Continued fractions over non-Euclidean imaginary quadratic rings

Algorithm 2 (a subroutine for Algorithm 1, which is the main continued fraction algorithm) has been added in version 4. This gives the continued fraction algorithm polynomial complexity as stated in Theorem 4.6
We propose and study a generalized continued fraction algorithm that can be executed in an arbitrary imaginary quadratic field, the novelty being a non-restriction to the five Euclidean cases. Many hallmark properties of classical continued fractions are shown to be retained, including exponential convergence, best-of-the-second-kind approximation quality (up to a constant), periodicity of quadratic irrational expansions, and polynomial time complexity.
We discuss continued fractions on real quadratic number fields of class number 1. If the field has the property of being 2-stage euclidean, a generalization of the euclidean algorithm can be used to compute these continued fractions. Although it is conjectured that all real quadratic fields of class number 1 are 2-stage euclidean, this property has been proven for only a few of them. The main result of this paper is an algorithm that, given a real quadratic field of class number 1, verifies this conjecture, and produces as byproduct enough data to efficiently compute continued fraction expansi…
Let $\ell>3$ be a prime such that $\ell \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\ell})$ has class number 1. Then Hirzebruch and Zagier noticed that the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-\ell})$ can be expressed as $h(-\ell) = (1/3)(b_1+b_2 + \cdots + b_m) - m$ where the $b_i$ are partial quotients in the `minus' continued fraction expansion $\sqrt{\ell} = [[b_0; \overline{b_1, b_2, \ldots, b_m}]]$. For an odd prime $p \neq \ell$, we prove an analogous formula using these $b_i$ which computes the sum of Iwasawa lambda invariants $λ_p(-\ell)+λ_p(-4)$ of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-\ell})$ and $\mathbb{…
We classify all quadratic imaginary number fields that have a Euclidean ideal class. There are seven of them, they are of class number at most two, and in each case the unique class that generates the class-group is moreover norm-Euclidean.
In this paper, we continue our previous work on the reduction of algebraic lattices over imaginary quadratic fields for the special case when the lattice is spanned over a two dimensional basis. In particular, we show that the algebraicvariant of Gauss algorithm returns a basis that corresponds to the successive minima of the lattice in polynomial time if the chosen ring is Euclidean.
Consider the representation of a rational number as a continued fraction, associated with "odd" Euclidean algorithm. In this paper we prove certain properties for the limit distribution function for sequences of rationals with bounded sum of partial quotients
In the article The third homology of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q})$, Hutchinson determined the structure of $H_{3}\left(\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}),\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{1}{2}\right]\right)$ by expressing it in terms of $K_{3}^{\mathrm{ind}}(\mathbb{Q})\cong \mathbb{Z}/24$ and the scissor congruence group of the residue field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $p$ a prime number. In this paper, we develop further the properties of the refined scissors congruence group in order to extend this result to the case of imaginary quadratic number fields whose ring of integers is a Euclidean domain with respect to the norm.
The Newton approximation, the Hurwitz continued fraction, and the Sierpinski series for relatively quadratic units over certain imaginary quadratic number fields
Consider the representation of a rational number in the form, associated with "centered" Euclidean algorithm. We prove a new formula for the limit distribution function for sequences of rationals with bounded sum of partial quotients.
We recall the notion of nearest integer continued fractions over the Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields $K$ and characterize the "badly approximable" numbers, ($z$ such that there is a $C(z)>0$ with $|z-p/q|\geq C/|q|^2$ for all $p/q\in K$), by boundedness of the partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion of $z$. Applying this algorithm to "tagged" indefinite integral binary Hermitian forms demonstrates the existence of entire circles in $\mathbb{C}$ whose points are badly approximable over $K$, with effective constants. By other methods (the Dani correspondence), we prove the exi…
The Lagrange theorem on continued fractions states that a number is a quadratic surd if and only if its continued fraction expansion is eventually periodic. The current paper is devoted to a multidimensional generalization of this fact. As a multidimensional analog of continued fractions so called Klein polyhedra are considered: given an irrational lattice in an n-dimensional Euclidean space, its Klein polyhedron is defined as the convex hull of nonzero lattice points with nonnegative coordinates.
In this paper, we present some generalizations of Lagrange's theorem in the classical theory of continued fractions motivated by the geometric interpretation of the classical theory in terms of closed geodesics on the modular curve. As a result, for an extension $F/F'$ of number fields with rank one relative unit group, we construct a geodesic multi-dimensional continued fraction algorithm to "expand" any basis of $F$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, and prove its periodicity. Furthermore, we show that the periods describe the relative unit group. By developing the above argument adelically, we also obtain …
This paper is a sequel to our previous work in which we found a combinatorial realization of continued fractions as quotients of the number of perfect matchings of snake graphs. We show how this realization reflects the convergents of the continued fractions as well as the Euclidean division algorithm. We apply our findings to establish results on sums of squares, palindromic continued fractions, Markov numbers and other statements in elementary number theory.
We study the generalized continued fraction expansions of complex numbers in term of elements from Euclidean subrings, especially Gaussian or Eisenstein integers, in a general framework as pursued in [3] and [1]. We introduce a common approach to studying the continued fraction expansions of zeroes of binary forms, via consideration of the action of the general linear group, and apply it to discuss expansions of quadratic surds on the one hand and of badly approximable numbers on the other hand. Also, we generalize the property of the simple continued fraction expansions that the convergents a…
We study the orbit of $\mathbb{R}$ under the Bianchi group $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $K$ is an imaginary quadratic field. The orbit, called a Schmidt arrangement $\mathcal{S}_K$, is a geometric realisation, as an intricate circle packing, of the arithmetic of $K$. This paper presents several examples of this phenomenon. First, we show that the curvatures of the circles are integer multiples of $\sqrt{-Δ}$ and describe the curvatures of tangent circles in terms of the norm form of $\mathcal{O}_K$. Second, we show that the circles themselves are in bijection with certain ideal…
Multidimensional continued fractions (MCFs) were introduced by Jacobi and Perron in order to generalize the classical continued fractions. In this paper, we propose an introductive fundamental study about MCFs in the field of the $p$--adic numbers $\mathbb Q_p$. First, we introduce them from a formal point of view, i.e., without considering a specific algorithm that produces the partial quotients of a MCF, and we perform a general study about their convergence in $\mathbb Q_p$. In particular, we derive some conditions about their convergence and we prove that convergent MCFs always strongly co…
We prove that the Steinberg module of the special linear group of a quadratic imaginary number ring which is not Euclidean is not generated by integral apartments. Assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis, this shows that the Steinberg module of a number ring is generated by integral apartments if and only if the ring is Euclidean. We also construct new cohomology classes in the top dimensional cohomology group of the special linear group of some quadratic imaginary number rings.
We generalize the Gaussian moat problem to the finitely many imaginary quadratic fields exhibiting unique factorization in their integers. We map this problem to the Euclidean minimum spanning tree problem and use Delaunay triangulation and Kruskal's algorithm to find moats in these fields in $O(|\mathbf{P}| \log |\mathbf{P}|)$ time, where $\mathbf{P}$ denotes the set of primes we are searching through. Our algorithm uses symmetry and boundaries to correctly and efficiently identify all moats, in order of increasing length, along with the farthest prime reached for each moat, in an underlying …
Let $R$ be the ring of $S$-integers in a number field $K$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\{β, β^{\ast}\}$ be the multi-set of roots of a nonzero quadratic polynomial over $R$. There are varieties $V(\mathcal{B})_{N,k}$ defined over $R$ parametrizing periodic continued fractions $[b_1,\ldots , b_N,\overline{a_1,\ldots ,a_k}]$ for $β$ or $β^{\ast}$. We study the $R$-points on these varieties, finding contrasting behavior according to whether groups of units are infinite or not. If $R$ is the rational integers or the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic field, we prove that the $R$-points of $V(\mathcal…
We consider three families of groups: the Bianchi groups SL(2,O) where O is the ring of integers of an imaginary, quadratic field; the groups SL*(2,O) where O is a *-order of a definite, rational quaternion algebra with an orthogonal involution; and the groups SL(2,O) where O is an order of a definite, rational quaternion algebra. We show that such groups are generated by elementary matrices if and only if O is semi-Euclidean (or *-semi-Euclidean), which is a generalization of the usual notion of a Euclidean ring. The proofs are surprisingly simple and proceed by considering fundamental domain…
The paper studies some properties of the ring of integer-valued quasi-polynomials. On this ring, theory of generalized Euclidean division and generalized GCD are presented. Applications to finite simple continued fraction expansion and Smith normal form of integral matrices with integer parameters are also given.
Upper and lower bounds are given for the maximum Euclidean curvature among faces in Bianchi's fundamental polyhedron for $PSL_2(O)$ in the upper-half space model of hyperbolic space, where $O$ is an imaginary quadratic ring of integers with discriminant $Δ$. We prove these bounds are asymptotically within $(\log |Δ|)^{8.54}$ of one another. This improves on the previous best upper-bound, which is roughly off by a factor between $Δ^2$ and $|Δ|^{5/2}$ depending on the smallest prime dividing $Δ$. The gap between our upper and lower bounds is determined by an analog of Jacobsthal's function, intr…
The fact that the euclidean algorithm eventually terminates is pervasive in mathematics. In the language of continued fractions, it can be stated by saying that the orbits of rational points under the Gauss map x-->{1/x} eventually reach zero. Analogues of this fact for Gauss maps defined over quadratic number fields have relevance in the theory of flows on translation surfaces, and have been established via powerful machinery, ultimately relying on the Veech dichotomy. In this paper, for each commensurability class of noncocompact triangle groups of quadratic invariant trace field, we constru…
