Dealing with one-dimensional diffusion operators, we obtain upper and lower variational formulae on the eigenvalues given by the max-min principle, generalizing the celebrated result of Chen and Wang on the spectral gap. Our inequalities reveal to be sharp at least when the eigenvalues considered belong to the discrete spectrum of the operator, since in this case both lower and upper bounds coincide and involve the associated eigenfunctions. Based on the intertwinings between diffusion operators and some convenient gradients with weights, our approach also allows to estimate the gap between the two first positive eigenvalues when the spectral gap belongs to the discrete spectrum.
The purpose of this note is to establish a Central Limit Theorem for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on the correct aymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson, and its extension to large families of Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin.
The eigenvalue problem of stochastic Hamiltonian systems with boundary conditions was studied by Peng \cite{peng} in 2000. For one-dimensional case, denoting by $\{λ_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ all the eigenvalues of such an eigenvalue problem, Peng proved that $λ_n\to +\infty$. In this short note, we prove that the growth order of $λ_n$ is the same as $n^2$ as $n\to +\infty$. Apart from the interesting of its own, by this result, the statistic period of solutions of FBSDEs can be estimated directly by corresponding coefficients and time duration.
In this short note, using the Kendall-Cranston coupling, we study on Kähler (resp. quaternion Kähler) manifolds first eigenvalue estimates in terms of dimension, diameter, and lower bounds on the holomorphic (resp. quaternionic) sectional curvature.
This paper can be thought of as a remark of \cite{llw}, where the authors studied the eigenvalue distribution $μ_{X_N}$ of random block Toeplitz band matrices with given block order $m$. In this note we will give explicit density functions of $\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}$ when the bandwidth grows slowly. In fact, these densities are exactly the normalized one-point correlation functions of $m\times m$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE for short). The series $\{\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}|m\in\mathbb{N}\}$ can be seen as a transition from the standard normal distribution to semicircle dist…
In this note, with the help of the boundary classification of diffusions, we derive a criterion of the convergence of perpetual integral functionals of transient real-valued diffusions. In the particular case of transient Bessel processes, we note that this criterion agrees with the one obtained via Jeulin's convergence lemma.
This note details the development of a discrete-time diffusion process to approximate the midnight customer count process in a $M_\textrm{per}/\textrm{Geo}_\textrm{2timeScale}/N$ system. We prove a limit theorem that supports this diffusion approximation, and discuss two methods to compute the stationary distribution of this discrete-time diffusion process.
The distribution of eigenvalues of N times N random matrices in the limit N to infinity is the solution to a variational principle that determines the ground state energy of a confined fluid of classical unit charges. This fact is a consequence of a more general theorem, proven here, in the statistical mechanics of unstable interactions. Our result establishes the eigenvalue density of some ensembles of random matrices which were not covered by previous theorems.
In this note we prove the strong Feller property of a strong Markov quasi diffusion process corresponding to an elliptic operator with merely bounded measurable coefficients. We also prove Hölder continuity of harmonic functions associated with the quasi diffusion process and Harnack inequality. As an application, we show that for such diffusion processes the probabilistic definition of a regular boundary point coincides with the 'analytic' one. The parabolic counterparts of these results are presented as well. The proofs are adaptations of arguments from \cite{KrS_79} and \cite{Kr_18}.
Let $X=(V, E)$ be a finite regular graph and $H_t(u, v), \, u, v \in V$, the heat kernel on $X$. We prove that, if the graph $X$ is bipartite and has four distinct Laplacian eigenvalues, the ratio $H_t(u, v)/H_t(u, u), \, u, v \in V,$ is monotonically non-decreasing as a function of $t$. The key to the proof is the fact that such a graph is an incidence graph of a symmetric 2-design.
Diffusion state distance (DSD) is a metric on the vertices of a graph, motivated by bioinformatic modeling. Previous results on the convergence of DSD to a limiting metric relied on the definition being based on symmetric or reversible random walk on the graph. We show that convergence holds even when the DSD is based on general finite irreducible Markov chains. The proofs rely on classical potential theory of Kemeny and Snell.
We prove that reflected Brownian motion with normal reflections in a convex domain satisfies a dimension free Talagrand type transportation cost-information inequality. The result is generalized to other reflected diffusions with suitable drifts and diffusions. We apply this to get such an inequality for interacting Brownian particles with rank-based drift and diffusion coefficients such as the infinite Atlas model. This is an improvement over earlier dimension-dependent results.
In a recent paper, Edelman, Guionnet and Péché conjectured a particular $n^{-1}$ correction term of the smallest eigenvalue distribution of the Laguerre unitary ensemble (LUE) of order $n$ in the hard-edge scaling limit: specifically, the derivative of the limit distribution, that is, the density, shows up in that correction term. We give a short proof by modifying the hard-edge scaling to achieve an optimal $O(n^{-2})$ rate of convergence of the smallest eigenvalue distribution. The appearance of the derivative follows then by a Taylor expansion of the less optimal, standard hard-edge scaling…
We investigate the close connection between metastability of the reversible diffusion process X defined by the stochastic differential equation dX_t=-\nabla F(X_t) dt+\sqrt2εdW_t,\qquad ε>0, and the spectrum near zero of its generator -L_ε\equiv εΔ-\nabla F\cdot\nabla, where F:R^d\to R and W denotes Brownian motion on R^d. For generic F to each local minimum of F there corresponds a metastable state. We prove that the distribution of its rescaled relaxation time converges to the exponential distribution as ε\downarrow 0 with optimal and uniform error estimates. Each metastable state can be vie…
A geometric reformulation of the martingale problem associated with a set of diffusion processes is proposed. This formulation, based on second order geometry and Ito integration on manifolds, allows us to give a natural and effective definition of Lie symmetries for diffusion processes.
Recently Johansson and Johnstone proved that the distribution of the (properly rescaled) largest principal component of the complex (real) Wishart matrix $ X^* \* X (X^t \*X) $ converges to the Tracy-Widom law as $ n, p $ (the dimensions of $ X $) tend to $ \infty $ in some ratio $ n/p \to γ>0. $ We extend these results in two directions. First of all, we prove that the joint distribution of the first, second, third, etc. eigenvalues of a Wishart matrix converges (after a proper rescaling) to the Tracy-Widom distribution. Second of all, we explain how the combinatorial machinery developed for …
In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes $$dX_t=\boldsymbol{b}(X_t)dt+\sqrt h\,dB_t$$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ when $\mathbf{b}$ admits the decomposition $\mathbf{b}=-(\nabla f+\mathbf{\ell})$ and $\nabla f \cdot \mathbf{\ell}=0$. In this setting, we first show that, when $h\to 0$, the principal eigenvalue of the generator of $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary $\partialΩ$ of $Ω$ is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from $Ω$, uniformly in the initial conditions $X_0=x$ within the compacts of $Ω$. The …
We consider the serve-the-longest-queue discipline for a multiclass queue with buffers of equal size, operating under (i) the conventional and (ii) the Halfin-Whitt heavy traffic regimes, and show that while the queue length process' scaling limits are fully determined by the first and second order data in case (i), they depend on finer properties in case (ii). The proof of the latter relies on the construction of a {\it deterministic} arrival pattern.
In this paper we study generalized time-fractional diffusion equations on the Poincarè half plane $\mathbb{H}_2^+$. The time-fractional operators here considered are fractional derivatives of a function with respect to another function, that can be obtained by starting from the classical Caputo-derivatives essentially by means of a deterministic change of variable. We obtain an explicit representation of the fundamental solution of the generalized-diffusion equation on $\mathbb{H}_2^+$ and provide a probabilistic interpretation related to the time-changed hyperbolic Brownian motion. We finally…
In the machine learning literature stochastic gradient descent has recently been widely discussed for its purported implicit regularization properties. Much of the theory, that attempts to clarify the role of noise in stochastic gradient algorithms, has widely approximated stochastic gradient descent by a stochastic differential equation with Gaussian noise. We provide a novel rigorous theoretical justification for this practice that showcases how the Gaussianity of the noise arises naturally.
We study the spectrum of the semiclassical Witten Laplacian $Δ_{f}$ associated to a smooth function $f$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$. We assume that $f$ is a confining Morse--Bott function. Under this assumption we show that $Δ_{f}$ admits exponentially small eigenvalues separated from the rest of the spectrum. Moreover, we establish Eyring-Kramers formula for these eigenvalues. Our approach is based on microlocal constructions of quasimodes near the critical submanifolds.
