Because all neutron stars share a common equation of state, tidal deformability constraints from the compact binary coalescence GW170817 have implications for the properties of neutron stars in other systems. Using equation-of-state insensitive relations between macroscopic observables like moment of inertia ($I$), tidal deformability ($Λ$) and stellar compactness, we derive constraints on these properties as a function of neutron-star mass based on the LIGO-Virgo collaboration's canonical deformability measurement, $Λ_{1.4} = 190^{+390}_{-120}$. Specific estimates of $Λ$, $I$, dimensionless spin $χ$, and stellar radius $R$ for a few systems targeted by radio or X-ray studies are extracted from the general constraints. We also infer the canonical neutron-star radius as $R_{1.4} = 10.9^{+1.9}_{-1.5}$ km at 90$\%$ confidence. We further demonstrate how a gravitational-wave measurement of $Λ_{1.4}$ can be combined with independent measurements of neutron-star radii to tighten constraints on the tidal deformability as a proxy for the equation of state. We find that GW170817 and existing observations of six thermonuclear bursters in low-mass X-ray binaries jointly imply $Λ_{1.4} = 196^{+92}_{-63}$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level.
We show that the maximum and the minimum mass of merging neutron stars can be estimated with upcoming gravitational wave observations. We simulate populations of binary neutron star signals and model their mass distribution including upper and lower cutoffs. The lower(upper) limit can be measured to $\sim 0.2(0.1)\text{M}_{\odot}$ with $50$ detections if the mass distribution supports neutron stars with masses close to the cutoffs. The upper mass limit informs about the high density properties of the neutron star equation of state, while the lower limit signals the divide between neutron stars…
The properties of neutron star matter above nuclear density are not precisely known. Gravitational waves emitted from binary neutron stars during their late stages of inspiral and merger contain imprints of the neutron-star equation of state. Measuring departures from the point-particle limit of the late inspiral waveform allows one to measure properties of the equation of state via gravitational wave observations. This and a companion talk by J. S. Read reports a comparison of numerical waveforms from simulations of inspiraling neutron-star binaries, computed for equations of state with varyi…
Observations of the properties of multiple coalescing neutron stars will simultaneously provide insight into neutron star mass and spin distribution, the neutron star merger rate, and the nuclear equation of state. Not all merging binaries containing neutron stars are expected to be identical. Plausible sources of diversity in these coalescing binaries can arise from a broad or multi-peaked NS mass distribution; the effect of different and extreme NS natal spins; the possibility of NS-BH mergers; or even the possibility of phase transitions, allowing for NS with similar mass but strongly diver…
We present a robust method to characterize the gravitational wave emission from the remnant of a neutron star coalescence. Our approach makes only minimal assumptions about the morphology of the signal and provides a full posterior probability distribution of the underlying waveform. We apply our method on simulated data from a network of advanced ground-based detectors and demonstrate the gravitational wave signal reconstruction. We study the reconstruction quality for different binary configurations and equations of state for the colliding neutron stars. We show how our method can be used to…
The recent LIGO-Virgo detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral event GW170817 and the discovery of its accompanying electromagnetic signals mark a new era for multimessenger astronomy. In the coming years, advanced gravitational-wave detectors are likely to detect tens to hundreds of similar events. Neutron stars in binaries can possess significant spin, which is imprinted on the gravitational waveform via the effective spin parameter $χ_\text{eff}$. We explore the astrophysical inferences made possible by gravitational-wave measurements of $χ_\text{eff}$. First, us…
Detection of continuous gravitational waves from rapidly-spinning neutron stars opens up the possibility of examining their internal physics. We develop a framework that leverages a future continuous gravitational wave detection to infer a neutron star's moment of inertia, equatorial ellipticity, and the component of the magnetic dipole moment perpendicular to its rotation axis. We assume that the neutron star loses rotational kinetic energy through both gravitational wave and electromagnetic radiation, and that the distance to the neutron star can be measured, but do not assume electromagneti…
Gravitational-wave (GW) detections of merging neutron star-black hole (NSBH) systems probe astrophysical neutron star (NS) and black hole (BH) mass distributions, especially at the transition between NS and BH masses. Of particular interest are the maximum NS mass, minimum BH mass, and potential mass gap between them. While previous GW population analyses assumed all NSs obey the same maximum mass, if rapidly spinning NSs exist, they can extend to larger maximum masses than nonspinning NSs. In fact, several authors have proposed that the $\sim2.6\,M_\odot$ object in the event GW190814 -- eithe…
The gravitational-wave GW170817 is associated to the inspiral phase of a binary neutron star coalescence event. The LIGO-Virgo detectors sensitivity at high frequencies was not sufficient to detect the signal corresponding to the merger and post-merger phases. Hence, the question whether the merger outcome was a prompt black hole formation or not must be answered using either the pre-merger gravitational wave signal or electromagnetic counterparts. In this work we present two methods to infer the probability of prompt black hole formation, using the analysis of the inspiral gravitational-wave …

We propose here a robust scheme to infer the physical parameters of compact stars from their f-mode gravitational wave signals. We first show that the frequency and the damping rate of f-mode oscillation of compact stars can be expressed in terms of universal functions of stellar mass and moment of inertia. By employing the universality in the f-mode one can then infer accurate values of the mass, the moment of inertia and the radius of a compact star. In addition, we demonstrate that our new scheme works well for both realistic neutron stars and quark stars, and hence provides a unifying way …

Over the last few years, the detection of gravitational waves from binary neutron star systems has rekindled our hopes for a deeper understanding of the unknown nature of ultradense matter. In particular, gravitational wave constraints on the tidal deformability of a neutron star can be translated into constraints on several neutron star properties using a set of universal relations. Apart from binary neutron star mergers, supernova explosions are also important candidates for the detection of multimessenger signals. Such observations may allow us to impose significant constraints on the bindi…
We develop a method for implementing a proposal on utilizing knowledge of neutron star (NS) equation of state (EoS) for inferring the Hubble constant from a population of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. This method is useful in exploiting BNSs as standard sirens when their redshifts are not available. Gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact object binaries provide a direct measurement of their luminosity distances, but not their redshifts. Unlike in the past, here we employ a realistic EoS parametrization in a Bayesian framework to simultaneously measure the Hubble constant and refine …
In the last few decades, lots of universal relations between different global physical quantities of neutron stars have been proposed to constrain the unobservable or hard to be observed properties of neutron stars. But few of them are related to the gravitational redshift or the gravitational binding energy, especially for the fast rotating neutron stars. Here we will focus on the universal relations related to these two quantities. Based on 11 equations of state (EOSs) from the predictions of microscopic nuclear many-body theories for normal or hybrid neutron stars, we proposed a set of new …
Universal relations independently of the equation of state (EOS) for neutron star matter are valuable, if they exist, for extracting the neutron star properties, which generally depend on the EOS. In this study, we newly derive the universal relations predicting the gravitational wave frequencies for the fundamental ($f$), the 1st pressure ($p_1$), and the 1st spacetime ($w_1$) modes and the damping rate for the $f$- and $w_1$-modes as a function of the dimensionless tidal deformability. In particular, with the universal relations for the $f$-modes one can predict the frequencies and damping r…
We present a novel universal relation for binary neutron star mergers with long-lived neutron star remnants: inspired by recent work based on numerical relativity simulations, we propose a novel approach using perturbative calculations that allow us to relate the pre-merger neutron star binary tidal deformability to the effective compactness of the post-merger remnant. Our results allow for the prediction of the stellar parameters of a long-lived remnant neutron star from the study of gravitational waves emitted during the pre-merger phase.
Recently it was shown that slowly rotating neutron stars exhibit an interesting correlation between their moment of inertia $I$, their quadrupole moment $Q$, and their tidal deformation Love number $λ$ (the I-Love-Q relations), independently of the equation of state of the compact object. In the present work a similar, more general, universality is shown to hold true for all rotating neutron stars within General Relativity; the first four multipole moments of the neutron star are related in a way independent of the nuclear matter equation of state we assume. By exploiting this relation, we can…
The lowest neutron star masses currently measured are in the range $1.0-1.1~M_\odot$, but these measurement have either large uncertainties or refer to isolated neutron stars. The recent claim of a precisely measured mass $M/M_{\odot} = 1.174 \pm 0.004$ by Martinez et al [Astrophys. J. 812, 143 (2015)] in a double neutron star system suggests that low-mass neutron stars may be an interesting target for gravitational-wave detectors. Furthermore, Sotani et al [PTEP 2014, 051E01 (2014)] recently found empirical formulas relating the mass and surface redshift of nonrotating neutron stars to the st…
No-hair like relations between the multipole moments of the exterior gravitational field of neutron stars have recently been found to be approximately independent of the star's internal structure. This approximate, equation-of-state universality arises after one adimensionalizes the multipole moments appropriately, which then begs the question of whether there are better ways to adimensionalize the moments to obtain stronger universality. We here investigate this question in detail by considering slowly-rotating neutron stars both in the non-relativistic limit and in full General Relativity. W…
The post-merger gravitational wave (GW) emission from a binary neutron star merger is expected to provide exciting new constraints on the dense-matter equation of state (EoS). Such constraints rely, by and large, on the existence of quasi-universal relations, which relate the peak frequencies of the post-merger GW spectrum to properties of the neutron star structure in a model-independent way. In this work, we report on violations of existing quasi-universal relations between the peak spectral frequency, f_2, and the stellar radius, for EoSs models with backwards-bending slopes in their mass-r…
Recent studies of the analytical and numerical models of neutron stars suggest that their exterior field can be described by only four arbitrary parameters of the 2-soliton solution of Einstein's equations. Assuming that this is the case, we show that there exists an infinite hierarchy of the universal relations for neutron stars in terms of multipole moments that arises as a series of the degeneration conditions for generic soliton solutions. Our analysis of the simplest of these relations shows that the no-hair conjecture for neutron stars proposed by Yagi {\it et al.} fails to be verified b…
State-of-the-art numerical simulations of core-collapse supernovae reveal that the main source of gravitational waves is the excitation of proto-neutron star modes during post-bounce evolution. In this work we derive universal relations that relate the frequencies of the most common oscillation modes observed, i.e. g-modes, p-modes and the f-mode, with fundamental properties of the system, such as the surface gravity of the proto-neutron star or the mean density in the region enclosed by the shock. These relations are independent of the equation of state, the neutrino treatment, and the progen…
Inference of the equation-of-state (EoS) of dense nuclear matter in neutron-star cores is a principal science goal of X-ray and gravitational-wave observations of neutron stars. In particular, gravitational-wave observations provide an independent probe of the properties of bulk matter in neutron star cores that can then be used to compare with theoretically derived equations of state. In this paper, we quantify the systematic errors arising from the application of EoS-independent \emph{quasi-universal relations} in the estimation of neutron star tidal deformabilities and radii from gravitatio…
Inferring the properties of dense matter is one of the most exciting prospects from the measurement of gravitational waves from neutron star mergers. However, it will require reliable numerical simulations that incorporate viscous dissipation and energy transport if these can play a significant role within the survival time of the post-merger object. We calculate timescales for typical forms of dissipation and find that thermal transport and shear viscosity will not be important unless neutrino trapping occurs, which requires temperatures above about 10 MeV and gradients over lengthscales of 0…
We are investigating universal relations between different normalisations of the moment of inertia and the compactness of neutron stars in slow rotation approximation. We study the relations in particular class of massive scalar-sensor theories with self-interaction, for which significant deviations from General Relativity are allowed for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. Moment of inertia-compactness relations are examined for different normalisation of the moment of inertia. It is shown that for all studied cases the deviations from EOS universality are sm…
We study the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle around rapidly rotating neutron stars. Based on 12 different nuclear-matter equations of state (EOS), we find numerically two approximately EOS-insensitive universal relations that connect the radius and orbital frequency of the ISCO to the spin frequency $f$ and mass $M$ of rotating neutron stars. The relations are EOS-insensitive to about the 2% level for a large range of $Mf$. We also find that the universal relation for the ISCO radius agrees with the corresponding relation for the Kerr black hole to within 6% up to $Mf…

Due to our ignorance of the equation of state (EOS) beyond nuclear density, there is still no unique theoretical model for neutron stars (NSs). It is therefore surprising that universal EOS-independent relations connecting different physical quantities of neutron stars can exist. Lau et al. [ApJ, 714, 1234 (2010)] found that the frequency of the $f$-mode oscillation, the mass, and the moment of inertia are connected by universal relations. More recently, Yagi and Yunes [Science, 341, 365 (2013)] discovered the I-Love-Q universal relations among the mass, the moment of inertia, the Love number,…
In the modern era of abundant X-ray detections and the increasing momentum of gravitational waves astronomy, tests of General Relativity in strong field regime become increasingly feasible and their importance for probing gravity cannot be understated. To this end, we study the characteristics of slowly rotating topological neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity following the static study of this new type of compact objects by two of the authors. We explore the moment of inertia and verify that universal relations known from General Relativity hold for this new class of c…
Neutron stars exhibit a set of universal relations independent of their equation of state that bears semblance to the black hole no hair relations. Motivated by this, we analytically and numerically explore other relations that connect neutron star and black hole universality. By analyzing two different measures, we find that certain rescaled entropies possess a nearly universal behavior. We also discover that when the compactness of neutron stars approaches the black hole limit, the rescaled entropy approaches that of a black hole, and the thermodynamic entropy scales with the stellar surface…
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …
Neutron stars are ideal astrophysical sources to probe general relativity due to their large compactnesses and strong gravitational fields. For example, binary pulsar and gravitational wave observations have placed stringent bounds on certain scalar-tensor theories in which a massless scalar field is coupled to the metric through matter. A remarkable phenomenon of neutron stars in such scalar-tensor theories is spontaneous scalarization, where a normalized scalar charge remains order unity even if the matter-scalar coupling vanishes asymptotically far from the neutron star. While most works on…
The universality observed in gravitational wave spectra of non-rotating neutron stars is analyzed here. We show that the universality in the axial oscillation mode can be reproduced with a simple stellar model, namely the centrifugal barrier approximation (CBA), which captures the essence of the Tolman VII model of compact stars. Through the establishment of scaled co-ordinate logarithmic perturbation theory (SCLPT), we are able to explain and quantitatively predict such universal behavior. In addition, quasi-normal modes of individual neutron stars characterized by different equations of stat…
Rotation causes an increase in a neutron star's mass and equatorial radius. The mass and radius depend sensitively on the unknown equation of state (EOS) of cold, dense matter. However, the increases in mass and radius due to rotation are almost independent of the EOS. The EOS independence leads to the idea of neutron star universality. In this paper, we compute sequences of rotating neutron stars with constant central density. We use a collection of randomly generated EOS to construct simple correction factors to the mass and radius computed from the equations of hydrostatic equilibrium for n…
Neutron stars and quark stars are ideal laboratories to study fundamental physics at supra nuclear densities and strong gravitational fields. Astrophysical observables, however, depend strongly on the star's internal structure, which is currently unknown due to uncertainties in the equation of state. Universal relations, however, exist among certain stellar observables that do not depend sensitively on the star's internal structure. One such set of relations is between the star's moment of inertia ($I$), its tidal Love number (Love) and its quadrupole moment ($Q$), the so-called I-Love-Q relat…
Combining the GW observations of merging systems of binary neutron stars and quasi-universal relations, we set constraints on the maximum mass that can be attained by nonrotating stellar models of neutron stars. More specifically, exploiting the recent observation of the GW event GW 170817 and drawing from basic arguments on kilonova modeling of GRB 170817A, together with the quasi-universal relation between the maximum mass of nonrotating stellar models $M_{\rm TOV}$ and the maximum mass supported through uniform rotation $M_{\rm max}=\left(1.20^{+0.02}_{-0.05}\right) M_{\rm TOV}$ we set limi…
Neutron stars are known to host extremely powerful magnetic fields. Among other effects, one of the consequences of harbouring such fields is the deformation of the neutron star structure, leading, together with rotation, to the emission of continuous gravitational waves. On the one hand, the details of their internal magnetic fields are mostly unknown. Likewise, their internal structure, encoded by the equation of state, is highly uncertain. Here we present a study of axisymmetric models of isolated magnetised neutron stars, for various realistic equations of state considered viable by observ…
Equation of state (EOS) insensitive relations, so-called universal relations, between the neutron star (NS) compactness, its multipolar tidal deformability coefficients, and between the tidal parameters for binary systems are essential to break degeneracies in gravitational wave data analysis. Here, we validate and recalibrate these universal relations using a large set of almost 2 million phenomenological EOSs that are consistent with current observations. In doing so, we extend universal relations to a larger region of the EOS parameter space, most notably to softer EOSs and larger compactne…
Neutron stars harbour extremely powerful magnetic fields, leading to their shape being deformed. Their magnetic deformation depends both on the geometry - and strength - of their internal magnetic field and on their composition, encoded by the equation of state. However, both the details of the internal magnetic structure and the equation of state of the innermost part of neutron stars are mostly unkown. We performed a study of numerical models of magnetised, static, axisymmetric neutron stars in general relativity and in one of its most promising extensions, scalar-tensor theories. We did so …
