A recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is trained to predict sound samples based on audio input augmented by control parameter information for pitch, volume, and instrument identification. During the generative phase following training, audio input is taken from the output of the previous time step, and the parameters are externally controlled allowing the network to be played as a musical instrument. Building on an architecture developed in previous work, we focus on the learning and synthesis of transients - the temporal response of the network during the short time (tens of milliseconds) following the onset and offset of a control signal. We find that the network learns the particular transient characteristics of two different synthetic instruments, and furthermore shows some ability to interpolate between the characteristics of the instruments used in training in response to novel parameter settings. We also study the behaviour of the units in hidden layers of the RNN using various visualisation techniques and find a variety of volume-specific response characteristics.
Deep learning-based approaches to musical source separation are often limited to the instrument classes that the models are trained on and do not generalize to separate unseen instruments. To address this, we propose a few-shot musical source separation paradigm. We condition a generic U-Net source separation model using few audio examples of the target instrument. We train a few-shot conditioning encoder jointly with the U-Net to encode the audio examples into a conditioning vector to configure the U-Net via feature-wise linear modulation (FiLM). We evaluate the trained models on real musical…

A method for musical audio synthesis using autoencoding neural networks is proposed. The autoencoder is trained to compress and reconstruct magnitude short-time Fourier transform frames. The autoencoder produces a spectrogram by activating its smallest hidden layer, and a phase response is calculated using real-time phase gradient heap integration. Taking an inverse short-time Fourier transform produces the audio signal. Our algorithm is light-weight when compared to current state-of-the-art audio-producing machine learning algorithms. We outline our design process, produce metrics, and detail…
A Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for audio synthesis is trained by augmenting the audio input with information about signal characteristics such as pitch, amplitude, and instrument. The result after training is an audio synthesizer that is played like a musical instrument with the desired musical characteristics provided as continuous parametric control. The focus of this paper is on conditioning data-driven synthesis models with real-valued parameters, and in particular, on the ability of the system a) to generalize and b) to be responsive to parameter values and sequences not seen during tra…

Generative models have thrived in computer vision, enabling unprecedented image processes. Yet the results in audio remain less advanced. Our project targets real-time sound synthesis from a reduced set of high-level parameters, including semantic controls that can be adapted to different sound libraries and specific tags. These generative variables should allow expressive modulations of target musical qualities and continuously mix into new styles. To this extent we train AEs on an orchestral database of individual note samples, along with their intrinsic attributes: note class, timbre domain…
Deep generative models for symbolic music are typically designed to model temporal dependencies in music so as to predict the next musical event given previous events. In many cases, such models are expected to learn abstract concepts such as harmony, meter, and rhythm from raw musical data without any additional information. In this study, we investigate the effects of explicitly conditioning deep generative models with musically relevant information. Specifically, we study the effects of four different conditioning inputs on the performance of a recurrent monophonic melody generation model. …

Recent neural waveform synthesizers such as WaveNet, WaveGlow, and the neural-source-filter (NSF) model have shown good performance in speech synthesis despite their different methods of waveform generation. The similarity between speech and music audio synthesis techniques suggests interesting avenues to explore in terms of the best way to apply speech synthesizers in the music domain. This work compares three neural synthesizers used for musical instrument sounds generation under three scenarios: training from scratch on music data, zero-shot learning from the speech domain, and fine-tuning-…
Modeling real-world sound is a fundamental problem in the creative use of machine learning and many other fields, including human speech processing and bioacoustics. Transformer-based generative models and some prior work (e.g., DDSP) are known to produce realistic sound, although they have limited control and are hard to interpret. As an alternative, we aim to use modular synthesizers, i.e., compositional, parametric electronic musical instruments, for modeling non-music sounds. However, inferring synthesizer parameters given a target sound, i.e., the parameter inference task, is not trivial …

Synthetic creation of drum sounds (e.g., in drum machines) is commonly performed using analog or digital synthesis, allowing a musician to sculpt the desired timbre modifying various parameters. Typically, such parameters control low-level features of the sound and often have no musical meaning or perceptual correspondence. With the rise of Deep Learning, data-driven processing of audio emerges as an alternative to traditional signal processing. This new paradigm allows controlling the synthesis process through learned high-level features or by conditioning a model on musically relevant inform…
FM Synthesis is a well-known algorithm used to generate complex timbre from a compact set of design primitives. Typically featuring a MIDI interface, it is usually impractical to control it from an audio source. On the other hand, Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) has enabled nuanced audio rendering by Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that learn to control differentiable synthesis layers from arbitrary sound inputs. The training process involves a corpus of audio for supervision, and spectral reconstruction loss functions. Such functions, while being great to match spectral amplitudes…

Musical expression requires control of both what notes are played, and how they are performed. Conventional audio synthesizers provide detailed expressive controls, but at the cost of realism. Black-box neural audio synthesis and concatenative samplers can produce realistic audio, but have few mechanisms for control. In this work, we introduce MIDI-DDSP a hierarchical model of musical instruments that enables both realistic neural audio synthesis and detailed user control. Starting from interpretable Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) synthesis parameters, we infer musical notes a…

Synthesizer is a type of electronic musical instrument that is now widely used in modern music production and sound design. Each parameters configuration of a synthesizer produces a unique timbre and can be viewed as a unique instrument. The problem of estimating a set of parameters configuration that best restore a sound timbre is an important yet complicated problem, i.e.: the synthesizer parameters estimation problem. We proposed a multi-modal deep-learning-based pipeline Sound2Synth, together with a network structure Prime-Dilated Convolution (PDC) specially designed to solve this problem.…

The present paper describes a singing voice synthesis based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Singing voice synthesis systems based on deep neural networks (DNNs) are currently being proposed and are improving the naturalness of synthesized singing voices. In these systems, the relationship between musical score feature sequences and acoustic feature sequences extracted from singing voices is modeled by DNNs. Then, an acoustic feature sequence of an arbitrary musical score is output in units of frames by the trained DNNs, and a natural trajectory of a singing voice is obtained by using …
We propose GANStrument, a generative adversarial model for instrument sound synthesis. Given a one-shot sound as input, it is able to generate pitched instrument sounds that reflect the timbre of the input within an interactive time. By exploiting instance conditioning, GANStrument achieves better fidelity and diversity of synthesized sounds and generalization ability to various inputs. In addition, we introduce an adversarial training scheme for a pitch-invariant feature extractor that significantly improves the pitch accuracy and timbre consistency. Experimental results show that GANStrument…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have achieved excellent audio synthesis quality in the last years. However, making them operable with semantically meaningful controls remains an open challenge. An obvious approach is to control the GAN by conditioning it on metadata contained in audio datasets. Unfortunately, audio datasets often lack the desired annotations, especially in the musical domain. A way to circumvent this lack of annotations is to generate them, for example, with an automatic audio-tagging system. The output probabilities of such systems (so-called "soft labels") carry rich …

In this paper, we learn disentangled representations of timbre and pitch for musical instrument sounds. We adapt a framework based on variational autoencoders with Gaussian mixture latent distributions. Specifically, we use two separate encoders to learn distinct latent spaces for timbre and pitch, which form Gaussian mixture components representing instrument identity and pitch, respectively. For reconstruction, latent variables of timbre and pitch are sampled from corresponding mixture components, and are concatenated as the input to a decoder. We show the model efficacy by latent space visu…
This paper presents Sinsy, a deep neural network (DNN)-based singing voice synthesis (SVS) system. In recent years, DNNs have been utilized in statistical parametric SVS systems, and DNN-based SVS systems have demonstrated better performance than conventional hidden Markov model-based ones. SVS systems are required to synthesize a singing voice with pitch and timing that strictly follow a given musical score. Additionally, singing expressions that are not described on the musical score, such as vibrato and timing fluctuations, should be reproduced. The proposed system is composed of four modul…

This paper introduces a deep neural network model for subband-based speech synthesizer. The model benefits from the short bandwidth of the subband signals to reduce the complexity of the time-domain speech generator. We employed the multi-level wavelet analysis/synthesis to decompose/reconstruct the signal into subbands in time domain. Inspired from the WaveNet, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model predicts subband speech signals fully in time domain. Due to the short bandwidth of the subbands, a simple network architecture is enough to train the simple patterns of the subbands accuratel…

This paper presents a novel method for extracting the vocal track from a musical mixture. The musical mixture consists of a singing voice and a backing track which may comprise of various instruments. We use a convolutional network with skip and residual connections as well as dilated convolutions to estimate vocoder parameters, given the spectrogram of an input mixture. The estimated parameters are then used to synthesize the vocal track, without any interference from the backing track. We evaluate our system, through objective metrics pertinent to audio quality and interference from backgrou…

As singing voices represent a rich form of expression, a powerful technique to model them accurately is required. In the proposed technique, long-term dependencies of singing voices are modeled by CNNs. An acoustic feature sequence is generated for each segment that consists of long-term frames, and a natural trajectory is obtained with…
We present an end-to-end method for transforming audio from one style to another. For the case of speech, by conditioning on speaker identities, we can train a single model to transform words spoken by multiple people into multiple target voices. For the case of music, we can specify musical instruments and achieve the same result. Architecturally, our method is a fully-differentiable sequence-to-sequence model based on convolutional and hierarchical recurrent neural networks. It is designed to capture long-term acoustic dependencies, requires minimal post-processing, and produces realistic au…

This paper proposes a generative moment matching network (GMMN)-based post-filter that provides inter-utterance pitch variation for deep neural network (DNN)-based singing voice synthesis. The natural pitch variation of a human singing voice leads to a richer musical experience and is used in double-tracking, a recording method in which two performances of the same phrase are recorded and mixed to create a richer, layered sound. However, singing voices synthesized using conventional DNN-based methods never vary because the synthesis process is deterministic and only one waveform is synthesized…
Electronic music artists and sound designers have unique workflow practices that necessitate specialized approaches for developing music information retrieval and creativity support tools. Furthermore, electronic music instruments, such as modular synthesizers, have near-infinite possibilities for sound creation and can be combined to create unique and complex audio paths. The process of discovering interesting sounds is often serendipitous and impossible to replicate. For this reason, many musicians in electronic genres record audio output at all times while they work in the studio. Subsequen…
In this paper, we introduce a simple method that can separate arbitrary musical instruments from an audio mixture. Given an unaligned MIDI transcription for a target instrument from an input mixture, we synthesize new mixtures from the midi transcription that sound similar to the mixture to be separated. This lets us create a labeled training set to train a network on the specific bespoke task. When this model applied to the original mixture, we demonstrate that this method can: 1) successfully separate out the desired instrument with access to only unaligned MIDI, 2) separate arbitrary instru…
This paper proposes a controllable end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) system to control the speaking speed (speed-controllable TTS; SCTTS) of synthesized speech with sentence-level speaking-rate value as an additional input. The speaking-rate value, the ratio of the number of input phonemes to the length of input speech, is adopted in the proposed system to control the speaking speed. Furthermore, the proposed SCTTS system can control the speaking speed while retaining other speech attributes, such as the pitch, by adopting the global style token-based style encoder. The proposed SCTTS does not r…

We present in this paper PerformacnceNet, a neural network model we proposed recently to achieve score-to-audio music generation. The model learns to convert a music piece from the symbolic domain to the audio domain, assigning performance-level attributes such as changes in velocity automatically to the music and then synthesizing the audio. The model is therefore not just a neural audio synthesizer, but an AI performer that learns to interpret a musical score in its own way. The code and sample outputs of the model can be found online at https://github.com/bwang514/PerformanceNet.

Recent progress in deep learning for audio synthesis opens the way to models that directly produce the waveform, shifting away from the traditional paradigm of relying on vocoders or MIDI synthesizers for speech or music generation. Despite their successes, current state-of-the-art neural audio synthesizers such as WaveNet and SampleRNN suffer from prohibitive training and inference times because they are based on autoregressive models that generate audio samples one at a time at a rate of 16kHz. In this work, we study the more computationally efficient alternative of generating the waveform f…

State-of-the-art approaches for visually-guided audio source separation typically assume sources that have characteristic sounds, such as musical instruments. These approaches often ignore the visual context of these sound sources or avoid modeling object interactions that may be useful to better characterize the sources, especially when the same object class may produce varied sounds from distinct interactions. To address this challenging problem, we propose Audio Visual Scene Graph Segmenter (AVSGS), a novel deep learning model that embeds the visual structure of the scene as a graph and seg…
