The velocity, coupling term in the flow and transport problems, is important in the accurate numerical simulation or in the posteriori error analysis for adaptive mesh refinement. We consider Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method for the incompressible Darcy flow. In this paper, our aim to study the improvement of velocity at interface to achieve the better approximation of velocity between subdomains. We propose the reconstruction of velocity at interface by using the post-processed pressure. Numerical results at the interface show improvement on convergence rate.
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
We propose a mixed finite element method for Stokes flow with one degree of freedom per element and facet of simplicial grids. The method is derived by considering the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation and eliminating the vorticity locally through the use of a quadrature rule. The discrete solution is pointwise divergence-free and the method is pressure robust. The theoretically derived convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.
Within the last years pressure robust methods for the discretization of incompressible fluids have been developed. These methods allow the use of standard finite elements for the solution of the problem while simultaneously removing a spurious pressure influence in the approximation error of the velocity of the fluid, or the displacement of an incompressible solid. To this end, reconstruction operators are utilized mapping discretely divergence free functions to divergence free functions. This work shows that the modifications proposed for Stokes equation by Linke (2014) also yield gradient ro…
In this paper, we propose and analyze an abstract stabilized mixed finite element framework that can be applied to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems. In the abstract stabilized framework, we prove that any mixed finite element method that satisfies the discrete inf-sup condition can be modified so that it is stable and optimal convergent as long as the mixed continuous problem is stable. Furthermore, we apply the abstract stabilized framework to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems and present numerical experiments to verify the theoretical results.
Wormhole propagation plays a very important role in the product enhancement of oil and gas reservoir. A new combined hybrid mixed finite element method is proposed to solve incompressible wormhole propagation problem with discontinuous Galerkin finite element procedure, in which, the new hybrid mixed finite element algorithm is established for pressure equation, while the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is considered for concentration equation, and then the porosity function is computed straightly by the approximate value of the concentration. This new combined method can keep loc…
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
We introduce conformal mixed finite element methods for $2$D and $3$D incompressible nonlinear elasticity in terms of displacement, displacement gradient, the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor, and pressure, where finite elements for the $\mathrm{curl}$ and the $\mathrm{div}$ operators are used to discretize strain and stress, respectively. These choices of elements follow from the strain compatibility and the momentum balance law. Some inf-sup conditions are derived to study the stability of methods. By considering $96$ choices of simplicial finite elements of degree less than or equal to $…
Analysis of Galerkin-mixed FEMs for incompressible miscible flow in porous media has been investigated extensively in the last several decades. Of particular interest in practical applications is the lowest-order Galerkin-mixed method, { in which a linear Lagrange FE approximation is used for the concentration and the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas FE approximation is used for the velocity/pressure. The previous works only showed the first-order accuracy of the method in $L^2$-norm in spatial direction,} which however is not optimal and valid only under certain extra restrictions on both time ste…
The paper focuses on a new error analysis of a class of mixed FEMs for stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with the standard inf-sup stable velocity-pressure space pairs to Navier-Stokes equations and the Nédélec's edge element for the magnetic field. The methods have been widely used in various numerical simulations in the last several decades, while the existing analysis is not optimal due to the strong coupling of system and the pollution of the lower-order Nédélec's edge approximation in analysis. In terms of a newly modified Maxwell projection we establish new and optimal error…
In this work, we consider pressurized phase-field fracture problems in nearly and fully incompressible materials. To this end, a mixed form for the solid equations is proposed. To enhance the accuracy of the spatial discretization, a residual-type error estimator is developed. Our algorithmic advancements are substantiated with several numerical tests that are inspired from benchmark configurations. Therein, a primal-based formulation is compared to our newly developed mixed phase-field fracture method for Poisson ratios approaching $ν\to 0.5$. Finally, for $ν= 0.5$, we compare the numerical r…

We consider mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity where the symmetry of the stress tensor is weakly enforced. Both an a priori and a posteriori error analysis are given for several known families of methods that are uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. A posteriori estimates are derived for both the compressible and incompressible cases. The results are verified by numerical examples.
In the flow and transport numerical simulation, mesh adaptivity strategy is important in reducing the usage of CPU time and memory. The refinement based on the pressure error estimator is commonly-used approach without considering the flux error which plays important role in coupling flow and transport systems. We derive a posteriori error estimators for Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM) in the incompressible Darcy flow. We show numerically difference of the explicit residual based error estimator and implicit error estimators, where Arbogast and Chen post-processing proce…
The favored phase field method (PFM) has encountered challenges in the finite strain fracture modeling of nearly or truly incompressible hyperelastic materials. We identified that the underlying cause lies in the innate contradiction between incompressibility and smeared crack opening. Drawing on the stiffness-degradation idea in PFM, we resolved this contradiction through loosening incompressible constraint of the damaged phase without affecting the incompressibility of intact material. By modifying the perturbed Lagrangian approach, we derived a novel mixed formulation. In numerical aspects,…

A structure-preserving integrator for incompressible finite elastodynamics based on a grad-div stabilized mixed formulation with particular emphasis on stretch-based material models
A new family of mixed finite element methods$-$compatible-strain mixed finite element methods (CSFEMs)$-$are introduced for three-dimensional compressible and incompressible nonlinear elasticity. A Hu-Washizu-type functional is extremized in order to obtain a mixed formulation for nonlinear elasticity. The independent fields of the mixed formulations are the displacement, the displacement gradient, and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress. A pressure-like field is also introduced in the case of incompressible elasticity. We define the displacement in $H^1$, the displacement gradient in $H(curl)$, …
We propose a family of mixed finite elements that are robust for the nearly incompressible strain gradient model, which is a fourth-order singular perturbed elliptic system. The element is similar to [C. Taylor and P. Hood, Comput. & Fluids, 1(1973), 73-100] in the Stokes flow. Using a uniform discrete B-B inequality for the mixed finite element pairs, we show the optimal rate of convergence that is robust in the incompressible limit. By a new regularity result that is uniform in both the materials parameter and the incompressibility, we prove the method converges with $1/2$ order to the solut…
The time discrete scheme of characteristics type is especially effective for convection-dominated diffusion problems. The scheme has been used in various engineering areas with different approximations in spatial direction. The lowest-order mixed method is the most popular one for miscible flow in porous media. The method is based on a linear Lagrange approximation to the concentration and the zero-order Raviart-Thomas approximation to the pressure/velocity. However, the optimal error estimate for the lowest-order characteristics-mixed FEM has not been presented although numerous effort has be…
Results on asymptotic characteristics of classes of functions with mixed smoothness are obtained in the paper. Our main interest is in estimating the Kolmogorov widths of classes with small mixed smoothness. We prove the corresponding bounds for the unit balls of the trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from a hyperbolic cross. We demonstrate how our results on the Kolmogorov widths imply new upper bounds for the optimal sampling recovery in the $L_2$ norm of functions with small mixed smoothness.
We present a new, stable, mixed finite element (FE) method for linear elastostatics of nearly incompressible solids. The method is the automatic variationally stable FE (AVS-FE) method of Calo, Romkes and Valseth, in which we consider a Petrov-Galerkin weak formulation where the stress and displacement variables are in the space H(div)xH1, respectively. This allows us to employ a fully conforming FE discretization for any elastic solid using classical FE subspaces of H(div) and H1. Hence, the resulting FE approximation yields both continuous stresses and displacements. To ensure stability of t…
For the second lowest-order Raviart--Thomas mixed method, we prove that the canonical interpolant and finite element solution for the vector variable in elliptic problems are superclose in the $H(\text{div})$-norm on mildly structured meshes, where most pairs of adjacent triangles form approximate parallelograms. We then develop a family of postprocessing operators for Raviart--Thomas mixed elements on triangular grids by using the idea of local least squares fittings. Super-approximation property of the postprocessing operators for the lowest and second lowest order Raviart--Thomas elements i…

In the classical theory of fluid mechanics a linear relationship between the shear stress and the symmetric velocity gradient tensor is often assumed. Even when a nonlinear relationship is assumed, it is typically formulated in terms of an explicit relation. Implicit constitutive models provide a theoretical framework that generalises this, allowing for general implicit constitutive relations. Since it is generally not possible to solve explicitly for the shear stress in the constitutive relation, a natural approach is to include the shear stress as a fundamental unknown in the formulation of …
In the spirit of the "Principle of Equipresence" introduced by Truesdell & Toupin, The Classical Field Theories (1960), we use the full version of the viscous stress tensor which was originally derived for compressible flows, instead of the classical incompressible stress tensor. In our approach, the divergence-free constraint for the viscous stress term is not enforced ahead of discretization. Instead, our formulation allows the scheme itself to "choose" a consistent way to interpret the divergence-free constraint: i.e., the divergence-free constraint is interpreted (or enforced) in a consist…
We consider mixed finite element methods with exact symmetric stress tensors. We derive a new quasi-optimal a priori error estimate uniformly valid with respect to the compressibility. For the a posteriori error analysis we consider the Prager-Synge hypercircle principle and introduce a new estimate uniformly valid in the incompressible limit. All estimates are validated by numerical examples.
In this paper we analyze a pressure-robust method based on divergence-free mixed finite element methods with continuous interior penalty stabilization. The main goal is to prove an $O(h^{k+1/2})$ error estimate for the $L^2$ norm of the velocity in the convection dominated regime. This bound is pressure robust (the error bound of the velocity does not depend on the pressure) and also convection robust (the constants in the error bounds are independent of the Reynolds number).
This report extends the mathematical support of a subgrid artificial viscosity (SAV) method to simulate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to better performing a linearly extrapolated BDF2 (BDF2LE) time discretization. The method considers the viscous term as a combination of the vorticity and the grad-div stabilization term. SAV method introduces global stabilization by adding a term, then antidiffuses through the extra mixed variables. We present a detailed analysis of conservation laws, including both energy and helicity balance of the method. We also show that the approximate solut…
This paper proposes a novel way to solve transient linear, and non-linear solid dynamics for compressible, nearly incompressible, and incompressible material in the updated Lagrangian framework for tetrahedral unstructured finite elements. It consists of a mixed formulation in both displacement and pressure, where the momentum equation of the continuum is complemented with a pressure equation that handles incompresibility inherently. It is obtained through the deviatoric and volumetric split of the stress, that enables us to solve the problem in the incompressible limit. The Varitaional Multi-…

This work presents a new adaptive approach for the numerical simulation of a phase-field model for fractures in nearly incompressible solids. In order to cope with locking effects, we use a recently proposed mixed form where we have a hydro-static pressure as additional unknown besides the displacement field and the phase-field variable. To fulfill the fracture irreversibility constraint, we consider a formulation as a variational inequality in the phase-field variable. For adaptive mesh refinement, we use a recently developed residual-type a posteriori error estimator for the phase-field vari…
We tensorize the Faber spline system from [14] to prove sequence space isomorphisms for multivariate function spaces with higher mixed regularity. The respective basis coefficients are local linear combinations of discrete function values similar as for the classical Faber Schauder system. This allows for a sparse representation of the function using a truncated series expansion by only storing discrete (finite) set of function values. The set of nodes where the function values are taken depends on the respective function in a non-linear way. Indeed, if we choose the basis functions adaptively…
In this paper we study finite element method for three-dimensional incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations, in which the velocity, the current density, and the magnetic induction are divergence-free. It is desirable that the discrete solutions should also satisfy divergence-free conditions exactly especially for the momentum equations. Inspired by constrained transport method,we devise a new stable mixed finite element method that can achieve the goal. We also prove the well-posedness of the discrete solutions. To solve the resulting linear algebraic equations, we propose a GMRE…
We consider a mixed hybrid finite element formulation for coupled poromechanics. A stabilization strategy based on a macro-element approach is advanced to eliminate the spurious pressure modes appearing in undrained/incompressible conditions. The efficient solution of the stabilized mixed hybrid block system is addressed by developing a class of block triangular preconditioners based on a Schur-complement approximation strategy. Robustness, computational efficiency and scalability of the proposed approach are theoretically discussed and tested using challenging benchmark problems on massively …
