A new framework is presented for generating musical audio using autoencoder neural networks. With the presented framework, called network modulation synthesis, users can create synthesis architectures and use novel generative algorithms to more easily move through the complex latent parameter space of an autoencoder model to create audio.
Implementations of the new algorithms are provided for the open-source CANNe synthesizer network, and can be applied to other autoencoder networks for audio synthesis. Spectrograms and time-series encoding analysis demonstrate that the new algorithms provide simple mechanisms for users to generate time-varying parameter combinations, and therefore auditory possibilities, that are difficult to create by generating audio from handcrafted encodings.
Many previous audio-visual voice-related works focus on speech, ignoring the singing voice in the growing number of musical video streams on the Internet. For processing diverse musical video data, voice activity detection is a necessary step. This paper attempts to detect the speech and singing voices of target performers in musical video streams using audiovisual information. To integrate information of audio and visual modalities, a multi-branch network is proposed to learn audio and image representations, and the representations are fused by attention based on semantic similarity to shape …

Lossy audio codecs compress (and decompress) digital audio streams by removing information that tends to be inaudible in human perception. Under high compression rates, such codecs may introduce a variety of impairments in the audio signal. Many works have tackled the problem of audio enhancement and compression artifact removal using deep learning techniques. However, only a few works tackle the restoration of heavily compressed audio signals in the musical domain. In such a scenario, there is no unique solution for the restoration of the original signal. Therefore, in this study, we test a s…

In this paper, we present TIV.lib, an open-source library for the content-based tonal description of musical audio signals. Its main novelty relies on the perceptually-inspired Tonal Interval Vector space based on the Discrete Fourier transform, from which multiple instantaneous and global representations, descriptors and metrics are computed - e.g., harmonic change, dissonance, diatonicity, and musical key. The library is cross-platform, implemented in Python and the graphical programming language Pure Data, and can be used in both online and offline scenarios. Of note is its potential for en…
In the stereo-to-multichannel upmixing problem for music, one of the main tasks is to set the directionality of the instrument sources in the multichannel rendering results. In this paper, we propose a modified variational autoencoder model that learns a latent space to describe the spatial images in multichannel music. We seek to disentangle the spatial images and music content, so the learned latent variables are invariant to the music. At test time, we use the latent variables to control the panning of sources. We propose two upmixing use cases: transferring the spatial images from one song…
In this work we describe and evaluate methods to learn musical embeddings. Each embedding is a vector that represents four contiguous beats of music and is derived from a symbolic representation. We consider autoencoding-based methods including denoising autoencoders, and context reconstruction, and evaluate the resulting embeddings on a forward prediction and a classification task.

A method for musical audio synthesis using autoencoding neural networks is proposed. The autoencoder is trained to compress and reconstruct magnitude short-time Fourier transform frames. The autoencoder produces a spectrogram by activating its smallest hidden layer, and a phase response is calculated using real-time phase gradient heap integration. Taking an inverse short-time Fourier transform produces the audio signal. Our algorithm is light-weight when compared to current state-of-the-art audio-producing machine learning algorithms. We outline our design process, produce metrics, and detail…

Detecting anchor's voice in live musical streams is an important preprocessing for music and speech signal processing. Existing approaches to voice activity detection (VAD) primarily rely on audio, however, audio-based VAD is difficult to effectively focus on the target voice in noisy environments. With the help of visual information, this paper proposes a rule-embedded network to fuse the audio-visual (A-V) inputs to help the model better detect target voice. The core role of the rule in the model is to coordinate the relation between the bi-modal information and use visual representations as…

Loops, seamlessly repeatable musical segments, are a cornerstone of modern music production. Contemporary artists often mix and match various sampled or pre-recorded loops based on musical criteria such as rhythm, harmony and timbral texture to create compositions. Taking such criteria into account, we present LoopNet, a feed-forward generative model for creating loops conditioned on intuitive parameters. We leverage Music Information Retrieval (MIR) models as well as a large collection of public loop samples in our study and use the Wave-U-Net architecture to map control parameters to audio. …
In this article, we aim to provide a review of the key ideas and approaches proposed in 20 years of scientific literature around musical version identification (VI) research and connect them to current practice. For more than a decade, VI systems suffered from the accuracy-scalability trade-off, with attempts to increase accuracy that typically resulted in cumbersome, non-scalable systems. Recent years, however, have witnessed the rise of deep learning-based approaches that take a step toward bridging the accuracy-scalability gap, yielding systems that can realistically be deployed in industri…
We present an automatic piano transcription system that converts polyphonic audio recordings into musical scores. This has been a long-standing problem of music information processing, and recent studies have made remarkable progress in the two main component techniques: multipitch detection and rhythm quantization. Given this situation, we study a method integrating deep-neural-network-based multipitch detection and statistical-model-based rhythm quantization. In the first part, we conducted systematic evaluations and found that while the present method achieved high transcription accuracies …
Real-time tracking of the position of a musical performance on a musical score, i.e. score following, can be useful in music practice, performance and production. Example applications of such technology include computer-aided accompaniment and automatic page turning. Score following is a challenging task, especially when considering deviations in performance data from the score stemming from mistakes or expressive choices. In this project, the extensive research present in the field is first explored before two open-source evaluation testbenches for score following--one quantitative and the ot…

As digital music production has become mainstream, the selection of appropriate virtual instruments plays a crucial role in determining the quality of music. To search the musical instrument samples or virtual instruments that make one's desired sound, music producers use their ears to listen and compare each instrument sample in their collection, which is time-consuming and inefficient. In this paper, we call this task as Musical Instrument Retrieval and propose a method for retrieving desired musical instruments using reference music mixture as a query. The proposed model consists of the Sin…

Audio processing methods operating on a time-frequency representation of the signal can introduce unpleasant sounding artifacts known as musical noise. These artifacts are observed in the context of audio coding, speech enhancement, and source separation. The change in kurtosis of the power spectrum introduced during the processing was shown to correlate with the human perception of musical noise in the context of speech enhancement, leading to the proposal of measures based on it. These baseline measures are here shown to correlate with human perception only in a limited manner. As ground tru…

Musical expression requires control of both what notes are played, and how they are performed. Conventional audio synthesizers provide detailed expressive controls, but at the cost of realism. Black-box neural audio synthesis and concatenative samplers can produce realistic audio, but have few mechanisms for control. In this work, we introduce MIDI-DDSP a hierarchical model of musical instruments that enables both realistic neural audio synthesis and detailed user control. Starting from interpretable Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) synthesis parameters, we infer musical notes a…
The three packages libACA, pyACA, and ACA-Code provide reference implementations for basic approaches and algorithms for the analysis of musical audio signals in three different languages: C++, Python, and Matlab. All three packages cover the same algorithms, such as extraction of low level audio features, fundamental frequency estimation, as well as simple approaches to chord recognition, musical key detection, and onset detection. In addition, it implementations of more generic algorithms useful in audio content analysis such as dynamic time warping and the Viterbi algorithm are provided. Th…
Even though they differ in the physical domain, digital video and audio share many characteristics. Both are temporal data streams often stored in buffers with 8-bit values. This paper investigates a method for creating harmonic sounds with a video signal as input. A musical instrument is proposed, that utilizes video in both a sound synthesis method, and in a controller interface for selecting musical notes at specific velocities. The resulting instrument was informally determined by the author to sound both pleasant and interesting, but hard to control, and therefore suited for synth pad sou…
We consider the problem of learning high-level controls over the global structure of generated sequences, particularly in the context of symbolic music generation with complex language models. In this work, we present the Transformer autoencoder, which aggregates encodings of the input data across time to obtain a global representation of style from a given performance. We show it is possible to combine this global representation with other temporally distributed embeddings, enabling improved control over the separate aspects of performance style and melody. Empirically, we demonstrate the eff…

Generative models in vision have seen rapid progress due to algorithmic improvements and the availability of high-quality image datasets. In this paper, we offer contributions in both these areas to enable similar progress in audio modeling. First, we detail a powerful new WaveNet-style autoencoder model that conditions an autoregressive decoder on temporal codes learned from the raw audio waveform. Second, we introduce NSynth, a large-scale and high-quality dataset of musical notes that is an order of magnitude larger than comparable public datasets. Using NSynth, we demonstrate improved qual…

We have built a music similarity search engine that lets video producers search by listenable music excerpts, as a complement to traditional full-text search. Our system suggests similar sounding track segments in a large music catalog by training a self-supervised convolutional neural network with triplet loss terms and musical transformations. Semi-structured user interviews demonstrate that we can successfully impress professional video producers with the quality of the search experience, and perceived similarities to query tracks averaged 7.8/10 in user testing. We believe this search tool…

In this work, we create artistic closed loop curves that trace out images and 3D shapes, which we then hide in musical audio as a form of steganography. We use traveling salesperson art to create artistic plane loops to trace out image contours, and we use Hamiltonian cycles on triangle meshes to create artistic space loops that fill out 3D surfaces. Our embedding scheme is designed to faithfully preserve the geometry of these loops after lossy compression, while keeping their presence undetectable to the audio listener. To accomplish this, we hide each dimension of the curve in a different fr…
We present SingSong, a system that generates instrumental music to accompany input vocals, potentially offering musicians and non-musicians alike an intuitive new way to create music featuring their own voice. To accomplish this, we build on recent developments in musical source separation and audio generation. Specifically, we apply a state-of-the-art source separation algorithm to a large corpus of music audio to produce aligned pairs of vocals and instrumental sources. Then, we adapt AudioLM (Borsos et al., 2022) -- a state-of-the-art approach for unconditional audio generation -- to be sui…

Music is usually highly structured and it is still an open question how to design models which can successfully learn to recognize and represent musical structure. A fundamental problem is that structurally related patterns can have very distinct appearances, because the structural relationships are often based on transformations of musical material, like chromatic or diatonic transposition, inversion, retrograde, or rhythm change. In this preliminary work, we study the potential of two unsupervised learning techniques - Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) and Gated Autoencoders (GAEs) - to c…

In this paper, we learn disentangled representations of timbre and pitch for musical instrument sounds. We adapt a framework based on variational autoencoders with Gaussian mixture latent distributions. Specifically, we use two separate encoders to learn distinct latent spaces for timbre and pitch, which form Gaussian mixture components representing instrument identity and pitch, respectively. For reconstruction, latent variables of timbre and pitch are sampled from corresponding mixture components, and are concatenated as the input to a decoder. We show the model efficacy by latent space visu…

In order to solve the problem of poor performance of current musical instrument classification models, we propose a musical instrument classification algorithm based on multi-channel feature fusion and XGBoost. Based on audio feature extraction and fusion of the dataset, the features are input into the XGBoost model for training; secondly, we verified the superior performance of the algorithm in the musical instrument classification task by com-paring different feature combinations and several classic…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have achieved excellent audio synthesis quality in the last years. However, making them operable with semantically meaningful controls remains an open challenge. An obvious approach is to control the GAN by conditioning it on metadata contained in audio datasets. Unfortunately, audio datasets often lack the desired annotations, especially in the musical domain. A way to circumvent this lack of annotations is to generate them, for example, with an automatic audio-tagging system. The output probabilities of such systems (so-called "soft labels") carry rich …
Sound modelling is the process of developing algorithms that generate sound under parametric control. There are a few distinct approaches that have been developed historically including modelling the physics of sound production and propagation, assembling signal generating and processing elements to capture acoustic features, and manipulating collections of recorded audio samples. While each of these approaches has been able to achieve high-quality synthesis and interaction for specific applications, they are all labour-intensive and each comes with its own challenges for designing arbitrary c…

FM Synthesis is a well-known algorithm used to generate complex timbre from a compact set of design primitives. Typically featuring a MIDI interface, it is usually impractical to control it from an audio source. On the other hand, Differentiable Digital Signal Processing (DDSP) has enabled nuanced audio rendering by Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) that learn to control differentiable synthesis layers from arbitrary sound inputs. The training process involves a corpus of audio for supervision, and spectral reconstruction loss functions. Such functions, while being great to match spectral amplitudes…
