We propose a simple method for deriving the constraints of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley model in the metric and the Lagrangian formulation, as possible as keeping the Lorentz covariance. In our formulation, it is not necessary to use the Hamilton analysis, the vielbein formulation, nor the Stuckelberg trick for showing the Boulwer-Deser ghost-freeness. It realizes the Lorentz covariant expressions of the constraints in a certain parameter region.
We present locally scale (Weyl) covariant generalisation of Minimal Massive Gravity theory using the language of exterior differential forms on Riemann-Cartan-Weyl space-times. The theory is expressed by a locally scale invariant action and locally scale covariant field equations are found by a first order variational formalism.
We discuss locally Weyl (scale) covariant generalisations of gravitational theories using Riemann-Cartan-Weyl space-times in arbitrary dimensions. We demonstrate the procedure of Weyl gauging on two examples in particular: General relativity, and topologically massive gravity in three dimensions.
We derive a coordinate-independent formulation of the post-1-Newtonian approximation to general relativity. This formulation is a generalization of the Newton-Cartan geometric formulation of Newtonian gravity. It involves several fields and a connection, but no spacetime metric at the fundamental level. We show that the usual coordinate-dependent equations of post-Newtonian gravity are recovered when one specializes to asymptotically flat spacetimes and to appropriate classes of coordinates.
In our previous paper, we have presented a covariant BRST quantization of unimodular gravity which may account for the smallness of the cosmological constant, and have shown that the physical degrees of freedom in the theory are the same as general relativity. The formulation has been given by using rank-2 antisymmetric tensor fields for both ghosts and antighosts. Here we give an alternative formulation using a vector field for the antighost but keeping the same structure for the ghosts. This gives a significantly simpler covariant quantization with less ghosts and no tripole modes in the gho…
We perform a covariant constraint analysis of massive gravity valid for its entire parameter space, demonstrating that the model generically propagates five degrees of freedom; this is also verified by a new and streamlined Hamiltonian description. The constraint's covariant expression permits computation of the model's caustics. Although new features such as the dynamical Riemann tensor appear in the characteristic matrix, the model still exhibits the pathologies uncovered in earlier work: superluminality and likely acausalities.
A covariant formulation for the Newton-Hooke particle is presented by following an algorithm developed by us \cite{BMM1, BMM2, BMM3}. It naturally leads to a coupling with the Newton-Cartan geometry. From this result we provide an understanding of gravitation in a Newtonian geometric background. Using Dirac's constrained analysis a canonical formulation for the Newton-Hooke covariant action is done in both gauge independent and gauge fixed approaches. While the former helps in identifying the various symmetries of the model, the latter is able to define the physical variables. From this analys…
We apply the 1+1+2 covariant approach to describe a general static and spherically symmetric relativistic stellar object which contains two interacting fluids. We then use the 1+1+2 equations to derive the corresponding Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations in covariant form in the isotropic, non-interacting case. These equations are used to obtain new exact solutions by means of direct resolution and reconstruction techniques. Finally, we show that the generating theorem known for the single fluid case can also be used to obtain two-fluid solutions from single fluid ones.
Using our recent proposal for defining gauge invariant averages we give a general-covariant formulation of the so-called cosmological "backreaction". Our effective covariant equations allow us to describe in explicitly gauge invariant form the way classical or quantum inhomogeneities affect the average evolution of our Universe.
We construct a theory of particles moving in curved both momentum space and spacetime, being a generalization of Relative Locality. We find that in order to construct such theory, with desired symmetries, including the general coordinate invariance, we have to use non local position variables. It turns out that free particles move on geodesics and momentum dependent translations of Relative Locality are replaced with momentum dependent geodesic deviations.
We show that the reformulation of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity theory using vielbeins leads to a very simple and covariant way to count constraints, and hence degrees of freedom. Our method singles out a subset of theories, in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley family, where an extra constraint, needed to eliminate the Boulware Deser ghost, is easily seen to appear. As a side result, we also introduce a new method, different from the Stuckelberg trick, to extract kinetic terms for the polarizations propagating in addition to those of the massless graviton.
Dilaton gravity with general brane localized interactions is investigated. Models with corrections up to arbitrary order in field derivatives are considered. Effective gravitational equations of motion at the brane are derived in the covariant approach. Dependence of such brane equations on the bulk quantities is discussed. It is shown that the number of the bulk independent brane equations of motion depends strongly on the symmetries assumed for the model and for the background. Examples with two and four derivatives of the fields are presented in more detail.
We discuss the covariant formulation of local field theories described by the Companion Lagrangian associated with p-branes. The covariantisation is shown to be useful for clarifying the geometrical meaning of the field equations and also their relation to the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the standard Dirac-Born-Infeld theory.
We present new covariant phase space formulations of superparticles moving on a group manifold, deriving the fundamental Poisson brackets and current algebras. We show how these formulations naturally generalise to the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino-Witten models.
We discuss the no-ghost theorem in the massive gravity in a covariant manner. Using the BRST formalism and Stückelberg fields, we first clarify how the Boulware-Deser ghost decouples in the massive gravity theory with Fierz-Pauli mass term. Here we find that the crucial point in the proof is that there is no higher (time) derivative for the Stückelberg `scalar' field. We then analyze the nonlinear massive gravity proposed by de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley, and show that there is no ghost for general admissible backgrounds. In this process, we find a very nontrivial decoupling limit for general …
A possible avenue towards the covariant formulation of the bosonic Matrix Theory is explored. The approach is guided by the known covariant description of the bosonic membrane. We point out various problems with this particular covariantization scheme, stemming from the central question of how to enlarge the original U(N) symmetry of Matrix Theory while preserving all of its essential features in the infinite momentum frame.
Unimodular gravity (UG) is an interesting theory that may explain why the cosmological constant is extremely small, in contrast to general relativity (GR). The theory has only the transverse diffeomorphism invariance and this causes lots of debate as to the equivalence of UG to GR in the covariant quantization. We study the covariant BRST quantization of UG by gauge fixing only the transverse diffeomorphism and show that the remaining physical degrees of freedom are two, the same number as GR. This is achieved by using antisymmetric tensor ghost fields which automatically satisfy the transvers…
An explicit Lorentz covariant formulation of the canonical theory for classical fields is established on a space-like hypersurface. Hamilton's equations and a Poisson bracket are defined on the space-like hypersurface. The Poisson bracket relations between total momentum and total angular momentum satisfies the Poincar{é} algebra. It is shown that our Poisson bracket has the same symplectic structure that was brought in the covariant symplectic approach.
We investigate the covariant formulation of Chern-Simons theories in a general odd dimension which can be obtained by introducing a vacuum connection field as a reference. Field equations, Noether currents and superpotentials are computed so that results are easily compared with the well-known results in dimension 3. Finally we use this covariant formulation of Chern-Simons theories to investigate their relation with topological BF theories.
Parametrized field theories, which are generally covariant versions of ordinary field theories, are studied from the point of view of the covariant phase space: the space of solutions of the field equations equipped with a canonical (pre)symplectic structure. Motivated by issues arising in general relativity, we focus on: phase space representations of the spacetime diffeomorphism group, construction of observables, and the relationship between the canonical and covariant phase spaces.
We study the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in dual formulation. Essentially, the construction is the PST-covariantisation and nonlinearisation of Zwanziger action. The covariantisation made use of three auxiliary scalar fields. Apart from these, the construction proceed in a similar way to that of the standard formulation. For example, the theories can be extended to include interactions with external fields, and that the theories possess two local PST symmetries. We then explicitly demonstrate the construction of covariant nonlinear duality-symmetric actions in…
We will establish the connection between the Lorentz covariant and so-called single-time formulation for the quark Wigner operator. To this end we will discuss the initial value problem for the Wigner operator of a field theory and give a discussion of the gauge-covariant formulation for the Wigner operator including some new results concerning the chiral limit. We discuss the gradient or semi-classical expansion and the color and spinor decomposition of the equations of motion for the Wigner operator. The single-time formulation will be derived from the covariant formulation by taking energy …
Covariantly we reformulate the description of a spinning particle in terms of the Poincaré group. We also construct a Lagrangian which entails all possible constraints explicitly; all constraints can be obtained just from the Lagrangian. Furthermore, in this covariant reformulation, the Lorentz element is to be considered to evolve the momentum or spin component from an arbitrary fixed frame and not just from the particle rest frame. In distinction with the usual formulation, our system is directly comparable with the pseudo-classical formulation. We get a peculiar symmetry which resembles the…
We show that the symplectic current obtained from the boundary term, which arises in the first variation of a local diffeomorphism invariant action, is covariantly conserved for any gravity theory described by that action. Therefore, a Poincare invariant 2-form can be constructed on the phase space, which is shown to be closed without reference to a specific theory. Finally, we show that one can obtain a charge expression for gravity theories in various dimensions, which plays the role of the Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) charge for spacetimes with non-constant curvature backgrounds, by using the d…
We explore topologically massive gauge theories using the covariant colour kinematics duality recently introduced by Cheung and Mangan. We show that the massive bi-adjoint scalar field is simply related to topologically massive gauge theory by the duality, and that enacting the same duality on the gauge theory produces topologically massive gravity coupled to a scalar or, equivalently, an antisymmetric field. We also show that different choices for the replacement of the colour structure constants with kinematic structure constants lead to different theories, including a topologically massive …
In this paper, we construct a single Lagrangian for both limits of Galilean electrodynamics. The framework relies on a covariant formalism used in describing Newton-Cartan geometry. We write down the Galilean conformal algebra and its representation in this formalism. We also show that the Lagrangian is invariant under the Galilean conformal algebra in d = 4 and calculate the energy-momentum tensor.
On the basis of the covariant description of the canonical formalism for quantization, we present the basic elements of the symplectic geometry for a restricted class of topological defects propagating on a curved background spacetime. We discuss the future extensions of the present results.
A manifestly Lorentz invariant effective action for Yang-Mills theory depending only on commuting fields is constructed. This action posesses a bosonic symmetry, which plays a role analogous to the BRST symmetry in the standard formalism.
The osp(1,2)-covariant Lagrangian quantization of general gauge theories is formulated which applies also to massive fields. The formalism generalizes the Sp(2)-covariant BLT approach and guarantees symplectic invariance of the quantized action. The dependence of the generating functional of Green's functions on the choice of gauge in the massive case disappears in the limit m = 0. Ward identities related to osp(1,2) symmetry are derived. Massive gauge theories with closed algebra are studied as an example.
We describe a canonical covariant formulation of the Green-Schwarz Superstring which allows the construction of a new covariant action canonically equivalent to the Green-Schwarz action but subjected only to first class constraints. From this action the correct BRST operator for the quantization of the Green-Schwarz Superstring may be constructed. Also the gauge fixed action in the Light-Cone gauge may be reobtained. The action presented in this letter generalizes in a non-trivial form the action introduced by Kallosh for the Brink-Schwarz-Casalbuoni Superparticle.
We present the covariant symplectic structure of the Topologically Massive Gravity and find a compact expression for the conserved charges of generic spacetimes with Killing symmetries.
The covariant Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of Maxwell's equations is derived from the first-order (Palatini-like) Lagrangian using the analysis of constraints within the De~Donder-Weyl covariant Hamiltonian formalism and the corresponding polysymplectic reduction.
Covariant forms are given to a gauge theory of massive tensor field. This is accomplished by introducing another auxiliary field of scalar type to the system composed of a symmetric tensor field and an auxiliary field of vector type. The situation is compared to the case of the theory in which a tensor field describes a scalar ghost as well as an ordinary massive tensor. In this case only an auxiliary vector field is needed to give covariant expressions for the gauge theory.
Coupling the galileons to a curved background has been a tradeoff between maintaining second order equations of motion, maintaining the galilean shift symmetries, and allowing the background metric to be dynamical. We propose a construction which can achieve all three for a novel class of galilean invariant models, by coupling a scalar with the galilean symmetry to a massive graviton. This generalizes the brane construction for galileons, by adding to the brane a dynamical metric, (non-universally) interacting with the galileon field. Alternatively, it can be thought of as an extension of the …
A covariant description of the canonical theory for interacting classical fields is developed on a space-like hypersurface. An identity invariant under the canonical transformations is obtained. The identity follows a canonical equation in which the interaction Hamiltonian density genarates a deformation of the space-like hypersurface. The equation just corresponds to the Yang-Feldman equation in the Heisenberg pictures in quantum field theory.
It is shown that Schwarzschild black hole and de Sitter solutions exist as exact solutions of a recently proposed relativistic covariant formulation of (power-counting) renormalizable gravity with a fluid. The formulation without a fluid is also presented here. The stability of the solutions is studied and their corresponding entropies are computed, by using the covariant Wald method. The area law is shown to hold both for the Schwarzschild and for the de Sitter solutions found, confirming that, for the $β=1$ case, one is dealing with a minimal modification of GR.
We construct an explicit covariant Majorana formulation of Maxwell electromagnetism which does not make use of vector 4-potential. This allows to write a ``Dirac'' equation for the photon containing all the known properties of it. In particular, the spin and (intrinsic) boost matrices are derived and the helicity properties of the photon are studied.
We show that the well-known problem of frame dependence and violation of local Lorentz invariance in the usual formulation of $f(T)$ gravity is a consequence of neglecting the role of spin connection. We re-formulate $f(T)$ gravity starting, instead of the "pure-tetrad" teleparallel gravity, from the covariant teleparallel gravity, using both the tetrad and the spin connection as dynamical variables, resulting in the fully covariant, consistent, and frame-independent, version of $f(T)$ gravity, which does not suffer from the notorious problems of the usual, pure-tetrad, $f(T)$ theory. We prese…
Numerical integration of the field equations in bimetric relativity is necessary to obtain solutions describing realistic systems. Thus, it is crucial to recast the equations as a well-posed problem. In general relativity, under certain assumptions, the covariant BSSN formulation is a strongly hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations, hence its Cauchy problem is well-posed. In this paper, we establish the covariant BSSN formulation of the bimetric field equations. It shares many features with the corresponding formulation in general relativity, but there are a few fundamental differenc…
The three-dimensional noncommutative supersymmetric QED is investigated within the superfield approach. We prove the absence of UV/IR mixing in the theory at any loop order and demonstrate its one-loop finiteness.
We propose a supersymmetric model that defines M-theory. It possesses SO(1, 10) super Poincare symmetry and is constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. This model is a supersymmetric generalization of the model in arXiv:0902.1333. From our model, we derive BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate BPS vacua.
We use covariant phase space methods to study the metric and tetrad formulations of General Relativity in a manifold with boundary and compare the results obtained in both approaches. Proving their equivalence has been a long-lasting problem that we solve here by using the cohomological approach provided by the relative bicomplex framework. This setting provides a clean and ambiguity-free way to describe the solution spaces and associated symplectic structures. We also compute several relevant charges in both schemes and show that they are equivalent, as expected.
We study Barut's covariant equations describing the electromagnetic interactions between N spin-1/2 particles. In the covariant formulation each particle is described by a Dirac spinor. It is assumed that the interactions between the particles are not mediated by a bosonic field (direct interactions). Within this formulation, using the Lagrangian formalism, we derive the approximate (semirelativistic) Breit equation for two interacting spin-1/2 particles.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the covariant canonical formalism of $F(R)$ gravity in Einstein frame. We also find canonical transformation between covariant canonical formulation of F(R) gravity in Jordan frame and Einstein frames and we also determine corresponding generating function.
We developed a gauge-covariant formulation of the non-equilibrium Green function method for the dynamical and/or non-uniform electromagnetic field by means of the deformational quantization method. Such a formulation is realized by replacing the Moyal product in the so-called Wigner space by the star product, and facilitates the order-by-order calculation of a gauge-invariant observable in terms of the electromagnetic field. An application of this formalism to the linear response theory is discussed.
The problem of the restoring of the equivalence between Light-Front (LF) Hamiltonian and conventional Lorentz-covariant formulations of gauge theory is solved for QED(1+1) and (perturbatively to all orders) for QCD(3+1). For QED(1+1) the LF Hamiltonian is constructed which reproduces the results of Lorentz-covariant theory. This is achieved by bosonization of the model and by analysing the resulting bosonic theory to all orders in the fermion mass. For QCD(3+1) we describe nonstandard regularization that allows to restore mentioned equivalence with finite number of counterterms in LF Hamiltoni…
The osp(1,2)-covariant Lagrangian quantization of irreducible gauge theories [hep-th/9712204] is generalized to L-stage reducible theories. The dependence of the generating functional of Green's functions on the choice of gauge in the massive case is dicussed and Ward identities related to osp(1,2) symmetry are given. Massive first stage theories with closed gauge algebra are studied in detail. The generalization of the Chapline-Manton model and topological Yang-Mills theory to the case of massive fields is consedered as examples.
A systematic scheme is developed for solving conformal algebra of the massive vertex operators in the old covariant first quantized string theory. Using the first massive level in the covariant spectrum of bosonic open string theory in flat space-time as an example, we explicitly verify the conformal algebra for the normal-ordered covariant vertex operator. We emphasize that the requirement of fully covariant gauge-fixing specifies the form of normal-ordering for massive vertex operators.
We propose the bosonic part of an action that defines M-theory. It possesses manifest SO(1, 10) symmetry and constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. From our action, we derive the bosonic sector of BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate vacua. We also discuss an interaction with fermions.
The Stückelberg analysis of nonlinear massive gravity in the presence of a general fiducial metric is investigated. We develop a "covariant" formalism for the Stückelberg expansion by working with a local inertial frame, through which helicity modes can be characterized correctly. Within this covariant approach, an extended $Λ_3$ decoupling limit analysis can be consistently performed, which keeps $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}/m^2$ fixed with $\bar{R}_{μνρσ}$ the Riemann tensor of the fiducial metric. In this extended decoupling limit, the scalar mode $π$ acquires self-interactions due to the presence of th…
A general family of charge-current carrying cosmic string models is investigated. In the special case of circular configurations in arbitrary axially symmetric gravitational and electromagnetic backgrounds the dynamics is determined by simple point particle Hamiltonians. A certain "duality" transformation relates our results to previous ones, obtained by Carter et. al., for an infinitely long open stationary string in an arbitrary stationary background.
We study the statistical mechanics of a general Hamiltonian system in the context of symplectic structure of the corresponding phase space. This covariant formalism reveals some interesting correspondences between properties of the phase space and the associated statistical physics. While topology, as a global property, turns out to be related to the total number of microstates, the invariant measure which assigns {\it a priori} probability distribution over the microstates, is determined by the local form of the symplectic structure. As an example of a model for which the phase space has a no…
The scalar fields of supersymmetric models are coordinates of a geometric space. We propose a formulation of supersymmetry that is covariant with respect to reparametrizations of this target space. Employing chiral multiplets as an example, we introduce modified supersymmetry variations and redefined auxiliary fields that transform covariantly under reparametrizations. The resulting action and transformation laws are manifestly covariant and highlight the geometric structure of the supersymmetric theory. The covariant methods are developed first for general theories (not necessarily supersymme…
We undertake a complete and covariant treatment for the quadratic Lagrangian of all of the degrees of freedom of massive gravity with a fixed flat fiducial metric for arbitrary massive gravity parameters around any isotropic self-accelerating background solution. Generically, 3 out of 4 Stuckelberg degrees of freedom propagate in addition to the usual 2 tensor degrees of freedom of general relativity. The complete kinetic structure typically is only revealed at an order in the graviton mass that is equivalently to retaining curvature terms in a locally flat expansion. These results resolve sev…
In the present article we analyze the matter-geometry coupled $f(Q,T)$ theory of gravity. We offer the fully covariant formulation of the theory, with which we construct the correct energy balance equation and employ it to conduct a dynamical system analysis in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We consider three different functional forms of the $f(Q,T)$ function, specifically, $f(Q,T)=αQ+ βT$, $f(Q,T)=αQ+ βT^2$, and $f(Q,T)=Q+ αQ^2+ βT$ . We attempt to investigate the physical capabilities of these models to describe various cosmological epochs. We calculate Frie…
In this note we analyze the BPS black hole equations in extended supergravities and we find two interesting relations involving first and second derivatives of combinations of the central charges. One relation is a new identity that solely relies on the geometric properties of the scalar manifolds of extended supergravity theories. The other relation is a generalization of a scalar weak gravity conjecture relation conjectured by Palti and uses properties of the underlying black hole solution. We also provide for the first time an explicit covariant construction of the BPS squared action for su…
