We report a molecular dynamics study of liquid cesium at ambient pressure intended to check the possibility of liquid-liquid phase transformation at $T=590$ K. We find the presence of small kinks on thermodynamic characteristics of the system, but no phase transition.
We report a new experimental approach for observing mesoscopic fluctuations underlying the thermodynamic anomalies of ambient liquid water. In this approach, two sound velocity measurements with different frequencies, namely inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) in THz band and ultrasonic (US) in MHz band, are required to investigate the relaxation phenomenon with the characteristic frequency between the two aforementioned frequencies. We performed IXS measurements to obtain the IXS sound velocity of liquid water from the ambient conditions to the supercritical region of liquid-gas phase transition…
Water is essential for life and technological applications, mainly for its unique thermodynamic and dynamic properties, often anomalous or counterintuitive. These anomalies result from the hydrogen-bonds fluctuations, as evidenced by studies for supercooled water. However, it is difficult to characterize these fluctuations under ambient conditions. Here, we fill this knowledge gap thanks to the Car-Parrinello ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulation technique. We calculate the local structural order parameter ζ, quantifying the coordination shells separation, and find two locally-favored s…
We present a theoretical study of the intrusion of an ambient liquid into pores of a nano-corrugated wall w. The pores are prefilled with a liquid lubricant which adheres to the walls of the pores more strongly than the ambient liquid. The two liquids are modeled as a binary mixture of two types of particles, A and B. The mixture can decompose into an A-rich(ambient) liquid, and a B-rich(lubricant) liquid. The wall attracts B particles more strongly than A particles. The ratio of w-A to w-B interaction strengths is changed to tune the contact angle $θ_{AB}$ formed by the A-rich/B-rich liquid i…
Electrowetting (EW) of water drops in ambient oil has found a wide range of applications including lab-on-a-chip devices, display screens, and variable focus lenses. The efficacy of all these applications is dependent on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH), which is generally reduced in the presence of ambient oil due to thin lubrication layers. While it is well-known that AC voltage reduces the effective contact angle hysteresis (CAH) for EW in ambient air, we demonstrate here that CAH for EW in ambient oil increases with increasing AC and DC voltage. Taking into account the disjoining pressur…
We present in this paper a computational approach based on molecular dynamics simulations and graph theory to characterize the structure of liquid water considering not only the local structural arrangement within the first (or second) hydration shell, but also the medium- to long-range order. In particular, a new order parameter borrowed from the graph-theory framework, i.e. the node total communicability (NTC ), is introduced to analyze the dynamic network of water molecules in the liquid phase. This order parameter is able not only to accurately report on the different high-density-liquid (…
Molecular-scale dynamics in sub- to super-critical water is studied with inelastic X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. The obtained longitudinal current correlation spectra can be decomposed into two main components: a low-frequency (LF), gas-like component and a high-frequency (HF) component arising from the O--O stretching mode between hydrogen-bonded molecules, reminiscent of the longitudinal acoustic mode in ambient water. With increasing temperature, the hydrogen-bond network diminishes and the spectral weight shifts from HF to LF, leading to a transition from liquid-like…
Nanoscale topographic features of solid surfaces can induce complex metastable behavior in colloidal and multiphase systems. Recent studies on single microparticle adsorption at liquid interfaces have reported a crossover from fast capillary driven dynamics to extremely slow kinetic regimes that can require up to several hours or days to attain thermodynamic equilibrium. The observed kinetic regime resembling physical ageing in glassy materials has been attributed to unobserved surface features with dimensions on the order of a few nanometers. In this work, we study the spontaneous spreading o…
The contributed paper by Naserifar and Goddard reports that their RexPoN water model under ambient conditions simulates liquid water as a dynamic polydisperse branched polymer, which they speculate explains the existence of the liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP) in the supercooled region. Our work addresses several serious factual errors and needless speculation in their paper about their interpretation of their model and its implication for the LLCP in supercooled water.
We examine the Sastry (athermal cavitation) transitions for model monatomic liquids interacting via Lennard-Jones as well as shorter- and longer-ranged pair potentials. Low-temperature thermodynamically stable liquids have $ρ< ρ_S$ except when the attractive forces are long-ranged. For moderate- and short-ranged attractions, stable liquids with $ρ> ρ_S$ exist at higher temperatures; the pressures in these liquids are high, but the Sastry transition may strongly influence their cavitation under dynamic hydrostatic expansion. The temperature $T^*$ at which stable $ρ> ρ_S$ liquids emerge is $\sim…
We develop the elastically collective nonlinear Langevin equation theory of bulk relaxation of glass-forming liquids to investigate molecular mobility under compression conditions. The applied pressure restricts more molecular motion and therefore significantly slows-down the molecular dynamics when increasing the pressure. We quantitatively determine the temperature and pressure dependence of the structural relaxation time. To validate our model, dielectric spectroscopy experiments for three rigid and non-polymeric supramolecules are carried out at ambient and elevated pressures. The numerica…

We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of liquid water in the canonical ensemble at ambient conditions using the SCAN meta-GGA functional approximation, and carry out systematic comparisons with the results obtained from the GGA-level PBE functional, and Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals (vdW) dispersion correction inclusive PBE functional. We analyze various properties of liquid water including radial distribution functions, oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, tetrahedrality, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficients, ring statistics, density of states, band ga…
