We use high-resolution, tunable angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the electronic properties of single crystals of MnBi2Te4, a material that was predicted to be the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator. We observe both bulk and surface bands in the electronic spectra, in reasonable agreement with the DFT calculations results. In striking contrast to the earlier literatures showing a full gap opening between two surface band manifolds along (0001) direction, we observed a gapless Dirac cone remain protected in MnBi2Te4 across the AFM transition (TN = 24 K). Our data also reveal the existence of a second Dirac cone closer to the Fermi level, predicted by band structure calculations. Whereas the surface Dirac cones seem to be remarkably insensitive to the AFM ordering, we do observe splitting of the bulk band that develops below the TN . Having a moderately high ordering temperature, MnBi2Te4 provides a unique platform for studying the interplay between topology and magnetic ordering.
Discovering new antiferromagnetic compounds is at the forefront of developing future spintronic devices without fringing magnetic fields. The antiferromagnetic gapless semiconducting D03 phase of V3Al was successfully synthesized via arc-melting and annealing. The antiferromagnetic properties were established through synchrotron measurements of the atom-specific magnetic moments, where the magnetic dichroism reveals large and oppositely-oriented moments on individual V atoms. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the stability of a type G antiferromagnetism involving only two-third …
Susceptibility and high field magnetization measurements have been performed on powder samples of an $S$=1 bond alternating chain compound [\{Ni(333-tet)($μ$-N$_3$)\}$_n$](ClO$_4$)$_n$ (333-tet=tetraamine N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,3-propanediamine). As the temperature is decreased, the susceptibility exhibits a round maximum at around 120 K and decreases gradually down to 10 K, and then falls down rapidly with a logarithmic curvature which is behavior of the susceptibility of a gapless or a nearly gapless antiferromagnetic chain. Magnetization up to 50 T at 1.4 K shows no or a very small gap i…
The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI, protected by a combination symmetry ) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel physics such as quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) within the AFM state, violating the definition of the AFM TI, as the surfaces being studied should be -breaking …

The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM-TI) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted intense attention, most of which lies on its electrical properties. In this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFM-TI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with non-zero …
The magnetization-induced gap at the surface state is widely believed as the kernel of magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) because of its relevance to various topological phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the axion insulator phase. However, if the magnetic gap exists in an intrinsic MTI, such as MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$, still remains elusive, with significant discrepancies between theoretical predictions and various experimental observations. Here, including the previously overlooked self-doping in real MTIs, we find that in general a doped MTI prefers a ground state with …
In commonly employed models for 2D topological insulators, bulk gapless states are well known to form at the band inversion points where the degeneracy of the states is protected by symmetries. It is thus sometimes quite tempting to consider this feature, the occurrence of gapless states, a result of the band inversion process under protection of the symmetries. Similarly, the band inversion process might even be perceived as necessary to induce 2D topological phase transitions. To clarify these misleading perspectives, we propose a simple model with a flexible Chern number to demonstrate that…
Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. It is most likely that the antiferromagnetic correlation plays an essential role of the gap opening.
Here we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. Our results not only provide key ingredients for understanding th…
The recent discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulators in Mn-Bi-Te family with intrinsic magnetic ordering have rapidly drawn broad interest since its cleaved surface state is believed to be gapped, hosting the unprecedented axion states with half-integer quantum Hall effect. Here, however, we show unambiguously by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that a gapless Dirac cone at the (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exists between the bulk band gap. Such unexpected surface state remains unchanged across the bulk Néel temperature, and is even robust against se…
The interaction between magnetic impurities and the gapless surface state is of critical importance for realizing novel quantum phenomena and new functionalities in topological insulators. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic experiments with density functional theory calculations, we show that surface deposition of Cr atoms on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ does not lead to gap opening of the surface state at the Dirac point, indicating the absence of long-range out-of-plane ferromagnetism down to our measurement temperature of 15 K. This is in sharp contrast to bulk Cr doping, and the origi…
Strained Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO $_3$ trilayers were grown on (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The coupling at the interfaces of several trilayers has been investigated from magnetization and electronic transport experiments. An increase of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ layer thickness induces a magnetic ordering in the strain layers and at the interfaces leading to ferromagnetic behavior and enhanced coercivity, while resistivity shows metal-like behaviors. These effects are not observed in the parent…
A bond-directional anisotropic exchange interaction, called the Kitaev interaction, is a promising route to realize quantum spin liquids. The Kitaev interactions were found in Mott insulators with the strong spin-orbit coupling, in the presence of quantum interference between indirect electron transfers. Here we theoretically propose a different scenario by introducing a polar structural asymmetry that unbalances the quantum interference. We show that the imbalance activates additional exchange processes and gives rise to a dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction, in stark contrast to th…
The great obstacle for practical applications of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is the lack of suitable QAH materials (Chern insulators) with large non-trivial band gap, room-temperature magnetic order and high carrier mobility. The Nickle chloride (NiCl3) monolayer characteristics are investigated herein using first-principles calculations. It is reported that NiCl3 monolayers constitute a new class of Dirac materials with Dirac spin-gapless semiconducting and high-temperature ferromagnetism (~400K). Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling, the NiCl3 monolayer becomes an intrinsi…
A combination of spectroscopic probes was used to develop a detailed experimental description of the transport and magnetic properties of superlattices composed of the paramagnetic metal CaRuO$_3$ and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO$_3$. The charge carrier density and Ru valence state in the superlattices are not significantly different from those of bulk CaRuO$_3$. The small charge transfer across the interface implied by these observations confirms predictions derived from density functional calculations. However, a ferromagnetic polarization due to canted Mn spins penetrates 3-4 unit …
Magnetic topological quantum materials (TQMs) provide a fertile ground for the emergence of fascinating topological magneto-electric effects. Recently, the discovery of intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi2Te4 that could realize quantized anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator phase ignited intensive study on this family of TQM compounds. Here, we investigated the AFM compound MnBi4Te7 where Bi2Te3 and MnBi2Te4 layers alternate to form a superlattice. Using spatial- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identified ubiquitous (albeit termination dependent)…
We present a series of models of three-dimensional rotation-symmetric fragile topological insulators in class AI (time-reversal symmetric and spin-orbit-free systems), which have gapless surface states protected by time-reversal ($T$) and $n$-fold rotation ($C_n$) symmetries ($n=2,4,6$). Our models are generalizations of Fu's model of a spinless topological crystalline insulator, in which orbital degrees of freedom play the role of pseudo-spins. We consider minimal surface Hamiltonian with $C_n$ symmetry in class AI and discuss possible symmetry-protected gapless surface states, i.e., a quadra…
We report first-principles calculations on antiferromagnetic spin ordering in graphene under biaxial strain. Using hybrid functional calculations, we found that semimetallic graphene sheets undergo a transition to antiferromagnetic insulators at a biaxial strain of 7.7% and that the band gap rapidly increases after the onset of this transition before reaching 0.9 eV at a biaxial strain of 12%. We examined the competition of the antiferromagnetic spin ordering with two-dimensional Peierls distortions upon biaxial strain, and found that the preceding antiferromagnetic insulator phase impedes the…
We report a systematic study of spin transport in antiferromagnetic (AF) insulators having a wide range of ordering temperatures. Spin current is dynamically injected from Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) into various AF insulators in Pt/insulator/YIG trilayers. Robust, long-distance spin transport in the AF insulators is observed, which shows strong correlation with the AF ordering temperatures. We find a striking linear relationship between the spin decay length in the AFs and the damping enhancement in YIG, suggesting the critical role of magnetic correlations in the AF insulators as well as at the AF/YIG in…
Inducing magnetic orders in a topological insulator (TI) to break its time reversal symmetry has been predicted to reveal many exotic topological quantum phenomena. The manipulation of magnetic orders in a TI layer can play a key role in harnessing these quantum phenomena towards technological applications. Here we fabricated a thin magnetic TI film on an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator Cr2O3 layer and found that the magnetic moments of the magnetic TI layer and the surface spins of the Cr2O3 layers favor interfacial AFM coupling. Field cooling studies show a crossover from negative to posit…
Nonsymmorphic symmetries like screws and glides produce electron band touchings, obstructing the formation of a band insulator and leading, instead, to metals or nodal semimetals even when the number of electrons in the unit cell is an even integer. Here, we calculate the electron fillings compatible with being a band insulator for all 230 space groups, for noninteracting electrons with time-reversal symmetry. Our bounds are tight - that is, we can rigorously eliminate band insulators at any forbidden filling and produce explicit models for all allowed fillings - and stronger than those recent…
We report intrinsic spin decay length of an antiferromagnetic insulator. We found that at an antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic interface, a spin current generated by spin pumping is strongly suppressed by two-magnon scattering. By eliminating the two-magnon contribution, we discovered that the characteristic length of spin decay in NiO changes by two-orders of magnitude through the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. The spin decay length in the antiferromagnetic state is longer than 100 nm, which is an order of magnitude longer than previously believed. These results provide a crucial…
We study theoretically a three-dimensional correlated and spin-orbit coupled system, the half-filled extended Fu-Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on a diamond lattice, focusing on the topological magnetoelectric response of the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In the antiferromagnetic insulator phase, the Dirac-like low-energy effective Hamiltonian is obtained. Then the theta term, which results in the magnetoelectric response, is derived as a consequence of the chiral anomaly. The realization of the dynamical axion field in our model is discussed. The relation with a symmetry broken phase induced by…
We investigate electromagnetic properties of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) thin film under external electromagnetic fields. The TCI thin film is a topological insulator indexed by the mirror-Chern number. It is demonstrated that the gap closes together with the emergence of a pair of gapless cones carrying opposite chirarities by applying in-plane magnetic field. A pair of gapless points have opposite vortex numbers. This is a reminiscence of a pair of Weyl cones in 3D Weyl semimetal. We thus present an a magnetic-field induced semimetal-semiconductor transition in 2D material. Thi…
We investigate a new class of topological antiferromagnetic (AF) Chern insulators driven by electronic interactions in two-dimensional systems without inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of a net magnetization, AF Chern insulators (AFCI) possess a nonzero Chern number $C$ and exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Their existence is guaranteed by the bifurcation of the boundary line of Weyl points between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a topologically trivial phase with the emergence of AF long-range order. As a concrete example, we study the phase structure of the honeycomb …
We search for dynamical magnetoelectric phenomena in three-dimensional correlated systems with spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the antiferromagnetic insulator phases where the dynamical axion field is realized by the fluctuation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. It is shown that the dynamical chiral magnetic effect, an alternating current generation by magnetic fields, emerges due to the time dependences of the order parameter such as antiferromagnetic resonance. It is also shown that the anomalous Hall effect arises due to the spatial variations of the order parameter such as antifer…
The van der Waals material CeOI is predicted to be a layered antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by DFT+U calculation. We successfully grow the CeOI films down to monolayer on graphene/6H-SiC(0001) substrate by using molecular beam epitaxy. Films are studied by {\it in-situ} scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, which shows a band gap of 4.4 eV. A metallic phase with composition unidentified also exists. This rare earth oxyhalide adds a new member to the two-dimensional magnetic materials.
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ is believed to be an axion insulator in its antiferromagnetic ground state. However, direct identification of axion insulators remains experimentally elusive because the observed vanishing Hall resistance, while indicating the onset of the axion field, is inadequate to distinguish the system from a trivial normal insulator. Using numerical Green's functions, we theoretically demonstrate the quantized magnetoelectric current in a tunnel junction of atomically thin ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ sandwiched be…
Topological insulators, in contrast to ordinary semiconductors, accompany protected metallic surfaces described by Dirac-type fermions. Here, we theoretically show another emergent two-dimensional metal embedded in the bulk insulator is realized at a magnetic domain wall. The domain wall has long been studied as ingredients of both old-fashioned and leading-edge spintronics. The domain wall here, as an interface of seemingly trivial antiferromagnetic insulators, emergently realizes a functional interface preserved by zero modes with robust two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, where pyrochlore iridi…
Quantum anomalous Hall effect, with a trademark of dissipationless chiral edge states for electronics/spintronics transport applications, can be realized in materials with large spin-orbit coupling and strong intrinsic magnetization. After Haldane seminal proposal, several models have been presented to control/enhance the spin-orbit coupling and intrinsic magnetic exchange interaction. After brief introduction of Haldane model for spineless fermions, following three fundamental quantum anomalous Hall models are discussed in this perspective review: (i) low-energy effective four band model for …
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
We propose a realization of the electric-field-induced antiferromagnetic resonance. We consider three-dimensional antiferromagnetic insulators with spin-orbit coupling characterized by the existence of a topological term called the $θ$ term. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the presence of the $θ$ term, we show that, in contrast to conventional methods using ac magnetic fields, the antiferromagnetic resonance state is realized by ac electric fields along with static magnetic fields. This mechanism can be understood as the inverse process of the dynamical chiral magnetic effec…
Three dimensional topological insulator represents a class of novel quantum phases hosting robust gapless boundary excitations, which is protected by global symmetries such as time reversal, charge conservation and spin rotational symmetry. In this work we systematically study another class of topological phases of weakly interacting electrons protected by spatial inversion symmetry, which generally don't support stable gapless boundary states. We classify these inversion-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors in the framework of K-theory, and construct their lattice models. We a…
Based on DFT and Berry curvature calculations, we predict that quantum anomalous hall effect (QAHE) can be realized in two dimensional anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) NiRuCl6 with zero net magnetic moment. By tuning spin-orbits coupling (SOC), we find that the topological properties of NiRuCl6 come from its energy band reversal. The results indicate that NiRuCl6 behaves as AFM Chern insulator and its spin-polarized electronic structure and strong spin-orbits coupling (SOC) are the origin of QAHE. Considering the compatibility between AFM and insulator, AFM Chern insulator is more suitable to realize …
Breaking time reversal symmetry in a topological insulator may lead to quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator phase. MnBi4Te7 is a recently discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulator with TN ~12.5 K, which is constituted of alternatively stacked magnetic layer (MnBi2Te4) and non-magnetic layer (Bi2Te3). By means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we clearly observe the electronic state present at a step edge of a magnetic MnBi2Te4 layer but absent at non-magnetic Bi2Te3 layers at 4.5 K. Furthermore, we find that as the temperature rises above TN, the edge state vanishes, wh…
Magnon-polarons, a type of hybridized excitations between magnons and phonons, were first reported in yttrium iron garnet as anomalies in the spin Seebeck effect responses. Here we report an observation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnon-polarons in a uniaxial AFM insulator Cr2O3. Despite the relatively higher energy of magnon than that of the acoustic phonons, near the spin-flop transition of ~ 6 T, the left-handed magnon spectrum shifts downward to hybridize with the acoustic phonons to form AFM magnon-polarons, which can also be probed by the spin Seebeck effect. The spin Seebeck signal is f…
Topological insulators in the Bi2Se3 family have an energy gap in the bulk and a gapless surface state consisting of a single Dirac cone. Low frequency optical absorption due to the surface state is universally determined by the fine structure constant. When the thickness of these three dimensional topological insulators is reduced, they become quasi-two dimensional insulators with enhanced absorbance. The two dimensional insulators can be topologically trivial or non-trivial depending on the thickness, and we predict that the optical absorption is larger for topological non-trivial case compa…
We study a general problem how the gap in a nonmagnetic band insulator closes by tuning a parameter. We review our recent results on the classification of all the possible gap closing in two and three dimensions. We show that they accompany the change of Z_2 topological numbers, and that the gap closings correspond to phase transitions between the quantum spin Hall and the insulator phases. Interestingly, in inversion-asymmetric three-dimensional systems there appears a gapless phase between the quantum spin Hall and insulator phases. This gapless phase is due to a topological nature of gap-cl…
The layered topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted great interest recently due to its intrinsic antiferromagnetic order, potentially hosting various topological phases. By temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy over a broad frequency range, we studied the changes in the optical conductivity of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ at the magnetic ordering temperature. The temperature dependence of several optical parameters reveals an anomaly at the magnetic phase transition, which suggests the correlation between the bulk electronic band structure and the magnetism. We relate our findings to recent…
Heusler compounds are widely studied due to their variety of magnetic properties making them ideal candidates for spintronic and magnetoelectronic applications. V$_3$Al in its metastable D0$_3$-type Heusler structure is a prototype for a rare antiferromagnetic gapless behavior. We provide an extensive study on the electronic and magnetic properties of V$_3$Al, V$_3$Ga and V$_3$In compounds based on state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. We show that the ground state for all three is a G-type itinerant antiferromagnetic gapless semiconductor. The large antiferromagnetic exchange in…
We consider antiferromagnets breaking both time-reversal (Theta) and a primitive lattice translational symmetry (T) of a crystal but preserving the combination S = Theta T. The S symmetry leads to a Z_2 topological classification of insulators, separating the ordinary insulator phase from the "antiferromagnetic topological insulator" (AFTI) phase. This state is similar to the "strong" topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry, and shares with it such properties as a quantized magnetoelectric effect. However, for certain surfaces the surface states are intrinsically gapped with a half-q…
The recent discovery of antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has triggered great research efforts on exploring novel magnetic topological physics. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the manipulation of magnetic orientation and order not only significantly affects material symmetries and orbital hybridizations, but also results in variant new magnetic topological phases in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. We thus predict a series of unusual topological quantum phase transitions that are magnetically controllable in the material, including phase transitions from AFM…
We explore the possibility of exciting spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic films by injecting spin current at the surface. We analyze both magnetically compensated and uncompensated interfaces. We find that the spin current induced spin-transfer torque can excite spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic materials and that the chirality of the excited spin wave is determined by the polarization of the injected spin current. Furthermore, the presence of magnetic surface anisotropy can greatly increase the accessibility of these excitations.
Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we visualized the native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Two native defects $\mathrm{Mn_{Bi}}$ and $\mathrm{Bi_{Te}}$ antisites can be well resolved in the topographic images. $\mathrm{Mn_{Bi}}$ tend to suppress the density of states at conduction band edge. Spectroscopy imaging reveals a localized peak-like local density of state at $\sim80$~meV below the Fermi energy. A careful inspection of topographic and spectroscopic images, combined with density functional theory calculation, suggests this re…
Heterostructures between topological insulators (TI) and magnetic insulators represent a pathway to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Using density functional theory based systematic screening and investigation of thermodynamic, magnetic and topological properties of heterostructures, we demonstrate that forming a type-I heterostructure between a wide gap antiferromagnetic insulator Cr$_2$O$_3$ and a TI-film, such as Sb$_2$Te$_3$, can lead to pinning of the Fermi-level at the center of the gap, even when magnetically doped. Cr-doping in the heterostructure increases the gap to …
The magnetic properties of the van der Waals magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ are investigated by magneto-transport measurements. We evidence that the relative strength of the inter-layer exchange coupling J to the uniaxial anisotropy K controls a transition from an A-type antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic-like metamagnetic state. A bi-layer Stoner-Wohlfarth model allows us to describe this evolution, as well as the typical angular dependence of specific signatures, such as the spin-flop transition of the uniaxial antiferromagnet and the switching fiel…
We present a physical scenario in which both Fermi arcs and two-dimensional gapless Dirac states coexist as boundary modes at the same two-dimensional surface. This situation is realized in topological insulator-Weyl semimetal interfaces in spite of explicit time reversal symmetry breaking. Based on a heuristic topological index, we predict that the coexistence is allowed when (i) the corresponding states of the Weyl semimetal and topological insulator occur at disconnected parts of the Brillouin zone separated by the Weyl nodes and (ii) the time-reversal breaking vector defining the Weyl semi…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
The intricate interplay between nontrivial topology and magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials has led to the emergence of many novel phenomena and functionalities. An outstanding example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, which was realized in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs) in the absence of magnetic field. Recently, the layered van der Waals compound MnBi2Te4 has been theoretically predicted and experimentally verified to be a TI with interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. It is a rare stoichiometric material with coexisting topology and magnetism, thus repr…
Spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) has been observed in Pt/NiO/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) heterostructures with characteristics very different from those in Pt/YIG. We show that the SMR in Pt/NiO/YIG strongly correlates with spin conductance, both sharing very strong temperature dependence due to antiferromagnetic magnons and spin fluctuation. This phenomenon indicates that spin current generated by spin Hall effect in the Pt transmits through the insulating NiO and is reflected from the NiO/YIG interface. Inverted SMR has been observed below a temperature which increases with the NiO thickness, suggesting…
