bounds are derived with respect to an error notion which measures the error of the solution and of a suitable approximation of the constraining force in a $ε$-dependent energy norm and its dual norm. While the robust upper bound is proven for non-discrete obstacle function, the local lower bounds are derived for discrete obstacle functions. For the proof o…
A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. An analytic function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition and also satisfies the homogenous parabolic differential equation associated with the problem. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically, using an upwind finite difference operator combined with an appropriate layer-adapted mesh. The numerical method is shown to be parameter-uniform. Numerical results are pre…
In the recent article [Kopteva, N., Numer. Math., 137, 607--642 (2017)] the author obtained residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for singularly perturbed semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on anisotropic triangulations. The error constants in these estimates are independent of the diameters and the aspect ratios of mesh elements and of the small perturbation parameter. The purpose of this note is to improve the weights in the jump residual part of the estimator. This is attained by using a novel sharper version of the scaled trace theorem for anisotropic elements,…
The local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method is studied for a third-order singularly perturbed problem of the convection-diffusion type. Based on a regularity assumption for the exact solution, we prove almost $O(N^{-(k+1/2)})$ (up to a logarithmic factor) energy-norm convergence uniformly in the perturbation parameter. Here, $k\geq 0$ is the maximum degree of piecewise polynomials used in discrete space, and $N$ is the number of mesh elements. The results are valid for the three types of layer-adapted meshes: Shishkin-type, Bakhvalov-Shishkin type, and Bakhvalov-type. Numerical experiments a…
A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. A particular complimentary error function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically. A co-ordinate transformation is used so that a layer-adapted mesh can be aligned to the interior layer present in the solution. Numerical analysis is presented for the associated numerical method, which establishes that the numerical method is a…
In this paper, a class of linear parabolic systems of singularly perturbed second order differential equations of reaction-diffusion type with initial and Robin boundary conditions is considered. The components of the solution $\vec u$ of this system exhibit parabolic boundary layers with sublayers. A numerical method composed of a classical finite difference scheme on a piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh is suggested. This method is proved to be first order convergent in time and essentially first order convergent in the space variable in the maximum norm uniformly in the perturbation parameters
We propose a new first-order-system least squares (FOSLS) finite-element discretization for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations. Solutions to such problems feature layer phenomena, and are ubiquitous in many areas of applied mathematics and modelling. There is a long history of the development of specialized numerical schemes for their accurate numerical approximation. We follow a well-established practice of employing a priori layer-adapted meshes, but with a novel finite-element method that yields a symmetric formulation while also inducing a so-called "balanced" norm. We prove…
A parameter uniform essentially first order convergent numerical method for a parabolic singularly perturbed differential equation of reaction-diffusion type with initial and Robin boundary conditions
For singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems, supercloseness analysis of finite element method is still open on Bakhvalov-type meshes, especially in the case of 2D. The difficulties arise from the width of the mesh in the layer adjacent to the transition point, resulting in a suboptimal estimate for convergence. Existing analysis techniques cannot handle these difficulties well. To fill this gap, a novel interpolation is designed delicately for the first time for the smooth part of the solution, bringing about the optimal supercloseness result of almost order 2 under an energy norm f…
As a popular stabilization technique, the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method has significant application value in computational fluid dynamics. In this paper, we study the NIPG method for a typical two-dimensional singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem on a Shishkin mesh. According to the characteristics of the solution, the mesh and numerical scheme, a new composite interpolation is introduced. In fact, this interpolation is composed of a vertices-edges-element interpolation within the layer and a local $L^{2}$-projection outside the layer. On the basis of that, b…
A class of different schemes for the numerical solving of semilinear singularly--perturbed reaction--diffusion boundary--value problems was constructed. The stability of the difference schemes was proved, and the existence and uniqueness of a numerical solution were shown. After that, the uniform convergence with respect to a perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$ on a modified Shishkin mesh of order 2 has been proven. For such a discrete solution, a global solution based on a linear spline was constructed, also the error of this solution is in expected boundaries. Numerical experiments at the e…

A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with incompatible inflow boundary and initial conditions is examined. In the case of constant coefficients, a set of singular functions are identified which match certain incompatibilities in the data and also satisfy the associated homogenous differential equation. When the convective coefficient only depends on the time variable and the initial/boundary data is discontinuous, then a mixed analytical/numerical approach is taken. In the case of variable coefficients and the zero level of compatibility being satisfied (i.e. c…
We analyse the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method for two-dimensional singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. A class of layer-adapted meshes, including Shishkin- and Bakhvalov-type meshes, is discussed within a general framework. Local projections and their approximation properties on anisotropic meshes are used to derive error estimates for energy and "balanced" norms. Here, the energy norm is naturally derived from the bilinear form of LDG formulation and the "balanced" norm is artifically introduced to capture the boundary layer contribution. We establish a uniform converg…
In this paper, we analyze the supercloseness result of nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method on Shishkin mesh for a singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem. According to the characteristics of the solution and the scheme, a new analysis is proposed. More specifically, Gauß Lobatto interpolation and Gauß Radau interpolation are introduced inside and outside the layer, respectively. By selecting special penalty parameters at different mesh points, we further establish supercloseness of almost k + 1 order under the energy norm. Here k is the order of piecewise polynomials…
Deep learning-based numerical schemes such as Physically Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have recently emerged as an alternative to classical numerical schemes for solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). They are very appealing at first sight because implementing vanilla versions of PINNs based on strong residual forms is easy, and neural networks offer very high approximation capabilities. However, when the PDE solutions are low regular, an expert insight is required to build deep learning formulations that do not incur in variational crimes. Optimization solvers are also significantl…
Uniform convergence of finite element method on Bakhvalov-type mesh for a 2-D singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem with exponential layers
In this paper we analyze the error as well for the semi-discretization as the full discretization of a time-dependent convection-diffusion problem. We use for the discretization in space the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on a class of layer-adapted meshes including Shishkin-type and Bakhvalov-type meshes and the implicit $θ$-scheme in time. For piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k$ we obtain uniform or almost uniform error estimates with respect to space of order $k+1/2$ in some energy norm and optimal error estimates with respect to time. Our analysis is based on care…
In this paper, by employing the asymptotic expansion method, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a smoothing solution for a time-dependent nonlinear singularly perturbed partial differential equation (PDE) with a small-scale parameter. As a by-product, we obtain an approximate smooth solution, constructed from a sequence of reduced stationary PDEs with vanished high-order derivative terms. We prove that the accuracy of the constructed approximate solution can be in any order of this small-scale parameter in the whole domain, except a negligible transition layer. Furthermore, based on a si…
