We will consider the nonlocal Hénon equation $$(-Δ)^s u= |x|^α u^{p},\quad \mathbb{R}^{N},$$ where $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian operator with $0<s<1$, $-2s<α$, $p>1$ and $N>2s$. We prove a nonexistence result for positive solutions in the optimal range of the nonlinearity, that is, when $$1<p<p^*_{α, s}:=\frac{N+2α+2s}{N-2s}.$$ Moreover, we prove that a bubble solution, that is a fast decay positive radially symmetric solutions, exists when $p=p_{α, s}^{*}$.
In this paper, we study the equation $\mathcal{L} u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $\mathcal{L}$ belongs to a general class of nonlocal linear operators which may be anisotropic and nonsymmetric. We classify distributional solutions of this equation, thereby extending and generalizing recent Liouville type theorems in the case where $\mathcal{L}= (-Δ)^s$, $s \in (0,1)$ is the classical fractional Laplacian.
We address the uniqueness of the nonzero stationary state for a reaction-diffusion system of Fisher-KPP type that does not satisfy the comparison principle. Although the uniqueness is false in general, it turns out to be true under biologically natural assumptions on the parameters. This Liouville-type result is then used to characterize the wake of traveling waves. All results are extended to an analogous nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation that contains as a particular case the cane toads equation with bounded traits.
In this paper, we prove some Liouville theorem for the following elliptic equations involving nonlocal nonlinearity and nonlocal boundary value condition $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δu(y)=\intpr \frac{ F(u(x',0))}{|(x',0)-y|^{N-α}}dx'g(u(y)), &y\in\R, \\ \\ \displaystyle \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}(x',0)=\intr \frac{G(u(y))}{|(x',0)-y|^{N-α}}\,dy f(u(x',0)), &(x',0)\in\partial \mathbb R_+^N, \end{array} \right. $$ where $\mathbb R_+^N=\{x\in \mathbb R^N:x_N>0\}$, $f,g,F,G$ are some nonlinear functions. Under some assumptions on the nonlinear functions $f,g,F,G$, we will show …
Using a fixed point theorem in a proper Banach space, we prove existence and uniqueness results of positive solutions for a fractional Riemann-Liouville nonlocal thermistor problem on arbitrary nonempty closed subsets of the real numbers.
This paper is concerned with qualitative properties of solutions to nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations of the form$$ \int\_{\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K} J(x-y)\,\big( u(y)-u(x) \big)\,\D y+f(u(x))=0, \quad x\in\R^N\setminus K,$$set in a perforated open set $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K$, where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded compact "obstacle" and $f$ is a bistable nonlinearity. When $K$ is convex, we prove some Liouville-type results for solutions satisfying some asymptotic limiting conditions at infinity. We also establish a robustness result, assuming slightly relaxed conditions on $K$.
We consider the nonlocal Hénon-Gelfand-Liouville problem $$ (-Δ)^s u = |x|^a e^u\quad\mathrm{in}\quad \mathbb R^n, $$ for every $s\in(0,1)$, $a>0$ and $n>2s$. We prove a monotonicity formula for solutions of the above equation using rescaling arguments. We apply this formula together with blow-down analysis arguments and technical integral estimates to establish non-existence of finite Morse index solutions when $$\dfrac{Γ(\frac n2)Γ(s)}{Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}\left(s+\frac a2\right)> \dfrac{Γ^2(\frac{n+2s}{4})}{Γ^2(\frac{n-2s}{4})}.$$
We consider the nonlocal Liouville type equation $$ (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u = \varepsilon κ(x) e^u, \quad u > 0, \quad \mbox{in } I, \qquad u = 0, \quad \mbox{in } \mathbb{R} \setminus I, $$ where $I$ is a union of $d \geq 2$ disjoint bounded intervals, $κ$ is a smooth bounded function with positive infimum and $\varepsilon > 0$ is a small parameter. For any integer $1 \leq m \leq d$, we construct a family of solutions $(u_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon}$ which blow up at $m$ interior distinct points of $I$ and for which $\varepsilon \int_I κe^{u_\varepsilon} \, \rightarrow 2 m π$, as $\varepsilon \to…
In this paper, a Sturm--Liouville problem with some nonlocal boundary conditions of the Bitsadze-Samarskii type is studied. We show that the coefficients of the problem can be uniquely determined by a dense set of nodal points. Moreover, we give an algorithm for the reconstruction of the potential function and some other coefficients in the boundary conditions.
In this paper, we are concerned with the mild solutions of Riemann-Liouville fractional differential equations with nonlocal conditions in Banach space. We use Banach contraction principle to prove the existence and uniqueness. Moreover, we derive the existence by using Krasnoselkii's theorem. An illustrative example is presented.
We investigate the characterization of generators $\mathcal{L}$ of Lévy processes satisfying the Liouville theorem: Bounded functions $u$ solving $\mathcal{L}[u]=0$ are constant. These operators are degenerate elliptic of the form $\mathcal{L}=\mathcal{L}^{σ,b}+\mathcal{L}^μ$ for some local part $\mathcal{L}^{σ,b}[u]=\text{tr}(σσ^{\texttt{T}} D^2u)+b \cdot Du$ and nonlocal part $$ \mathcal{L}^μ[u](x)=\int \big(u(x+z)-u(x)-z \cdot Du(x) \mathbf{1}_{|z| \leq 1}\big) \, \text{d} μ(z), $$ where $μ\geq 0$ is a so-called Lévy measure possibly unbounded for small $z$. In this paper, we focus on the p…
We study metrics of constant $Q$-curvature in the Euclidean space with a prescribed singularity at the origin, namely solutions to the equation $$(-Δ)^\frac{n}{2}w=e^{nw}-cδ_{0} \text{ on } \mathbb R^n,$$ under a finite volume condition. We analyze the asymptotic behaviour at infinity and the existence of solutions for every $n\ge 3$ also in a supercritical regime. Finally, we state some open problems.
We study nonexistence and existence of nontrivial positive solutions to the following semilinear elliptic inequality involving gradient terms \[ Δu+u^p\left|\nabla u\right|^q\leq0, \] on weighted graphs, where $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^2$. We give a complete classification of $(p,q)$ under which sharp volume growth assumptions are established.
In this paper, we construct a counterexample to the Liouville property of some nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations of the form$$ \int\_{\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K} J(x-y)\,( u(y)-u(x) )\mathrm{d}y+f(u(x))=0, \quad x\in\R^N\setminus K,$$where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded compact set, called an "obstacle", and $f$ is a bistable nonlinearity. When $K$ is convex, it is known that solutions ranging in $[0,1]$ and satisfying $u(x)\to1$ as $|x|\to\infty$ must be identically $1$ in the whole space. We construct a nontrivial family of simply connected (non-starshaped) obstacles as well as data $f…
We prove uniqueness of solutions for the nonlocal Liouville equation $$ (-Δ)^{1/2} w = K e^w \quad \mbox{in $\mathbb{R}$} $$ with finite total $Q$-curvature $\int_{\mathbb{R}} K e^w \, dx< +\infty$. Here the prescribed $Q$-curvature function $K=K(|x|) > 0$ is assumed to be a positive, symmetric-decreasing function satisfying suitable regularity and decay bounds. In particular, we obtain uniqueness of solutions in the Gaussian case with $K(x) = \exp(-x^2)$. Our uniqueness proof exploits a connection of the nonlocal Liouville equation to ground state solitons for Calogero--Moser derivative NLS, …
We consider the fractional elliptic inequality with variable-exponent nonlinearity $$ (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}} u+λ\, Δu \geq |u|^{p(x)}, \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $N\geq 1$, $α\in (0,2)$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ is a constant, $p: \mathbb{R}^N\to (1,\infty)$ is a measurable function, and $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ is the fractional Laplacian operator of order $\fracα{2}$. A Liouville-type theorem is established for the considered problem. Namely, we obtain sufficient conditions under which the only weak solution is the trivial one. Next, we extend our study to systems of fractional elliptic inequalities with …
In this paper, we establish the sharp criteria for the nonexistence of positive solutions to the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) type system of nonlinear equations and the corresponding nonlinear differential systems of Lane-Emden type equations. These nonexistence results, known as Liouville type theorems, are fundamental in PDE theory and applications. A special iteration scheme, a new shooting method and some Pohozaev type identities in integral form as well as in differential form are created. Combining these new techniques with some observations and some critical asymptotic analysis, we es…
In this paper we perform a blow-up and quantization analysis of the following nonlocal Liouville-type equation \begin{equation}(-Δ)^\frac12 u= κe^u-1~\mbox{in $S^1$,} \end{equation} where $(-Δ)^\frac{1}{2}$ stands for the fractional Laplacian and $κ$ is a bounded function. We interpret the above equation as the prescribed curvature equation to a curve in conformal parametrization. We also establish a relation between this equation and the analogous equation in $\mathbb{R}$ \begin{equation} (-Δ)^\frac{1}{2} u =Ke^u \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}, \end{equation} with $K$ bounded on $\mathbb{R}$.
We pursue the study of one-dimensional symmetry of solutions to nonlinear equations involving nonlocal operators. We consider a vast class of nonlinear operators and in a particular case it covers the fractional $p-$Laplacian operator. Just like the classical De Giorgi's conjecture, we establish a Poincaré inequality and a linear Liouville theorem to provide two different proofs of the one-dimensional symmetry results in two dimensions. Both approaches are of independent interests. In addition, we provide certain energy estimates for layer solutions and Liouville theorems for stable solutions.…
We investigate existence, Liouville type theorems and regularity results for the 3D stationary and incompressible fractional Navier-Stokes equations: in this setting the usual Laplacian is replaced by its fractional power $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ with $0<α<2$. By applying a fixed point argument, weak solutions can be obtained in the Sobolev space $\dot{H}^{\fracα{2}}(\mathbb{R})$ and if we add an extra integrability condition, stated in terms of Lebesgue spaces, then we can prove for some values of $α$ that the zero function is the unique smooth solution. The additional integrability condition is al…
Consider the equation div$(φ^2 \nabla σ)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N,$ where $φ>0$. Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg proved that if there exists $C>0$ such that $\int_{B_R}(φσ)^2 \leq CR^2$ for every $R\geq 1$ then $σ$ is necessarily constant. In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on $0<Ψ\in C([1,\infty))$ for which this result remains true if we replace $R^2$ with $Ψ(R)$ in any dimension $N$. In the case of the convexity of $Ψ$ for large $R>1$ and $Ψ'>0$, this condition is equivalent to $\displaystyle{\int_1^\infty\frac{1}{Ψ'}=\infty}$.
We introduce a new condition on elliptic operators $L= {1/2}\triangle + b \cdot \nabla $ which ensures the validity of the Liouville property for bounded solutions to $Lu=0$ on $\R^d$. Such condition is sharp when $d=1$. We extend our Liouville theorem to more general second order operators in non-divergence form assuming a Cordes type condition.
Under a sharp asymptotic growth condition at infinity, we prove a Liouville type theorem for the inhomogeneous porous medium equation, provided it stays universally close to the heat equation. Additionally, for the homogeneous equation, we show that for the conclusion to hold, it is enough to assume the sharp asymptotic growth at infinity only in the space variable. The results are optimal, meaning that the growth condition at infinity cannot be weakened.
In this paper, we first establish decay estimates for the fractional and higher-order fractional Hénon-Lane-Emden systems by using a nonlocal average and integral estimates, which deduce a result of non-existence. Next, we apply the method of scaling spheres introduced in \cite{DQ2} to derive a Liouville type theorem. We also construct an interesting example on super $\fracα{2}$-harmonic functions (Proposition 1.2).
We study fully nonlinear elliptic equations such as \[ F(D^2u) = u^p, \quad p>1, \] in $\R^n$ or in exterior domains, where $F$ is any uniformly elliptic, positively homogeneous operator. We show that there exists a critical exponent, depending on the homogeneity of the fundamental solution of $F$, that sharply characterizes the range of $p>1$ for which there exist positive supersolutions or solutions in any exterior domain. Our result generalizes theorems of Bidaut-Véron \cite{B} as well as Cutri and Leoni \cite{CL}, who found critical exponents for supersolutions in the whole space $\R^n$, i…
We prove a sharp Onofri-type inequality and non-existence of extremals for a Moser-Tudinger functional on the sphere in the presence of potentials having positive order singularities. We also investigate the existence of critical points and give some sufficient conditions under symmetry or nondegeneracy assumptions.
We study a class of traffic flow models with nonlocal look-ahead interactions. The global regularity of solutions depend on the initial data. We obtain sharp critical threshold conditions that distinguish the initial data into a trichotomy: subcritical initial conditions lead to global smooth solutions, while two types of supercritical initial conditions lead to two kinds of finite time shock formations. The existence of non-trivial subcritical initial data indicates that the nonlocal look-ahead interactions can help avoid shock formations, and hence prevent the creation of traffic jams.
In this work we study a generalized nonlocal thermistor problem with fractional-order Riemann-Liouville derivative. Making use of fixed-point theory, we obtain existence and uniqueness of a positive solution.
We consider entire solutions to $L u= f(u)$ in $\RR^2$, where $L$ is a general nonlocal operator with kernel $K(y)$. Under certain natural assumtions on the operator $L$, we show that any stable solution is a 1D solution. In particular, our result applies to any solution $u$ which is monotone in one direction. Compared to other proofs of the De Giorgi type results on nonlocal equations, our method is the first successfull attempt to use the Liouville theorem approach to get flatness of the level sets.
We consider a nonlocal semi-linear parabolic equation on a connected exterior domain of the form $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K$, where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a compact "obstacle". The model we study is motivated by applications in biology and takes into account long range dispersal events that may be anisotropic depending on how a given population perceives the environment. To formulate this in a meaningful manner, we introduce a new theoretical framework which is of both mathematical and biological interest. The main goal of this paper is to construct an entire solution that behaves like a plan…
In this paper, we proceed to study the nonlocal diffusion problem proposed by Li and Wang [8], where the left boundary is fixed, while the right boundary is a nonlocal free boundary. We first give some accurate estimates on the longtime behavior by constructing lower solutions, and then investigate the limiting profiles of this problem when the expanding coefficient of free boundary converges to $0$ and $\yy$, respectively. At last, we focus on two important kinds of kernel functions, one of which is compactly supported and the other behaves like $|x|^{-γ}$ with $γ\in(1,2]$ near infinity. With…
We derive a sharp, localized version of elliptic type gradient estimates for positive solutions (bounded or not) to the heat equation. These estimates are akin to the Cheng-Yau estimate for the Laplace equation and Hamilton's estimate for bounded solutions to the heat equation on compact manifolds. As applications, we generalize Yau's celebrated Liouville theorem for positive harmonic functions to positive eternal solutions of the heat equation, under certain growth condition. Surprisingly, this Liouville theorem for the heat equation does not hold even in ${\bf R}^n$ without such a condition.…
In many cases, groundwater flow in an unconfined aquifer can be simplified to a one-dimensional Sturm-Liouville model of the form: \begin{equation*} x''(t)+λx(t)=h(t)+\varepsilon f(x(t)),\hspace{.1in}t\in(0,π) \end{equation*} subject to non-local boundary conditions \begin{equation*} x(0)=h_1+\varepsilonη_1(x)\text{ and } x(π)=h_2+\varepsilonη_2(x). \end{equation*} In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the above Sturm-Liouville problem under the assumption that $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. Our method will be analytical, utilizing the implicit function theorem and its gen…
In this paper we prove a Moser-Trudinger inequality for the Euler-Lagrange functional of a general singular Liouville system. We characterize the values of the parameters which yield coercivity for the functional and we give necessary conditions for boundedness from below. We also provide a sharp inequality under some assumptions on the coefficients of the system.
We prove the symmetry of components and some Liouville-type theorems for, possibly sign changing, entire distributional solutions to a family of nonlinear elliptic systems encompassing models arising in Bose-Einstein condensation and in nonlinear optics. For these models we also provide precise classification results for non-negative solutions. The sharpness of our results is also discussed.
A unified clasification of Liouville properties and nontrivial solution for fractional elliptic equations with general Hénon-type superquadratic and gradient growth
We establish $C^{σ+α}$ interior estimates for concave nonlocal fully nonlinear equations of order $σ\in(0,2)$ with rough kernels. Namely, we prove that if $u\in C^α(\mathbb R^n)$ solves in $B_1$ a concave translation invariant equation with kernels in $\mathcal L_0(σ)$, then $u$ belongs to $C^{σ+α}(\overline{ B_{1/2}})$, with an estimate. More generally, our results allow the equation to depend on $x$ in a $C^α$ fashion. Our method of proof combines a Liouville theorem and a blow-up (compactness) procedure. Due to its flexibility, the same method can be useful in different regularity proofs fo…
We consider entire solutions to $\mathcal{L}u=f(u)$ in $\mathbb R^2$, where $\mathcal L$ is a nonlocal operator with translation invariant, even and compactly supported kernel $K$. Under different assumptions on the operator $\mathcal L$, we show that monotone solutions are necessarily one-dimensional. The proof is based on a Liouville type approach. A variational characterization of the stability notion is also given, extending our results in some cases to stable solutions.
This note is a synthesis of my reflexions on some questions that have emerged during the MATRIX event "Recent Trends on Nonlinear PDEs of Elliptic and Parabolic Type" concerning the qualitative properties of solutions to some non local reaction-diffusion equations of the form L[u](x) + f (u(x)) = 0, for x $\in$ R n \ K, where K $\subset$ R N is a bounded smooth compact "obstacle", L is non local operator and f is a bistable nonlinearity. When K is convex and the nonlocal operator L is a continuous operator of convolution type then some Liouville-type results for solutions satisfying some asymp…
We prove some Liouville type theorems on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and strictly convex boundary. This gives a nonlinear generalization in low dimension of the recent sharp lower bound of the first Steklov eigenvalue by Xia-Xiong and verifies partially a conjecture by the third author. As a consequence, we derive several sharp Sobolev trace inequalities on these manifolds.
We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.
In this paper we perform a blow-up and quantization analysis of the fractional Liouville equation in dimension $1$. More precisely, given a sequence $u_k :\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ of solutions to \begin{equation} (-Δ)^\frac{1}{2} u_k =K_ke^{u_k}\quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}, \end{equation} with $K_k$ bounded in $L^\infty$ and $e^{u_k}$ bounded in $L^1$ uniformly with respect to $k$, we show that up to extracting a subsequence $u_k$ can blow-up at (at most) finitely many points $B=\{a_1,\dots, a_N\}$ and either (i) $u_k\to u_\infty$ in $W^{1,p}_{loc}(\mathbb{R}\setminus B)$ and $K_ke^{u_k} \stac…
We prove the local boundedness and the local Hölder continuity of weak solutions to nonlocal equations with variable orders and exponents under sharp assumptions.
