Due to the intrinsically initial singularity of solution and the discrete convolution form in numerical Caputo derivatives, the traditional $H^1$-norm analysis (corresponding to the case for a classical diffusion equation) to the time approximations of a fractional subdiffusion problem always leads to suboptimal error estimates (a loss of time accuracy). To recover the theoretical accuracy in time, we propose an improved discrete Grönwall inequality and apply it to the well-known L1 formula and a fractional Crank-Nicolson scheme. With the help of a time-space error-splitting technique and the global consistency analysis, sharp $H^1$-norm error estimates of the two nonuniform approaches are established for a reaction-subdiffusion problems. Numerical experiments are included to confirm the sharpness of our analysis.
This article concerns second-order time discretization of subdiffusion equations with time-dependent diffusion coefficients. High-order differentiability and regularity estimates are established for subdiffusion equations with time-dependent coefficients. Using these regularity results and a perturbation argument of freezing the diffusion coefficient, we prove that the convolution quadrature generated by the second-order backward differentiation formula, with proper correction at the first time step, can achieve second-order convergence for both nonsmooth initial data and incompatible source t…
In 1986, Dixon and McKee developed a discrete fractional Grönwall inequality [Z. Angew. Math. Mech., 66 (1986), pp. 535--544], which can be seen as a generalization of the classical discrete Grönwall inequality. However, this generalized discrete Grönwall inequality has not been widely applied in the numerical analysis of the time-stepping methods for the time-fractional evolution equations. The main purpose of this paper is to show how to apply the generalized discrete Grönwall inequality to prove the convergence of a class of time-stepping numerical methods for time-fractional nonlinear subd…
The aim of this paper is to develop and analyze high-order time stepping schemes for solving semilinear subdiffusion equations. We apply the $k$-step BDF convolution quadrature to discretize the time-fractional derivative with order $α\in (0,1)$, and modify the starting steps in order to achieve optimal convergence rate. This method has already been well-studied for the linear fractional evolution equations in Jin, Li and Zhou \cite{JinLiZhou:correction}, while the numerical analysis for the nonlinear problem is still missing in the literature. By splitting the nonlinear potential term into an…
The aim of this paper is to study the time stepping scheme for approximately solving the subdiffusion equation with a weakly singular source term. In this case, many popular time stepping schemes, including the correction of high-order BDF methods, may lose their high-order accuracy. To fill in this gap, in this paper, we develop a novel time stepping scheme, where the source term is regularized by using a $k$-fold integral-derivative and the equation is discretized by using a modified BDF2 convolution quadrature. We prove that the proposed time stepping scheme is second-order, even if the sou…

An essential feature of the subdiffusion equations with the $α$-order time fractional derivative is the weak singularity at the initial time. The weak regularity of the solution is usually characterized by a regularity parameter $σ\in (0,1)\cup(1,2)$. Under this general regularity assumption, we here obtain the pointwise-in-time error estimate of the widely used L1 scheme for nonlinear subdiffusion equations. To the end, we present a refined discrete fractional-type Grönwall inequality and a rigorous analysis for the truncation errors. Numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effe…
In this work, we develop an efficient incomplete iterative scheme for the numerical solution of the subdiffusion model involving a Caputo derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$ in time. It is based on piecewise linear Galerkin finite element method in space and backward Euler convolution quadrature in time and solves one linear algebraic system inexactly by an iterative algorithm at each time step. We present theoretical results for both smooth and nonsmooth solutions, using novel weighted estimates of the time-stepping scheme. The analysis indicates that with the number of iterations at each time le…
This article devotes to developing robust but simple correction techniques and efficient algorithms for a class of second-order time stepping methods, namely the shifted fractional trapezoidal rule (SFTR), for subdiffusion problems to resolve the initial singularity and nonlocality. The stability analysis and sharp error estimates in terms of the smoothness of the initial data and source term are presented. As a byproduct in numerical tests, we find amazingly that the Crank-Nicolson scheme ($θ=\frac{1}{2}$) without initial corrections can restore the optimal convergence rate for the subdiffusi…

In this work the L2-1$_σ$ method on general nonuniform meshes is studied for the subdiffusion equation. When the time step ratio is no less than $0.475329$, a bilinear form associated with the L2-1$_σ$ fractional-derivative operator is proved to be positive semidefinite and a new global-in-time $H^1$-stability of L2-1$_σ$ schemes is then derived under simple assumptions on the initial condition and the source term. In addition, the sharp $L^2$-norm convergence is proved under the constraint that the time step ratio is no less than $0.475329$.
In this work, the global-in-time $H^1$-stability of a fast L2-1$_σ$ method on general nonuniform meshes is studied for subdiffusion equations, where the convolution kernel in the Caputo fractional derivative is approximated by sum of exponentials. Under some mild restrictions on time stepsize, a bilinear form associated with the fast L2-1$_σ$ formula is proved to be positive semidefinite for all time. As a consequence, the uniform global-in-time $H^1$-stability of the fast L2-1$_σ$ schemes can be derived for both linear and semilinear subdiffusion equations, in the sense that the $H^1$-norm is…
In this work, we present a second-order nonuniform time-stepping scheme for the time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation. We show that the proposed scheme preserves the discrete maximum principle, and by using the convolution structure of consistency error, we present sharp maximum-norm error estimates which reflect the temporal regularity. As our analysis is built on nonuniform time steps, we may resolve the intrinsic initial singularity by using the graded meshes. Moreover, we propose an adaptive time-stepping strategy for large time simulations. Numerical experiments are presented to show the ef…
Two fast L1 time-stepping methods, including the backward Euler and stabilized semi-implicit schemes, are suggested for the time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation with Caputo's derivative. The time mesh is refined near the initial time to resolve the intrinsically initial singularity of solution, and unequal time-steps are always incorporated into our approaches so that an adaptive time-stepping strategy can be used in long-time simulations. It is shown that the proposed schemes using the fast L1 formula preserve the discrete maximum principle. Sharp error estimates reflecting the time regularity…
A time-stepping L1 scheme for subdiffusion equation with a Riemann--Liouville time-fractional derivative is developed and analyzed. This is the first paper to show that the L1 scheme for the model problem under consideration is second-order accurate (sharp error estimate) over nonuniform time-steps. The established convergence analysis is novel, innovative and concise. For completeness, the L1 scheme is combined with the standard Galerkin finite elements for the spatial discretization, which will then define a fully-discrete numerical scheme. The error analysis for this scheme is also investig…
Two phase flows that include phase transition, especially phase creation, with a sharp interface remain a challenging task for numerics. We consider the isothermal Euler equations with phase transition between a liquid and a vapor phase. The phase interface is modeled as a sharp interface and the mass transfer across the phase boundary is modeled by a kinetic relation. Existence and uniqueness results were proven in Ref. \cite{Hantke2019a}. Using sharp interfaces for simulating nucleation and cavitation results in the grid containing tiny cells that are several orders of magnitude smaller than…
Fractional Klein-Kramers equation can well describe subdiffusion in phase space. In this paper, we develop the fully discrete scheme for fractional Klein-Kramers equation based on the backward Euler convolution quadrature and local discontinuous Galerkin methods. Thanks to the obtained sharp regularity estimates in temporal and spatial directions after overcoming the hypocoercivity of the operator, the complete error analyses of the fully discrete scheme are built. % , the main challenge of which comes from the hypocoercivity of the operator. It's worth mentioning that the convergence of the p…
A nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard model with a nonsmooth potential of double-well obstacle type that promotes sharp interfaces in the solution is presented. To capture long-range interactions between particles, a nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau energy functional is defined which recovers the classical (local) model for vanishing nonlocal interactions. In contrast to the local Cahn-Hilliard problem that always leads to diffuse interfaces, the proposed nonlocal model can lead to a strict separation into pure phases of the substance. Here, the lack of smoothness of the potential is essential to guarantee the afo…
Cohesive fracture is among the few techniques able to model complex fracture nucleation and propagation with a sharp (nonsmeared) representation of the crack. Implicit time-stepping schemes are often favored in mechanics due to their ability to take larger time steps in quasistatic and moderate dynamic problems. Furthermore, initially rigid cohesive models are typically preferred when the location of the crack is not known in advance, since initially elastic models artificially lower the material stiffness. It is challenging to include an initially rigid cohesive model in an implicit scheme be…
