Oseledets regularity functions quantify the deviation of the growth associated with a dynamical system along its Lyapunov bundles from the corresponding uniform exponential growth. Precise degree of regularity of these functions is unknown. We show that for every invariant Lyapunov bundle of a volume preserving Anosov flow on a closed smooth Riemannian manifold, the corresponding Oseledets regularity functions are in $L^p(m)$, for some $p > 0$, where $m$ is the probability measure defined by the volume form. We prove an analogous result for essentially bounded cocycles over volume preserving Anosov flows.
In these expository notes, we give a proof of regularity of Anosov splitting for Anosov diffeomorphisms in a torus. We also generalize the idea to higher dimensions and to Anosov flows.
Given any smooth Anosov map we construct a Banach space on which the associated transfer operator is quasi-compact. The peculiarity of such a space is that in the case of expanding maps it reduces exactly to the usual space of functions of bounded variation which has proven particularly successful in studying the statistical properties of piecewise expanding maps. Our approach is based on a new method of studying the absolute continuity of foliations which provides new information that could prove useful in treating hyperbolic systems with singularities.
We show that the integrated Lyapunov exponents of $C^1$ volume preserving diffeomorphisms are simultaneously continuous at a given diffeomorphism only if the corresponding Oseledets splitting is trivial (all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero) or else dominated (uniform hyperbolicity in the projective bundle) almost everywhere. We deduce a sharp dichotomy for generic volume preserving diffeomorphisms on any compact manifold: almost every orbit either is projectively hyperbolic or has all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero. Similarly, for a residual subset of all $C^1$ symplectic diffeomorphisms on…
We prove that if $f$ is a $C^1$-generic symplectic diffeomorphism then the Oseledets splitting along almost every orbit is either trivial or partially hyperbolic. In addition, if $f$ is not Anosov then all the exponents in the center bundle vanish. This establishes in full a result announced by R. Mañé in the ICM 1983. The main technical novelty is a probabilistic method for the construction of perturbations, using random walks.
Let $M$ be a closed oriented surface endowed with a Riemannian metric $g$. We consider the flow $ϕ$ determined by the motion of a particle under the influence of a magnetic field $Ω$ and a thermostat with external field ${\bf e}$. We show that if $ϕ$ is Anosov, then it has weak stable and unstable foliations of class $C^{1,1}$ if and only if the external field ${\bf e}$ has a global potential $U$, $g_{1}:=e^{-2U}g$ has constant curvature and $e^{-U}Ω$ is a constant multiple of the area form of $g_1$. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for just one of the weak foliations to be of …
We briefly survey some of the recent results concerning the metric behavior of the invariant foliations for a partially hyperbolic on a three-dimensional manifold and propose a conjecture to characterize atomic behavior for conservative partially hyperbolic homotopic to Anosov (DA) on $\mathbb T^3$. On the other hand we prove that if one of the invariant foliations (stable, center or unstable) of a conservative DA on $\mathbb T^3$ is $C^1$ and transversely absolutely continuous with bounded Jacobians the Lyapunov exponent on this direction is defined everywhere and constant. If the center foli…
We introduce the matching functions technique in the setting of Anosov flows. Then we observe that simple periodic cycle functionals (also known as temporal distance functions) provide a source of matching functions for conjugate Anosov flows. For conservative codimension one Anosov flows $φ^t\colon M\to M$, $\dim M\ge 4$, these simple periodic cycle functionals are $C^1$ regular and, hence, can be used to improve regularity of the conjugacy. Specifically, we prove that a continuous conjugacy must, in fact, be a $C^1$ diffeomorphism for an open and dense set of codimension one conservative Ano…
The original proof has a gap, and need extra hypothesis that the strong stable and strong unstable filiation both to be $C^1$. The argument is like the following: with the regularity, one can show that the weak-stable and weak-unstable foliation both to be $C^{1+Lip}$, and then following the same argument as in the paper one can conclude the proof. But this extra hypothesis seems implying that the flow has a contact structure. Then it will be only a result which improves the Foulon's proof on contract structure for $C^\infty$ regularity to $C^2$, not so interest.
We introduce a new family of thermostat flows on the unit tangent bundle of an oriented Riemannian $2$-manifold. Suitably reparametrised, these flows include the geodesic flow of metrics of negative Gauss curvature and the geodesic flow induced by the Hilbert metric on the quotient surface of divisible convex sets. We show that the family of flows can be parametrised in terms of certain weighted holomorphic differentials and investigate their properties. In particular, we prove that they admit a dominated splitting and we identify special cases in which the flows are Anosov. In the latter case…
Adapting tools that we introduced in [19] to study Anosov flows, we prove that the trace formula conjectured by Dyatlov and Zworski in [12] holds for Anosov flows in a certain class of regularity (smaller than $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ but larger than the class of Gevrey functions). The main ingredient of the proof is the construction of a family of anisotropic Hilbert spaces of generalized distributions on which the generator of the flow has discrete spectrum.
For the time-one map $f$ of a contact Anosov flow on a compact Riemann manifold $M$, satisfying a certain regularity condition, we show that given a Gibbs measure on $M$, a sufficiently large Pesin regular set $P_0$ and an arbitrary $δ\in (0,1)$, there exist positive constants $C$ and $c$ such that for any integer $n \geq 1$, the measure of the set of those $x\in M$ with $f^k(x) \notin P_0$ for at least $δn$ values of $k = 0,1, \ldots,n-1$ does not exceed $C e^{-cn}$.
For Anosov flows preserving a smooth measure on a closed manifold $\mathcal{M}$, we define a natural self-adjoint operator $Π$ which maps into the space of invariant distributions in $\cap_{u<0} H^{u}(\mathcal{M})$ and whose kernel is made of coboundaries in $\cup_{s>0} H^{s}(\mathcal{M})$. We describe relations to Livsic theorem and recover regularity properties of cohomological equations using this operator. For Anosov geodesic flows on the unit tangent bundle $\mathcal{M}=SM$ of a compact manifold, we apply this theory to study questions related to $X$-ray transform on symmetric tensors on …
We are motivated by a conjecture of A. and S. Katok to study the smooth cohomologies of a family of Weyl chamber flows. The conjecture is a natural generalization of the Livshitz Theorem to Anosov actions by higher-rank abelian groups; it involves a description of top-degree cohomology and a vanishing statement for lower degrees. Our main result, proved in Part II, verifies the conjecture in lower degrees for our systems, and steps in the "correct" direction in top degree. In Part I we study our "base case": geodesic flows of finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds. We describe obstructions (invari…
We develop a paradifferential approach for studying non-smooth hyperbolic dynamics and related non-linear PDE from a microlocal point of view. As an application, we describe the microlocal regularity, i.e the $H^s$ wave-front set for all $s$, of the unstable bundle $E_u$ for an Anosov flow. We also recover rigidity results of Hurder-Katok and Hasselblatt in the Sobolev class rather than Hölder: there is $s_0>0$ such that if $E_u$ has $H^s$ regularity for $s>s_0$ then it is smooth (with $s_0=2$ for volume preserving $3$-dimensional Anosov flows). In the appendix by Guedes Bonthonneau, it is als…
In this paper, we investigate the ergodic and rigidity properties of weakly hyperbolic group actions. Motivated by classical theorems describing Anosov diffeomorphisms, we obtain two main results: First, all C^2 volume preserving weakly hyperbolic actions on closed manifolds are ergodic. This result generalizes Anosov's classical theorem on ergodicity of Anosov diffeomorphisms to the wider class of weakly hyperbolic group actions. To state the second main result, suppose that A denotes a weakly hyperbolic action of a higher rank lattice (such as SL(n,Z) for n>2) by C^2 volume preserving diffeo…
We consider flows, called $W^{\rm u}$ flows, whose orbits are the unstable manifolds of a codimension one Anosov flow. Under some regularity assumptions, we give a short proof of the strong mixing property of $W^{\rm u}$ flows and we show that $W^{\rm u}$ flows have purely absolutely continuous spectrum in the orthocomplement of the constant functions. As an application, we obtain that time changes of the classical horocycle flows for compact surfaces of constant negative curvature have purely absolutely continuous spectrum in the orthocomplement of the constant functions for time changes in a…
We study the regularity of a conjugacy between an Anosov automorphism $L$ of a nilmanifold $N/Γ$ and a volume-preserving, $C^1$-small perturbation $f$. We say that $L$ is locally Lyapunov spectrum rigid if this conjugacy is $C^{1+}$ whenever $f$ is $C^{1+}$ and has the same volume Lyapunov spectrum as $L$. For $L$ with simple spectrum, we show that local Lyapunov spectrum rigidity is equivalent to $L$ satisfying both an irreducibility condition and an ordering condition on its Lyapunov exponents.
We consider families of diffeomorphisms with dominated splittings and preserving a Borel probability measure, and we study the regularity of the Lyapunov exponents associated to the invariant bundles with respect to the parameter. We obtain that the regularity is at least the sum of the regularities of the two invariant bundles (for regularities in $[0,1]$), and under suitable conditions we obtain formulas for the derivatives. Similar results are obtained for families of flows, and for the case when the invariant measure depends on the map. We also obtain several applications. Near the time on…
We study the regularity of the conjugacy between an Anosov automorphism $L$ of a torus and its small perturbation. We assume that $L$ has no more than two eigenvalues of the same modulus and that $L^4$ is irreducible over $\mathbb Q$. We consider a volume-preserving $C^1$-small perturbation $f$ of $L$. We show that if Lyapunov exponents of $f$ with respect to the volume are the same as Lyapunov exponents of $L$, then $f$ is $C^{1+\text{Hölder}}$ conjugate to $L$. Further, we establish a similar result for irreducible partially hyperbolic automorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle.
