We show that the maximum and the minimum mass of merging neutron stars can be estimated with upcoming gravitational wave observations. We simulate populations of binary neutron star signals and model their mass distribution including upper and lower cutoffs. The lower(upper) limit can be measured to $\sim 0.2(0.1)\text{M}_{\odot}$ with $50$ detections if the mass distribution supports neutron stars with masses close to the cutoffs. The upper mass limit informs about the high density properties of the neutron star equation of state, while the lower limit signals the divide between neutron stars and white dwarfs.
Observations of the properties of multiple coalescing neutron stars will simultaneously provide insight into neutron star mass and spin distribution, the neutron star merger rate, and the nuclear equation of state. Not all merging binaries containing neutron stars are expected to be identical. Plausible sources of diversity in these coalescing binaries can arise from a broad or multi-peaked NS mass distribution; the effect of different and extreme NS natal spins; the possibility of NS-BH mergers; or even the possibility of phase transitions, allowing for NS with similar mass but strongly diver…
We develop a method for implementing a proposal on utilizing knowledge of neutron star (NS) equation of state (EoS) for inferring the Hubble constant from a population of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. This method is useful in exploiting BNSs as standard sirens when their redshifts are not available. Gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact object binaries provide a direct measurement of their luminosity distances, but not their redshifts. Unlike in the past, here we employ a realistic EoS parametrization in a Bayesian framework to simultaneously measure the Hubble constant and refine …
The recent LIGO-Virgo detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral event GW170817 and the discovery of its accompanying electromagnetic signals mark a new era for multimessenger astronomy. In the coming years, advanced gravitational-wave detectors are likely to detect tens to hundreds of similar events. Neutron stars in binaries can possess significant spin, which is imprinted on the gravitational waveform via the effective spin parameter $χ_\text{eff}$. We explore the astrophysical inferences made possible by gravitational-wave measurements of $χ_\text{eff}$. First, us…
Gravitational-wave (GW) detections of merging neutron star-black hole (NSBH) systems probe astrophysical neutron star (NS) and black hole (BH) mass distributions, especially at the transition between NS and BH masses. Of particular interest are the maximum NS mass, minimum BH mass, and potential mass gap between them. While previous GW population analyses assumed all NSs obey the same maximum mass, if rapidly spinning NSs exist, they can extend to larger maximum masses than nonspinning NSs. In fact, several authors have proposed that the $\sim2.6\,M_\odot$ object in the event GW190814 -- eithe…
A detection of a core-collapse supernova signal with an Advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detector network will allow us to measure astrophysical parameters of the source. In real advanced gravitational-wave detector data there are transient noise artifacts that may mimic a true gravitational-wave signal. In this paper, we outline a procedure implemented in the Supernova Model Evidence Extractor (SMEE) that determines if a core-collapse supernova signal candidate is a noise artefact, a rapidly-rotating core-collapse supernova signal, or a neutrino explosion mechanism core-collapse sup…
Population (Pop) III stars, first stars, or metal-free stars are made of primordial gas. We have examined if they can be dominant origins of merging binary black holes (BHs) and extremely metal-poor stars. The abundance pattern of EMP stars is helpful to trace back the properties of Pop III stars. We have confirmed previous arguments that the observed BH merger rate needs Pop III star formation efficiency 10 times larger than theoretically predicted values, while the cosmic reionization history still permits such a high Pop III star formation efficiency. On the other hand, we have newly found …
Time-resolved spectra of six short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs), measured by the {\em Swift} telescope, are used to estimate the parameters of a plerion-like model of the X-ray afterglow. The unshrouded, optically thin component of the afterglow is modelled as emanating from an expanding bubble of relativistic, shock-accelerated electrons fuelled by a central object. The electrons are injected with a power-law distribution and cool mainly by synchrotron losses. We compute posteriors for model parameters describing the central engine (e.g. spin frequency at birth, magnetic field strength) and shock…
Connecting observations of core-collapse supernova explosions to the properties of their massive star progenitors is a long-sought, and challenging, goal of supernova science. Recently, Barker et al. (2022) presented bolometric light curves for a landscape of progenitors from spherically symmetric neutrino-driven core-collapse supernova (CCSN) simulations using an effective model. They find a tight relationship between the plateau luminosity of the Type II-P CCSN light curve and the terminal iron core mass of the progenitor. Remarkably, this allows us to constrain progenitor properties with ph…
Using 72 Short Gamma Ray Bursts (SGRBs) with well determined spectral data observed by BATSE, we determine their redshift and the luminosity by applying $E_p$--$L_p$ correlation for SGRBs found by \cite{tsutsui13}. For 53 SGRBs with the observed flux brighter than $4 \times 10^{-6}~{\rm erg~cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$, the cumulative redshift distribution up to $z=1$ agrees well with that of 22 {\it Swift}~SGRBs. This suggests that the redshift determination by the $E_p$--$L_p$ correlation for SGRBs works well. The minimum event rate at $z=0$ is estimated as $ρ_{SGRB}(0) = 6.3_{-3.9}^{+3.1} \times 10^{-10…
The "Scenario Machine" (a computer code designed for studies of the evolution of close binaries) was used to carry out a population synthesis for a wide range of merging astrophysical objects: main-sequence stars with main-sequence stars; white dwarfs with white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes; neutron stars with neutron stars and black holes; and black holes with black holes. We calculate the rates of such events, and plot the mass distributions for merging white dwarfs and main-sequence stars. It is shown that Type Ia supernovae can be used as standard candles only after approximately …
Inferring the properties of dense matter is one of the most exciting prospects from the measurement of gravitational waves from neutron star mergers. However, it will require reliable numerical simulations that incorporate viscous dissipation and energy transport if these can play a significant role within the survival time of the post-merger object. We calculate timescales for typical forms of dissipation and find that thermal transport and shear viscosity will not be important unless neutrino trapping occurs, which requires temperatures above about 10 MeV and gradients over lengthscales of 0…
The coalescence of a neutron-star binary is likely to result in the formation of a neutron-star merger remnant for a large range of binary mass configurations. The massive merger remnant shows strong oscillations, which are excited by the merging process, and emits gravitational waves. Here we discuss possibilities and prospects of inferring unknown stellar properties of neutron stars by the detection of postmerger gravitational-wave emission, which thus leads to constraints of the equation of state of high-density matter. In particular, the dominant oscillation frequency of the postmerger rem…
Using data from 289 numerical relativity simulations of merging binary neutron stars, we identify, for the first time, a robust quasi-universal relation connecting the postmerger peak gravitational-wave frequency and the value of the density at the center of the maximum mass nonrotating neutron star. This relation offers a new possibility for precision equation-of-state constraints with next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers. Mock Einstein Telescope observations of fiducial events indicate that Bayesian inferences can constrain the maximum density to ${\sim}15\%$ ($90\…
An upper limit on the mass of a black hole set by the pair-instability supernovae (PISN) process can be useful in inferring the redshift of the gravitational wave (GW) sources by lifting the degeneracy between mass and redshift. However, for this technique to work, it is essential that the PISN mass-scale is redshift independent or at least has a predictable redshift dependence. We show that the observed PISN mass-scale can get smeared and the position of the PISN mass-scale is likely to exhibit a strong redshift dependence due to a combined effect from the non-zero value of the delay time bet…
Within the minimum model of neutron stars (NS) consisting of neutrons, protons and electrons, a new approach is proposed for inferring the symmetry energy of super-dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter above twice the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter directly from integrating iteratively barotropic pressures in both neutron stars and heavy-ion reactions. Simultaneously, the proton fraction of NSs at $β$ equilibrium is extracted as a function of baryon density from the same procedure. An application of this approach using the NS pressure from GW170817 and the pressure in cold symmetric …
