The paper focuses on a new error analysis of a class of mixed FEMs for stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with the standard inf-sup stable velocity-pressure space pairs to Navier-Stokes equations and the Nédélec's edge element for the magnetic field. The methods have been widely used in various numerical simulations in the last several decades, while the existing analysis is not optimal due to the strong coupling of system and the pollution of the lower-order Nédélec's edge approximation in analysis. In terms of a newly modified Maxwell projection we establish new and optimal error estimates. In particular, we prove that the method based on the commonly-used Taylor-Hood/lowest-order Nédélec's edge element is efficient and the method provides the second-order accuracy for numerical velocity. Two numerical examples for the problem in both convex and nonconvex polygonal domains are presented. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis.
We propose and analyse a hybrid high-order (HHO) scheme for stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. The scheme has an arbitrary order of accuracy and is applicable on generic polyhedral meshes. For sources that are small enough, we prove error estimates in energy norm for the velocity and magnetic field, and $L^2$-norm for the pressure; these estimates are fully robust with respect to small faces, and of optimal order with respect to the mesh size. Using compactness techniques, we also prove that the scheme converges to a solution of the continuous problem, irrespective of th…
Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is a continuum level model for conducting fluids subject to external magnetic fields, e.g. plasmas and liquid metals. The efficient and robust solution of the MHD system poses many challenges due to it's nonlinear, non self-adjoint, and highly coupled nature. In this paper, we develop a robust and accurate a posteriori error estimate for the numerical solution of the MHD equations based on the exact penalty method. The error estimate also isolates particular contributions of error in a quantity of interest (QoI) to inform discretization choices to arrive at accurate …
This paper presents a Crank-Nicolson leap-frog (CNLF) scheme for the unsteady incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The spatial discretization adopts the Galerkin finite element method (FEM), and the temporal discretization employs the CNLF method for linear terms and the semi-implicit method for nonlinear terms. The first step uses Stokes style's scheme, the second step employs the Crank-Nicolson extrapolation scheme, and others apply the CNLF scheme. We testify that the fully discrete scheme is stable and convergent when the time step is less than or equal to a positive consta…
We revise the structure-preserving finite element method in [K. Hu, Y. MA and J. Xu. (2017) Stable finite element methods preserving $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{B}=0$ exactly for MHD models. Numer. Math.,135, 371-396]. The revised method is semi-implicit in time-discretization. We prove the linearized scheme preserves the divergence free property for the magnetic field exactly at each time step. Further, we showed the linearized scheme is unconditionally stable and we obtain optimal convergence in the energy norm of the revised method even for solutions with low regularity.
We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We nume…

A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
We propose a mixed finite element method for Stokes flow with one degree of freedom per element and facet of simplicial grids. The method is derived by considering the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation and eliminating the vorticity locally through the use of a quadrature rule. The discrete solution is pointwise divergence-free and the method is pressure robust. The theoretically derived convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.
Within the last years pressure robust methods for the discretization of incompressible fluids have been developed. These methods allow the use of standard finite elements for the solution of the problem while simultaneously removing a spurious pressure influence in the approximation error of the velocity of the fluid, or the displacement of an incompressible solid. To this end, reconstruction operators are utilized mapping discretely divergence free functions to divergence free functions. This work shows that the modifications proposed for Stokes equation by Linke (2014) also yield gradient ro…
In this paper, we propose and analyze an abstract stabilized mixed finite element framework that can be applied to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems. In the abstract stabilized framework, we prove that any mixed finite element method that satisfies the discrete inf-sup condition can be modified so that it is stable and optimal convergent as long as the mixed continuous problem is stable. Furthermore, we apply the abstract stabilized framework to nonlinear incompressible elasticity problems and present numerical experiments to verify the theoretical results.
Wormhole propagation plays a very important role in the product enhancement of oil and gas reservoir. A new combined hybrid mixed finite element method is proposed to solve incompressible wormhole propagation problem with discontinuous Galerkin finite element procedure, in which, the new hybrid mixed finite element algorithm is established for pressure equation, while the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is considered for concentration equation, and then the porosity function is computed straightly by the approximate value of the concentration. This new combined method can keep loc…
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
We introduce conformal mixed finite element methods for $2$D and $3$D incompressible nonlinear elasticity in terms of displacement, displacement gradient, the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor, and pressure, where finite elements for the $\mathrm{curl}$ and the $\mathrm{div}$ operators are used to discretize strain and stress, respectively. These choices of elements follow from the strain compatibility and the momentum balance law. Some inf-sup conditions are derived to study the stability of methods. By considering $96$ choices of simplicial finite elements of degree less than or equal to $…
Analysis of Galerkin-mixed FEMs for incompressible miscible flow in porous media has been investigated extensively in the last several decades. Of particular interest in practical applications is the lowest-order Galerkin-mixed method, { in which a linear Lagrange FE approximation is used for the concentration and the lowest-order Raviart-Thomas FE approximation is used for the velocity/pressure. The previous works only showed the first-order accuracy of the method in $L^2$-norm in spatial direction,} which however is not optimal and valid only under certain extra restrictions on both time ste…

We construct finite element methods for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system that precisely preserve magnetic and cross helicity, the energy law and the magnetic Gauss law at the discrete level. The variables are discretized as discrete differential forms in a de Rham complex. We present numerical tests to show the performance of the algorithm.
Maintaining conservation laws in the fully discrete setting is critical for accurate long-time behavior of numerical simulations and requires accounting for discrete conservation properties in both space and time. This paper derives arbitrary order finite element exterior calculus spatial discretizations for the two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes and drift-reduced magnetohydrodynamic equations that conserve both energy and enstrophy to machine precision when coupled with generally symplectic time-integration methods. Both continuous and discontinuous-Galerkin (DG) weak formulations can ensure …
The favored phase field method (PFM) has encountered challenges in the finite strain fracture modeling of nearly or truly incompressible hyperelastic materials. We identified that the underlying cause lies in the innate contradiction between incompressibility and smeared crack opening. Drawing on the stiffness-degradation idea in PFM, we resolved this contradiction through loosening incompressible constraint of the damaged phase without affecting the incompressibility of intact material. By modifying the perturbed Lagrangian approach, we derived a novel mixed formulation. In numerical aspects,…
A new family of mixed finite element methods$-$compatible-strain mixed finite element methods (CSFEMs)$-$are introduced for three-dimensional compressible and incompressible nonlinear elasticity. A Hu-Washizu-type functional is extremized in order to obtain a mixed formulation for nonlinear elasticity. The independent fields of the mixed formulations are the displacement, the displacement gradient, and the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress. A pressure-like field is also introduced in the case of incompressible elasticity. We define the displacement in $H^1$, the displacement gradient in $H(curl)$, …
