We present a monolithic parallel Newton-multigrid solver for nonlinear three dimensional fluid-structure interactions in Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian formulation. We start with a finite element discretization of the coupled problem, based on a remapping of the Navier-Stokes equation onto a fixed reference framework. The strongly coupled fluid-structure interaction problem is discretized with finite elements in time and finite differences in time. The resulting nonlinear and linear systems of equations are large and show a very high condition number. We present a novel Newton approach that is based on two essential ideas: First, a static condensation of solid deformation by exploiting the velocity-deformation relation $d_t u = v$. Second, the Jacobian of the fluid-structure interaction system is simplified by neglecting all derivatives with respect to the ALE deformation, an approximation that has shown to have little impact. The resulting system of equation decouples into a joint momentum equation and into two separated equations for the deformation fields in solid and fluid. Besides a reduction of the problem sizes, the approximation has a positive effect on the conditioning of the systems such that multigrid solvers with simple smoothers like a parallel Vanka-iteration can be applied. We demonstrate the efficiency of the resulting solver infrastructure on a well-studied 2d test-case and we also introduce a challenging 3d problem. For 3d problems we achieve a substantial acceleration as compared to established approaches found in literature.
A multigrid framework is described for multiphysics applications. The framework allows one to construct, adapt, and tailor a monolithic multigrid methodology to different linear systems coming from discretized partial differential equations. The main idea centers on developing multigrid components in a blocked fashion where each block corresponds to separate sets of physical unknowns and equations within the larger discretization matrix. Once defined, these components are ultimately assembled into a monolithic multigrid solver for the entire system. We demonstrate the potential of the framewor…
We consider the widely used continuous $\mathcal{Q}_{k}$-$\mathcal{Q}_{k-1}$ quadrilateral or hexahedral Taylor-Hood elements for the finite element discretization of the Stokes and generalized Stokes systems in two and three spatial dimensions. For the fast solution of the corresponding symmetric, but indefinite system of finite element equations, we propose and analyze matrix-free monolithic geometric multigrid solvers that are based on appropriately scaled Chebyshev-Jacobi smoothers. The analysis is based on results by Schöberl and Zulehner (2003). We present and discuss several numerical r…
Most research on preconditioners for time-dependent PDEs has focused on implicit multi-step or diagonally-implicit multi-stage temporal discretizations. In this paper, we consider monolithic multigrid preconditioners for fully-implicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration methods. These temporal discretizations have very attractive accuracy and stability properties, but they couple the spatial degrees of freedom across multiple time levels, requiring the solution of very large linear systems. We extend the classical Vanka relaxation scheme to implicit RK discretizations of saddle poin…
Advanced finite-element discretizations and preconditioners for models of poroelasticity have attracted significant attention in recent years. The equations of poroelasticity offer significant challenges in both areas, due to the potentially strong coupling between unknowns in the system, saddle-point structure, and the need to account for wide ranges of parameter values, including limiting behavior such as incompressible elasticity. This paper was motivated by an attempt to develop monolithic multigrid preconditioners for the discretization developed in [48]; we show here why this is a diffic…
The magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations model a wide range of plasma physics applications and are characterized by a nonlinear system of partial differential equations that strongly couples a charged fluid with the evolution of electromagnetic fields. After discretization and linearization, the resulting system of equations is generally difficult to solve due to the coupling between variables, and the heterogeneous coefficients induced by the linearization process. In this paper, we investigate multigrid preconditioners for this system based on specialized relaxation schemes that properly add…
In recent years, solvers for finite-element discretizations of linear or linearized saddle-point problems, like the Stokes and Oseen equations, have become well established. There are two main classes of preconditioners for such systems: those based on block-factorization approach and those based on monolithic multigrid. Both classes of preconditioners have several critical choices to be made in their composition, such as the selection of a suitable relaxation scheme for monolithic multigrid. From existing studies, some insight can be gained as to what options are preferable in low-performance…
In this work, we propose a multigrid preconditioner for Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) methods. Our multigrid method does not require knowledge of the Jacobian at any level of the multigrid hierarchy. As it is common in standard multigrid methods, the proposed method also relies on three building blocks: transfer operators, smoothers, and a coarse level solver. In addition to the restriction and prolongation operator, we also use a projection operator to transfer the current Newton iterate to a coarser level. The three-level Chebyshev semi-iterative method is employed as a smoother, as it …
We present a novel monolithic divergence-conforming HDG scheme for a linear fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem with a thick structure. A pressure-robust optimal energy-norm estimate is obtained for the semidiscrete scheme. When combined with a Crank-Nicolson time discretization, our fully discrete scheme is energy stable and produces an exactly divergence-free fluid velocity approximation. The resulting linear system, which is symmetric and indefinite, is solved using a preconditioned MinRes method with a robust block algebraic multigrid (AMG) preconditioner.

The paper focuses on developing and studying efficient block preconditioners based on classical algebraic multigrid for the large-scale sparse linear systems arising from the fully coupled and implicitly cell-centered finite volume discretization of multi-group radiation diffusion equations, whose coefficient matrices can be rearranged into the $(G+2)\times(G+2)$ block form, where $G$ is the number of energy groups. The preconditioning techniques are based on the monolithic classical algebraic multigrid method, physical-variable based coarsening two-level algorithm and two types of block Schur…
A nonlinear multigrid solver for two-phase flow and transport in a mixed fractional-flow velocity-pressure-saturation formulation is proposed. The solver, which is under the framework of the full approximation scheme (FAS), extends our previous work on nonlinear multigrid for heterogeneous diffusion problems. The coarse spaces in the multigrid hierarchy are constructed by first aggregating degrees of freedom, and then solving some local flow problems. The mixed formulation and the choice of coarse spaces allow us to assemble the coarse problems without visiting finer levels during the solving …
We present a monolithic geometric multigrid preconditioner for solving fluid-solid interaction problems in Stokes limit. The problems are discretized by a spatially adaptive high-order meshless method, the generalized moving least squares (GMLS) with adaptive $h$-refinement. In Stokes limit, solid kinematics can be dominated by the singularities governing the lubrication effects. Resolving those singularities with adaptive $h$-refinement can lead to an ill-conditioned linear system of equations. For constructing the interpolation and restriction operators - the key ingredients of the multigrid…
We employ textbook multigrid efficiency (TME), as introduced by Achi Brandt, to construct an asymptotically optimal monolithic multigrid solver for the Stokes system. The geometric multigrid solver builds upon the concept of hierarchical hybrid grids (HHG), which is extended to higher-order finite-element discretizations, and a corresponding matrix-free implementation. The computational cost of the full multigrid (FMG) iteration is quantified, and the solver is applied to multiple benchmark problems. Through a parameter study, we suggest configurations that achieve TME for both, stabilized equ…
This work develops a nonlinear multigrid method for diffusion problems discretized by cell-centered finite volume methods on general unstructured grids. The multigrid hierarchy is constructed algebraically using aggregation of degrees of freedom and spectral decomposition of reference linear operators associated with the aggregates. For rapid convergence, it is important that the resulting coarse spaces have good approximation properties. In our approach, the approximation quality can be directly improved by including more spectral degrees of freedom in the coarsening process. Further, by expl…
Multigrid methods are popular solution algorithms for many discretized PDEs, either as standalone iterative solvers or as preconditioners, due to their high efficiency. However, the choice and optimization of multigrid components such as relaxation schemes and grid-transfer operators is crucial to the design of optimally efficient algorithms. It is well--known that local Fourier analysis (LFA) is a useful tool to predict and analyze the performance of these components. In this paper, we develop a local Fourier analysis of monolithic multigrid methods based on additive Vanka relaxation schemes …
We consider the time-dependent Stokes-Darcy problem as a model case for the challenges involved in solving coupled systems. Keeping the model, its discretization, and the underlying numerics for the subproblems in the free-flow domain and the porous medium constant, we focus on different solver approaches for the coupled problem. We compare a partitioned coupling approach using the coupling library preCICE with a monolithic block-preconditioned one that is tailored to different formulations of the problem. Both approaches enable the reuse of already available iterative solvers and precondition…
Numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, in particular in three space dimensions, continues to remain a challenging task. Space-time finite element methods feature the natural construction of higher order discretization schemes. They offer the potential to achieve accurate results on computationally feasible grids. Linearizing the resulting algebraic problems by Newton's method yields linear systems with block matrices built of $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ saddle point systems, where $k$ denotes the polynomial order of the variational time discretization. We demonstrate numerically the effi…

Fourth-order differential equations play an important role in many applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we present a three-field mixed finite-element formulation for fourth-order problems, with a focus on the effective treatment of the different boundary conditions that arise naturally in a variational formulation. Our formulation is based on introducing the gradient of the solution as an explicit variable, constrained using a Lagrange multiplier. The essential boundary conditions are enforced weakly, using Nitsche's method where required. As a result, the problem is rewritt…
One of the state-of-the-art strategies for predicting crack propagation, nucleation, and interaction is the phase-field approach. Despite its reliability and robustness, the phase-field approach suffers from burdensome computational cost, caused by the non-convexity of the underlying energy functional and a large number of unknowns required to resolve the damage gradients. In this work, we propose to solve such nonlinear systems in a monolithic manner using the Schwarz preconditioned inexact Newton's (SPIN) method. The proposed SPIN method leverages the field split approach and minimizes the e…
We investigate the potential of quasi-Newton methods in facilitating convergence of monolithic solution schemes for phase field fracture modelling. Several paradigmatic boundary value problems are addressed, spanning the fields of quasi-static fracture, fatigue damage and dynamic cracking. The finite element results obtained reveal the robustness of quasi-Newton monolithic schemes, with convergence readily attained under both stable and unstable cracking conditions. Moreover, since the solution method is unconditionally stable, very significant computational gains are observed relative to the …
