We approximate the solution of the stationary Stokes equations with various conforming and nonconforming inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces on simplicial meshes. Based on each pair, we design a discretization that is quasi-optimal and pressure robust, in the sense that the velocity $H^1$-error is proportional to the best $H^1$-error to the analytical velocity. This shows that such a property can be achieved without using conforming and divergence-free pairs. We bound also the pressure $L^2$-error, only in terms of the best approximation errors to the analytical velocity and the analytical pressure. Our construction can be summarized as follows. First, a linear operator acts on discrete velocity test functions, before the application of the load functional, and maps the discrete kernel into the analytical one. Second, in order to enforce consistency, we employ a new augmented Lagrangian formulation, inspired by Discontinuous Galerkin methods.
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
In this article we obtain an optimal best approximation type result for fully discrete approximations of the transient Stokes problem. For the time discretization we use the discontinuous Galerkin method and for the spatial discretization we use standard finite elements for the Stokes problem satisfying the discrete inf-sup condition. The analysis uses the technique of discrete maximal parabolic regularity. The results require only natural assumptions on the data and do not assume any additional smoothness of the solutions.
In this manuscript we focus on the question: what is the correct notion of Stokes-Biot stability? Stokes-Biot stable discretizations have been introduced, independently by several authors, as a means of discretizing Biot's equations of poroelasticity; such schemes retain their stability and convergence properties, with respect to appropriately defined norms, in the context of a vanishing storage coefficient and a vanishing hydraulic conductivity. The basic premise of a Stokes-Biot stable discretization is: one part Stokes stability and one part mixed Darcy stability. In this manuscript we rema…
Discontinuous Galerkin methods of higher order are applied as temporal discretizations for the transient Navier--Stokes equations. The spatial discretization based on inf-sup stable pairs of finite element spaces is stabilised using a one-level local projection stabilisation method. Optimal error bounds for the velocity with constants independent of the viscosity parameter are obtained for the semi-discrete case. For the fully discrete case, error estimates for both velocity and pressure are given. Numerical results support the theoretical predictions.
We approximate the solution of the Stokes equations by a new quasi-optimal and pressure robust discontinuous Galerkin discretization of arbitrary order. This means quasi-optimality of the velocity error independent of the pressure. Moreover, the discretization is well-defined for any load which is admissible for the continuous problem and it also provides classical quasi-optimal estimates for the sum of velocity and pressure errors. The key design principle is a careful discretization of the load involving a linear operator, which maps discontinuous Galerkin test functions onto conforming ones…
We are interested in a fast solver for the Stokes equations, discretized with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. In the last years, several inf-sup stable discretizations for the Stokes problem have been proposed, often the analysis was restricted to single-patch domains. We focus on one of the simplest approaches, the isogeometric Taylor--Hood element. We show how stability results for single-patch domains can be carried over to multi-patch domains. While this is possible, the stability strongly depends on the shape of the geometry. We construct a Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Intercon…

We introduce a mimetic dual-field discretization which conserves mass, kinetic energy and helicity for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The discretization makes use of a conservative dual-field mixed weak formulation where two evolution equations of velocity are employed and dual representations of the solution are sought for each variable. A temporal discretization, which staggers the evolution equations and handles the nonlinearity such that the resulting discrete algebraic systems are linear and decoupled, is constructed. The spatial discretization is mimetic in the…
Full moment error estimates in strong norms for numerical approximations of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with multiplicative noise, Part I: time discretization
In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis for the stationary Stokes-Darcy coupled problem approximated by conforming finite element method on isotropic meshes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{2,3\}$. The approach utilizes a new robust stabilized fully mixed discretization developed by Jiaping Yu et al. (Advances in Difference Equations, SpringerOpen Journal, 2018). The a posteriori error estimate is based on a suitable evaluation on the residual of the finite element solution plus the stabilization terms. It is proven that the a posteriori error estimate provided in this paper is both r…
Augmented Lagrangian preconditioners have successfully yielded Reynolds-robust preconditioners for the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, but only for specific discretizations. The discretizations for which these preconditioners have been designed possess error estimates which depend on the Reynolds number, with the discretization error deteriorating as the Reynolds number is increased. In this paper we present an augmented Lagrangian preconditioner for the Scott-Vogelius discretization on barycentrically-refined meshes. This achieves both Reynolds-robust performance and Reynol…
We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
We propose a $p$-multilevel preconditioner for Hybrid High-Order discretizations (HHO) of the Stokes equation, numerically assess its performance on two variants of the method, and compare with a classical Discontinuous Galerkin scheme. We specifically investigate how the combination of $p$-coarsening and static condensation influences the performance of the $V$-cycle iteration for HHO. Two different static condensation procedures are considered, resulting in global linear systems with a different number of unknowns and non-zero elements. An efficient implementation is proposed where coarse le…
We construct and analyze a CutFEM discretization for the Stokes problem based on the Scott-Vogelius pair. The discrete piecewise polynomial spaces are defined on macro-element triangulations which are not fitted to the smooth physical domain. Boundary conditions are imposed via penalization through the help of a Nitsche-type discretization, whereas stability with respect to small and anisotropic cuts of the bulk elements is ensured by adding local ghost penalty stabilization terms. We show stability of the scheme as well as a divergence--free property of the discrete velocity outside an $O(h)$…
The isogeometric approximation of the Stokes problem in a trimmed domain is studied. This setting is characterized by an underlying mesh unfitted with the boundary of the physical domain making the imposition of the essential boundary conditions a challenging problem. A very popular strategy is to rely on the so-called Nitsche method \cite{MR3264337}. We show that the Nitsche method lacks stability in some degenerate trimmed domain configurations, potentially polluting the computed solutions. After extending the stabilization procedure of \cite{MR4155233} to incompressible flow problems, we sh…

In this paper we develop an a priori error analysis of a new unified mixed finite element method for the coupling of fluid flow with porous media flow in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\in\{2,3\}$ on isotropic meshes. Flows are governed by the Stokes and Darcy equations, respectively, and the corresponding transmission conditions are given by mass conservation, balance of normal forces, and the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman law. The approach utilizes a modification of the Darcy problem which allows us to apply a variant nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart finite element to the whole coupled Stokes-Darcy problem. The w…
In this paper, we propose a new approach for the time-discretization of the incompressible stochastic Stokes equations with multiplicative noise. Our new strategy is based on the classical Milstein method from stochastic differential equations. We use the energy method for its error analysis and show a strong convergence order of at most $1$ for both velocity and pressure approximations. The proof is based on a new Hölder continuity estimate of the velocity solution. While the errors of the velocity approximation are estimated in the standard $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms, the pressure errors are car…
A numerical method for the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in vorticity--streamfunction form is proposed, which employs semi-Lagrangian discretizations for both the advection and diffusion terms, thus achieving unconditional stability without the need to solve linear systems beyond that required by the Poisson solver for the reconstruction of the streamfunction. A description of the discretization of Dirichlet boundary conditions for the semi-Lagrangian approach to diffusion terms is also presented. Numerical experiments on classical benchmarks for incompressible flow …
We consider the Virtual Element method (VEM) introduced by Beirão da Veiga, Lovadina and Vacca in 2016 for the numerical solution of the steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations; the method has arbitrary order $k \geq 2$ and guarantees divergence-free velocities. For such discretization, we develop a residual-based a posteriori error estimator, which is a combination of standard terms in VEM analysis (residual terms, data oscillation, and VEM stabilization), plus some other terms originated by the VEM discretization of the nonlinear convective term. We show that a linear combination of t…
We consider the problem of iteratively solving large and sparse double saddle-point systems arising from the stationary Stokes-Darcy equations in two dimensions, discretized by the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) finite difference method. We analyze the eigenvalue distribution of a few ideal block preconditioners. We then derive practical preconditioners that are based on approximations of Schur complements that arise in a block decomposition of the double saddle-point matrix. We show that including the interface conditions in the preconditioners is key in the pursuit of scalability. Numerical results s…

We consider the Virtual Element discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat equation where the viscosity depends on the temperature. We present the Virtual Element discretization of the coupled problem, show its well-posedness, and prove optimal error estimates. Numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical error bounds are also presented.
The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a new family of numerical methods for the approximation of partial differential equations, where the geometry of the polytopal mesh elements can be very general. The aim of this article is to extend the balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC) preconditioner to the solution of the saddle-point linear system arising from a VEM discretization of the two-dimensional Stokes equations. Under suitable hypotesis on the choice of the primal unknowns, the preconditioned linear system results symmetric and positive definite, thus the preconditioned conjuga…
Boundary integral numerical methods are among the most accurate methods for interfacial Stokes flow, and are widely applied. They have the advantage that only the boundary of the domain must be discretized, which reduces the number of discretization points and allows the treatment of complicated interfaces. Despite their popularity, there is no analysis of the convergence of these methods for interfacial Stokes flow. In practice, the stability of discretizations of the boundary integral formulation can depend sensitively on details of the discretization and on the application of numerical filt…
We prove that the implicit time Euler scheme coupled with finite elements space discretization for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus subject to a random perturbation converges in $L^2(Ω)$, and describe the rate of convergence for an $H^1$-valued initial condition. This refines previous results which only established the convergence in probability of these numerical approximations. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations and convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of this space-time approximation. The spee…
We consider a surface Stokes problem in stream function formulation on a simply connected oriented surface $Γ\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ without boundary. This formulation leads to a coupled system of two second order scalar surface partial differential equations (for the stream function and an auxiliary variable). To this coupled system a trace finite element discretization method is applied. The main topic of the paper is an error analysis of this discretization method, resulting in optimal order discretization error bounds. The analysis applies to the surface finite element method of Dziuk-Elliot…
