Linear skew-product semidynamical systems generated by random systems of delay differential equations are considered, both on a space of continuous functions as~well as on a space of $p$-summable functions. The main result states that in both cases, the Lyapunov exponents are identical, and that the Oseledets decompositions are related by natural embeddings.
We prove that, for semi-invertible continuous cocycles, continuity of Lyapunov exponents is equivalent to continuity, in measure, of Oseledets subspaces.
We establish (i) stability of Lyapunov exponents and (ii) convergence in probability of Oseledets spaces for semi-invertible matrix cocycles, subjected to small random perturbations. The first part extends results of Ledrappier and Young to the semi-invertible setting. The second part relies on the study of evolution of subspaces in the Grassmannian.
We consider locally minimizing measures for the conservative twist maps of the $d$-dimensional annulus or for the Tonelli Hamiltonian flows defined on a cotangent bundle $T^*M$. For weakly hyperbolic such measures (i.e. measures with no zero Lyapunov exponents), we prove that the mean distance/angle between the stable and the unstable Oseledet's bundles gives an upper bound of the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents and a lower bound of the smallest positive Lyapunov exponent. Some more precise results are proved too.
Covariant vectors, Lyapunov vectors, or Oseledets vectors are increasingly being used for a variety of model analyses in areas such as partial differential equations, nonautonomous differentiable dynamical systems, and random dynamical systems. These vectors identify spatially varying directions of specific asymptotic growth rates and obey equivariance principles. In recent years new computational methods for approximating Oseledets vectors have been developed, motivated by increasing model complexity and greater demands for accuracy. In this numerical study we introduce two new approaches bas…
Oseledets regularity functions quantify the deviation of the growth associated with a dynamical system along its Lyapunov bundles from the corresponding uniform exponential growth. Precise degree of regularity of these functions is unknown. We show that for every invariant Lyapunov bundle of a volume preserving Anosov flow on a closed smooth Riemannian manifold, the corresponding Oseledets regularity functions are in $L^p(m)$, for some $p > 0$, where $m$ is the probability measure defined by the volume form. We prove an analogous result for essentially bounded cocycles over volume preserving A…
Oseledets' celebrated Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET) is concerned with the exponential growth rates of vectors under the action of a linear cocycle on R^d. When the linear actions are invertible, the MET guarantees an almost-everywhere pointwise splitting of R^d into subspaces of distinct exponential growth rates (called Lyapunov exponents). When the linear actions are non-invertible, Oseledets' MET only yields the existence of a filtration of subspaces, the elements of which contain all vectors that grow no faster than exponential rates given by the Lyapunov exponents. The authors recen…
We consider the problem of stability and approximability of Oseledets splittings and Lyapunov exponents for Perron-Frobenius operator cocycles associated to random dynamical systems. By developing a random version of the perturbation theory of Gouëzel, Keller, and Liverani, we obtain a general framework for solving such stability problems, which is particularly well adapted to applications to random dynamical systems. We apply our theory to random dynamical systems consisting of $\mathcal{C}^k$ expanding maps on $S^1$ ($k \ge 2$) and provide conditions for the stability of Lyapunov exponents a…
We study cocycles of compact operators acting on a separable Hilbert space, and investigate the stability of the Lyapunov exponents and Oseledets spaces when the operators are subjected to additive Gaussian noise. We show that as the noise is shrunk to 0, the Lyapunov exponents of the perturbed cocycle converge to those of the unperturbed cocycle; and the Oseledets spaces converge in probability to those of the unperturbed cocycle. This is, to our knowledge, the first result of this type with cocycles taking values in operators on infinite-dimensional spaces. The infinite dimensionality gives …
For Hölder continuous cocycles over an invertible, Lipschitz base, we establish the Hölder continuity of Oseledets subspaces on compact sets of arbitrarily large measure. This extends a result of Araújo, Bufetov, and Filip by considering possibly noninvertible cocycles, which in addition may take values in the space of compact operators on a Hilbert space. As a by-product of our work, we also show that a noninvertible cocycle with nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents exhibits nonuniformly hyperbolic behaviour (in the sense of Pesin) on a set of full measure.
We consider an abstract space of measurable linear cocycles and we assume the availability in this space of some appropriate uniform large deviation type estimates. Under these hypotheses we establish the continuity of the Oseledets filtration and decomposition as functions of the cocycle. The same assumptions lead in [6] to a general continuity theorem for the Lyapunov exponents. This result and other technical estimates derived in [6], along with the inductive scheme based on the Avalanche Principle, are the main ingredients of the arguments in this paper. We also give a new proof of the cla…
The Lyapunov exponents of locally constant GL(2;C)-cocycles over Bernoulli shifts depend continuously on the cocycle and on the invariant probability. The Oseledets decomposition also depends continuously on the cocycle, in measure.
We show that the integrated Lyapunov exponents of $C^1$ volume preserving diffeomorphisms are simultaneously continuous at a given diffeomorphism only if the corresponding Oseledets splitting is trivial (all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero) or else dominated (uniform hyperbolicity in the projective bundle) almost everywhere. We deduce a sharp dichotomy for generic volume preserving diffeomorphisms on any compact manifold: almost every orbit either is projectively hyperbolic or has all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero. Similarly, for a residual subset of all $C^1$ symplectic diffeomorphisms on…
We derive large deviations type (LDT) estimates for linear cocycles over an ergodic multifrequency torus translation. These models are called quasi-periodic cocycles. We make the following assumptions on the model: the translation vector satisfies a generic Diophantine condition, and the fiber action is given by a matrix valued analytic function of several variables which is not identically singular. The LDT estimates obtained here depend on some uniform measurements on the cocycle. Our general results derived in [9] regarding the continuity properties of the Lyapunov exponents (LE) and of the…
This works investigates the Lyapunov-Oseledets spectrum of transfer operator cocycles associated to one-dimensional random paired tent maps depending on a parameter $ε$, quantifying the strength of the \emph{leakage} between two nearly invariant regions. We show that the system exhibits metastability, and identify the second Lyapunov exponent $λ_2^ε$ within an error of order $ε^2|\log ε|$. This approximation agrees with the naive prediction provided by a time-dependent two-state Markov chain. Furthermore, it is shown that $λ_1^ε=0$ and $λ_2^ε$ are simple, and are the only exceptional Lyapunov …
We prove that if $f$ is a $C^1$-generic symplectic diffeomorphism then the Oseledets splitting along almost every orbit is either trivial or partially hyperbolic. In addition, if $f$ is not Anosov then all the exponents in the center bundle vanish. This establishes in full a result announced by R. Mañé in the ICM 1983. The main technical novelty is a probabilistic method for the construction of perturbations, using random walks.
We show that on a dense open set of analytic one-frequency complex valued cocycles in arbitrary dimension Oseledets filtration is either dominated or trivial. The underlying mechanism is different from that of the Bochi-Viana Theorem for continuous cocycles, which links non-domination with discontinuity of the Lyapunov exponent. Indeed, in our setting the Lyapunov exponents are shown to depend continuously on the cocycle, even if the initial irrational frequency is allowed to vary. On the other hand, this last property provides a good control of the periodic approximations of a cocycle, allowi…
In this paper we prove the continuity of all Lyapunov exponents, as well as the continuity of the Oseledets decomposition, for a class of irreducible cocycles over strongly mixing Markov shifts. Moreover, gaps in the Lyapunov spectrum lead to a Hölder modulus of continuity for these quantities. This result is an application of the abstract continuity theorems obtained in [4], and generalizes a theorem of E. Le Page on the Hölder continuity of the maximal LE for one-parameter families of strongly irreducible and contracting cocycles over a Bernoulli shift. This is a draft of a chapter in our fo…
Covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLVs) are intrinsic modes that describe long-term linear perturbations of solutions of dynamical systems. With recent advances in the context of semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorems, existence of CLVs has been proved for various infinite-dimensional scenarios. Possible applications include the derivation of coherent structures via transfer operators or the stability analysis of linear perturbations in models of increasingly higher resolutions. We generalize the concept of Ginelli's algorithm to compute CLVs in Hilbert spaces. Our main result is a converge…
For a non-conformal repeller $Λ$ of a $C^{1+α}$ map $f$ preserving an ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy, this paper shows that the Lyapunov dimension of $μ$ can be approximated gradually by the Carathéodory singular dimension of a sequence of horseshoes. For a $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism $f$ preserving a hyperbolic ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy, if $(f, μ)$ has only two Lyapunov exponents $λ_u(μ)>0>λ_s(μ)$, then the Hausdorff or lower box or upper box dimension of $μ$ can be approximated by the corresponding dimension of the horseshoes $\{Λ_n\}$. The same statement holds true if $…
The fundamental matrix and the delay Lyapunov matrix of linear delay difference equations are introduced. Some properties of the Lyapunov matrix, and the jump discontinuities of its derivative are proven, leading to its construction in the case of single delay or commensurate delays. An approximation is proposed for the non-commensurate case.
Finding special orbits (as periodic orbits) of dynamical systems by variational methods and especially by minimization methods is an old method (just think to the geodesic flow). More recently, new results concerning the existence of minimizing sets and minimizing measures were proved in the setting of conservative twisting dynamics. These twisting dynamics include geodesic flows as well as the dynamics close to a completely elliptic periodic point of a symplectic diffeomorphism where the torsion is positive definite . Two aspects of this theory are called the Aubry-Mather theory and the weak …
This is the third part in a series of papers concerned with principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet subspaces of positive random dynamical systems in ordered Banach spaces. The current part focuses on applications of general theory, developed in the authors' paper "Principal Lyapunov exponents and principal Floquet spaces of positive random dynamical systems. I. General theory," Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 365 (2013), pp. 5329-5365, to positive continuous-time random dynamical systems on infinite dimensional ordered Banach spaces arising from random parabolic equations and random delay …
In this paper we consider input-to-state stability (ISS) of impulsive control systems with and without time-delays. We prove that if the time-delay system possesses an exponential Lyapunov-Razumikhin function or an exponential Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, then the system is uniformly ISS provided that the average dwell-time condition is satisfied. Then, we consider large-scale networks of impulsive systems with and without time-delays and we prove that the whole network is uniformly ISS under a small-gain and a dwell-time condition. Moreover, these theorems provide us with tools to construc…
We present Lyapunov stability and asymptotic stability theorems for steady state solutions of general state-dependent delay differential equations (DDEs) using Lyapunov-Razumikhin methods. Our results apply to DDEs with multiple discrete state-dependent delays, which may be nonautonomous for the Lyapunov stability result, but autonomous (or periodically forced) for the asymptotic stability result. Our main technique is to replace the DDE by a nonautonomous ordinary differential equation (ODE) where the delayed terms become source terms in the ODE. The asymptotic stability result and its proof …
We present generalised Lyapunov-Razumikhin techniques for establishing global asymptotic stability of steady-state solutions of scalar delay differential equations. When global asymptotic stability cannot be established, the technique can be used to derive bounds on the persistent dynamics. The method is applicable to constant and variable delay problems, and we illustrate the method by applying it to the state-dependent delay differential equation known as the sawtooth equation, to find parameter regions for which the steady-state solution is globally asymptotically stable. We also establish …
Given a discrete-time random dynamical system represented by a cocycle of non-singular measurable maps, we may obtain information on dynamical quantities by studying the cocycle of Perron-Frobenius operators associated to the maps. Of particular interest is the second-largest Lyapunov exponent, $λ_2$, which can tell us about mixing rates and decay of correlations in the system. We prove a generalized Perron-Frobenius theorem for cocycles of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces that preserve and occasionally contract a cone; this theorem shows that the top Oseledets space for the cocycle i…
An overview of stability conditions in terms of the Lyapunov matrix for time-delay systems is presented. The main results and proof are presented in details for the case of systems with multiple delays. The state of the art, ongoing research and potential extensions to other classes of delay systems are discussed.
In this contribution, the estimates for the response of time delay systems with nonlinear homogeneous right-hand side of degree strictly greater than one are constructed. The existing results obtained via the Lyapunov--Razumikhin approach are reminded. Their proofs, revisited in the appendix, lead to explicit expressions of the involved constants. Based on a recently introduced Lyapunov--Krasovskii functional and known estimates of the domain of attraction, we present new estimates of the system response. We compare both approaches and discuss the illustrative examples.
The celebrated Oseledets theorem \cite{O}, building over seminal works of Furstenberg and Kesten on random products of matrices and random variables taking values on non-compact semisimple Lie groups \cite{FK,Furstenberg}, ensures that the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-cocycles $(d\geqslant 2)$ over the shift are well defined for all points in a total probability set, ie, a full measure subset for all invariant probabilities. Given a locally constant $\mathrm{SL}(d,\mathbb R)$-valued cocycle we are interested both in the set of points on the shift space for which some Lyapun…
In this contribution, we study an homogeneous class of nonlinear time delay systems with time-varying perturbations. Using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii approach, we introduce a functional that leads to perturbation conditions matching those obtained previously in the Razumikhin framework. The functionals are applied to the estimation of the domain of attraction and of the system solutions. An illustrative example is given.
This paper continues the work contained in two previous papers, devoted to the study of the dynamical system generated by a delay differential equation that models leukemia. Here our aim is to identify degenerate Hopf bifurcation points. By using an approximation of the center manifold, we compute the first Lyapunov coefficient for Hopf bifurcation points. We find by direct computation, in some zones of the parameter space (of biological significance), points where the first Lyapunov coefficient equals zero. For these we compute the second Lyapunov coefficient, that determines the type of the …
We consider the problem of constructing Lyapunov functions for linear differential equations with delays. For such systems it is known that exponential stability implies the existence of a positive Lyapunov function which is quadratic on the space of continuous functions. We give an explicit parametrization of a sequence of finite-dimensional subsets of the cone of positive Lyapunov functions using positive semidefinite matrices. This allows stability analysis of linear time-delay systems to be formulated as a semidefinite program.
In this paper, we present estimates for solutions and for the attraction domain of the trivial solution for systems with delayed and nonlinear weighted homogeneous right-hand side of positive degree. The results are achieved via a generalization of the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional construction presented recently for homogeneous systems with standard dilation. Along with the classical approach for the calculation of the estimates within the Lyapunov-Krasovskii framework, we develop a novel approach which combines the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals with ideas of the Razumikhin framewor…
We present a dual form of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional which allows the problem of controller synthesis of multi-delay systems to be formulated and solved in a convex manner. First, we give a general form of dual stability condition formulated in terms of Lyapunov operators which are positive, self-adjoint and preserve the structure of the state-space. Second, we provide a class of such operators and express the stability conditions as positivity and negativity of quadratic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional forms. Next, we adapt the SOS methodology to express positivity and negativity of these …
The paper is devoted to the study of stability of equilibrium solutions of a delay differential equation that models leukemia. The equation was previously studied in [5] and [6], where the emphasis is put on the numerical study of periodic solutions. Some stability results for the equilibria are also presented in these works, but they are incomplete and contain some errors. Our work aims to complete and to bring corrections to those results. Both Lyapunov first order approximation method and second Lyapunov method are used.
We show the existence of nonautonomous invariant manifolds for planar, asymptotically autonomous differential equations, that have equilibrium solutions with zero Lyapunov spectrum. These invariant manifolds correspond to the stable and unstable manifold of a desingularized equation, that we obtain by using the blow-up method. More precisely, the blow-up method is extended to the nonautonomous setting and transforms the original finite-dimensional ordinary differential equation into an infinite-dimensional delay equation with infinite delay, but hyperbolic structure. In the technical construct…

This contribution presents two exponential stability criteria for linear systems with multiple pointwise and distributed delays. These results (necessary and sufficient conditions) are given in terms of the delay Lyapunov matrix and the fundamental matrix of the system. An important property is that the stability test requires a finite number of mathematical operations.
We show the continuous dependence of solutions of linear nonautonomous second order parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with bounded delay on coefficients and delay. The assumptions are very weak: only convergence in the weak-* topology of delay coefficients is required. The results are important in the applications of the theory of Lyapunov exponents to the investigation of PDEs with delay.
In this paper, the stability analysis of quaternion-valued neural networks (QVNNs) with both leakage delay and additive time-varying delays is proposed. By employing the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method and fully considering the relationship between time-varying delays and upper bounds of delays, some sufficient criteria are derived based on reciprocally convex method and several inequality techniques. The stability criteria are established in two forms: quaternion-valued linear matrix inequalities (QVLMIs) and complex-valued linear matrix inequalities (CVLMIs), in which CVLMIs can be dir…
In the present paper we investigate the influence of the retarded access by a time-varying delay on the dynamics of delay systems. We show that there are two universality classes of delays, which lead to fundamental differences in dynamical quantities such as the Lyapunov spectrum. Therefore we introduce an operator theoretic framework, where the solution operator of the delay system is decomposed into the Koopman operator describing the delay access and an operator similar to the solution operator known from systems with constant delay. The Koopman operator corresponds to an iterated map, cal…
The properties of stability of compact set $\mathcal{K}$ which is positively invariant for a semiflow $(Ω\times W^{1,\infty}([-r,0],\mathbb{R}^n),Π,\mathbb{R}^+)$ determined by a family of nonautonomous FDEs with state-dependent delay taking values in $[0,r]$ are analyzed. The solutions of the variational equation through the orbits of $\mathcal{K}$ induce linear skew-product semiflows on the bundles $\mathcal{K}\times W^{1,\infty}([-r,0],\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $\mathcal{K}\times C([-r,0],\mathbb{R}^n)$. The coincidence of the upper-Lyapunov exponents for both semiflows is checked, and it is a fun…
