Results on asymptotic characteristics of classes of functions with mixed smoothness are obtained in the paper. Our main interest is in estimating the Kolmogorov widths of classes with small mixed smoothness. We prove the corresponding bounds for the unit balls of the trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from a hyperbolic cross. We demonstrate how our results on the Kolmogorov widths imply new upper bounds for the optimal sampling recovery in the $L_2$ norm of functions with small mixed smoothness.
In this paper we present results on asymptotic characteristics of multivariate function classes in the uniform norm. Our main interest is the approximation of functions with mixed smoothness parameter not larger than $1/2$. Our focus will be on the behavior of the best $m$-term trigonometric approximation as well as the decay of Kolmogorov and entropy numbers in the uniform norm. It turns out that these quantities share a few fundamental abstract properties like their behavior under real interpolation, such that they can be treated simultaneously. We start with proving estimates on finite rank…
We prove that the optimal error of recovery in the $L_2$ norm of functions from a class $\bF$ can be bounded above by the value of the Kolmogorov width of $\bF$ in the uniform norm. We demonstrate on a number of examples of $\bF$ from classes of functions with mixed smoothness that the obtained inequality provides a powerful tool for estimating errors of optimal recovery.
Exact Jackson-type inequalities are obtained in terms of best approximations and averaged values of generalized moduli of smoothness in the spaces ${\mathcal S}^p$. The values of Kolmogorov, Bernstein, linear, and projective widths in the spaces ${\mathcal S}^p$ are found for classes of periodic functions defined by certain conditions on the averaged values of the generalized moduli of smoothness.
In this paper we study the sampling recovery problem for certain relevant multivariate function classes which are not compactly embedded into $L_\infty$. Recent tools relating the sampling numbers to the Kolmogorov widths in the uniform norm are therefore not applicable. In a sense, we continue the research on the small smoothness problem by considering "very" small smoothness in the context of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces with dominating mixed regularity. There is not much known on the recovery of such functions except of an old result by Oswald in the univariate situation. As a first st…
Kolmogorov famously proved that multivariate continuous functions can be represented as a superposition of a small number of univariate continuous functions, $$ f(x_1,\dots,x_n) = \sum_{q=0}^{2n+1} χ^q \left( \sum_{p=1}^n ψ^{pq}(x_p) \right).$$ Fridman \cite{fridman} posed the best smoothness bound for the functions $ψ^{pq}$, that such functions can be constructed to be Lipschitz continuous with constant 1. Previous algorithms to describe these inner functions have only been Hölder continuous, such as those proposed by Köppen and Braun and Griebel. This is problematic, as pointed out by Griebe…
We consider the problem of the uniform (in $L_\infty$) recovery of ridge functions $f(x)=φ(\langle a,x\rangle)$, $x\in B_2^n$, using noisy evaluations $y_1\approx f(x^1),\ldots,y_N\approx f(x^N)$. It is known that for classes of functions $φ$ of finite smoothness the problem suffers from the curse of dimensionality: in order to provide good accuracy for the recovery it is necessary to make exponential number of evaluations. We prove that if $φ$ is analytic in a neighborhood of $[-1,1]$ and the noise is very small, $\varepsilon\le\exp(-c\log^2n)$, then there is an efficient algorithm that recov…
Let $0<p,q\leq \infty$ and denote by $\mathcal S_p^N$ and $\mathcal S_q^N$ the corresponding Schatten classes of real $N\times N$ matrices. We study approximation quantities of natural identities $\mathcal S_p^N\hookrightarrow \mathcal S_q^N$ between Schatten classes and prove asymptotically sharp bounds up to constants only depending on $p$ and $q$, showing how approximation numbers are intimately related to the Gelfand numbers and their duals, the Kolmogorov numbers. In particular, we obtain new bounds for those sequences of $s$-numbers. Our results improve and complement bounds previously o…
In the Musielak-Orlicz type spaces ${\mathcal S}_{\bf M}$, exact Jackson-type inequalities are obtained in terms of best approximations of functions and the averaged values of their generalized moduli of smoothness. The values of Kolmogorov, Bernstein, linear, and projective widths in ${\mathcal S}_{\bf M}$ are found for classes of periodic functions defined by certain conditions on the averaged values of the generalized moduli of smoothness.
Function values are, in some sense, "almost as good" as general linear information for $L_2$-approximation (optimal recovery, data assimilation) of functions from a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. This was recently proved by new upper bounds on the sampling numbers under the assumption that the singular values of the embedding of this Hilbert space into $L_2$ are square-summable. Here we mainly prove new lower bounds. In particular we prove that the sampling numbers behave worse than the approximation numbers for Sobolev spaces with small smoothness. Hence there can be a logarithmic gap also…

We tensorize the Faber spline system from [14] to prove sequence space isomorphisms for multivariate function spaces with higher mixed regularity. The respective basis coefficients are local linear combinations of discrete function values similar as for the classical Faber Schauder system. This allows for a sparse representation of the function using a truncated series expansion by only storing discrete (finite) set of function values. The set of nodes where the function values are taken depends on the respective function in a non-linear way. Indeed, if we choose the basis functions adaptively…
We continue the research on the asymptotic and preasymptotic decay of singular numbers for tensor product Hilbert-Sobolev type embeddings in high dimensions with special emphasis on the influence of the underlying dimension $d$. The main focus in this paper lies on tensor products involving univariate Sobolev type spaces with different smoothness. We study the embeddings into $L_2$ and $H^1$. In other words, we investigate the worst-case approximation error measured in $L_2$ and $H^1$ when only $n$ linear samples of the function are available. Recent progress in the field shows that accurate b…
