A systematic scheme is developed for solving conformal algebra of the massive vertex operators in the old covariant first quantized string theory. Using the first massive level in the covariant spectrum of bosonic open string theory in flat space-time as an example, we explicitly verify the conformal algebra for the normal-ordered covariant vertex operator. We emphasize that the requirement of fully covariant gauge-fixing specifies the form of normal-ordering for massive vertex operators.
We consider Polyakov theory of Bosonic strings in conformal gauge which are used to study conformal anomaly. However it exhibits ghost number anomaly. We show how this anomaly can be avoided by connecting this theory to that of in background covariant harmonic gauge which is known to be free from conformal and ghost number current anomaly, by using suitably constructed finite field dependent BRST transformation.
We consider a two-dimensional conformal field theory which contains two kinds of the bosonic degrees of freedom. Two linear dilaton fields enable us to study a more general case. Various properties of the model such as OPEs, central charge, conformal properties of the fields and associated algebras will be studied.
Free Lagrangians are found both for gauge and non-gauge bosonic conformal fields of any symmetry type and in any space-time dimension. Conformal gauge fields of various types, their gauge transformations and gauge invariant field strengths (generalized Weyl tensors), which are derived by the $σ_-$ cohomology technics in the frame-like formulation, are shown to correspond to supersymmetric vacua of certain supersymmetric matrix mechanics. The correspondence between conformal and $AdS_d$ higher-spin models, that turn out to have identical generalized Weyl tensors, is discussed.
In two recent preprints (hep-th/9710131 and hep-th/9710132), Abe and Nakanishi have claimed that the proof of the gauge independence of the conformal anomaly of the bosonic string as given by us in 1988 was wrong. A similar allegation has been made concerning our proof of the gauge independence of the sum of the ghost number and Lagrange multiplier anomalies in non-conformal gauges. In this short note we refute their criticism by explaining the simple logic of our proofs and emphasizing the points that have been missed by Abe and Nakanishi.
Kraemmer and Rebhan claimed the gauge independence of the conformal anomaly of bosonic string for various gauge fixings in the framework of the perturbation theory of two-dimensional quantum gravity. It is pointed out that their proof is wrong. The gauge independence is proved for the gauge-fixings which reduce to the linearized de Donder gauge in the flat limit of the background metric. Similar remarks are made also for the Rebhan-Kraemmer current anomaly.
The operator formalism of the first quantized string theory is applied to the stringy excitations in the linear dilaton background. In particular, the normal-ordered vertex operators in the old-covariant spectrum of the bosonic open string, which correspond to the physical state solutions of the Virasoro constraints, are shown to satisfy the conformal algebra. Tree-level scattering amplitudes among different stringy states are computed using the coherent-state method and the modified inner product of the Hilbert space. Decoupling of the zero-norm states, i.e., the on-shell stringy Ward identit…
Conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative (ordinary-derivative) formulation for such fields is developed. We obtain gauge invariant Lagrangian and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries on conformal gauge fields is obtained. Modified de Donder gauge condition and de Donder-Stueckelberg gauge condition are introduced. Using the de Donder-Stueckelberg g…
We show that Witten's two-dimensional string black hole metric is exactly conformally invariant in the supersymmetric case. We also demonstrate that this metric, together with a recently proposed exact metric for the bosonic case, are respectively consistent with the supersymmetric and bosonic $σ$-model conformal invariance conditions up to four-loop order.
We classify all the Heisenberg and conformal vectors and determine the full automorphism group of the free bosonic vertex algebra without gradation. To describe it we introduce a notion of inner automorphisms of a vertex algebra.
We factorize 4d Fradkin-Linetsky higher spin conformal algebra by maximal ideal $I^1-α$ and construct irreducible infinite-dimensional modules $M_α$ of 4d conformal algebra that are parameterized by real number $α$. It is shown that independently of $α$ unfolded system of equations corresponding to each $M_α$ describes collection of Fradkin-Tseytlin equations for all spins $s=1,\dots,\infty$ with zero multiplicity.
We revisit the construction of the 2d conformal blocks of primary operator four-point functions as bilocal vertex operator correlators. We find an additional interpretation as a path integral over the reparametrizations of an intermediate cylinder. As a consequence we bridge the gap between the Kähler quantization of virasoro coadjoint orbits, $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory and the reparametrization formalism of 2d CFT that has made an appearance in recent literature.
We construct the free field representation of irregular vertex operators of arbitrary rank which generates simultaneous eigenstates of positive modes of Virasoro and W symmetry generators. The irregular vertex operators turn out to be the exponentials of combinations of derivatives of Liouville or Toda fields, creating irregular coherent states. We compute examples of correlation functions of these operators and study their operator algebra.
The representation theory of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras has grown tremendously since their independent introduction by Robert V. Moody and Victor G. Kac in 1968. Inspired by mathematical structures found by theoretical physicists, and by the desire to understand the ``monstrous moonshine'' of the Monster group, the theory of vertex operator algebras (VOA's) was introduced by Borcherds, Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman. An important subject in this young field is the study of modules for VOA's and intertwining operators between modules. Feingold, Frenkel and Ries defined a structure, called a v…
In this work we present a proof of the discreteness of the spectrum for bosonic membrane, in a flat minkowski space. This may be useful to show the quantum mechanical consistence of others bosonics extended models. This proof includes the BRST residual symmetry and was directly performed over the discretized membrane model. The BRST residual invariant effective action is explicity constructed.
We study chiral vertex operators in the sine-Gordon [SG] theory, viewed as an off-conformal system. We find that these operators, which would have been primary fields in the conformal limit, have interesting and, in some ways, unexpected properties in the SG model. Some of them continue to have scale- invariant dynamics even in the presence of the non-conformal cosine interaction. For instance, it is shown that the Mandelstam operator for the bosonic representation of the Fermi field does {\it not} develop a mass term in the SG theory, contrary to what the real Fermi field in the massive Thirr…
We study systematically the conformal geometry of higher spin bosonic gauge fields in three spacetime dimensions. We recall the definition of the Cotton tensor for higher spins and establish a number of its properties that turn out to be key in solving in terms of prepotentials the constraint equations of the Hamiltonian (3 + 1) formulation of four-dimensional higher spin gauge fields. The prepotentials are shown to exhibit higher spin conformal symmetry. Just as for spins 1 and 2, they provide a remarkably simple, manifestly duality invariant formulation of the theory. While the higher spin c…
We construct supersymmetric irregular vertex operators of arbitrary rank, appearing in the colliding limit of primary fields. We find that the structure of the supersymmetric irregular vertices differs significantly from the bosonic case: upon supersymmetrization, the irregular operators are no longer the eigenstates of positive Virasoro and $W_N$ generators but block-diagonalize them. We relate the block-diagonal structure of the irregular vertices to contributions of the Ramond sector to the colliding limit.
Following [1] we further apply the octonionic structure to supersymmetric D=11 $M$-theory. We consider the octonionic $2^{n+1} \times 2^{n+1}$ Dirac matrices describing the sequence of Clifford algebras with signatures ($9+n,n$) ($n=0,1,2, ...$) and derive the identities following from the octonionic multiplication table. The case $n=1$ ($4\times 4$ octonion-valued matrices) is used for the description of the D=11 octonionic $M$ superalgebra with 52 real bosonic charges; the $n=2$ case ($8 \times 8$ octonion-valued matrices) for the D=11 conformal $M$ algebra with 232 real bosonic charges. The…
In this note, we construct a BRST invariant cubic vertex for massless fields of arbitrary mixed symmetry in flat space-time. The construction is based on the vertex given in bosonic Open String Field Theory. The algebra of gauge transformations is closed without any additional, higher than cubic, couplings due to the presence of an infinite tower of massless fields. We briefly discuss the generalization of this result to a curved space-time and other possible implications.
We construct new large classes of BPS Wilson hyperloops in three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ quiver Chern-Simons-matter theory on $S^3$. The main strategy is to start with the 1/2 BPS Wilson loop of this theory, choose any linear combination of the supercharges it preserves, and look for deformations built out of the matter fields that still preserve that supercharge. This is a powerful generalization of a recently developed approach based on deformations of 1/4 and 1/8 BPS bosonic loops, which itself was far more effective at discovering new operators than older methods relying on complicated an…
The conformal symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian for massless quarks is broken both by renormalization effects and the gauge fixing procedure. Renormalized primitive divergent amplitudes have the property that their form away from the overall coincident point singularity is fully determined by the bare Lagrangian, and scale dependence is restricted to $δ$-functions at the singularity. If gauge fixing could be ignored, one would expect these amplitudes to be conformal invariant for non-coincident points. We find that the one-loop three-gluon vertex function $Γ_{μνρ}(x,y,z)$ is conformal invariant i…
The usual ambient space approach to conformal fields is based on identifying the d-dimensional conformal space as the Dirac projective hypercone in a flat d+2-dimensional ambient space. In this work, we explicitly concentrate on singletons of any integer spin and propose an approach that allows one to have both locality and conformal symmetry manifest. This is achieved by using the ambient space representation in the fiber rather than in spacetime. This approach allows us to characterize a subalgebra of higher symmetries for any bosonic singleton, which is a candidate higher-spin algebra for m…
Vertex operators for the deformed Virasoro algebra are defined, their bosonic representation is constructed and difference equation for the simplest vertex operators is described.
We apply Kadanoff's theory of marginal deformations of conformal field theories to twistfield deformations of Z_2 orbifold models in K3 moduli space. These deformations lead away from the Z_2 orbifold sub-moduli-space and hence help to explore conformal field theories which have not yet been understood. In particular, we calculate the deformation of the conformal dimensions of vertex operators for p^2<1 in second order perturbation theory.
We define the $n$-point function for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface in two separate sewing schemes where either two tori are sewn together or a handle is sewn to one torus. We explicitly obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and lattice vertex operator algebras in both sewing schemes. We prove that the partition functions are holomorphic in the sewing parameters on given suitable domains and describe their modular properties. Finally, we show that the partition functions cannot be equal in the neighborhood o…
The paper consists mainly of two parts. In the first part, we obtain well-defined Killing spinor equations for the low-energy effective action of the bosonic string with the conformal anomaly term. We show that the conformal anomaly term is the only scalar potential that one can add into the action that is consistent with the Killing spinor equations. In the second part, we demonstrate that the Kaluza-Klein theory can be gauged so that the Killing spinors are charged under the Kaluza-Klein vector. This gauging process generates a scalar potential with a maximum that gives rise to an AdS spacet…
We show how an off shell invariance of the massless particle action allows the construction of an extension of the conformal space-time algebra and induces a non-commutative space-time geometry in bosonic and supersymmetric particle theories.
We construct a covariant open bosonic string field theory on multiple D-branes, which reduces to a non-Abelian group Yang-Mills gauge theory in the zero-slope limit. Making use of the first quantized open bosonic string in the proper time gauge, we convert the string amplitudes given by the Polyakov path integrals on string world sheets into those of the second quantized theory. The world sheet diagrams generated by the constructed open string field theory are planar in contrast to those of the Witten's cubic string field theory. However, the constructed string field theory is yet equivalent t…
Recently Kazama and Yokoi (arXiv:0801.1561 [hep-th]) have used a phase-space method to study the Virasoro algebra of type IIB superstring theory in the maximally supersymmetric R-R plane wave background in a semi-light-cone gauge. Two types of normal ordering have been considered, namely "phase space normal ordering" (PNO) and "massless normal ordering" (MNO). The second one, which is the right one to choose in flat background, has been discarded with the argument that the Virasoro algebra closes only in the first case. To understand this issue better with a completely covariant treatment we c…
We define the partition and $n$-point functions for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and for any pair of simple Heisenberg modules. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties for the Heisenberg and lattice vertex operator algebras and a continuous orbifolding of the rank two fermion vertex operator super algebra. We compute the genus two H…
In a previous work, a straightforward canonical approach to the source-free quantum Chern-Simons dynamics was developed. It makes use of neither gauge conditions nor functional integrals and needs only ideas known from QCD and quantum gravity. It gives Witten's conformal edge states in a simple way when the spatial slice is a disc. Here we extend the formalism by including sources as well. The quantum states of a source with a fixed spatial location are shown to be those of a conformal family, a result also discovered first by Witten. The internal states of a source are not thus associated wit…
Using a Hamiltonian approach to gauged WZW models, we present a general method for computing the conformally exact metric and dilaton, to all orders in the $1/k$ expansion, for any bosonic, heterotic, or type-II superstring model based on a coset $G/H$. We prove the following relations: (i) For type-II superstrings the conformally exact metric and dilaton are identical to those of the non-supersymmetric {\it semi-classical} bosonic model except for an overall renormalization of the metric obtained by $k\to k- g$. (ii) The exact expressions for the heterotic superstring are derived from their e…
Based on any chiral vertex operator algebra satisfying a suitable finiteness condition, the semisimplicity of the zero-mode algebra as well as a regularity for induced modules, we construct conformal field theory over the projective line with the chiral vertex operator algebra as symmetries of the theory. We appropriately generalize the argument in [TUY] so that we are able to define sheaves of conformal blocks for chiral vertex operator algebras and study them in detail. We prove the factorization theorem under the fairly general conditions for chiral vertex operator algebras and the zero-mod…
We discuss tachyon configuration for the unoriented bosonic string theory which produces a bosonic string theory with SO(32) gauge symmetry in ten dimensions. It is closely related to the tachyon condensation scenario proposed by A. Sen. We also give the boundary state description of the tachyon condensation process, with some emphasis on the rôle of orbifold conformal field theory.
We fulfill the detailed analysis of coupling the charged bosonic higher spin fields to external constant electromagnetic field in first order in external field strength. Cubic interaction vertex of arbitrary massive and massless bosonic higher spin fields with external field is found. Construction is based on deformation of free Lagrangian and free gauge transformations by terms linear in electromagnetic field strength. In massive case a formulation with Stueckelberg fields is used. We begin with most general form of deformations for Lagrangian and gauge transformations, admissible by Lorentz …
The rank 1 bosonic ghost vertex algebra, also known as the $βγ$ ghosts, symplectic bosons or Weyl vertex algebra, is a simple example of a conformal field theory which is neither rational, nor $C_2$-cofinite. We identify a module category, denoted category $\mathscr{F}$, which satisfies three necessary conditions coming from conformal field theory considerations: closure under restricted duals, closure under fusion and closure under the action of the modular group on characters. We prove the second of these conditions, with the other two already being known. Further, we show that category $\ma…
We discuss solutions of the heterotic string theory which are analogous to bosonic and superstring backgrounds related to coset conformal field theories. A class of exact `left-right symmetric' solutions is obtained by supplementing the metric, antisymmetric tensor and dilaton of the superstring solutions by the gauge field background equal to the generalised Lorentz connection with torsion. As in the superstring case, these backgrounds are $\a'$-independent, i.e. have a `semiclassical' form. The corresponding heterotic string sigma model is obtained from the combination of the (1,0) supersymm…
We investigate whether the symmetry transformations of a bosonic string are connected by T-duality. We start with a standard closed string theory. We continue with a modified open string theory, modified to preserve the symmetry transformations possessed by the closed string theory. Because the string theory is conformally invariant world sheet field theory, in order to find the transformations which preserve the physics, one has to demand the isomorphism between the conformal field theories corresponding to the initial and the transformed field configurations. We find the symmetry transformat…
In the framework of gauge invariant approach involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields, totally symmetric arbitrary spin anomalous conformal current and shadow field in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant differential constraints for such anomalous conformal current and shadow field and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertex of the arbitrary spin anomalous shadow field is also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, the two-point gauge invariant vertex becomes the standard two-point vertex o…
We extend the definition of the refined topological vertex C to an n-coloured refined topological vertex C_n that depends on n free bosons, and compute the 5D strip partition function made of N pairs of C_n vertices and conjugate C*_n vertices. Using geometric engineering and the AGT correspondence, the 4D limit of this strip partition function is identified with a (normalized) matrix element of a (primary state) vertex operator that intertwines two (arbitrary descendant) states in a (generically non-rational) 2D conformal field theory with Z_n parafermion primary states.
In this paper we construct the operator connecting the three vertex in half string field theory and the dual model vertex of Sciuto, Caneshi Schwimmer and Veneziano (SCSV). This construction results in an explicit conformal transformation linking the two interactions in the matter sector at all levels. Thus establishing the equivalence in the matter sector between the two theories at least for N = 3.
We couple the 2D black-hole conformal field theory discovered by Witten to a $D-1$ dimensional Euclidean bosonic string. We demonstrate that the resulting planar (=zero genus) string susceptibility is real for any $0\leq D \leq 4$.
In this work we apply the S-matrix bootstrap maximization program to the 2d bosonic O(N) integrable model which has N species of scalar particles of mass m and no bound states. Since in previous studies theories were defined by maximizing the coupling between particles and their bound states, the main problem appears to be to find what other functional can be used to define this model. Instead, we argue that the defining property of this integrable model is that it resides at a vertex of the convex space determined by the unitarity and crossing constraints. Thus, the integrable model can be fo…
We describe the set of generalized Poincare and conformal superalgebras in D=4,5 and 7 dimensions as two sequences of superalgebraic structures, taking values in the division algebras R, C and H. The generalized conformal superalgebras are described for D=4 by OSp(1;8| R), for D=5 by SU(4,4;1) and for D=7 by U_αU(8;1|H). The relation with other schemes, in particular the framework of conformal spin (super)algebras and Jordan (super)algebras is discussed. By extending the division-algebra-valued superalgebras to octonions we get in D=11 an octonionic generalized Poincare superalgebra, which we …
We test infinite-dimensional extension of algebra su(k,k) proposed by Fradkin and Linetsky as the candidate for conformal higher spin algebra. Adjoint and twisted-adjoint representations of su(k,k) on the space of this algebra are carefully explored. For k=2 corresponding unfolded system is analyzed and it is shown to encode Fradkin-Tseytlin equations for the set of all integer spins 1,2,... with infinite multiplicity.

First, we diagonalize the bc-ghost 3-string Neumann matrices using the technique described in hep-th/0304158. Their eigenvalues are in complete agreement with the previous authors. Second, we diagonalize the N-string gluing vertices for the bosonized ghost system. And third, we verify the descent and associativity relations for the combined bosonic matter+ghost gluing vertices. We find that in order for these relations to be true, the vertices must be normalized by the factor Z_N. Here Z_N is the partition function of the bosonic matter+ghost CFT on the gluing surface, which is the unit disc w…
The OPE between the composite $b$ ghost and the unintegrated vertex operator for massless states of the pure spinor superstring is computed and shown to reproduce the structure of the bosonic string result. The vanishing of the double pole singularity is Lorentz gauge and the single pole is shown to be equal to the corresponding integrated vertex operator.
In this work we describe the mathematical foundations used in the construction of primary fields of minimal models of conformal field theory. The work contains two parts: In the first part we give a description of Verma and Fock modules for the Virasoro algebra and develop their imbedding patterns. This part is a simplification of the work of Feigin and Fuks (we correct a mistake in their patterns in the case III_+), Rocha-Charidi and some new ideas which yield a simplification of the original papers. In the second part we define (free) vertex operators as unbounded Hilbert space operators, ac…
We calculate higher spin BPST vertex operators for open bosonic string and express these operstors in terms of Kummer function of the second kind. We derive infinite number of recurrence relations among BPST vertex operators of different string states. These recurrence relations among BPST vertex operators lead to the recurrence relations among Regge string scattering amplitudes discovered recently.
