Metal-organic frameworks are a novel family of chemically diverse materials, which are of interest across engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine-based disciplines. Since the development of the field in its current form more than two decades ago, priority has been placed on the synthesis of new structures. However, more recently, a clear trend has emerged in shifting the emphasis from material design to exploring the chemical and physical properties of those already known. In particular --- while such nanoporous materials were traditionally seen as rigid crystalline structures --- there is growing evidence that large-scale flexibility, the presence of defects and long-range disorder, are not the exception, but rather the norm, in metal-organic frameworks. Here we offer some perspective into how these concepts are perhaps inescapably intertwined, highlight recent advances in our understanding, and discuss how a consideration of the interfaces between them may lead to enhancements of the materials' functionalities.
Based on first principles calculations, we predict and characterize the flexibility of two aluminium-based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), CAU-13 and NOTT-300. Both materials have a wine rack topology similar to that of MIL-53(Al), the archetypal breathing MOF, yet their flexibility has not been demonstrated so far.
Organic-inorganic coupling in the hybrid lead-halide perovskite is a central issue in rationalizing the outstanding photovoltaic performance of these emerging materials. Here we compare and contrast the evolution of structure and dynamics of the hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and the inorganic CsPbBr3 lead-halide perovskites with temperature, using Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Results reveal a stark contrast between their order-disorder transitions, abrupt for the hybrid whereas smooth for the inorganic perovskite. X-ray diffraction observes an intermediate incommensurate phase…
A model describing the low density carrier state in an organic single crystal FET with high-$κ$ gate dielectrics is studied. The interplay between charge carrier coupling with inter-molecular vibrations in the bulk of the organic material and the long-range interaction induced at the interface with a polar dielectric is investigated. This interplay is responsible for the stabilization of a polaronic state with an internal structure extending on few lattice sites, at much lower coupling strengths than expected from the polar interaction alone. This effect could give rise to polaron self-trappin…
The synthesis and design of organic biradicals with tunable singlet-triplet gaps has become the subject of significant research interest, owing to their possible photochemical applications and use in the development of molecular switches and conductors. Recently, tetrathiafulvalene tetrathiolate (TTFtt) has been demonstrated to exhibit such organic biradical character in doubly ionized bimetallic complexes. In this article we use high-level {\em ab initio} calculations to interrogate the electronic structure of a series of TTFtt-bridged metal complexes, resolving the factors governing their bi…
The combined effect of bulk and interface electron-phonon couplings on the transport properties is investigated in a model for organic semiconductors gated with polarizable dielectrics. While the bulk electron-phonon interaction affects the behavior of mobility in the coherent regime below room temperature, the interface coupling is dominant for the activated high $T$ contribution of localized polarons. In order to improve the description of the transport properties, the presence of disorder is needed in addition to electron-phonon couplings. The effects of a weak disorder largely enhance the …
Surface recombination has a major impact on the open-circuit voltage ($V_\text{oc}$) of organic photovoltaics. Here, we study how this loss mechanism is influenced by imbalanced charge transport in the photoactive layer. As a model system, we use organic solar cells with a two orders of magnitude higher electron than hole mobility. We find that small variations in the work function of the anode have a strong effect on the light intensity dependence of $V_\text{oc}$. Transient measurements and drift-diffusion simulations reveal that this is due to a change in the surface recombination rather th…
Based on the assumption that the contact barrier height determines the current flow in organic semiconductor-based electronic devices, charge injection at metal-organic (MO) interfaces has been extensively investigated, while space-charge conduction in organic bulk is generally overlooked. Recent theoretical modeling and simulation have pointed out that such a simplification is questionable due to the hopping nature of charge injection and hopping-related space-charge conduction. Here we show experimentally that charge transport in metal-organic diodes is complex interplay between injection-li…
The simultaneous vertical-cavity and random lasing emission properties of a blue-emitting molecular crystal are investigated. The 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene samples, grown by physical vapour transport, feature room-temperature stimulated emission peaked at about 430 nm. Fabry-Pérot and random resonances are primed by the interfaces of the crystal with external media and by defect scatterers, respectively. The analysis of the resulting lasing spectra evidences the existence of narrow peaks due to both the built-in vertical Fabry-Pérot cavity and random lasing in a novel, surface-emitting…
Organic electronics is very promising due to the flexibility, modifiability as well as variety of the available organic molecules. Efforts are going on to use organic materials for the realization of memory devices. In this regard resistive switching devices surely will play a key role. In this paper an effort has been made to illustrate the general information about resistive switching devices as well as switching mechanisms involving organic materials. As a whole a general overview of the emerging topic resistive switching has been given.
Using a combination of Rietveld and RMC refinement of neutron total scattering data, we find that the 10 K structure of zinc(II) isonicotinate shows strong evidence of static disorder. This disorder takes the form of transverse displacements of the isonicotinate ligand and results in elongated atomic displacement parameters and dampened oscillations of the experimental G(r). We analyse the RMC configurations using an approach derived from geometric algebra. Complications regarding the inclusion of hydrogenous guest molecules within the pore structure are discussed. This study highlights the wa…
We have theoretically investigated the elastic properties of three topologically identical zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: ZIF-4, ZIF-62 and TIF-4, by means of ab initio calculations. The ZIFs are a subset of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), whose versatile functionality is providing exciting opportunities in solid state science. Understanding the relationship between structure and elastic properties of hybrid materials is making it possible to develop a new generation of functional materials. In this work we have determined the bulk ($K$), shear ($G$) and Young's moduli ($E$), together with …
In hybrid perovskites, the organic molecules and inorganic frameworks exhibit distinct static and dynamic characteristics. Their coupling will lead to unprecedented phenomena, which have attracted wide research interests. In this paper, we employed Deep Potential molecular dynamics (DPMD), a large-scale MD simulation scheme with DFT accuracy, to study $\mathrm{FA/MAPbI_3}$ hybrid perovskites. A spontaneous hybrid nano-domain behavior, namely multiple molecular rotation nano-domains embedded into a single $\mathrm{[PbI_6]^{4-}}$ octahedra rotation domain, was firstly discovered at low temperatu…
We explore the charge transport mechanism in organic semiconductors based on a model that accounts for the thermal intermolecular disorder at work in pure crystalline compounds, as well as extrinsic sources of disorder that are present in current experimental devices. Starting from the Kubo formula, we develop a theoretical framework that relates the time-dependent quantum dynamics of electrons to the frequency-dependent conductivity. The electron mobility is then calculated through a relaxation time approximation that accounts for quantum localization corrections beyond Boltzmann theory, and …
Organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HaPs) are intensively studied for their light-harvesting properties. Owing to the interplay between strong electron-electron interaction and spin-orbit coupling (SOC), their quantitative theoretical description is still a challenge as evidenced by the wide variety of results available in literature. Here, various methodologies for computing their electronic structure are evaluated, also accounting for SOC. More specific, the GW approach as well as variants of the hybrid functionals PBE0 and HSE are at the center of our investigations. For both functi…
In a first-principles study based on density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, we address the interplay between intra- and intermolecular interactions in a J-aggregate formed by push-pull organic dyes by investigating its electronic and optical properties. We find that the most intense excitation dominating the spectral onset of the aggregate, i.e., the J-band, exhibits a combination of intramolecular charge transfer, coming from the push-pull character of the constituting dyes, and intermolecular charge transfer, due to the dense molecular packing. We also show the presence…
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a high degree of chemical and structural flexibility. There is a large family of COFs built from 2D sheets that are stacked to form extended crystals. While it has been common to represent the stacking as eclipsed with one repeating layer ("AA"), there is growing evidence that a more diverse range of stacking sequences is accessible. Herein, we report a computational study of layer stacking in two prototypical COFs, Tp-Azo and DAAQ-TFP, which have shown high performance as Li-ion battery electrodes. We find a striking preference for slipped structures w…
Engineering the electronic structure of organics through interface manipulation, particularly the interface dipole and the barriers to charge carrier injection, is of essential importance to improved organic devices. This requires the meticulous fabrication of desired organic structures by precisely controlling the interactions between molecules. The well-known principles of organic coordination chemistry cannot be applied without proper consideration of extra molecular hybridization, charge transer and dipole formation at the interfaces. Here we identify the interplay between energy level ali…
Entropy is a critical, but often overlooked, factor in determining the relative stabilities of crystal phases. The importance of entropy is most pronounced in softer materials, where small changes in free energy can drive phase transitions, which has recently been demonstrated in the case of organic-inorganic hybrid-formate perovskites. In this study we demonstrate the interplay between composition and crystal-structure that is responsible for the particularly pronounced role of entropy in determining polymorphism in hybrid organic-inorganic materials. Using ab initio based lattice dynamics we…
Single-crystal organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on p-channel molecular semiconductors have led to breakthrough carrier mobilities and to the observation of band-like transport. These results represent the limit in our quest for the ultimate OFET performance. However, band-like transport has not been reported for n-channel OFETs and, for p-channel transistors, it is not understood why it occurs only for certain molecular materials. Here we report band-like electron transport for n-channel OFETs based on PDIF-CN2 single-crystals. Devices with different gate dielectrics - vacuum, Cy…

Molecular electronics is becoming more and more attractive owing to the advantages of easy molecular structure variability, flexibility, low-cost and compatibility with bioelectronics. In this handbook chapter, we reviewed the recent research progress of molecular electronics, especially the studies on nanoscale information memories, from the viewpoints of structure-property relationship. Metal-organic frameworks comprehend a wide class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials with general structure A$_m$BX$_n$, with $A$ and $X$ being organic molecules and B a metal cation. This often results in enhanced structural flexibility and new functionalities. Hybrid perovskites ABX$_3$ are a well-known example.} In an Iron-based perovskites, (DMA)Fe^{II-III}(COOH)_3, dimethylammonium (DMA) molecules are organized in a hexagonal structure. They are orientationally disordered at high temperatures, but order at around $T=100$~K in a peculiar toroidal pattern. Recent experimental and theoreti…
Organic solar cells have the potential for widespread usage due to their promise of low cost, roll-to-roll manufacturability, and mechanical flexibility. However, deployment is impeded by their relatively low power conversion efficiencies. The last decade has seen significant progress in enhancing the power conversion of these devices through various strategies. One such approach is based on morphology control. This is because morphology affects all phenomena involved in solar conversion: light absorption and electron-hole pair (exciton) generation; exciton diffusion and dissociation into free…
The future of 2D flexible electronics relies on the preparation of conducting ultrathin films of materials with mechanical robustness and flexibility in a simple but controlled manner. In this respect, metal-organic compounds present advantages over inorganic laminar crystals owing to their structural, chemical and functional diversity. While most metal-organic compounds are usually prepared in bulk, recent work has shown that some of them are processable down to low dimensional forms. Here we report the one-pot preparation, carried out at the water-air interface, of ultrathin (down to 4 nm) f…
Pillared Graphene Frameworks are a novel class of microporous materials made by graphene sheets separated by organic spacers. One of their main features is that the pillar type and density can be chosen to tune the material properties. In this work, we present a computer simulation study of adsorption and dynamics of H$_{4}$, CH$_{2}$, CO$_{2}$, N$_{2}$ and O$_{2}$ and binary mixtures thereof, in Pillared Graphene Frameworks with nitrogen-containing organic spacers. In general, we find that pillar density plays the most important role in determining gas adsorption. In the low-pressure regime (…
Electron coupling to intra- and inter-molecular vibrational modes is investigated in models appropriate to single crystal organic semiconductors, such as oligoacenes. Focus is on spectral and transport properties of these systems beyond perturbative approaches. The interplay between different couplings strongly affects the temperature band renormalization that is the result of a subtle equilibrium between opposite tendencies: band narrowing due to interaction with local modes, band widening due to electron coupling to non local modes. The model provides an accurate description of the mobility …
The thermodynamic limit for the efficiency of solar cells is predominantly defined by the energy bandgap of the used semiconductor. In case of organic solar cells both energetics and kinetics of three different species play role: excitons, charge transfer states and charge separated states. In this work, we clarify the effect of the relative energetics and kinetics of these species on the recombination and generation dynamics. Making use of detailed balance, we develop an analytical framework describing how the intricate interplay between the different species influence the photocurrent genera…
The combination of two-dimensional (2D) materials into vertical heterostructures has emerged as a promising path to designer quantum materials with exotic properties. Here, we extend this concept from inorganic 2D materials to 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that offer additional flexibility in realizing designer heterostructures. We successfully fabricate a monolayer 2D Cu-dicyanoanthracene MOF on a 2D van der Waals NbSe$_2$ superconducting substrate. The structural and electronic properties of two different phases of the 2D MOF are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling micro…
Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention due to their low-cost fabrication, flexibility, and high-power conversion efficiency. More recent efforts show that the reduction from three- to two-dimensions (2D) of organic-inorganic halide perovskites promises an exciting opportunity to tune their electronic properties. Here, we explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and heterostructure engineering on the intrinsic material properties, such as energy stability, bandgap and transport properties of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites using first-pr…
The results are presented of a detailed combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the influence of coadsorbed electron-donating alkali atoms and the prototypical electron acceptor molecule TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) on the Ag(100) surface. Several coadsorption phases were characterised by scanning tunnelling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and soft-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Quantitative structural data were obtained using normal incidence X-ray standing wave (NIXSW) measurements and compared with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calc…
Kitaev's honeycomb lattice spin model is a remarkable exactly solvable model, which has a particular type of spin liquid (Kitaev spin liquid) as the ground state. Although its possible realization in iridates and $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been vigorously discussed recently, these materials have substantial non-Kitaev direct exchange interactions and do not have a spin liquid ground state. We propose metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Ru$^{3+}$ (or Os$^{3+}$) forming the honeycomb lattice as promising candidates for a more ideal realization of Kitaev-type spin models where the direct exchange interact…
Materials that change their magnetic properties in response to the external stimuli have long been of interest for their potential applicability in magnetic storage device, spintronics and smart magnetic materials. Organic materials are suitable candidates for such materials due to their chemical diversity, flexibility and designablity. However, most methods used for changing magnetism are inefficient or destructive to the magnetic material. Hence there is a need for innovation in this field. Here we report high-performance magnetic control of a gas-responsive single-molecule magnet (SMM). The…
Breathing transitions represent recently discovered adsorption-induced structural transformations between large-pore and narrow-pore conformations in bistable metal-organic frameworks, such as MIL-53. We present a multiscale physical mechanism of the dynamics of breathing transitions. We show that due to interplay between host framework elasticity and guest molecule adsorption, these transformations on the crystal level occur via layer-by-layer shear. We construct a simple Hamiltonian that describes the physics of host-host and host-guest interactions on the level of unit cells and reduces to …
Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit rich phase diagrams dominated by the interplay of superconductivity and charge density waves, which often result in anomalies in the electric transport properties. Here, we employ the ionic gating technique to realize a tunable, non-volatile organic ion intercalation in bulk single crystals of molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_{2}$). We demonstrate that this gate-driven organic ion intercalation induces a strong electron doping in the system without changing the pristine $2H$ crystal symmetry and triggers the emergence of a re-entrant insulator-to-metal trans…

The first-principles simulation of the electronic structure of organic semiconductors in solution poses a number of challenges that are not trivial to address simultaneously. In this work, we investigate the effects and the mutual interplay of solvation, alkylization, and doping on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of sexithiophene, a representative organic semiconductor molecule. To this end, we employ (time-dependent) density functional theory in conjunction with the polarizable-continuum model. We find that the torsion between adjacent monomer units plays a key role, as it …
We investigate the equilibrium geometry and electronic structure of Mo$_{12}$S$_{9}$I$_{9}$ nanowires using ab initio Density Functional calculations. The skeleton of these unusually stable nanowires consists of rigid, functionalized Mo octahedra, connected by flexible, bi-stable sulphur bridges. This structural flexibility translates into a capability to stretch up to approximate 20% at almost no energy cost. The nanowires change from conductors to narrow-gap magnetic semiconductors in one of their structural isomers.
The structural degrees of freedom of a material are the various distortions most straightforwardly activated by external stimuli. A highly successful design strategy in materials chemistry involves controlling these individual distortions to produce useful functional responses. In a ferroelectric such as lead titanate, for example, the key degree of freedom involves displacements of Pb$^{2+}$; by coupling these together, the system interacts with electric fields. An exciting development has been to exploit the interplay between different distortions: $e.g.$ generating polarisation by combining…

Characterizing the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties remains one of the major challenges for this novel technology. We analyze and overview several different unconventional quantum criticalities. One origin of the unconventionality is the proximity to first-order transitions. The border between the first-order and continuous transitions is described by a quantum tricritical point (QTCP) for symmetry-breaking transitions. One of the characteristic features is the concomitant divergence of order-parameter and uniform fluctuations in contrast to the conventional quantum critical point (QCP). Several puzzling non-Fermi-liquid properties are referred to be accounted for as in the cases of YbRh2Si2, CeRu2Si2 and …
The stability of organic solar cells is strongly affected by the morphology of the photoactive layers, whose separated crystalline and/or amorphous phases are kinetically quenched far from their thermodynamic equilibrium during the production process. The evolution of these structures during the lifetime of the cell remains poorly understood. In this paper, a phase-field simulation framework is proposed, handling liquid-liquid demixing and polycrystalline growth at the same time in order to investigate the evolution of crystalline immiscible binary systems. We find that initially, the nuclei t…
The formation of hydrogen-bonded organic nano-structures and the role of the substrate lattice thereby were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The self-organization of 5,10,15,20-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H2THPP) molecules leads to two molecular arrangements on Au(111). One of these is characterized by pair-wise hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl groups and a low packing density which enables a rotation of individual molecules in the structure. A different interaction with stronger chain-like hydrogen bonding and additional interactions of phenyl groups was observed for the s…
